I thought my secondary blog (with WordPress backend) wouldn’t auto-update, but I think I missed the setting on Hostinger. So sadly my site is now running the new 7.0 with AI features 🤮. I immediately added the disable AI features line to config.php. I’ll be switching to a WordPress alternative later this year when...
I have refused to read The Bell Jar if not in its original English. Back at home, a copy of it was already a bit costly; not insanely so, but enough that it was out of budget to ask for it as a birthday gift (I'd look too greedy), and it would require me to purposefully save up for a month or two to buy a Spain...
It’s hot, sunny, and I’m melting. The sofa is a good place to be right now at the hottest time of the day. I should really be outside somewhere, doing something, being somewhere, doing something active or laying in the shade somewhere, under a tree or something. I should be enjoying this unusual May weather. My...
By: Alexei Navalny | Rating: 5/5This is a very heavy book. Navalny was never going to save Russia from itself. A system built over hundreds of years, you can't take on by yourself in this manner. But at least he tried. The book is written in a very cheerful manner, which is doubly sad as you see him go down the hole...
Short email today because I have some amazing news! My podcast tip jar is finally fixed! My podcast tip jar is where people can listen to my audiobooks in the podcast app of their choice. For a while, there were some account issues I did not know about but all of that should be fixed now. Now, you can enjoy...
I have a new section on my website dedicated to video games: https://protesilaos.com/games. My website has many such blogs, covering Emacs, politics, life issues, poetry, mechanical keyboards, and more. This new section contains my thoughts on video games I have played. You can expect more of a philosophical take,...
Una publicación de mi apreciación por One Piece, mi anime favorito. Te explicaré por qué lo es mientras soy feliz hablando de esto.
This blog post covers journal pictures, the question of indexing and my personal journaling history and thoughts.
Andrew Gleeson designed Analog Mono, “fixing the crimes of VCR OSD Mono.” There used to be this classic pixel font that you’d see everywhere in the 1990s on hi-fi equipment: VCRs, TVs, camcorders, etc. One of its challenges was a low baseline which resulted in all the letters with descenders pulled up, for example:...
A simple trick I picked up from the Runna app: If you want to increase your cadence, drive your arms faster. You don’t even have to think about your legs, because they will speed up automatically. Getting out of sync with your faster-moving arms is nearly impossible. I tried this on a recent tempo run and it felt...
I’ve been reading a lot about this race to prepare for it, including this race report from Ray Maker, this course preview from two-time winner Eric Lagerstrom, and this race review by Kelly O'Mara, and suffice to say, I’m more than a little anxious about the swim. To ease my anxiety, I built a swim conditions...
Banding was an incredibly powerful and underrated creature keyword in Magic that ended up a bit dysergic together with evasion abilities on cards like Mesa Pegasus. If Mesa Pegasus and Benalish Hero attack in a band, the flying becomes pointless. (Flying + Banding still pretty good on blocks though.) Because if the...
How I organise my film diaryIn my previous post, I included a breakdown of where I had watched my first one hundred films this year. I realised that I didn't sufficiently explain how I had this data on hand. So, this post will be an explainer on how I use tags in Letterboxd to organise my film diary in a loosely...
New York is a city that tries hard not to forget its fallen soldiers, especially those who died in global wars with many casualties. All over Gotham are Great War doughboys in bronze, solemn World War II-era plaques with the names of neighborhood enlistees, and celebratory statues and arches to honor the dead of the...
The latest version of WordPress (WP), seven, which shipped a few days ago, comes with, according to the accompanying release notes/marketing copy, a number of AI features. I’m yet to see even one of these, despite installing version seven last week now. The only noticeable difference I can discern — to date — is a...
Are these weeknotes again? Yes they are! Is this a fluke or is it a trend? Who knows! Who cares! Let’s do iiiiiittttttt. Current situation: Not pictured: Raspberry hibiscus iced tea. There is always a beverage. Monday 18 May: Went for a walk early, before the rain set in. I adore a rainy day. Got a lot of work done....
If, like me, you have ever lived in the U.S.A., and if, like me, you are of a sufficiently distinguished BMI so as to rank highly the invention of comestibles, you will agree[1] that Ranch (enPR: rāyŭnch) dressing is one of the great American inventions—right up there with the cotton gin, surgical anesthesia, and...
They believed the stories, not just that "this is the future," but that future meant something better for everyone. “Access” signaled equality. But as the tech billionaires have embraced authoritarianism and inequality, and as their apocalyptic rhetoric about not just the "end of work," but quite literally the end...
I went swimming. I am reminded that I don’t like swimming, being in the water, the smell of chlorine, the damp floor, seeing strands of other people’s hair in the drain, and the feeling of a cold swimsuit afterwards. The whole experience, really. But I did it for the little one, who was terrified the entire time,...
Motivation I struggled enough with the matter that I figured maybe it was worth typing a bit about it. I have a lot of notes in \(\LaTeX\), so I figure that sooner or later I would need to add to the site dependencies (ugh) to support math symbols being rendered if I wanted to discuss any of my notes from...
And reclaim focus for your distractible brain After years perfecting a simple plain text productivity system for tracking my tasks and time, I should have been happy. Surely the search was over at last? But something still felt wrong; incomplete. The information was all there, but I still had trouble focusing on the...
What if electric computers and the internet existed before the nazi regime and the second world war? This book begins with a glimpse what surveillance and exessive data collection can be used for in a totalitarian regime, effectively even worsening the holocaust. The story is written around two characters, their...
Maternal Uncle's Funeral Permalink to section 'Maternal Uncle's Funeral' # On 21 May 2026, we received the news that my maternal uncle, who had cancer, passed away on May 20th evening. While I was not very close to my maternal uncle because I typically only saw him during Lunar New Year — the last time I saw him...
General happeningsAn unremarkable week. I really got into Pokemon for some reason, especially Fakemon design. Many YouTube videos following the "[number] artists design Pokemon [insert stipulation here]" format were watched. I also found a new favourite Pokemon, Spewpa. I'm thinking about getting some trading cards...
May 2026. Blyth. Nottinghamshire. Off on our latest trip south to see Dad and source blog material from Transylvania. Sis gave me a book of lunch stops off the motorways a while ago, most of them at garden centres and alpaca farms. I missed the turn for the alpacas. A man cannot live on Greggs macaroni cheese and...
Memorial Day Staycation We should have been camping this weekend. The weather had other ideas. All of Virginia is in a moderate to severe drought, but of course Memorial Day weekend was a washout. I cancelled camping plans last week, and instead we did a local staycation. On Friday, we had dinner at our favorite...
2026-05-24Hello! Day 100 is out to the public, and so any links there will stay the same. I hope they don't rot and make the listing fall apart. This is a photo of a Harley Davidson Street Glide. That's all I know, and since there's no Wikipedia article (or easily-available good source) about this, that's all I can...
Between 18 May and 24 May I shared a handful of links on social.omgmog.net. Here they are again, with a bit more room to breathe.
I’ve noticed that travel has become, of late, an act of collecting places. I’ve literally heard people referring to visiting a place as doing that place, as in “Have you done Japan?”, assuming that one can do an entire country, and once that country is done it remains as such. As if a place is a product to be...
As an old school programmer, I thought I'd write down my journey into agentic AI and reflect on it. Why I love programming I've been programming for as long as I remember. My parents bought an Amstrad CPC 128k (yes, that's the RAM size) and I was immediatly hooked, at the age of 8. After getting bored of the...
I was recently handed down a D-Link DNS-323 NAS which I thought would be great for my brother to use. Although the stock D-Link firmware functions okay, it's officially EOL and there hasn't been an official update for it since 2013, and therefore using outdated protocols. I did some research and found the project...
I wrote up a dump of all Venmo deeplinks back in 2017. I was recently looking through backlinks to the blog and saw this StackOverflow post trying to open a user's account based on their username. Figured I'd do a quick update and point to an answer. While I tried dumping from the Venmo app the app insta-crashes on...
On 14th May 2026, I logged onto my server to clear some disk space, only to find out that my mail server was under attack: an attacker got access to a mail account with weak credentials and sent spam from my domain. My mail server was configured to use Linux system accounts instead of the commonly recommend virtual...
In November of last year, I wrote about what I did and didn’t want to do in Emacs. It’s great for anything that involves text editing/processing, good for certain kinds of management tasks (it’s a great Git client, and even has surprisingly useful file management tricks up its sleeve); it’s not—at least to me—great...

Having someone read it is scary... Whenever I write something here, I try to not think too much about who will be reading it. I write primarily for myself, by trying to explain my thoughts and ideas I tend to get a clearer picture of myself. This mentality is why I don't use my real name here, and why I don't have...
Finally had a Gundam film showing at a theater close to where I live after like 30 years of watching this franchise Thursday night I saw Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway: The Sorcery of Nypmh Circe in theaters. It's a weird experience seeing a new release from a franchise that's meant a lot to you throughout your life in...
I guess we all have a favourite part of the day. A moment in time that you look forward to, perhaps for a specific reason. For me, I have one standout point in the day that I always enjoy. You may well scoff, but it's a moment where I will accept no interruptions. I feel bereft if I have missed it, and look forward...

"Wrestling is fake!" Well, no. It's not fake, it's choreographed, practiced, and performed by athletes who spend hours in the gym to safely do their part. That's like saying a play isn't real. Is it a MMA fight or boxing match? No, but is every "real" fight legit? How many stories have you heard of a fighter being...

Scratch, scratch, scratch… Dig, dig, dig… Breathe in…and blow the lid off… Sometimes, it is right under your nose. You can practically smell it. The top note is soft and sweet, maybe refreshing. It draws you in, lingers for a moment, and fades away revealing something more complex: its heart. By now your emotions...
Now, May 2026: a letter from Scotland! I’ve received a letter all the way from Scotland this week! Let me explain. Some time ago, I was browsing James’ Coffee Blog, as I do quite often. As I was reading Noticing, I noticed (sorry) an Easter egg on the website. I reached out to James to let him know I had discovered...
It used to be when you wanted to send an email to Newsonaut, you’d go through gmail.com. I recently switched to a newsonaut.com address, but it didn't take long for bots to scrape it and start spamming me. My solution was to convert all the characters in the address to HTML entities. These are bits of code that are...
One of my earliest and most vivid childhood memories is of swimming in a cool pool bounded by boulders in the middle of a river in the mountains of Bulgaria, the late-afternoon sun casting komorebi on the water through the rustling leaves. I can still hear the feeling-tone in my body, the strange and lovely...
A sunny Sunday, a few clouds in the sky, windows wide open, iced coffee, Italo disco on moderate volume, this is a good early summer morning. My “cleaning out my personal side-projects”-project is moving very slowly. Mostly because I’m faster at having new ideas than being able to let go of the old ones.Oh well....
Aggrade. There's a word we're all familiar with, I'm sure... No? Me neither. It means to build up or raise the level of a land surface by depositing sediment, and I mention it because it was the word that knocked my 11-year-old grandson out of the Canadian national spelling bee junior finals last night. Thanks to the...
The internet is on the horizon. It is happening. This internet is a technology that is going to change the world, alongside the World Wide Web. It is going to be huge. Knowledge beyond measure. The world will be not as we know. A superpowered information superhighway is being established. Soon we will all be surfing...
Didn't they used to say that we have two ears and one mouth so our listening ought to be in proportion, or something like that? I have 10 fingers to type with ... ¶ This is not merely another morning, but a unique one. One I will never see or experience again. I thank God for it. ¶ I had stated that no Bible version...
When you’re not as rich as you’d like and not as powerful as you’d think, you plaster gold trinkets all over your Oval Office. When you’re as rich as millions of people combined and as powerful as most democratically elected heads of state, you plaster your munificence all over public amenities. Rockefeller did it,...
Pagans and their idols of Goddesses appeared juvenile to those that discovered the One.
I've just released BlogMore v2.28.0. This release has some small improvements to the JSON-LD structured data that was added in the last release, and also adds support for actually showing author names on posts. On the latter point first: I only ever really created BlogMore for myself, thinking that perhaps some...
I have previously written about what resources I subscribe to (newsletter, RSS, manual checking) to keep on top of data protection law news, cases, new reports, recommendations by authorities, papers of notable personalities in the space, and more. Since then, it grew to even more sources. Many of these notify me of...

A time, a place, and humans. Let’s take a moment to consider the font, Instrument Serif. Created by the Portland-based design agency Instrument for their own use — along with Instrument Sans — they open-sourced it on GitHub, where it made its way to Google Fonts, in a generous act. And, guess where LLMs love to get...
