I think we all know that constant access to the internet and social media on our smart devices is rotting our brain cells. It's easy to pick up your hand-sized digital dragon as it burns the hours out of your day. Don't get me wrong, these little miracles are a useful tool and I would be lost without mine, but some...
Hello hello hello! If you're paying attention (and/or visiting the site), you might notice a common thread and a few changes. Our home page got a little face lift and we are slowly rolling out new designs for all of the different things we publish. Our Weekend Edition (the thing you are reading right now) has a new...
I will present three widely used logical fallacies that share the same principle: my statement is true because I am pointing to some other thing that was present or also true. This other thing doesn't have a correlation to the thing I want to prove. These fallacies improperly use something prior in time as proof of...

Yesterday I was reading a book and in it a character talked about the haves and have nots and all of a sudden I had the outline of this post in my head. The haves are stealing all the creative output of the have nots. The have nots are the largest group of creatives, the blog keepers, the writers, the artists with...
I’ve been experimenting with a human-friendly way to cluster list values using reversals of sub-lists. Or, in normal human words: I was playing with my toddler’s Magna-Tiles and got into a pattern with how I was sorting and grouping them, and turned it into a little… algorithm? Heuristic? Anyway, look! Here’s a...
Fortune ate Lee on his death bed. O so rich was he, the last meal held only hope for more.
Brought to you by the second part of this wonderful review of C.S. Harris’ Why Kill the Innocent, by Sonomalass (which you should absolutely go read right now, I’ll wait), wherein she says, “So my strongest reaction…was how well the novel shows the need for action on the issue of women’s rights in 19th century Great...

18th May - 24th May Hello to everyone but especially the teenage emo lesbian in this restaurant wearing Vans, stockings, and a "I ♥️ My Girlfriend" t-shirt who has clearly escaped from 2005. Nice work. The washing machine packed in necessitating an emergency replacement; other parents, I'm sure, can attest to the...
There is justified anger about governments relying on Palantir software. There are also calls to write replacement software, perhaps imbued with European values. And I’d love for that to happen pronto, but first we need to understand a few things. It is not just the software. Image by Mariia Shalabaieva on Unsplash...
The biggest event of the past week? Ava’s college graduation! Truth be told, she graduated last December, but the ceremony was last weekend and it was a great time. Quite a few family were able to make it to Des Moines to spend a fun weekend celebrating. I got a little sidetracked early this week when I discovered...
This is an archived version of my Now page. I haven’t updated this page in quite a while. A lot has changed since then, like the company I worked for, or the fact that I attempted a public challenge but without success. I finally recreated some dotfiles for macOS and started to have some doubts about using the new...
A week in Lijiang — ancient towns, medicinal hot pot, and architecture that looks more like Tibet than China.
Note: My instructions are probably unusual. I am offering them here in case they are of value to someone else. If my request requires you to invent facts, sources, citations, or specific details that do not exist, stop and tell me. Offer to help me reframe the question. If the task involves uncertainty, incomplete...
I attended the Computers, Privacy and Data Protection Conference (CPDP) in Brussels for the first time. The conference has lots of different rooms mostly in the same building where multiple panels, workshops and other things are happening at the same time in specific slots, so you gotta choose what you participate...
Kristeva begins the chapter "Semiotics of Biblical Abomination" by proposing two arguments for what impurity means in the Bible.
The coffee shop on the corner of Fleet Street was Julie and Morven's sanctuary from the relentless grind of criminal law. Mid-morning lattes were non-negotiable, even on the busiest days. "Did you see that?" Morven asked, setting down her cup. Julie looked up from her phone. "See what?" "Someone just snatched that...
2026-05-23Hello! I'm enjoying the weekend, and I've finally wrapped up the logistics for an exciting upcoming event. Took me long enough. In the meantime, I'm still looking back at the photographs I took from the arts market last week. The weather was much warmer, the parking lots were much fuller, and I had cash...
Here’s a 2002 story from a younger internet, by programmer Trey Harris (link to the original and if you don’t like the classic Usenet formatting – my browser’s reader mode can’t even prettify it! – here’s a nicer-looking format): “We’re having a problem sending email out of the department.” “What’s the problem?” I...
FRBs are “fast radio bursts,” and scientists use radio telescopes to discover them. FRBs usually come from space, at least the ones that scientists are interested in, but sometimes they come from the lunch room. Around 1998, the Parkes Observatory started noticing FRBs that they couldn’t quite explain. They seemed...

Go to the original article to see them rendered properly.] The next technique we’ll use to derive the formula for the center deflection of a simply supported beam with a uniform load is the slope-deflection equation:...
I've seen a few people talking about KeePass and Syncthing and hosting their own passwords, so I thought I'd use this as an opportunity to provide a simple overview of my own setup. I've been using some combination of KeePass and Syncthing since 2021. Syncthing # My Syncthing topology is a simple star topology. I...

My note taking process has evolved a lot over the years. Originally I used my iPad with the Apple pencil, but having to charge it every few days was a pain. Then I switched to the Remarkable 2, which was great and I didn't need to charge the pen. But as I produced more and more notes, it became awkward to search for...
While I know the subject really fires some people, ad blockers are something I've never really paid too much attention to. Back in the early days of the web, the really early days, I used to run with full-on JavaScript blocking1. The web changed and I accepted it. More recently, as I've become a full-time Safari...
May 2026. Sheffield. Joan and Dave reached the end of their world tour of Yorkshire in Sheffield, stopping overnight in Retired Martin Towers to admire the beauty of our “natural” garden. The cultural tour for Americans takes in the cathedral, Millennium Galleries, Town Hall, the former newspaper HQ that now houses...
“Everything impinges on everything else… Everything is potentially everywhere.” The hardest state for a human being to sustain is that of open-endedness. We may know that uncertainty is the crucible of creativity, we may know that uncertainty is the key to democracy and good science, and yet in our longing for...
Spoiler alert: nobody knows the meaning of life. You can’t say we don’t try, though. Oh, we try. Humanity has spent thousands of years inventing increasingly elaborate explanations for why we’re here. Religion, philosophy, self-help books, wellness influencers who look aggressively hydrated. Everybody’s got an...

With my Flask Share app, it was time to consider re-working this into something more production-like. Flask serves the purpose for my needs but Flask is not really a production tool. There is the massive red warning: WARNING: This is a development server. Do not use it in a production deployment. Use a production...
