(This is a meta post about this very blog. If that’s not interesting to you, skip to the next one!) Thank you for all your feedback and bug reports in response to my call two weeks ago. Since then, I: revamped the image and video pipelines, which should make the blog load a lot faster and CPU/GPU struggle a lot...
Here, for no particular reason, is a poem by Charles Stuart Calverley which perfectly demonstrates what Pope called the art of sinking in poetry – also the perils of ending a stanza with a two-syllable line. Changed I know not why my soul is rack'd: Why I ne'er smile as was my wont: I only know that, as a fact, I...
This is an excerpt from my journal in which I comment on how I handle my everyday affairs in my land while respecting the greater magnitudes. The hours are shorter when you have no idle moments. I have not had the chance to write much because I am preoccupied with time-sensitive tasks around my land on top of...
This is a pretty personal post btw, not dark or anything but it may not be up your alley to have my ramblings and questions get to you or something. A few weeks ago my mom had a talk with me, when she discovered my videogame collection. To be clear, it was not even hidden, you only have to enter my bedroom and look...
I spotted a remarkably simple demonstration of optical diffraction the other night, from looking across at the far away lights on the otherside of the train tracks from a balcony. I noticed they looked quite different dependng on whether the flyscreen was open, or closed. Take a look: Open Closed See those beautiful...
If there's one thing that I've internalized from years of work, it's that if you do something twice, write it down. I reference stuff I wrote 6 years ago daily. I'm now hitting a lot of the same questions and patterns for answering in my lldb investigations, so here's my living public wiki.
TL;DR: A pinned sidebar panel that shows a date-sorted table of all notes linking to currently viewing. Usually in obsidian I have a graph view of open but ive found this to be better in understanding connections, since i can view the created and modified dates. Just make sure you have dataview installed and then...
One thing I’ve learned about myself over the years is that I want to watch movies, but I want to have watched tv shows. Of course it isn’t black and white like that, there are exceptions on both sides, but broadly speaking, with movies I’m looking forward to watching them, with shows I’m looking forward to finishing...
I’m proud to be part of a Guinness World Records attempt, running in a non-stop four-week relay around Princes Park to help conquer cancer. It also happens that my little brother ran into the record books this weekend. Every dollar I raise will support Camp Quality’s programs for kids facing cancer and fund vital...
Designing for Curiosity, Spring 2026 School of Industrial Design, Georgia Tech Alice, Irene, Jessica, Shashank; Professor HyunJoo Oh Project Report: Wild LensesI audited Designing for Curiosity in my final semester at Georgia Tech. The first half was seminar-style, working through foundational papers in design. At...
Like Frances, Eryn and I have also been rewatching The West Wing. Periodically on the show there are these moments where politicians from both parties solemnly uphold democratic norms while treating each other with respect and wow, those scenes hit different twenty years later. Via Kottke: The Extrapolated Futures...
In which I challenge myself to draw a pokemon every day until I stop Ok we're back to it (the posting) - I haven't decided what I'm going to draw for today's (Tuesday) but since I have a kind of chaotic day due to work I figured I should get the last weeks worth of dexes up. Please enjoy some faithful...
This one's a reminder for me: if you aren't sure...
Quick one this week as we've released a bunch of stuff and I'm a little under the weather.First, our first anthology of 30 original stories is out now and available everywhere books are sold online on May 1st.A Great Big Fuss (2025)a foofaraw anthology—don’t go making a huge deal about it, that’s what we’re here...
I try my best to stick to the grocery list but this was a really good deal for strawberries. I did that thing mixing 1 part white vinegar and 3 parts water, soak for 10 minutes and dry thoroughly to extend their freshness. Now I'm looking up strawberry recipes. + a photo of poufsCurrently Listening: The Budos Band...
Of course, as per my previous article, all this OS stuff needs to run on hardware. And what kind of hardware?
A Polish-Jewish family comes to the U.S. at the beginning of the twentieth century. There, the family and their children try to make themselves a better future in the so-called promised land. I postponed this for a while, up to the point where I forgot why I even wanted to watch this. Opening the IMDb page, I...
The tighter the connection between business strategy and technical design, the easier for a software engineer to understand and implement. The more apparent this knowledge is, the easier for the AI to pick up and apply the principles and engineer to guide it correctly. Chapter 1. Analyzing Business Domains While...
There’s something unsettling about being the new kid on the block, even as an adult. It’s not super obvious, at least not like back then when you were a literal child. No one is pointing or whispering. There’s no cafeteria to navigate or classroom to choose a seat in. The feeling of being in those scenarios show up...
I miss email as a personal communication tool. Surely I still use it, but it is 20% paper trail for transactions, and 80% cold-messaging from companies I don't know—or plain old spam, if there's even a difference. A few years ago, when I left Facebook, I tried to leave WhatsApp, but at least in Mexico that's opting...

I collect cool, interesting links spread all over the web and share them here in daily posts. Hope you enjoy! More of them in the archive. #VazaBigTech (pt_BR). Ctrl+Z, a new Brazilian organization dedicated to taking on big tech, in partnership with GlobaLeaks, has just launched this platform to facilitate secure...

Looking out from a viewing point near Ivinghoe Beacon. Photos like this never do justice to how breathtaking the landscape is in person. One of my lifelong school friends recently lost his dad, so on Monday I took the day off to attend the funeral. It was a lovely service, with many heartfelt and moving eulogies...
Ever since I kicked off the work on BlogMore I've had a renewed interest in writing on this blog (as you can probably tell from the stats and the calendar). But not just writing: also tweaking it, tidying it up, thinking about maintaining it into the future, thinking about the links and the categories and so on. In...
Design tooling, LLMs, and why I still use a pencil. A friend and I were talking about AI and the question of where I lie on the spectrum came up: "I'm now on the handmade, artisanal, craftsperson end of the spectrum." A client project recently moved into the LLM layer. Some of the team had already been working with...

2026-04-28Hello!In comparison to yesterday's photo of a laboratory, this one is much more realistic. The outside of this building was... well, just a regular building from the looks of it. No fancy glass walls, no fancy bright colors. The first laboratory wants to make a statement and be admired, while this one just...
This is becoming a bit of a theme, lose something, order a replacement, and then the lost item reappears. Earlier in the year it was an AirPod, now it is a water bottle. Couldn’t for the life of me locate my favourite water bottle, it is the one I tend to grab about 90% of the time, the other 10% is a cycling bottle...
I use AI for some things. I’m putting that out there right from the start because it will get rid of those people who are so unreasonable that they can’t even be arsed to hear me out. I get most of the arguments against “Artificial Intelligence”. In fact, I agree with a lot of them. From the environmental and human...
Yay I managed to re-beat Tetris Plus, the puzzle mode on the GB version! I beat this game when I first got it as a teen on the original Game Boy Pocket but I can’t have been playing on Very Hard (whicth is what I beat it on now) because I’m not sure level 84 (out of a hundred) is humanly possible. The actual...
Some of my favourite Japanese place names, mostly from the greater Tokyo area. 001 - Maihama (舞浜)Maihama station is best known as the main access point for Tokyo Disney Land. I've only been to Disney Land once (and don't intend to go again), but I really like the name of the station. Its comprised of the kanji for...
The Papirus icon theme is my favourite - I've used it for years and it continues to work beautifully. So while I've been rebuilding my Framework 13, it was one of the first things I installed. But there's a problem, dear reader. You see, I'm a proud light mode person, but I regularly switch to dark mode when working...
Look, I have literally no idea by what stroke of luck I was approved for this ARC, but (and) also, there was no way on this reality or any other, I would not request it. Beware: emotional abuse and narcissistic behavior; discussion of violence and torture, with some minor violence on page; consensual explicit sex...
Inspired at IndieWebCampLast weekend was an absolute blast! I attended my first ever IndieWebCamp remotely, held at Düsseldorf. For those who are not familiar with it, it’s a two-day in person BarCamp (aka unconference) where anyone interested in independent, personal websites (i.e. IndieWeb) meet to share ideas, be...
Question for the audience: Do you tell people you blog? I was reflecting on this recently, after I inadvertently mentioned to a colleague that I had blogged about a topic a few days earlier. That, of course, started the questioning from them: Oh, what's it called? What do you write about? Can I see it? I reluctantly...
Lately I've been thinking and talking with a few friends about how people are strange when it comes to relationships. I personally know a few people who have a strange tendency to sugarcoat people for no good reason. By sugarcoating, I mean not speaking plainly about reasoning or even cutting short relationships...
Today I was working on a blog project collecting a bunch of post links to use in another project. When I need to visit a lot of posts on my blog, I do it through a localhost:8080 version of the site instead of the live one. I run an AppleScript that opens it in Terminal: set projectPath to...
I messaged my friend Suliman: “Don’t roast me too hard, but I bought the two cutest Usahanas.” after I had ordered a medium sized Sanrio plushie and a small one to attach to a bag. Aptly, he replied: “I mean, she‘s cute. But girl, you have so much HKIA merch at this point. When is your minimalism gonna kick in?”...
Quoted A love letter to cassette futurism by Mike Piggott (Twisted Wonderland) [C]assette futurism is a retro-futuristic aesthetic from around 1970-1985, and is a subgenre of sci-fi that essentially envisions a future through utilitarian, analogue technology. Think tech that was available in that time period: bulky...
Here's a fun technique I've been using a lot for the last couple years - calling upon a text editor and simple text files as a powerful and flexible "user interface" for command-line programs...
Even after Friendster stopped being a social network I still checked in on the website from time to time. It’s evidently been a while since I did that though. Last time I looked, Friendster — having gone through a number of changes in direction — was a gaming platform, but, as I’ve learned, ceased operations in...
I saw this questionary on Sebastian's blog and was bored so I answered it. What’s the best sandwich? I always enjoy a simple basic sandwich: cheese, jam, lettuce, tomato and add avocado always! What was the first concert you attended? A piano concert, I don't remember much about it. What is the scariest animal?...
There’s a beauty in how the Mac commits to “the desktop and files” metaphor. I think it’s admirable how ever since the earliest days of the Human Interface Guidelines, direct manipulation has been a core benefit of the operating systems: You Can Just Move Things Around. I want to explore how its been a phenomenal...
I’ve been interested in the concept of the indie web for a few years now, but have struggled to take part in a meaningful way. I wrote about an early attempt in 2024 when I discovered that you can get a random RSS feed from indieblog.page. To this day, I continue to get 10 random posts every day in my feed reader....
Yesterday the new Commodore, run by YouTuber Perifractic (Christian Simpson) announced their new product, a faithful recreation of the C64C, the second revision of the Commodore 64. Essentially it's the same as the first one they released, but it uses the case of the old C64C which has the same design language as...
“The self, the place where we live, is a place of illusion. Goodness is connected with the attempt to see the unself… to pierce the veil of selfish consciousness and join the world as it really is.” To recognize that there are infinitely many kinds of beautiful lives is to step outside the self, beyond its...
An actor in Stanislavski training receives this instruction: before entering a scene, reconstruct why a character who loves their family would betray them. Not philosophically, but as embodied preparation. She builds the answer from fragments she does not share: financial desperation, shame structures, a conception...
It’s a lovely Tuesday: ❯ https://{corp}.slack.com/archives/{channel}/{thread} ⏺ I can't fetch Slack URLs directly — the link points to a private Slack channel that requires authentication. Could you paste the message contents (or a screenshot) here? Once I can see what's in the thread, I can help with whatever it's...
April 2026. Loftus. North Yorkshire. I’d picked unsung Loftus for my campervan overnighter as it was free, a short bus ride to Staithes, and had a new GBG entry to tick. Sadly that was shut on Thursday, but next door Mad Alice’s was just opening, and I wasn’t going anywhere else. I outed myself as a Camra...
