Hello, RSS reader! 👋 This post has some bespoke art direction you’ll only see if you view it directly. No hard feelings if you prefer to read here, I just wanted you to know! ✌️ Superhero fans have debated for decades which character has the most compelling cast of antagonists. Batman? Spider-Man? But in terms of...
I can be a bit of a curmudgeon and focus on the negatives when I feel the pressure. I know it's not good for me to get into that negativity spiral so reflecting like this is important. So, without further ado, here are some things I have been enjoying lately. The feeling of a fistful of dry sand slowly running...
a half-assed review -- Need for Speed: Underground 2 (2003)"> By the time Need for Speed: Underground 2 hit the piracy scene, I was already in my first year of University, being busy with whatever students do: Warcraft III, movies and drinking. Sometimes all three at the same time. So it was easy to understand why I...
Started on Audiobook since I could not find the copy ANYWHERE yet for free (libraries). But turns out the Audiobook is great! So listening to this amazingly with a lot of attention! Maybe first-person thrillers are my flavor for Audiobooks!
De la ultimul articol am mai adăugat câteva lucruri la Pure Blog Discover. Unele sunt vizibile imediat, altele funcționează în fundal. I chop and change my website almost more than I actually write on it. For giggles, I thought I'd share what my current website setup and posting workflow is. This site uses Jekyll. I love it because I do almost all of my writing in Markdown, meanwhile the flat file nature of the site means its simple, fast, and I...
“Jettison Tattoo Removal, Negotiable Fee.”The sign, old-fashioned gold script on a dark wooden plaque, hung in a window between a Black barber shop and a corner store advertising money transfers. A smaller wooden “Open” sign hung from the bigger sign. It’s been two years since I got that tattoo, with Terry beside me...
This morning I'm experimenting with Bear again. I love the UI and the way everything is organized in the sidebar with tags. I'm considering it as a replacement for Drafts. My issue with Drafts is how cluttered the UI feels, particularly on the Mac. On top of that, I find the iOS 26 version less efficient than the...
What a month! GitHub went down six million times, eleven thousand Vercel security holes have been unveiled, Copilot doesn’t accept new signups due to a super unsustainable business model (finally someone admitted it), Anthropic landed on top of Hacker News billions of times due to some drama, popular npm packages...
Just finished reading "How to Read a Book" — it was pleasant and thoughtful. Currently reading/enjoying "On the Calculation of Volume, Book 2" and "The Magnificent Lives of Marjorie Post"Currently Listening: Nine Inch Noize “Copy of a”Reply via email
Colin Kidd: Harvey C. Mansfield, a professor of government at Harvard from 1962 until his retirement from teaching in 2023 at the age of 91, has never shirked any opportunity to burnish his reputation as a conservative ogre. His interventions in the campus culture wars have been plentiful, memorable and clumsy. One...
"Gentildonne" (Noblewomen) from the Gli abiti de veneziani (1754) by Giovanni Grevembroch, translated by René Seindal.
I'm not going to pretend that you are returning reader. You probably came from Bubbles, or perhaps you are one of the few people who has added this blog to their RSS reader. I wouldn't know actually, I very purposefully don't have analytics here, I would either get dissapointed that no one is reading, or stressed...

“The measure of love is to love without measure.”— St. Francis de Sales Our second child came into the world a few days ago, and I recall a conversation I had with a good friend of mine (also a dad) about how it would be possible to love the next kid as much as the first. But, we very quickly came to the conclusion...
Who knows that you blog?by David JamiesonDavid talks about his reluctance to share details about his blog with a colleague, and asks whether other people with blogs tell their friends and family.Read post ➡I saw this post in my RSS reader this morning, followed by a reply from Alex, so I thought I'd add my own...
“If it compiles, it works.” This feeling is one of the main things Rust engineers love most about Rust, and a reason why using it with coding agents is especially nice. After debugging some code that compiled but mysteriously stopped in production, I realized that it’s useful to enable more Clippy lints to catch...
About a year ago, the UK government’s Office for Students (OfS) (whose “free speech czar” is philosopher Arif Ahmed) levied a fine of £585,000 on the University of Sussex after investigating how the university handled the case of philosopher Kathleen Stock, who resigned after students protested her views and called...
I struggle with how humiliating it feels to talk about and point out misogyny; how the general regression into conservative values makes addressing misogyny come across as a last resort card you can pull out to make yourself look like a victim or get brownie points, while vilifying someone else. Like a thing you...
These are the basic settings for Emacs that I shared with Sacha Chua during our livestreamed meeting on 2026-04-30: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z7pcLdwuyxE. ;;; Sensible defaults that are not too intrusive and focus on common use-cases. Lindy Percival, Nathanael Scott, Daniel Carter, and others: This list of our 50 best films will likely provoke debate, but with the aid of 24 experts, including directors, actors, critics, curators and authors, what follows is an inspiring reminder of what we’ve seen so far and a heartfelt encouragement to go on...
The part that makes living off the land attacks so dangerous is not that they are magic. It is that they are ordinary. That is the uncomfortable truth. A lot of attacks do not start with some flashy custom malware that screams for attention. They start with a phished credential, an exposed remote access path, an...

It seems that dunking on GitHub is the flavour of the day. At the moment most of the social/news type things I tend to read are filled with the Ghostty news, as well as a small revival of posts and links to blog posts about all the recent outages. It's understandable. It does seem that something has shifted with...
First of all, correction for part 1 – the “focus mode” wasn’t removed. It was renamed to “quiet mode” and relocated to a different part of the UI, and I failed to spot it there. It’s still slightly perplexing, shiftily capitalized, and I doubt fully effective, but the effort is there: I also want to warn you there...
This morning I took delivery of a new Panama hat, the old one having become an offence to the eye, and summer being in the offing. The new hat, I was delighted to note, was made by the firm of Borges & Scott – a nice literary double-act. Sadly, Jorge Luis had no connection with the hat-making dynasty, which is based...
This post isn't going to be about the typical criticisms of generative AI, but a specific experience I've had (semi-)recently that made me realize another downside of it. -- A couple of months ago I was going to participate in a game jam that ultimately I had to bow out of after not having had the time to prepare...
Golden Week started off rather silvery-gray with overcast skies and some light drizzle. Did another hike with some friends today. The destination was Mt Hiwada in southern Saitama. It's more of a hill than a mountain, only 300-something meters. There were some swallows near the station; the nest was on the wall of...
David asked "Who knows that you blog?", and a lot of responses have been written. And well, this is my response.

Possible Improvements to Displaying Code Blocks and SnippetsI’m currently writing a post on how to use a Bash script with Termux. In the past, when I have code snippets / code blocks present in the post, I will make comments inside the code. This results in an utter mess of code + comments mixed together (I can’t...

The picture was taken by mr Nasser and shared on social media In appendix A of the book Root cause: Stories and lessons from two decades of Backend Engineering Bugs, author Hussein Nasser has these wonderful words to say about me: Daniel Stenberg is a Swedish engineer and the creator of curl (cURL), one of the most...
“A cat met up with a big male rat in the attic and chased him into a corner. The rat, trembling, said, ‘Please don’t eat me, Mr. Cat. I have to go back to my family. I have hungry children waiting for me. Please let me go.’ The cat said, ‘Don’t worry, I won’t eat you. To tell you the truth, I can’t say this too...
As I’m often on the lookout for inexpensive things to add to my Apple collection, I recently scooped up an instruction manual for my Macintosh SE. It also contained a much newer packet of information for some early-1990s model of PowerBook and what caught my eye was a trifold brochure for an Apple credit card,...
I'm writing this on my phone so I'll keep it brief. Was roaming around as usual, trying to hunt down something with my Cormorant Navy Issue. Nice, very punchy blaster ship. If it gets close to you and can keep your ship still, your ship will melt into puddle of plasma. First, I saw this guy. They didn't fight back,...
As part of my public homelab setup, one of the services I configured was a mail server! I got started with around a month ago, and have been running a bare minimum setup for a week. Here are some notes about the configuration process. Finding the right infrastructure Most providers and ISPs block port 25 traffic due...
As I wrote recently, I Love Bubbles. The new blog post aggregator (based on the RSS feeds of a curated list of blogs) has become part of my morning routine: making coffee, browsing my blogroll, opening Bubbles, and discovering new posts from blogs I’ve never heard of before — though that’s about to change ;) Since...
Posted on April 30, 2026 As always, this summer I had to net the figs. As soon as they began to ripen the birds noticed. How do you know a fig is perfectly ripe? A bird has eaten it. Figs are biblical. Certainly I enjoy eating figs under my vines, as Micah 4:4 extolls. Figs are laden with symbolism, with their sweet...
