I've seen three blog posts about this in my feeds today, and it's notable that so far everybody avoids openly sharing that they blog. I do share it when it's relevant, but thinking about this made me realize that I feel silly saying the word "blog" out loud. And it is a silly word after all, or at least I've always...

img { display: inline-block; } rose Went on vacation with friends :) Had a fun time in some museum exhibitions! I've been putting effort into getting ready for working from home a similar way to how I get ready when I go to the office, and it has helped me feeling more ready and energized for the day. I've noticed...
I’ve been working on transitioning this site over to a static generator and I’ve also been working on a new site design. What I decided to do is sort of a cross between the two: my current site will be converted into a static version of what stands today, design and all. It’ll be an archive of what was essentially...
2026-04-30Hello!The title comes from my high school English project, where we made a "short film" in the style of La Jetée — still pictures, mostly black and white, with one section of motion picture. We could have made our own original story, but I got lazy and copied the story from Ray Bradbury's There Will Come...
with me writing this in the last days of april i am really consistent when it comes to procrastination with carnival posts. anyhow for this month's bearblog carnival hosted by sage, i present you the wackiest animal of all time: the pumpkin toadlet. picture of a pumpkin toadlet on a leaf by Ariovaldo Giaretta /CC...
I collect cool, interesting links spread all over the web and share them here in daily posts. Hope you enjoy! More of them in the archive. Linux on PlayStation 5. The ps5-linux project enables the installation of a Linux distribution on the original PlayStation 5 (the physically larger model). The installation isn’t...
I read an April 18, 2026 report in the New York Post titled After holding its nose for decades, NJ finally bans stinky Bradford pear tree: Under a new law, the Bradford pear tree and 29 other non-native plants that have been leafing chaos on local ecosystems, posing public safety risks, crowding out native plants...

Dali in Yunnan may be the best place I've ever visited — better than the Mediterranean or Southeast Asia. Here's why almost no one in the Western world knows it exists.
AutoDescriptor: Added page description via AutoDescriptor bot One of the little fun things I like to do is ask ChatGPT for an infographic on something I want to know. Past image creators would struggle, so I wouldn't ask for an infographic. But Images 2.0 is really something! The infographics it produces are...
Here’s some stuff I’ve experienced lately (and not necessarily only new releases)...
It's time somebody invented beaming. And it doesn't have to be beaming a person at first, though that would be ideal... but maybe we could start with small objects. For example, I usually write these posts at my favourite café downtown. But I haven't been feeling too well the last couple of days, so I have to stay...
Consciousness. I know I have it, but have no idea what it is or where it comes from (nor does anyone else, whatever they may say). I am equally sure that I have a soul, but again have no idea what it is or where it comes from. Are consciousness and soul the same thing, or aspects of the same thing? Is soul perhaps a...
I think I have made it to Linux. It's now my desktop of choice 99.9% of the time. I've experimented in Linux for centuries! In the early days there was always something major holding me back from getting serious with our penguin friend. It was often a driver problem -- unable to recognise my display, sound card,...
We place life’s bets by countless calculations of probability, conscious and unconscious, only to discover over and over how short they fall of the wildest reaches of the possible, which always includes but exceeds the probable. It helps to remember that we ourselves are children of improbability, that everything we...
Check out As in guillotine... for more. NOTE: The idea that everything you’ve written can be digested and repackaged by an AI tool to generate “insights” “from” your “perspective” for someone else was disturbing until I also realized that output has limited use without the unique experience that informed that...

My first computer was a Commodore 128D, a successor to the Commodore 64. It had different modes you could boot into, but I almost exclusively used the C64 mode, so basically I had a C64 in a much less iconic form factor. The “D” stands for desktop - it was basically just one of those typical grey 80s/90s computer...
The state, you, and I decide what we think, and there is no choice on the matter. It’s now locked in a courthouse.I’m just waiting for Dr. Oz to come out as the DoJ’s handwriting expert to say “this letter that says ‘I, Jeffrey Epstein, was the sole trafficker of...
Log in, sign inI recently experimented with writing a new 401 page for the IndieWeb wiki to replace the default nginx page we have. My experiment is not live yet, but I wanted to document a few of the decisions I made while writing the page.First, I chose the title “You need to be logged in to see this page” which...

Last year I discovered Proust. It's really one of those things: everyone tells you you have to read Proust, but you don't, until one day you do and when you do you ask "why did no one ever tell me?". This month I finished In the Shadow of Young Girls in Flower, translated into English by James Grieve. It reminded me...
On the six month anniversary of the day I quit drinking, I marked the occasion by attending a meeting. It seemed appropriate, plus I wanted to get my coin. Getting the coin for six months was important to me; it signified that this was actually happening and that the subsequent ongoing attempt was real. I hadn't...
A special team, including prosecutors Lin Zhi Tao and Bai En Yu, works to protect children through the legal system. They come across crimes that test their emotional strength, but despite the horrifying cases, they have to fight for justice for one of society’s most vulnerable: the children. Characters Lin Zhi Tao...
One of my personal rules for social media is that I only use the web version of sites. The web version is better for privacy, far less addictive, and makes my phone less bloated. In the last few days, Reddit added a great new feature to the the mobile web version of their site. Now, when you try to browse their site...
Adding Features to Open Source ProjectsEver since setting up Indiekit for adding Micropub capabilities to my Hugo blog, I have only used its web UI to post notes, photos, and likes (haven’t tried other clients yet). The interface is not bad, but one thing that that bugs me is how links are handled in the text field....
This is another rather personal post that doesn’t really bring any tips or solutions or whatever, just rambling about myself yet again. I often call myself an introvert, and due to yesterday’s post, I got some helpful feedback, advice and opinions about it, which I appreciate a bunch! Some got me thinking about how...
Last week, I got the job offer I actually wanted, and I went on an office tour yesterday! I'm pretty sure I'm the youngest person working there.
A whole lot of things have been happening in the past month, between Wait Wait-related and personal updates. Instead of spreading it out into multiple blog posts, I decided to kind of do a Lightning round/omnibus blog post briefly touching on each item.
As mentioned in the previous post, I've been having a play around with Copilot/Claude vs Gemini when it comes to getting the agents to seek out "bad" code and improve it. In that first post on the subject, I highlighted how both tools noticed some real duplication of effort, both addressed it in more or less the...
Apple today announced financial results for its fiscal 2026 second quarter ended March 28, 2026. The Company posted quarterly revenue of $111.2 billion, up 17 percent year over year. Diluted earnings per share was $2.01, up 22 percent year over year. For comparison, Q1 2026 (last quarter) and Q2 2025 (this quarter...
This year I decided to treat myself with a new keyboard, and I’ve chosen the Keychron Q3 Max; this post is a short summary of my impressions after a few weeks of use. To begin with, the mandatory TL;DR: I love it. There is no way to put it; this is by far the best keyboard I have ever owned, and I cannot believe I...
In this era of powerful tools to find software bugs, we now see tools find a lot of problems at a high speed. This causes problems for developers, as dealing with the growing list of issues is hard. It may take a longer time to address the problems than to find them – not to mention to put them into releases and...
There are two options. One is that AI makes the pie bigger and everyone gets richer. That is, firms pay AI service providers $2 trillion/year because AI makes them more productive and therefore more profitable. Unfortunately, as far as anyone can tell, that's just not happening. The second is that the pie doesn't...
I have never come across a book so hard to classify before. Firstly, this book is beautifully written; a triumph for a first person point of view. Piranesi (the character) is kooky enough that effulgent and flowery prose is not incongruous. Framed as their journals, we open in media res with our narrator explaining...
April 2026. Saltburn-by-the-Sea. I visited the Cleveland coast in last weekend’s heatwave, or at least that’s what it felt like with the radiant heat stronger than the air temperature. My irritating 3pm GBG opener (go on, guess what it is) meant half a day to kill by the seaside, admiring Saltburn’s floral displays,...
For the second day of Golden Week, I went to see "A New Dawn" at Cinemalice in Jinbocho. This is an animated movie directed by Yoshitoshi Shinomiya. Shinomiya is a nihonga artist1 and worked under Makoto Shinkai; A New Dawn is his directional debut for a feature-length film. *This is a spoiler-free review. I won't...
You’re in a conversation that has stalled. The other person said something flat, or slightly off, or just boring. Your brain quietly assembles an exit — check the time, find a graceful pivot, invent a reason to leave. You tell yourself you’re tired. You might even be tired. But pause here: if the conversation had...
On March 14, 2021, I photographed a “banana bench” outside a townhouse stoop in Boerum Hill, Brooklyn. Not long after, on April 2, 2021, I documented that banana bench in Brooklyn Banana Bench Photo, wherein I erroneously attributed the bench to Gowanus, Brooklyn (It is actually in Boerum Hill). I did not think back...
The keyboard and mouse settings in macOS are kind of boring these days… …but somewhere deep in the underbelly of Settings lives a little nod to the original 1984 Macintosh… …in form of the tortoise/hare icons: #easter eggs #history #mac os
I didn't quit my job per se — we moved to another country with higher living costs, and the company was unable (or unwilling, depending on how you look at it) to give me the required salary increase. It was a relief, really, because pretty much everything in this article resonates with me.

matcha latte Fore biasa aja, tapi kue cempedaknya juara. Cepet banget bulan Aprilnya! Belum bisa cerita...
Tan uniform. A body that would have fit it comfortably two years ago. The optimistic hubris of the day's test subject. Carl---a middle-manager that Gerty hoped to never see again. His last name already forgotten, even though it was at the top of the form she was prompting him to sign. Even James, her supervisor,...
In which I challenge myself to draw a pokemon every day until I stop Tues 04/28/2026 - Ninjask Man, I love a bug in a sentai mask. I get that a lot of sentai masks are like, bug adjacent anyway but it's just cool. Never had one of these in a game but I'll def be on the lookout in titles where they're present. Weds...
Way back in April 2006, I launched The Splintered Mind. Happy 20th birthday, blog of mine! In 2006, academic blogs were cool. After the rise of Facebook and Twitter, most died. Recently, there's been something of a revival on Substack (where I now mirror this blog), but it's nothing like the old days, when checking...
