This is the third installment in a series of curated quote collections I've gathered while reading Darwin's famous travel book. You can also read episode 1 and episode 2. If you've read the previous two posts, you might have formed the impression that Charles Darwin's voyage aboard the HMS Beagle was all adventure...
Eagle-eyes visitors of this blog might have noticed that I have different colors here every year. I might or might not have used colors that a certain company deems to be the color of the year.Alas, that color of the year for 2026 is white. I can’t do that. Not only because my blog would look like the corporate...
a black cat saying i've tasted 9-5 and i've tasted unemployment, i recommend not being born
FIRST BIRB OF THE YEAR, Y’ALL BIG WIGGLY ZOODLES. Yes, ‘Meowgaritaville’ is the discussion-board username my wife came up with in college while in the effervescent grip of pain-relievers, and yes, I use it to designate our home and tell that story at every possible opportunity No other news! I was slightly...
For my entire 20s, I hustled non-stop. Six years of that was studying full-time while working as an audio engineer and being in a metal band. Then, I freelanced full-time as an audio engineer—not only working with bands but also teaching classes at a university—while trying to grow my YouTube channel as another...
Yes, it’s been less than a week since I wrote about LLM proofreading and showed you the “final” version of the Keyboard Maestro macro I’d been using. And that wasn’t a lie because it is the final version of that macro. It’s just that I’m now using two new macros with a different approach. Today’s post will be about...
Starting with this year, I have decided to discontinue all of my open source projects. Most notably this affects my VS Code extensions for Swift. I archieved the repositories and requested to deprecate the extensions in the Visual Studio Marketplace. Also I decided to stop my work on my toy programming language....
As I already posted, I bought a camera . I enjoy the process of consciously composing pictures and my NEX-5R is lots of fun. I recently discovered that there is a market for lens converters . I bought a Canon 50mm lens from a lovely chap in Japan and, later a weird old Tamron lens from a charity shop in Coffs...
If you’re reading this, you may have noticed that the math typesetting sometimes looks a bit weird. Slightly off. Not the perfect MathJax (or KaTeX) typesetting that we are used to.11.TLDR: The math is rendered natively by your browser using MathML Core. Firefox, followed by Chrome, currently has the best support....
Two people. Eighteen accounts spanning checking, savings, credit cards, investments. Three currencies. Twenty minutes of work every week. One net worth number I actually trust. The payoff: A single, trustworthy net worth number growing over time. No app did exactly what I needed, so I built my own personal finance...
When using Amp Code (a CLI coding agent), sending two messages in a row results in the second message interrupting the first. Most other agents (e.g. Claude Code, OpenAI Codex, Google Gemini) support message queueing by default, wherein the second message “waits” until the first promt is complete. To achieve the...
During my holiday break, I built a Stratum 1 NTP server in my home lab. Ordinarily, we get our time from internet-based NTP servers which usually Stratum 2 or 3. With Stratum 1, I can get significantly more accurate time directly from the Stratum 0 GPS satellites orbiting above me. On these satellites are atomic...
Fernando Borretti: I will often find a blog post on Hacker News that really resonates. And when I go to check the rest of the site there’s three other posts. And I think: I wish you’d write more! When I find someone whose writing I really connect with, I like to read everything they have written, or at least a...
Eu fui correr hoje. Exatamente no primeiro dia do ano. Na qual só existem pessoas de ressaca, fazendo continuando festas, soltando fogos ou indo pra casa de amigos e parentes. Eu realmente sai pra correr. Não é como se eu não tivesse feito essa meta no post de fim de ano, mas eu...
Celebrate the New Year with me as I recount the (read: my) wins of 2025, and toast to a hopeful 2026! Well, here we are. It's the end of 2025: a landmark year... for me. Well, not really; if I'm being honest, the year had its ups and downs. A lot of downs (like, a lot), and that's okay. By the way, yes: You're...
Source: Buisness Insider Channelling the legacy of Franklin D Roosevelt, the first 100 years of Trumps presidency was seen as an important benchmark to the success at his presidency. He promised to end wars, lower cost of living, fix government efficiency and end immigration. The degree to his success was is pretty...
Prologue We usually treat mathematical structures as things we look at—diagrams on a page, symbols in a line, objects to be manipulated by the intellect. But they are not objects. They are environments. They are the invisible architectures that determine what is possible, what is impossible, and what is necessary....
There are many mysteries that baffle you stupid humans, from the building of the pyramids to the meaning of life. But nothing bakes your noodles quite as much as wondering what goes on at the far end of a bowling lane. Where do the pins go? How do they know which ones to put back and which to leave down? If you’re...
Just on time, I’ve completed my listed set of goals for developing the roguelike fork of the renpy Dating Sim Engine. The biggest and most impressive feature of this fork is a standalone python simulator for DSE playthroughs, which can be used to estimate typical player stats under different play strategies or...
Watching as condensation drips from the window panes – the inside being so warm, and the outdoors being almost freezing – I notice the pink sky which signals that, soon, the sun will set. My first instinct when seeing the pink sky – the colour of the sky only intensifying as the minutes pass – was how much the...

It's 1 a.m. and I can't sleep. I'm not even trying to sleep. I'm supposed to be revising my thesis proposal right now, but I'm in the completely wrong headspace for it (still fretting over my med school applications), so I'm writing this blog post in hopes of resetting my brain. Not an auspicious start for 2026. But...

Happy New Year to all who browse here (and no, I've no idea what's going on in this image – something deeply French, no doubt). I managed to see 2026 in, despite relapsing into prostration more than once during the day. My first wish of the new year is for this cold/flu/whatever to go away and leave me in peace. As...
Warning, this ended up as mostly me rambling... What is the purpose of life anyway? If you've taken part in online discussions, particularly tech related forums, you've probably noticed that it's expected that if you want a fulfilling life — you need to become rich. Here is how to become a millionare by investing...
I’ve spent countless hours playing Balatro, and I’ve always wanted to create my own game with similar mechanics. When TrinketOS announced a game jam, it was the perfect excuse to make it happen. TrinketOS is an Android launcher with built-in lore and a meta-game: At its core, TrinketOS is a modular interface altar:...
In which I challenge myself to draw a pokemon every day until I stop Weds 12/31/2025 - Blacephalon Happy new year - I looked up "the firework pokemon" and I'm not sure what I was expecting but this wasn't it. Weird clown-like ultrabeast? What the hell even is this thing!! Next new years (if I'm still doing this)...
“If the body is not the soul, what is the soul?” wrote Walt Whitman in his heroic revolt against the lasting tyranny of Descartes, whose dismissal of the body and disdain for the soul may be the single most damaging ideological misstep of modernity. Long before we had evidence that the body is where we heal the...
Well, Happy New Year and stuff. Hope none of you stayed up too late last night, doing that celebratory thing that results in hangovers and regrets the next morning. You know who are you if you did. No judgment from me, promise. It’s snowing here in Stephen King Country as I write this, a little blanket to cover the...
I'm writing this short post so I can refer to it when I want to explain my use of services.cds when creating sample CDS models. I've found myself explaining multiple times across various blog posts1 so I thought it was time to fix that behaviour and write it once (more) and point to it. One of the axioms in CAP is...

Check out As in guillotine... for more. In which I briefly comment on the books I read each month, so a few years from now when I’m trying to remember one of them, I’ll be able to find it here. Since I’m a media omnivore, it also includes games, movies, and any other media of note that I engaged with. Do we have...
The drawing for Brazil’s largest lottery prize ever — BRL 1 billion (USD 180 million) — was postponed due to the volume of bets, which reached 125,000 per second, 120,000 of them via digital channels. The draw, originally scheduled for 10 PM on Wednesday (31st), was moved to this morning. I hope they actually make...
This was a brilliant Christmas present from my husband. It's partly a non-fiction exploration of the history of British sheep and wool, partly a directory of all the different breeds with notes on their suitability for knitting/spinning, and partly a book of knitting patterns that suit certain heritage wools.I've...
This is my first post of 2026, the 300th post since I added this blog to my website back in August 2008, and we have just entered the 30th year of existence for this website (which was originally launched back in 1996). As a consequence I feel like I have earned a little latitude from you, my imaginary reader, to...
It has been nine days since the seventh alignment of the current star cycle. Alignment Day in the core is a much bigger deal, but it felt more special here in the outer concentric. I experienced cultures mashing their own celebratory traditions together with our own, not the same tired core-sponsored military...
Most of the incidents have mitigation actions and follow-up fixes applied to the system. They focus on addressing the root cause. Do these actions mean the organization/team/systems had learned from the issue? No. If the root cause is addressed and a few more tests are added to ensure the system won't fail for the...
Bear – beautiful, whimsical, delightful, but dry on the details. This window was on the screen for many minutes: Obsidian (or, at least, the suggested Obsidian Apple Notes import plugin) – functional, informative, precise, but a bit on an uglier side: As the meme goes, why not both?#bear #details #interface design...
TL;DR: 2026 is going to be The Year of The Linux Desktop for me. I haven't booted into Windows in over 3 months on my tower and I'm starting to realize that it's not worth wasting the space for. I plan to unify my three SSDs and turn them all into btrfs drives on Fedora. I've been merely tolerating Windows 11 for a...
I have published the list of shows and movies I watched or re-watched in 2022, 2023, and 2024. Here is the list of 2025. I do not recommend them all; some of it was great, some was utterly forgettable. The Outstanding Anora Before Sunrise El Eternauta Green Book Mulholland Drive The Great A Single Life Chicken Run...
Following on shortly after the events of "Greenwitch", the fourth book in Cooper's "Sequence" sees our mate, Will Stanton, ushered off to distant family in Wales to convalesce as was the style at the time. But –horror of horrors!– he has some kind of amnesia and is distressed because he knows he has a task to...
It is now January 2026. That means it is time for our review of the months that were in The New Leaf Journal in September and October 2025. Wait what? I put off my September and October reviews for two reasons. Firstly, I have been busy. Secondly, I like to list our most-visited articles of the month and the most...
Software above some complexity level tends to sport an extension language, becoming a kind of software platform itself. Lua fills this role well, and of course there’s JavaScript for web technologies. WebAssembly generalizes this, and any Wasm-targeting programming language can extend a Wasm-hosting application. It...
Today, we had a visit from an animal that is quite rare in a city, a Gray Heron, which probably needed to inspect our neighbour’s little fish pond with the Kois. What a beauty …
Today marks the one hundred anniversary of radio in Ireland, a lot has changed since then, but the medium is still holding it’s own a century on. One hundred years ago there were an estimated 10,000 wireless sets in the country but no domestic stations on the air, this was all to change on January 1st 1926 when at...
I shouted to the void once more in December by utilizing omg.lol's statuslog without pushing it to Mastodon. It's been a good way for me to keep track of fleeting thoughts and emotional crash outs (for the most part). I have no idea who actually reads these things, but the documentation aspect of it all has been...
December 2025. Cambridge. I may have been happy to spend 25th December back in Sheffield reheating Chinese takeaways and eating crisps in the Blake with Will, but “society” insists I follow certain protocols. More to the point, our two lads wanted to see their grandparents at Christmas. Someone brought them up OK....
2025 was… a year. And I made it to the end of that year. If you’re reading this, I imagine you did too and let’s celebrate that. But also not one without loss; of loved ones, of health, of relationships, of jobs, of liberties, of pursuits of happiness. Let’s mourn those. My year was mundane by most accounts. I...
Over the last few days I read a lot of end-of-year blog posts around the small web, and I noticed that by reading personal blogs you get the full range of human experiences. Some people are doing really well and are in a good place, and some are unfortunately struggling due to health issues, financial uncertainty or...
New Year's resolutions are such a weird thing, aren't they? I think the majority of people who set them are doing so purely out of guilt and not an actual desire to improve or change something about themselves. Personally, I never set them before, but I mainly attribute that to the fact that I have only gained...
If I'm drawing or making something I can easily put on music with words in it. I can throw on a movie or tv show in the background and get to work. When I'm driving I'll have podcasts going without issue. But if I'm writing... The words I hear on the TV or in the music will override the words I am trying to hear in...
2025: what a year! So much happened, it's hard to keep track of. So here's a big collection of photos from my year. Our year began in Littleton, New Hampshire. Well, actually no -- our year began around the pellet stove at Meg's parents' house in Chittenango, New York. But our home was in Littleton, so at least we...
Aquí sigue una lista de los libros que leí el pasado año 2025: Termush, Sven Holm Tren nocturno, Martin Amis El caso Alaska Sanders, Joël Dickers Orbital, Samantha Harvey The Three-Body Problem, Cixin Liu Rendezvous with Rama, Arthur C. Clarke Parable of the Talents, Octavia E. Butler El bosque oscuro, Cixin Liu El...
To help encourage and facilitate intentional use of technology, I've declared my bedroom a technology-free space. None of my devices with screens will “live” in that room anymore. I had a 720p flat screen TV in there with a Roku, blu-ray player, VCR, VHS tape rewinder, and some VHS tapes. I moved all of that into my...
