This is an appreciation post for Jack’s recent one, I am comfortable living in Linux, but…. In the Linux vs. Mac conundrum, I’ve read endless commentary from Linux folks justifying Linux and Mac folks justifying Mac. Just as with text editors, people like what they’re familiar with. And that’s to be expected. Jack’s...
Watching the sunset from a table along The Strand, the entire view of Hermosa Beach is refracted in a wine glass, upside down of course. グラスの中の夕日 ストランド沿いのテーブルから夕日を眺めていると、ハーモサビーチの景色全体がワイングラスの中に映り込む。もちろん、逆さまに。
My last several birding outings have been with a single objective: to spot a photograph a Belted Kingfisher. So when I leave without having spotted nor photographed one, I feel as if the entire outing was a failure. I seem to have forgotten that: Nature doesn't care what bird I want to see I can still enjoy all the...
Happy Spooky Season! Here are a few photos from my phone from the last month with neither rhyme nor reason to the theme. Thanks for reading this post via RSS! Let me know your thoughts by sending me an email: rss@thomasrigby.com.
E-books (not paper/print books) seem set to start shipping with extra AI features, akin to the bonus features that once came with film and TV DVDs: Google recently announced a partnership with Bloomsbury, De Gruyter Brill, Johns Hopkins University Press, Macmillan, O’Reilly Media, and Penguin Random House to enhance...
It started with an urn for living gone wrong, the clay kiltering off center, resisting my every effort to force it back into shape. The harder I pushed to control it, the more it took on a life of its own, folding like flesh, bending like mind. I pushed and despaired, pushed and despaired, until, exhausted and...
You would think that the longer you spend in a stable relationship, the easier the decision to get married becomes. I mean, maybe that’s how it is for a lot of people, but in my case, it was the complete opposite. It was right when I started thinking about proposing that I began asking myself the questions that...
I realise I've been a bit quiet on the blog front for a few days, in part because I've also been a bit quiet on the coding front too. Looking at my GitHub contribution graph, the previous three days where I didn't commit anything are the longest run of no-commit days I've had in about 10 months. There are a couple...
My relationship with Mastodon has been somewhat tumultuous over the years, until I eventually stepped down from Fosstodon around 18 months ago. I have to say, it was the right decision. I don't miss running Fosstodon one bit. But since then, I've found myself less and less engaged in the Fediverse. Mainly because...
Read New Beginnings now!So I’m of two minds for how this story resolves… on the one hand there’s the “this home, this timeline is where the heart is” on the other, our protagonist feeling incomplete almost feels like a subconscious regret of jumping. Where do you stand on this? For me, this ending became a parallel...
What’s a lyric that resonates deeply with you and why? "But there isn’t words yet for the comfort I get From the gentle lunette at the top of the nape of the neck that I wake to" Two songs in one, and a rich seam of lyrics to be mined. Guy Garvey is, without doubt, my favourite lyricist/song writer. This song was...
Check out As in guillotine... for more. NOTE: Things are finally starting to stabilize after a chaotic summer bled into September, which ended on a high note with good news on a couple of fronts, including a new gig! More on that another time, but there’s a little hint in the Bonus section. _ONE In the Library Ebook...
September 2026. Unstone. Derbyshire. A gorgeous Saturday afternoon in Dronfield, though my plans to bring you pictures of St John the Baptist’s stained glass were halted by the arrival of the wedding car. Some similarly impressive vehicles awaited me on my return to Drone Valley Brewery in the hamlet of Unstone. My...
Google’s new arrangement for installing unverified apps on Android takes effect this Thursday (Oct. 1st) here in Brazil. Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand are also among the first countries to be affected. F-Droid and other free and/or Google-independent initiatives have been raising a ruckus over the changes. They...
In case you haven't noticed, artificial intelligence and it's potential for destroying humankind has been a hot topic lately. Evidently, we are racing toward the end of life on earth, one iteration at a time. An argument might be made that we are doing a pretty good job of messing things up without the assistance of...
2026-10-01Hello! It's October now.I wonder if I should have skipped this photograph today. It's foolish to be standing in the middle of a busy road (even though I was safe in the median) and I don't want any photograph of mine to become imitable behavior.Even still, the coloring isn't great and I don't think my...
Books and some interesting stuff I read in September 2026 Non-fiction The Dawn of Everything by David Graeber and David Wengrow (2021) 704 pages 5 stars There is no doubt that something has gone terribly wrong with the world. A very small percentage of its population do control the fates of almost everyone else, and...
I passed my driving test today! I'm relieved. It took me a lot of (expensive) lessons to be test-ready. It's done now. Finding a cheap car isn't going to be easy, and cheap insurance doesn't exist. But I'm looking forward to this new phase of freedom.
Marques Brownlee published a video commenting on YouTube’s just announced A:B testing feature. In short, for some creators, it will be possible to publish a slightly different version of the video on launch to part of their audience, if that version is deemed “close enough” to the original. Brownlee digs into how...
I’m really grateful to work at a place like GitHub where accessiblity is really taken seriously. But, industry-wide, I feel like we haven’t seen as much care and dedication to accessibility historically. Anecdotally, I’ve heard countless developers ask the question, “how do I get my bosses to care about...
The other day I came across this reel on Instagram (in Spanish) about a UFO (or “OVNI” according to the Spanish acronym) that flew over Buenos Aires on Tuesday, September 17th, 1985. View this post on Instagram What’s funny is that I remember seeing this object distinctively. I was in sixth grade of school, and had...

I’ve found that simple productivity techniques work best for me – the more complex the tool, the more likely they are to feel overwhelming and draining. The most helpful tools have been maintaining a simple to-do list daily and using the Pomodoro Technique (Wikipedia link) for short periods of focused work. I’ve...
We are at midterm at Spartanburg Methodist College--which means it's Fall Break today and tomorrow. My spouse and I will have a day of working on different projects: he's putting polyurethane on the sanded hardwood floors in the fixer-upper house in S'burg, and I have various appointments today (dermatologist, hair,...
Looking out at Millwall Inner Dock, 24 September 2026 A hectic week that, looking back, felt much longer than it was. Autumn is coming, making itself felt on Monday on my walk down to the train station; I kept swapping the hand I was using to carry a bag, burying the other one in a trouser pocket to keep warm. This...
I’ve always had a dream of having a proper workbench — a place where all the tools are in a handy drawer right next to me, and the bench being totally solid and not wobbly at all, and not having to be careful about the surfaces, and being able to just have a place to let half-finished projects just sit there and not...
a half-assed review"> Are you ready for the session? Let yourself be hypnotized and immerse yourself in the dazzling world of Moka Efti, known from the series Babylon Berlin. As a journalist, you follow the clues to a mysterious case at the famous nightclub. But can you trust your memories? So I just finished...
It just had some downtime... With some luck I've gotten it to autostart correctly next time. Thanks Antonio for reminding me :)
Born on this day in 1920 was Walter Matthau (who was not, as he liked to claim, born Walter Foghorn Matuschanskyasky, but plain Walter John Matthow). With his hangdog face and wisecracking cynicism, he was the perfect foil to his friend Jack Lemmon, with whom he made ten films. Here is my favourite Matthau anecdote:...
The title for my autobiography would probably be I Thought I Was a Child Prodigy But I Am Actually a Late Bloomer. Going from being the youngest guy in the room to the oldest guy in the room happens suddenly, surprisingly, and permanently. As such, the programming languages and technologies I learned long ago are...
01 Apple · INDEX · 03 Miniature Self-imposed constraint: Use the letters of the prompt word inside a 2-inch square to illustrate its meaning. Hongdian Black Forest fountain pen, EF, black ink on 120 gsm paper When I was growing up we had a vintage black bakelite telephone with a handset similar to this one. My...
This is a summary of comments I made at the ‘Root Access’ podcast. They are on the topic of whether to use Omarchy or not on the basis of how one feels about its author. I personally prefer the complete episode because clips can distort the vide of the event, such as by making me look angry when in fact we are...
It has been 10 years since I ran Cardboctober, a month-long hackathon in which I created something new for Google Cardboard each day and wrote about it. I considered doing it again this year, but my time is spread thinner these days than it was in 2016, so I thought I’d do a bit of a retrospective on the WebVR and...
Bit of an update! Some recent links from me, and lots of links to other people. Yes.
I was able to find 164 items that have "content creator" in the full text and were published in 1998. That's a bit down from 1997.
Oh boy it's October, you know what that means? You guessed it, time to do some thing every day of the month based on a prompt! Will you gain anything from it? Maybe? Will anyone look at it for more than 1 second before swiping away? No! Will it take up more time than you expected and will have to drop out after a...
Quoted Exclusive: A Day in the Life of Luxury With Carl Gambino by Kristine Hansen (realtor.com) "It is unusual to find a 25-foot-wide Brooklyn Heights townhouse that preserves its 1848 Greek Revival character while offering a fully rebuilt interior," says Gambino. I came across an article about a “fully restored...
Here are the non-bird pics from the zoo. Clearly mammals are the second focus for me after birds. I think I like how expressive they can be. Plus it’s easy to anthropomorphism an ape taking a nap or bears playing with a toy or a panda passed out. Size and relation to common pets also help make them relatable. But...
A cubelet is a shared deck for Magic where you can play any card facedown as a land. Sometimes the advice for cubelets is to stick to three or four archetypes but here’s a template for a full ten-archetype cubelet. Put in twenty “mega-glue” cards that are each good in exactly four archetypes each (for example five...
Hello, RSS reader! 👋 This post has some bespoke art direction you’ll only see if you view it directly. No hard feelings if you prefer to read here, I just wanted you to know! ✌️ It’s 2026, and I’m writing this post on a MacBook Air I bought in 2011. Why? It still works, for one. No dead pixels, no dents or dings in...
My hallways are boring straight lines rn but i have some ideas to add procedural randomness. Basically the large community structures are embedded under the GSV deckplates. Next, I gotta work out constraints to make clusters of quarters or side-hangars up to General Bay scale. #rasdFastwalkerLeague View on Bluesky
Happy October! This week we had a couple of rainy days and even a brief thunderstorm… but now the city is back to clear, sunny skies and temperatures of (92°F / 33°C). I’m looking forward to cooler days and for the season to feel more like fall 🍂 I’ve been watching Vampire Diaries lately and it’s such a fun show I’m...
I accidentally broke the handle for the smoothie machine, then I fixed it. I only ended up getting it for 1.50 (pre-pandemic slushie prices ...)
YouTube is planning to introduce a new feature that will allow creators to upload two different versions of the same video so they can A/B test which video performs better. It's already being done for thumbnails and titles, which is why for some videos you see the title change, sometimes more than once, during the...
What I think of the new(-ish) desktop mode, after a week of use.
Monthly reflection and outlook. September was an emotional roller coaster. The highs were high and the lows were low. Let's reflect. + I got hired. I worked at a restaurant for two days. I learned a lot about myself (good and bad). I'm also proud of myself for pushing myself to try something new in an unfamiliar...

On October 3, 2025, I published a local Brooklyn news report titled Christmas Countdown Clock in September. The article began: I was walking up Degraw Street on the afternoon of September 29, 2025, when I happened across an unexpected seasonal decoration: An inflatable snowman with a Christmas countdown clock. As...
A support ticket can contain a user’s name, a screenshot of an application, a configuration export, or notes from an incident. Copying the ticket into an AI assistant to get a quick summary may feel like routine support work. It also sends the client’s information to another service. The person who opened the ticket...
