I did it! I drew a picture in my "new" sketchbook. The first one! đ„ł Last week, I wrote a post entitled fear of the empty page where I discussed how extremely difficult it is for me to conquer blank spaces (especially in new notebooks). I shared a quote from artist, Felix Scheinberger, that captured my reticence to...
I havenât written anything here since July and my last newsletter was in May. It is the longest I have gone without writing in over a decade. The irony is that I started my monthly newsletter 11 years ago to write off my health stress. But this year it is the health stress that kept [âŠ]
Here is my late entry for the IndieWeb Fiction Carnival for September! The theme was: Moonlight, hosted by James. We are always three I was told about the astral bodies in the sky, of how the darkness used to be full of dots of light. I donât understand the stories, there is no sky outside. We are going to a new sun...
Michael writes about blogs disappearing due to rising costs in domains and I agree with him that this is an ongoing issue. My previous blog was available at antoniosantos.io and the primary reason I moved to this domain was the .io TLD renewal price increasing to over $51 dollars. That was just way too much to pay...
Hereâs some stuff Iâve experienced lately (and not necessarily only new releases)...
Yesterday, we made a quick grocery store stop on our way back from Spartanburg. At one point, I heard an announcement over the loudspeaker, so I went to the in-store Starbucks. I had heard correctly--they were giving out samples of Pumpkin Spice Latte--yum.For me, though, this season is really Pumpkin Sketching...
Not every presentation needs slides, but when they earn their place, they work as a visual channel that complements the speaker rather than replacing them. Sumeet Gayathri Moghe sets out the principles that follow from that idea â control over the rate of knowledge exposition, tight coupling between slides and...
As the nights draw in and the sun becomes a long-distant memory, reasons to venture out with a camera are fewer and fewer. So, here are 31 prompts for October to encourage you out of a slump (like me) or whatever. I will almost certainly not do all 31! I will update this post periodically (I have other stuff to do!)...
This blog has moved from WordPress.com to self-hosting. If you were following it via WordPress, you should use an RSS reader pointed at nolanlawson.com/feed instead. WordPress has served me faithfully for 15 years, but I think itâs time to move on. A few things have nudged me in that direction: The recent drama...
âTalent is insignificant. I know a lot of talented ruins. Beyond talent lie all the usual words: discipline, love, luck, but most of all, endurance.â In 1989, Paris Review founding editor and trailblazing interviewer George Plimpton edited a wonderful collection titled The Writerâs Chapbook: A Compendium of Fact,...
Berlin, January 1933: Hitlerâs appointment as Chancellor marks the beginning of the darkest chapter in German history. Charlotte Ritter investigates a series of murders targeting former frontline soldiers. Connections and motives trace back to 1918. Almost ten years after its debut, the fifth Season of Babylon...
Adelaide Hills, South Australia, based author Pip Williamsâ third novel, The German Ward, was published recently. Her debut, The Dictionary of Lost Words, and second, The Bookbinder of Jericho, were set in Oxford, England, prior to, and during World War I, and share a few characters. While The German Ward is a...
I recently spoke at a philosophical symposium that was organised by an acquaintance in my region. This was a small circle of people whom I know. Other than me, there were 9 men and 5 women present. 3 people were of Balkan background, which I will keep generic, and the rest were Greek Cypriots. What follows is a...
I've redesigned my photography website. It now features my personal work as well as a page for my documentary and behind-the-scenes commissions. I'm really pleased with it. If you know anyone looking to document daily life at their company, or with a project, please put them in touch.https://ollyheadey.com

Mike Zaschka, speaker, developer and active member of the community, has just announced "onedevatlas", which feels to me like something we need but didn't realise it. The SAP community has produced various catalogues of tools and libraries in the past, and these have been great. But perhaps in today's age, where...
The AI Pascalâs Wager Should you accept contributions generated by LLMs in your Open Source project? Letâs put aside for a moment all the ethical/ecological/societal considerations about the use of generated code (also known as "slop" if you donât like it and "vibecode" if you do) in open source projects and...
A detail from In the Dark Woods, 2019, from my Acid Renaissance series. I recently read, and greatly enjoyed, Alan Mooreâs latest novel I Hear a New World, the second instalment in Mooreâs Long London series, following on from The Great When. Iâm not here to review it, but I would highly recommend it and its...
â Today is my last day at Tulip. I should write about my experience sometime. For now, Iâll just say that I had a better experience here than in Google Germany1. Pull Request (PR) stats by year of PR creation: 460 (2024) 1,096 (2025) 1,468 (2026 to date) Clearly LLM assistance has significantly increased my...
Today marks a year since my little sister, Lisa, took her own life. She was 34. It was an overdose, but we don't know if it was an accident or suicide. Weâll never get an answer, yet I lean toward believing it was by choice. As grim as it sounds, picturing her with some control over the end brings me a small measure...
This is my first time hosting the IndieWeb Fiction Carnival, and I am also hosting the IndieWeb Blog Carnival. It was an impulse, inspired by the itch for creative writing, while noticing no one had claimed the October spot. So why not? I noticed participation in the Fiction Carnival is less intense than in the Blog...
img { display: inline-block; } rose Started feeling a lot better; more hopeful, more together, more focused and motivated. I met up with Xaya, her girlfriend, and Kami in real life. :) went to a café, then went back to my place to play some games. I added new pictures to my blog - on my /now page and my author page....
September was another big month for my life, mostly for me offline. Another good month for bicycle riding, seeing more of the trails on Randalls and Wards Islands. The New York area has taught me a few things about islands and one of them is that they're very fungible. On a map, Randalls and Wards Islands look one...

Quoted Toys R Us is leaving Japan after 35 years in the country by Casey Baseel (soranews24.com) For the past nine years, Toys R Us has been part of this category too. Even after the chain closed its last U.S. branch in 2017, Toys R Us Japan kept chugging along. Sadly, though, the company has finally reached its...
Music Iâve bought in September. I almost didnât buy anything this month (after the bumper crop last month). Letâs see⊠The biggest news is, of course, that Team Dresch have a new album out! Almost 30 years after the previous one! And itâs good! And I finally got around to buying the new Charli XCX album. And⊠I love...

When I first saw the trailer for this show, I was all in: two women âof a certain ageâ being the protagonists of an action adventure show with some comedic elements? Yes, PLEASE! I eventually binged all eight episodes, and while I liked it well enough, I had issues with a couple of aspects of the show. Beware:...
Some things Iâve been thinking about or doing this month: With the end of a major project in sight, Iâm hoping that Iâll have a bit more time for posting here soon (or soonish⊠or eventually). Iâve been thinking about topics for posts and a few changes for this website, including adding these monthly updates. Iâd...
Continuing the theme of software fixes for hardware problems, hereâs an essay I wrote in 2016 about a broken computer display that I âfixedâ as a teenager, just because I wanted to play Civilization. It remains one of my favourite things Iâve ever written.#hacks #marcin wichary
As someone who writes often and at length about the relativity of boundaries and the complex interrelation of everything with everything else, I find most black-and-white opinions, most expressions of certainty, and most refusals to listen to differing points of view distasteful. If the way I perceive the world...
2026-09-30Hello!If I had not insisted on experimenting with this photo, I might have thrown it out. And now, it's one of my favorite images.Hanging in my room is a bit of watercolor artwork that I purchased on the used market. It combines streaks and splotches of color on a white canvas, and it has levels of detail...
If your life were a movie, what would its theme song be? I use the word melancholy fairly often when describing my moods. I donât see it as a negative thing at all, itâs just how Iâve always been. Iâm not overly pessimistic, but definitely not the most optimistic person. The moment I saw this prompt, this is the...

September 2026. North Hykeham. Lincolnshire. Friday was a perfect day, and not in a corny Lou Reed charity single way. I drove down to see Dad, who despite advancing dementia was as chatty as heâs been for many months, was eating well, and had somehow acquired the Russian residentâs hat. I stayed a couple of hours,...
In a comment on an earlier post, a professor suggested as a topic for discussion, âAcademic integrity violations becoming commonplace (analog, not just AI!) and what to do about it.â Diane Arbus, âScreaming woman with blood on her handsâ Iâve certainly heard from many professors about rampant AI-enabled cheating in...

A few weeks ago I realized in mid-act that I hadn't gotten around to writing something I'd intended to some years ago - how to upgrade Huginn if you're running it in a reasonably pedestrian (read: not using Docker) way. Additionally, I realized when I upgraded my exocortex at the time the process I had in my notes...
Published by AHE. on 01st October 2026 I taped for an advert about a week ago. I won't go into details for obvious reasons but they wanted me to tape for multiple characters. One character required a second person in the tape, so my endlessly patient partner had to step in for that one, and the second required...
Marques Brownlee just released a video essay titled âDear YouTubeâ. I loved it. He talks about how YouTube is going to start shipping this new feature where makers can essentially publish different âvariantsâ of their videos and see which performs best (an A/B test). Which immediately begs a lot of questions....
Iâll admit that the first thing I looked into regarding yesterdayâs âSuper Intelligenceâ meeting at the White House was whether Tim Cook was there. He wasnât, which was probably a relief to Tim, even though itâs also an admission that Apple isnât considered a player in AI. By anyone, not even the idiots in the Trump...

Work gives me a certain cheap sense of purpose that makes me feel good. And yes, Iâm talking about corporate work, the 9-to-5, the most basic kind you can think of. It makes me feel good because every day I show up at the time I was told to, do what someone else asks me to do, and then leave at the time Iâm allowed...

As everyone knows, the USA is drastically affecting just about everything with regards to the global economy. Inflation and with it the "normal" response from the Bank of Canada will be to raise interest rates. However, I don't think that is the right thing to do, because the way that raising the base interest rate...
