I made a note of it, but Bryan Cantrill wrote a post about the ex-Anthropic employee who pegged the probability of AI killing humanity in the next decade at >10%. The article is a good one and you should read it, but what I want to capture here is a side story from Cantrill on the Oxide and Friends podcast where he...
The fish rots from the head, and this particular fish is headed by a compromised oligarch with a history of throwing journalists under the bus to advance his business interests‘Nuff said. I mean, I get the hesitation, they’re scared. But in a situation like this, you have to use every lever you have, and that means...

The weather was comfy this week, not a lot of rain, but the chill is starting to be noticeable. I still haven’t worn anything on top of my regular t-shirts though. These weeknotes will cover September 15 to 21, 2026. Honestly, the stars stars aligned, and I pretty much wrote about every interesting thing happening,...
Winnie Lim: It takes spiritual energy to create, maintain and produce personal projects. At the core, these projects exists because there is a belief in some sense of shared humanity. I write because I believe someone out there resonates with my experiences. But when everything starts to be about speed, utility and...
What’s a song that helps you focus or concentrate? I have a full playlist of tracks like this, it’s called ElectroBurbleWorkTime. This artist features heavily and whilst I tend to lay the full album whenevr I can, this track is one I find great for focus work. “Emerald Rush” by Jon Hopkins Listen on Apple Music Your...
A screensaver that displays, in giant numbers, the temperature and/or the hour against a black background. There are 30 fonts to choose from, many combinations, and an option that moves the pixels a little bit once in a while to avoid to “burn” OLED screens. Free, for macOS and Windows.
Those who saw you being born, their friends, their relatives - all will probably die before you. With them, they will bring their identities, relationships - their shared culture. Left will only be you, and those who came after you. I've always seen society and culture as being steered by the older generation....
The example here relates to using the jl CLI, the command line tool for Joule Studio. Unless otherwise stated, activities described here all happen in the container. Starting the authentication flow To use jl in a project, we need to first authenticate with a Joule Studio backend, using jl login, specifying the...
I've always made the :visited attribute for hyperlinks look the same as links that haven't been visited, and it seems that it's the default behaviour across the web. I've never really given it much thought, until I actually used :visited in anger. My feed reader of choice, Miniflux uses the :visited attribute...
Daily Pook-Emu Bee links ceased being daily for the last week and change, but perhaps it is back with two straight editions to start the new week. 1 | Calibre 9.15 E-Book Manager Introduces “Create Your Own Adventure” Writing Game (Marcus Nestor for 9 To 5 Linux.
A thousand curses on whoever decided to reorganise the main navigation on Github so that "Agents" comes before "Actions". While I'm not a fan of "Agents" in the first place, I reluctantly accept that they're a part of Github. However, I am also old man shakes fist at clouds dot gif. On mobile, the navigation...
Weekly cleaning and home improvement series, with some thoughts in between. Late start today. We didn't have breakfast food so we went grocery shopping first thing after we got up. Thanks to my budget, I've created a "Weekly Groceries" list in Listonic so it'll be easier to get through. Cutie Boba from this morning....
I skipped my 10K run on Sunday. My knees had been hurting a bit. In fact, they still do. My plan is to get back into the schedule tomorrow with a 5K; perhaps I should run a little slower.
September 2026. Barnsley. If put on the spot and asked to pick ONE (1) Barnsley pub, it would have been the Old No.7, Acorn’s flagship and the best place to drink the revived Barnsley Bitter. Not any more. Sold to Valiant in 2023, it still feels a cask pub, but today there’s a Tap Takeover (ugh) by West Yorkshire’s...
Exploring the intersection of time and decision-making to shine a light on what it means to be human. “We never live; we are always in the expectation of living,” Voltaire famously lamented. This tension between anticipation and impatience, indeed, seems central to the human condition. In Wait: The Art and Science...
Writing for Social Europe, in an article titled Europe Cannot Defend Its Values by Teaching Them Professor Jørn Bjerre makes a case in favour of liberal democracy in the European Union: Only by building institutions in which rational argument takes precedence over utility can we prove al-Nabhani wrong when he claims...
“Only you would think it’s romantic to go to the beach in October storms!” I tilt my head into the wind and yell, “Babe, don’t you feel invigorated?” He growls, “I feel cold and all stormed out. I’m going to the beach cafe, and get coffee to warm up.” I turn to him and grin, “Get me a hot cocoa.” He kisses me gently...
I remade the Future Horizon Design logo so the shell now has an inhabitant - a hermit crab.

Originally published on my Substack: Insects Matter Not more than people Animal welfare is an issue which cuts across traditional political divisions: it has advocates and opponents on the far right, far left and everywhere in between. Generally, animal welfare is associated with the left, but that link is weak and...
Up there with animals called "lesser" or "least" but with a twist As I've mentioned before on the blog, I get a certain amount of enjoyment from following the hourly bats account on Mastodon; it provides incredible pictures of our winged friends and teaches me just how much fucking biodiversity exists in the bat...
This post is about the weather widget in the upper corner of my website. The widget is part of my .Net Core website. In this post I explain how the widget works and how you can use this widget in your app.

You know those people (maybe you are one of them) who have a journal they carry with them and in addition to their writing, they make little drawings of what they observe. A coffee cup. A street performer. Trees. Birds. Buildings. All the little things that capture one's attention day to day. I've always wanted to...
I read note taking: analog and digital from lucky instar so I thought it’d be fun to write about taking notes. The question is: How do you take notes on things? Physical Notes The answer is it depends on what I need the notes for! For personal interests like books it’s always a legal pad and a pen. Before that I...

2026-09-21Hello!I have half a mind to buy up some of this collection. I'm not saying where it is, in case I ever return for real, but the prices were reasonable enough where I could justify spending money on this.I ought to look up the history of certain cameras — I don't know much about Minolta or Olympus! This...
One of the regular treats of my boyhood was going to see the latest Peter Sellers film as it came out. My father was a huge fan, and so was I, right from the get-go. I remember seeing a string of wonderful comedies – I'm All Right Jack, Two Way Stretch, The Wrong Arm of the Law, Heavens Above!, Dr Strangelove, the...
I had hoped to review this second entry in the Dorothy Gentleman‘s series, back in March; alas, best laid plans and all that.My reading mojo has been so inconsistent, that it’s now over six months after publication. Beware: Alzheimer’s Nobody’s Baby, by Olivia Waite One of the very real joys of genre fiction is...

I got bit by the self-hosting bug this weekend, and boy it's been fun! You see, I've had a Synology DS923+ and HP Victus 15L that have been sitting around gathering dust in the basement. In a desire to stop spending subscription fees to Apple and Google for photo storage, I decided to move the machines to my...
Sure, you could run a local LLM model on your computer and use it to generate some SQL to help you create a report. Or generate awful art for your D&D campaign with your friends. But who made that model? Who trained it? Where did the data come from? How much did it cost in compute and environmental resources? What...
Roshan: Wikipen [[File:{{#setmainimage:Screenshot_-_Bitwarden_Chrome_Extension.jpg}}|thumb|This used to be instantaneous. Then one day it took 5 seconds. I wrote my last post at a cafe on my laptop. As I was writing the post and testing the Spaces-switching shortcuts to try to justify my rant, I was thinking, you know, this isn’t that bad. Why have I been so bothered by it? Later, after posting, I saw this: Just wait until you notice that it’s inexplicably slower on...
Here’s some comics I’ve read over the past week. This is the second biiig collection of Michel Fiffe’s Copra — this one is over 400 pages long. And this one has a lot of issues I can’t remember reading — distribution of the original self-published Copra was always pretty spotty, so I think I’ve got about half of...
September 21, 2026 I've been experimenting with Spotlight's Siri AI integration since updating to macOS 27. I wanted to launch a Keyboard Maestro macro from Spotlight, but selecting the macro opened it in the editor instead. So I asked Siri AI how I might do that and it suggested exporting the macro as a trigger...
I have spent the last 10 minutes reading a Wikipedia article about Hurricane Hugo. People who dismiss Wikipedia articles probably haven't read any in the past 20 years--they can be downright scholarly. I got absorbed in various parts of the history of that storm, when all I really wanted to know is the day and time...
This is the second book of Murakami I am reading, which I finished before finishing the first one. I was impressed by his writing style while reading his memoir where he mentioned about this book. So I decided to check his first creation as a writer. It's a short book without any concrete story. The protagonist...
I sat down at my desk at about 08:40 this morning and, five minutes later, got an email from Valve to say they were preparing my Steam Frame for shipping! On visiting the site, it said it was shipped. Checking with the carrier, there's the usual message to say they're aware of the package but haven't picked it up...
I wanted local news for Wassenaar, but without press releases pretending to be journalism, political parties' own opinions dressed up as reporting, and definitely without gambling ads. So I built my own aggregator. The idea is simple enough: pull RSS from every local source I can find, dump it in a database, filter...
Alt text support coming to Pagecord soon thanks to Bruno Prieto's fine work! ✨
This last weekend was the second Booked Eau Claire event, and my first time tabling at it. I volunteered there last year, so I knew what the vibes would be overall. I had a really good time at the event, and it gave me the opportunity to hang out with some cool people (like E.H. Lupton). Honestly it's just fun to...
Designer Reimar Servas goes further than the usual Border Radius Discourse and thinks about the deeper but often ignored questions of border radii as a system, and about the consequences of such a system that go beyond visuals: […] These redesign efforts suggest ignorance of a fundamental problem: rounded forms have...

It wouldn’t be a stretch to call Edwin C. Litchfield the father of Park Slope. Born in 1815, Litchfield became a prominent lawyer who resided in Greenwich Village and made big money investing in railways. In 1852, he saw the potential of a new kind of investment: in land on the sleepy outskirts of Brooklyn....
In the late 1990s I created a website for my Dad who was an actor, writer and director. As well as a media instructor. To promote him as a voice talent and gain students for his different classes. The early days of using Yahoo site builder eventually lead to a poor man’s Frontpage called Namo. Then in the early...
Thoughts on notes, tasks, and life Today a registered letter arrived at my place. It was a conspicuously passport-sized envelope, addressed to my baby grandson. I signed for it, and immediately sent a photo of the envelope with his mother to announce its anticipated arrival. Hooray! she exclaimed. Open it, and show...
An exploration of every facet of “Weird Al” Yankovic’s life, from his meteoric rise to fame with his parody songs to his torrid celebrity love affairs and famously depraved lifestyle. In classic Weird Al fashion, this movie is totally not a serious biopic, but it does a great job at telling a good story. Filled with...
