It has been a week-end of restocking supply shelves and catching up on maintenance tasks. Even after 2 trips to the grocery store on Friday, I woke up yesterday and realized we had forgotten to get toilet paper. So it was off to Walmart, and if I go to Walmart, why not stock up on other items, like baking...
Yes, there is a tension between how in minimalism we want less physical stuff whereas how in the, uh, “intentional tech” movement (sometimes called “digital minimalism”) there’s this tendency to accrue a bunch of single-use items. A minimalist might ask “why should I need a shelf full of paper books, a computer, a...

Here’s my iPhone Hall of Fame: iPhone (original) iPhone 4 iPhone X iPhone 12 Mini iPod Touch Notes: How do you not put the OG iPhone at the top spot? It’s like doing a Mount Rushmore and...
From 737 to 742 the Duchy of the Venetians wasn't ruled by dukes, but by military commanders with the Byzantine title of "magister militum".
For decades, we’ve been debating the horrific dystopian world depicted by George Orwell in 1984. I particularly remember the old reassuring adage: putting the Party controlling machinery in place would be unfeasible because of technicalities. Too many cameras, too much maintenance, too many people required to be “on...
Also published on Letterboxd Stylized entertainment with some great choreography. There are some big misses. The diner scene for example, which seems to be one of crowd’s favorites, left me cold. It’s a manifestation of “no means yes” misogynistic bullshit. The relationship feels as if it was simply ordained by the...
Originally published on my Substack: No one thinks that LLMs are sentient So why are we treating them that way? Jeff Sebo is concerned about ants. He calls on us to imagine, “You notice an ant struggling in a puddle of water. Their legs thrash as they fight to stay afloat. You could walk past, or you could take a...
Lately I've been playing classic World of Warcraft to get a feel for it and see if I like it before I try and go head-first into WoW Forever fairly blind with some friends. People have told me that World of Warcraft is good, but I haven't personally played it (or really any MMO outside of Final Fantasy 14). I've...
The Forge Wars 2026-09-20 No fate but what we make Lately I’ve been experiencing forge fatigue. Most of my projects are hosted and mirrored across Codeberg, Sourcehut, and GitHub. My main issue has been trying to determine the best “home base” or deciding which one to be the real git forge. It’s annoying. The...
It looks like things are moving a wee bit quicker than I remember when I bought the Steam Controller, with the status of my Steam Frame purchase moving to "packaged" pretty quickly. I'm curious as to when it will arrive. The small number of times that I've purchased Valve hardware, I've generally found the actual...
It’s not the only Brooklyn manhole cover with “Catskill water” embossed in iron. But it’s the one that caught my eye when I found myself at St. Marks Place and Washington Avenue in Prospect Heights earlier this summer. And it led me to do a little research and discover that in 1917, Brooklyn began getting the bulk...
I have not had much time to post new articles (long or short lately), but let us get the last full week of September off to a good start with a new edition of the Pook-Emu Bee. 1 | Linux 7.3 Adds Support For Victrix Pro BFG & Azeron Controllers (Michael Larabel for Phoronix. Sep. 20, 2026.) I have questions here....
I’m sure the iPhone Duo will be a perfectly fine device, but having reviewed my fair share of two-handed foldable phones, i just don’t get the hype. You might believe iOS will make all the difference, and i have to admit that the incredibly smooth opening animation might push people to actually unfold their device,...
Ho SC-H, Lee IXY, Liu C, Yu M, Tan HC, Tan GSW and Liu Y-C (2026) Fenofibrate in ophthalmology: therapeutic efficacy and mechanisms. J. Pharm. Pharm. Sci. 29:16995. doi: 10.3389/jpps.2026.16995 I have genetically high triglycerides, and I have taken fenofibrate in the past. I think that’s what drew me to this...
Whether you love it or hate it, I don’t think there is any denying that generative AI is an incredible technical achievement. I use Claude, ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot multiple times a day for all kinds of different things. But I’ve been struggling with questions about the technology that nobody around me seems...
It’s been a while, but here are some good bites collected from the ad-free, open-source social network known as the fediverse: You’d be surprised what a tool like 7zip can do, besides opening all possible types of archive files. Opening EXT partitions from USB drives on Windows, for example. Or reading VHDX files....
Fabulism and Style A week of tales; a week of words. Reading the masterpiece titled “Einstein’s Dreams” by Alan Lightman , I realized that my words were enough after all. There is elegance in simplicity, an enchantment of sorts, and thus I revisit the source of my words, my voice; though I still intend on using...
Just as there is a ticking bomb built into cut/⌘X – if you cut something, and then cut something else again without a paste in between, you overwrite the clipboard without any way to bring it back – there is another one that awaits you when you use undo/⌘Z. Here’s a typical undo chain, illustrated using Photoshop’s...
Omarchy 21 Sep, 2026 I made the jump to Linux in 2019, and I've been using it regularly ever since. I must admit that distro hopping is fun. I've done my fair share of it in the past. I've tried Ubuntu, Arch, Manjaro, Mabox, and Debian for extended periods, and many more just briefly. This year I spent my August...
La prière d'une vierge. Auguste Jean Baptiste Roubille, 1899. Public domain image via Wikimedia Commons. A weird little book found me this week, thanks to a little free library. I’d never heard of Catalan author Irene Solà, but seeing that Graywolf was the publisher of her I Gave You Eyes and You Looked Toward...
Published by AHE. on 21st September 2026 Self tapes are basically the default form of audition these days. So much so that when I actually get in the room with someone I make a point of thanking them for going to the trouble of setting it up. I've never run an audition process before, but from making my own work I...
In teoria. L’anello osserva,...
Earlier this week Daniel Roe wrote a blog post called "Don't be nice." It's a short read so you should just take a glance at it, but the TL;DR is that someone joined the Nuxt community server with an avatar of a man wearing a Nazi uniform, and the offender was swiftly removed. The point of the post was that there...
I don’t usually check analytics on my website, but the hosting I use on Vercel does provide the ability to check referrals, and I have to admit, every once in a while I enjoy to see those! It’s not because I am obsessed with people who visit my website (although I kind of am), or because I want to write according to...
Once, at the gym with a physicist friend, I was struck by how no one else in the room had any idea that while she was sweating on the treadmill with a blank stare into space, she was doing advanced mathematics working out the logic of black holes. Another time, on the train with a poet friend, none of the other...
Big title! I’ve been thinking a lot how nowadays I come across more blogs and articles in languages I don’t know. On regular social media very rarely do I see things in languages besides English / Spanish. The exception to this is often about the soccer players I follow, like with Armando González recently signing...
The Australian Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, appears to have watered down a commitment to compensate Australian creatives whose work is being copied by AI companies. In a speech given at the University of Sydney, in July this year, Albanese undertook to enshrine, in law, copyright protection for all Australian...
What’s your favorite collaboration between artists? My actual favourite is only on YouTube — the cover of While My Guitar Gently Weeps performed by Rock n Roll Hall of Famers and includes THAT guitar solo by Prince — so in lieu of that, the answer is obvious. I was heavy into rock music as a young boy, discovering...
I was in Bad Segeberg over the weekend to visit my grandmother, who lives with dementia. Interacting with her is always so demanding, as she constantly repeats how lonely she is and tells hurting stories about my grandfather’s and my father’s deaths. That those two are gone for ten and nine years already seems to be...
2026-09-20Hello!I'm not familiar with architecture or design, so I can't imagine the planning and permission required to install hundreds of reflective glass panels to cover this building (a parking garage?). It's like a modern skyscraper, but fancier and more fragile. And without scraping the sky.I remember the...
All too often on my computer, I’ll finish typing something, reach for my mouse, and have no idea where the cursor has got to. Not on the monitor I was looking at. Possibly on the laptop screen, but I’d have to turn my head and check. So I do what I always do, shake the mouse until macOS inflates the cursor to the...
14th September - 20th September The Red Creep™ has started making its way across the maples in the graveyard, the sweetbriar has produced rosehips, days have tipped to more than 50% rainy and, most telling of all, I put the heating on one afternoon. Autumn is here a week early. If you've read these long enough...
Suomalaisena omaan yleisen asenteen, jossa hybrisioperaatioille hymähdellään hassuna, herrojen uutena trendisanana jolla perustella taas milloin mitäkin intoilua. Päätin tarkastaa mistä oikein on kyse, kun niiden perusteella pitäisi nyt muka ryhtyä avoimeen sotaan.
OverviewThe common thread this week is control-plane risk. Cisco confirmed active attacks against email-security and network-access appliances, CISA flagged exploitation of ScreenConnect and GitLab, ransomware crews moved onto a vCenter flaw, and attackers used Artifactory and Conductor weaknesses to turn trusted...
The internet we know isn’t gone — it is being hidden under platform noise. And it seems like big platforms want to make us forget that this internet still exists. But while platforms rise and fall, the real internet is built on simple, open protocols like email, chat, and feeds — and they remain. Terry […]
A review of the book "Rich Dad Poor Dad" by Robert Kiyosaki, exploring the principles of financial education and wealth building.
When I was a little girl, I loved the rain. While everyone in my family hid from the raindrops, I headed out, with my bright yellow raincoat on, and my yellow polkadot boots, and I ran out to jump in puddles, and stand with my head tilted back, catching raindrops on my tongue. My favourite spot to be in the rain was...
September 2026. Huntingdon. It hardly mattered as I was about to drive Mrs RM home from Huntingdon station, but the stagnation of the pub scene (ugh) in what you’d assume to be an affluent Cambridgeshire market town is quite something. First appearances can be deceptive. Entry into town over the Great Ouse takes you...
Same week as every week, except yesterday I went to a small comedy show with my brother-in-law. It was okay, I guess – four comedians. One was good, one was very obviously at the very beginning of their career, one was okay-ish and one was an ex-cop who joked about bullying teenagers when he was in uniform because...
