The year is 2000 or 2001. Argentine comedian Alfredo Casero, known in the country for a quite revolutionary comedy show on TV called “Cha Cha Cha”, which aired in the early 90’s, went to a Japanese restaurant to eat some sushi, a dish that had just arrived to the country and was the latest culinary hype. In between...
Ursus Hypatos was the third doge of Venice, likely the first chosen locally, but we have almost no sources for him.
From the Compose key Wikipedia page: A compose key (sometimes called multi key) is a key on a computer keyboard that indicates that the following (usually 2 or more) keystrokes trigger the insertion of an alternate character, typically a precomposed character or a symbol. In Linux, the default compose key...
Kiwi PyCon West Island (Known to some as "PyCon AU"), was on this past weekend. And, because I wanted, and kinda had to, go, I went to Brisbane for a week and a half. Mostly enjoying holiday, and have 3 days of conference in the middle.
A few days ago Ruben wrote a quick post about finding a FIGlet in the Internet Archive's HTML code. What's a FIGlet? "FIGlet is a program for making large letters out of ordinary text". ASCII-art, in other words. Curiously, I can't find this in the Internet Archive's sources, I don't know where he saw it... But...
New links in the Heap… “There are just so many other things you could be doing” — Daniel Groll wrote something for his students about the role of phones in their lives. (Perhaps it would work better as a TikTok?) “I can now keep walking and say things like ‘Find the relevant sections of the papers I mentioned, add...
I was showing a friend the Pokémon gen1recomp project on my phone the other day, and he wanted it on his. Easy enough. Hand over the APK and the files it needs, walk him through the setup, ten minutes while we’re sat in the same room. Except his Pixel 10, running Android 17, wouldn’t have it. Install blocked,...
Share a song that changed your perspective on music. First question I have to ask myself is, what is my perspective on music, and has it ever changed? I grew up with music, music playing in the kitchen, the radio or cassettes in the car, the LPs in the living room, the piano, my Dad’s guitar and harmonica. I...
A mission post by Lieutenant JG Sean Morgan, Lieutenant Weho Lape Sabril, Ensign Miles Archer, NPCs (Z) Mission - Lick Your Fingers Clean The walk to the second room marked on the map went much as the first had. There wasn't anything of note along the tunnels through the rock, though there was enough of an incline...

I don’t know much about Empire of the Sun besides their biggest hit (so far) and unique visual style. So I went into seeing them live with an open mind and appetite for spectacle. What I didn’t expect was being the oldest person at the show for a band that debuted 18 years ago. I’d later learn they’d gotten a boost...
The time has come for me to come back to my second home. I mean that very figuratively because for the past two years my second home was my apartment, which I let go of and got in exchange a room at Maison d'Île de France at the Cité Internationale Universitaire. Moving was not very fun but that's okay, because I...
This is to mainly answer the questions, how to syndicate my work and to answer some questions surrounding the respectability of syndication. Let’s first answer the question, may you syndicate my work. Yes. You may syndicate my work. You may syndicate my work because that's combatting censorship, and I'm one hundred...
On this day in 1939, Britain declared war on Germany, and we were launched into the Second World War. In London, sirens blared out, but it turned out to be a false alarm. Elsewhere on the home front, things were quieter...
I read Guy Standing's short essay on education in Monocle's Issue #195. I have mixed thoughts about Guy's arguments. I think the introduction explains the whole article well: The acquisition of knowledge is becoming more commodified, seen as a way of filling gaps in the workforce. But for a society to thrive, it...
I keep forgetting to post this list! Funny too, because I was struggling in the last week of (bl)august to find something to share! So I’ve already read two of the books on my list. Feel accomplished :D The orange coloured ones are in progress. Robert Jackson Bennett - A Drop of Corruption ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Ashlyn Kane &...
Looking in the window of jAdis, a vintage science toy/prop store is always a treat. ヴィンテージの科学玩具・小道具店であるjAdisのショーウィンドウを覗くのは、いつだって楽しみだ。
I’ve been reading Josh Ellis’ blog for a couple of years maybe, since finding a link there on Dense Discovery once. Ellis has been at it since 2004, so achievement unlocked. In his latest post, he ruminates about writing a book. Acquaintances of his have made the suggestion over the years. I’ve had the same. “You...
This post is a part of my word-vomit series. Feel free to skip it.I have not written any long post for almost a month as I felt my writing juices were over. I needed to replenish them to start writing but I guess that will take a long time. Meanwhile, I was posting about books and movies, both of which I am...

Speaking of cut in File Explorer, Will McGugan, creator of the writing editor Ishmael, proposes doing the same thing for text editing – that is, leaving ghost text behind: I call it “Ghost Cut”, and it works like this: pressing Ctrl+X fades the selected text and makes it inert—you can’t click on the cut text and the...
I was reading Jason Gorman’s article “The Wall Confronting Reliable Coding Agent Autonomy” and he says: the journey from 90% to 99% reliability is just as hard as it was to get to 90%. And from 99% to 99.9% is just as hard again. This stood out, as I’ve been experiencing more and more “downtime” in my day-to-day...
cornix This assembled keyboard just arrived through the post. It's called CORNIX LP. To be honest, I have a "corne" keyboard kit to be assembled for many years waiting for me to find time and dedication to tackle it, but, well, I just didn't. It's not that I sat empty handed being bored. Anyway, the other day I came...
For as long as I can remember, computers have been a creative hobby for me. As a kid, I “hacked” programs with ResEdit on Macintosh System 9. I wrote programs in C++ on a Palm Pilot and built apps in Chipmunk BASIC on our iMac G3. Through high school, college and my career I’ve always been working on some side...
2026-09-03Hello!One of the reasons that Day 200: Two Hundred Links was late — 83 hours late, in fact — in its publishing was because I wanted to get it checked through multiple checks of quality control. If I had even more time, I would have sent the draft to a few people for a sanity check. Nevertheless, I sent a...
I want to apologize (again) for the dead silence in the blog for the past…almost three months? (Yikes!), and to promise to do better, but things are hard and too much right now, and I really don’t know what will happen in a few hours, never mind tomorrow. All I can say is that I’m still here, at least for now, and...
Today I spent a little time tutoring high school students in the neighborhood of my former school (where I was a principal for fourteen years). I can’t get over how sensitive and impressionable kids this age can be. The young man I was working with was convinced that one of his teachers hates him. I asked what made...
While I’m taking a short break from low-level programming, here’s a story by a friend of mine, Sonya, about debugging a seemingly impossible bug in ARM code. This bug hunting saga started several months ago. While developing a bare-metal hypervisor on ARM64 for postmarketOS, I hit a strange bug: if I enabled the...
I finally got around to self-hosting Home Assistant on my home server, and one of my early discoveries was that CO2 rapidly spikes into the warning zone when I’m working in my home office. Something to consider if you spend lots of time in a room without great ventilation.
Another quick little update to Wasat, bumping the version to v1.8.0. This version is in support of some work I'm about to do on Rogallo: Titan support. This release adds TitanURI and makes a number of changes to handle such URIs alongside GeminiURI. A lucky side-effect is that a problem was uncovered and corrected...
♠ Previously. Problem statement: a plain lyrics sheet does not say who sings what. In a choir rehearsal one has to annotate every line by hand: sopranos here, everybody on the refrain. Two files, one helper, no music engraving: % ls AGENTS.md main.pdf main.typ template.typ template.typ holds the styling only — page,...
I avoid giving stage time to weird people (in the bad sense) here at the Manual. I’m making an exception to link to a July post by DHH, the Danish co-founder of 37Signals (the company behind Basecamp), creator of Omarchy, and author of a blog full of wrong ideas about immigrants and non-white people. He became the...
The best thing that happened this week Since I made CalAction free to use the number of daily downloads has tripled which just goes to show that 1. there's demand for an app like this and 2. that people actively despise the in-app purchase label. I'll be honest and say that I was not expecting this increase in...
Why do so many calendar apps offer Sunday as the first day of the week? It's not the first day of the week, it's the last. Why is that even an option FFS? Thanks for reading this post via RSS. RSS is ace, and so are you. ❤️ You can reply to this post by email, or leave a comment.
Another month has passed and my monthly review is a bit late this time. Why? We’ll get to that in a moment. First, let’s take a look back at August. At the beginning of the month, we enjoyed our last day in South Tyrol and then started the long journey back. We were stuck in a traffic jam for 1.5 hours on the...
66 Million Years BC: the Chicxulub meteor misses Earth. It does not trigger a climate-destabilising dust cloud, and the extremity of subsequent ice ages is therefore blunted. The era’s megafauna migrate, survive and evolve, while new animals—such as primates—emerge.Last moon I was declared a man. Tonight is my...
Over the past month of August, I’ve collected 13 links for my link journal. 2026-08-01 Cheatsheets for flex, grid, anchor positioning and invoker commands polypane.app CSS For CSS Day this year we created a set of cheatsheets explaining Flexbox, Grid, Anchor positioning and Invoker commands. They came out...
But surely they can’t be more than forty years? Anyway, when I was like fifteen, I cracked a bunch of Commodore 64 games. Games came on tapes, and they usually had some sort of turbo loader thing. Most of the turbo loaders were straightforward, but some were heavily obfuscated as a form of copy protection. So my...
I write this on naff all sleep and I am probably going to put something on my freelance Instagram like I always do a bit later, but it was eight years and one day since I pushed live “If not now, when?“, which I shared to a few friends and socials from Frankfurt airport. The day after was the first day of being a...
With this many crisps, it can only be an Album Club. August has been a strange month to work through. The office has been quieter than usual as people have been off for their summer holidays. Unintuitively, the emptier the office is, the harder it is to concentrate, as your ears tune in to individual conversations....
When Tony Stark’s world is torn apart by a formidable terrorist called the Mandarin, he starts an odyssey of rebuilding and retribution. Great third installment in the series, and n-th movie in the MCU, with great performances all over, especially from Sir Ben Kingsley. Six popcorns and it goes into the movie vault....
These are my minimalist themes. They use few colours and will appear mostly monochromatic in many contexts. Styles involve the careful use of typography, such as italics and bold italics. If you want maximalist themes in terms of colour, check my ef-themes package. For something in-between, which I would consider...
“All things are so very uncertain, and that’s exactly what makes me feel reassured,” one of the Moomins observes in Tove Jansson’s masterwork of philosophy disguised as a children’s book. It takes a great spaciousness and sobriety of spirit to be vitalized rather than paralyzed by uncertainty. Most of the time, we...
