Chat GPT and Claude continue to drive down my blog traffic. How-to posts and technical coding posts have been on a downward slope since Gen AI has gotten more popular.
Oh no. I should not have seen those “day live-blogs in timeline format” posts today. Like this and this. Very nerd-snipy, now I want to play with a format like that as well.(Old-school readers might know that I used to have something like that a few years back, showing the aggregated posts from my blog, microblogs...
Version 31.1 of Emacs was just released. I decided to use this 31.1 release as an excuse to clear out the config cobwebs and start over. Restarting a big config isn't something I want to do all the time, but I wanted to try and make emacs more comfortable to use, and address some difficulties I was having with...
img { display: inline-block; } rose I met Suliman! I'm having a good time playing FFXIV; made it to Heavensward now, excited to play more. My wife gifted me the new Hello Kitty Island Adventure DLC (Tea Garden) and it's been very sweet and calming :) We had a great date day on which we tried out a vegan kebab we had...
Film Brand New Landscape by Yuiga Danzuka. Ren works as a delivery driver for moth orchids — a common gift for business openings in Japan. Since the loss of his mother to suicide, he’s been estranged from his father, a world-renowned landscape designer. During a routine delivery, he unexpectedly comes face to face...
Today's entries are more 'yes and' of existing stuff but that's ok! When I started writing yesterday's blog post I had planned on doing about 6 but as I got through the first three and looked at the clock I realized breaking it up into two posts was for the best, so here we go. Oh and I should note: nothing in today...
The clubhouse, once a sportsman’s retreat with a skylit staircase and a rotunda that hosted annual dinners and dances, sits like an empty shell. The second-floor balcony, from which members and guests watched the Regattas and aquatic shows, looks like a ghost of the Gilded Age—overshadowed by the stately apartment...
2026-08-30Hello!When I looked around the internet for street photography, I came across some award-winning images that were monochrome. So I know monochrome can look good, I just don't have the skills to make it shine. I'm hoping that this week of experimenting will help.I'm also going to be following a suggestion...
There’s a widespread belief that artificial superintelligence (ASI) is inevitable. In this post, I argue that this is false, and believing it is upstream of a lot of bad discourse. Why do people believe it? It’s easy to believe. Samuel Butler, already in 1863, observed that machines are improving faster than humans...
This post is also available over on get-arpa-domain.0.4.1.0.9.0.f.1.0.7.4.0.1.0.0.2.ip6.arpa! On the internet, .arpa is the top level domain reserved for critical internet infrastructure. It isn't open to public registration, so you can't own mysite.arpa sadly. However, this isn't the only way to reserve some...
It was a good month for me. Very productive, slower than usual. When the rest of the world races, folks go faster, produce more than ever with all these modern tools, I find more joy in doing precisely the opposite. My friend inspired me to re-watch a decades-old conference talk about programming, and surprisingly I...
A couple of weeks ago I bought an old Walkman, because I felt like listening to some tapes again; something that I hadn't done in at least 25 years. This set me on a path to look a bit more into old Hi-Fi equipment. Not old as in from the 70s and 80s, but older than what we have today, which is essentially just...

Many of you know how much I love the Walter Martin Radio Hour. I’ve been listening (and subscribing) to it almost since the beginning, and it’s been a constant source of pleasure and indeed joy for me. His enthusiasm is certainly contagious, but the greatest value here is the depth of his musical knowledge and the...
By: Iain M. Banks | Rating: 5/5At the start I was a bit sceptical about the whole game theme, but the novel quickly became a very interesting tale of the Culture.

Some photos of people's shadows, taken in Bath in contrasty light. Hi! How are you?
dear creative soul is a series of letters from my creative heart to yours Dear Creative Soul, Have you ever been hit by a swarm of gnats on a warm summer day? If you have, you know they buzz around your head in great numbers, and all you can think of is, “I need to get away from them as soon as humanly possible!”...
Dear reader,If you have been reading my blog for a while, you may have noticed my distaste for AI. Unlike many people, I don’t view it as “just a tool” or a neutral piece of technology. I see its harms surpassing its benefits. So when I discovered the extent to which Pagecord, my blogging platform of choice, is being...
Looking back through life with objects as anchors for memoryI remember the bookshelves we had growing up. They were six-feet-tall and quite wide. The top halves had shelves in them, and I always picture them full of books. The bottom half had drawers, full of more books. They were finished in a dark wood veneer that...
Carl's Doomsday ScenarioAuthor: Matt DinnimanGenre: Fantasy, Sci-fiReleased: 2021Rating: ★★★★★"The training levels have concluded. Now the games may truly begin." The ratings and views are off the chart. The fans just can't get enough. The dungeon gets more dangerous each day. But in a grinder designed to chew up...

I’ve been tidying up various cupboards, drawers and boxes, and look what I found? I mean, I knew that I’d had a few phones over the years, but… And what do you do with old phones, anyway? I put the old one in a drawer and think “I’ll keep that one as a backup in case my new phone breaks down”, and then… it stays...
I've followed and engaged in politics for about 8 years now, on and off. A lot of what we see on the news feels way too big to make any difference, and often it feels like no matter what effort goes in, we're just kind of crossing our fingers & hoping the right powerful people win - sometimes they do, and sometimes...
August 2026. Wombwell. Greater Barnsley. “You’re weird” says Mrs RM, which I’m taking as a compliment. A week after that foreign holiday in Wales, I’d barely left Sheffield. At Dad’s care home this afternoon, the lovely staff note my absence from Waterbeach for a couple of weeks* and I feel guilty. By Thursday, my...

Our final day of the bike trip took us across two states, and ended with mild disappointment. In retrospect, we'll call the Late Summer VT Bikepacking a success, but the Later Summer NH Rail Trail Riding an abject failure. Our final day of riding began around 7, despite our early bedtime. We rose to a crisp 50ish...
Mood: Ferociously hopeful, buzzing like a perfectly tuned bass string. Come. Sit. Take a walk with me as I imagine the world I wish to live in. The rhythmic, oscillating thrum of rotors shears through the humid air. The scent of hot yeast and melted cheese arrives from the sky. I position myself on the porch. I...
♠ Previously. I added a TV shows page with a sample of my favorites, inspired by Michael Harley’s watching page and Michael Stapelberg’s series page. The list lives in YAML. Trakt keeps my full watch history; this file stays small, alphabetical, and intentionally incomplete: shows: # keep-sorted start case=no...
Creating covers for ebooks, editing books, building apps ... It used to cost thousands to do this, but AI is making these services affordable. For creatives (those who do this as a hobby or for work), this opens up a so many exciting possibilities.
I spent the day playing Skyrim. I made it through the Dawnguard quests with Serana "helping" along the way. A vampire princess who is hundreds of years old can't one shot a random bandit but the rat hermit who has been living off skeevers in a cave for six months nearly kills us both. I love this game. When I add...
24th August - 30th August The combination of a giant honey-coloured moon and distant light pollution reflecting off the sparse cloud cover means, even without streetlights, it's just about light enough to walk at night without a torch. An electrical storm fakes midday in half second bursts while divine chariots...
A weekly recap of the articles and posts I’ve read that I think are worth your time. Re-fueling while cycling made all the difference — After-hours engineering — A good lesson if you are getting into cycling as a hobby-ist. However I do have questions. What’s so bad about gels etc? And why does someone write a post...
On my birthday, I wanted to take a moment and just say all the things I'm grateful for. I'm grateful for Rachelle and our life together. I know that's a big one and kind of cheesy, but it's true. I normally can only recognize good periods in my life when looking back, but I think when I look back, this will probably...

0:0 Before yesterday’s home match, I was already a bit worried, as Essen had knocked out second-division team St. Pauli in the DFB-Pokal at the weekend, whereas we, as everyone knows, lost 0:4 to Leverkusen. Either a win like that gives a team a boost, or they’ll be too tired for their next league match. The last...
Kosmo - Arizona, 2020 When the weather cooperates, I enjoy a morning on the patio, reading or writing. We had a little West Highland Terrier, Kosmo, who never missed the opportunity to be outdoors. I would enjoy coffee and cool weather. Kosmo would patrol the yard and bask in the sun. We also shared a doughnut. I...
I don’t think anyone particularly enjoys typesetting in monospace. Regular text is okay – at least as okay as it can be: Right aligning is also fine, as long as you don’t mind counting spaces, but centering already gets tricky, as you don’t have a half space to make things truly even: And full justification is where...
There was a draft, a detailed version of the week. The week did not go as designed. My mind feels the weight of having no focus, scattered words, learning, thoughts, ideas; scattered brings no peace. I type this, a entirely different version from what I intended; my daughter home due to stomach flu — she is...
Here’s some stuff I’ve experienced lately (and not necessarily only new releases)...
You really, really don’t need a new app for this I’ve been tracking my loose-to-no-deadline tasks in a Forster list for over a month now. This list lives in an A6 squared notebook that goes with me (almost) everywhere. It’s been a wonderful experience, giving me a great balance between structure and freedom during...
A quick little update to Wasat, bumping the version to v1.7.0. In service of a feature I'm adding to Rogallo, I've added a forget method to the trust store class, so that a certificate fingerprint for a particular host/port combination can be forgotten. This came about because, if a fingerprint does change for a...
Public domain photograph of Dolly Parton in 1970 via RCA Records and Wikimedia Commons. Look, I know a solid portion of the planet has been sharing their love of Dolly Parton, but damn it, in this instance, it’s the right thing to do. When a bedrock of true humanity is taken out of a world that seems ever less...
Sunday Morning Birding at Dorey Park Slow morning - only 14 species. The highlight was a Great Blue flying into the pond right over our heads as we were finishing up.
Today is BlogDay, a celebration of blogging and also the end to Blaugust, a challenge to write 31 posts in the month of August. I did not participate in Blaugust myself, but I have enjoyed reading people’s posts. In particular Thomas Vander Wal’s posts were a fun display of both technical and literary skill. But I...
The articles that made it into the latest edition of Philosophers Annual have been announced. The list aims to “select the ten best articles published in philosophy each year—an attempt as simple to state as it is admittedly impossible to fulfill.” This volume—the 45th—covers the literature from 2024. The selections...

So Google has put their tongue to the Presidential boot once more, and renamed "Lake Ontario" to "Lake America" (joining their previous bullshit of renaming the "Gulf of Mexico" to the "Gulf of America"). Yes, names on a map are really just some collectively arbitrary kind of thing that really don't matter all that...
How has your life changed since the emergence of AI? Life before AI You couldn’t draw. You couldn’t write. You couldn’t code. But you were happy with your life; you laughed and joked, and you got by. Life after AI You still can’t draw You still can’t write. And, guess what, you still can’t code. Now you’re not so...
A Shepherds Hut was in an auction In 2021 I read an online article online in a daily newspaper where a sheep farmer had been outbid at an auction for an old Shepherds Hut by someone from London. The point of the article was a moral outrage thought piece complaining that a townie was able to outbid someone for an old...
Posting LLM generated writing is an afront to the intelligence of everyone that you want to read it, and a direct insult to humanity as a whole. The time to mince words about this is long gone. I saw a piece of writing on Hackernews the other day that was obviously LLM generated, and I had a bit of a crashout. I...
I like a nice cloud. This is at the abandoned but well-grazed WW2 airfield at Davidstow, Cornwall, where the sky is massive. Often you can't see anything because the sky comes right down to the ground as mist, but not today.
I never understood why most bookstores in Berlin (and perhaps in Germany) don't sell magazines. I'm writing a new article right now about magazines and how they shaped my life in the last year. While writing it, I realised that for magazines I often go to stores other than bookstores. Weird. Reply via email | Reply...
With Casey visiting family I’m left to my own devices and a backlog of movies he needn’t suffer through. First on the list was Life Itself, a sprawling melodrama from the writer behind Cars, Crazy, Stupid, Love and This Is Us. It’s messy, but the star studded cast tries to honor the intention of it all quite...
That’s Mine, by Hobart based Australian author Adam Ouston (Instagram page), which features one incredibly, outrageously, long sentence of perhaps eighty-five thousand words. No full-stops, chapters, or even a few lines of space to break up the text it seems. I can’t find an official word count for the novel, so...
This ebook by Daina Chiba is an excellent, thorough resource for learning Riichi mahjong. It’s hard to find such good material in English. You need a pretty strong understanding of the fundamentals to follow along with many of the sections, so this will probably become something that I revisit many times as I...
Heya! So, a while ago, in this post, i talked about some random quotes which you can view in the random quotes widget on my other website. So, since I have nothing better to do, I might as well share some more of my favorite that I've collected over the years. So... Here are some more quotes, along with some context...
Where did it all go? Every ounce of feeling from my fingertips and toes. The darkness makes room for the twinkle to star. I look up, my smile cast away. Mage, to you, I'm the muse.
In 1896, decades before Santiago Ramón y Cajal pioneered neuroscience, more than a century before Oliver Sacks showed us how perception phosphoresces in the 100 milliseconds between the world and us, half a lifetime before he was awarded the Nobel Prize, the polymathic French philosopher Henri Bergson (October 18,...
Rationale-“I tried asking an LLM to help me with this database task and all I got back was outdated and wrong answers”-“The LLM said it had written the code but when I tried it it had just skipped parts of it and completely misunderstood others”-“I'm not saving any time when I have to sit and copy paste results and...
Everything I shared on social.omgmog.net between 24 and 30 August: a website that turns anything you hit into a bell, a word game designed to give you a headache, and flying toasters back on the desktop.
