Roshan: [[File:{{#setmainimage:Citation Laundering - An Example Flowchart.png}}|thumb|An example of how you might do this]] [[Citation Laundering]] is the practice of taking a low-likelihood statement and citing it through an increasingly more reliable chain of sources until the claim looks like it is reliably...
Reddit is now requiring you to have an account and be logged in to use old.reddit.com, the less cluttered and bloated desktop website. Ars Technica has a great article with a breakdown of Reddit's reasoning behind this, but essentially they claim they're worried about scrapers accessing content without paying for it...
An argument, three failures, and what the failures leave The conclusion at the end of this shouldn’t be accepted on its own. Stated flat, it sounds like a shrug: whether a preference is really yours is not a question you can answer, and the harder it presses the less answerable it gets. Said cold, that reads as...

“I love her happiness more than my own.” Fyodor Dostoyevsky (November 11, 1821–February 9, 1881) was twenty-seven when he was arrested for belonging to a literary society deemed dangerous by the tsarist regime and sentenced to death. His sentence was repealed at the last moment, prompting him to pen an ecstatic...
I sure wish I could commit to writing with pen and paper. There are very compelling arguments for why one should write by hand. It’s good for your brain! Science proves it! I’ve been in meetings with people who enter the room with a pen and notebook. They seem so much more attentive and engaged than the people...
Around the time I was writing about iPhone’s Safari breaking the expected “tap to jump to the top” gesture, a conversation on social media pointed to yet another thing that this tab control does strangely. A typical use of Safari means two groups of sites: a regular set on the right, and “private” pages on the left...
When I focus on my words I take care with them, I choose them deliberately, sometimes to soften things, sometimes to provoke, but it’s rarely by accident. Since I started being a bit more considered with the things I posted here, in particular the longer Musings, it’s been part of the joy of writing. Trying to...
I returned from a lovely summer vacation (family, beach) to find that iOS 27 beta has fucked up the transition between split view and compact — I’ve got a boatload of crashes, mostly on Pro Max devices and a few on iPad. Here’s a representative crash log. The feedback in TestFlight all talks about rotating the...
Hello, my name's Chris and I go to concerts all the time, but not as much as my friend Zan.Reply via email
I’m almost fourteen years old when the ghost wakes me for the second night in a row.A cold breath at my chin, a lapping of something that should be wet, leaving my skin hollow. I swat it, but the licking persists, my fingers finding soggy poundcake crumbs left on my chin from the slice I stole after my parents went...
Once a lone bounty hunter, Mandalorian Din Djarin and his apprentice Grogu embark on an exciting new Star Wars adventure. Astonishing visuals, good music, some slow pacing, but in the end it’s a Star Wars title and it’s done pretty well. Five popcorns, this was pretty fun to watch. To see all 30 photos, visit the...
Hacker News is a popular news aggregator and web forum created and run by United States-based venture capital firm Y Combinator. The site officially launched on the 20th of February 2007 as ‘Startup News’. The idea of the site was for potential founders to establish themselves and become known to Y Combinator before...
I wrote recently about Hexagonal Architecture, alternatively known as Ports & Adapters, in Book Overflow and two architectural patterns in CAP. The core idea is based on having a deliberately agnostic approach to mechanisms, resources and services beyond - located in the outer concentric circles, as it were - a...
I'm still writing my journals on paper. Makes it about a decade of notebooks, most of them Field Notes, kept in the archival wooden boxes[1]. Writing by hand helps me remember and process life. Finishing notebooks give me the feeling of closing a chapter on those problems, at least for a moment.Paper notebooks are...
Nebuchadnezzar has been using YunoHost for at least half a decade. I am immensely grateful to this software and its maintainers, most importantly because I respect their work, they are politically positioned, and they are very much aligned with the kind of critical perspective I wish all Free Software maintainers...
It was really great to be back on the lake in New Hampshire with family. Other than some smoke, the weather was great. The green trees were a welcome contrast to California dry sumer. We swam, kayaked to the island, picked blueberries, played chess, ate ice cream, and slept in. When I wasn’t busy hanging out with my...
Money helped unify trading and debt. Why don't we step back and pay with actual debt itself when we have these brilliant business machines in our pockets.
Another Backend Heavy DayI updated almost all the Apache ECharts and Hugo code that generates my favourite page on BurgeonLab: the /stats page. With the new post types I’ve added recently: books, replies (separated out from notes), and RSVPs; I noticed some of the data on the graphs being incorrect. New Features...
Your RSS Reader Is Robbing Youby Antonio SantosAntonio opines that by using RSS feeds instead of visiting people's sites, we're robbing ourselves of enjoying the design many site owners have put a lot of work into.Read post ➡ On the other side of the argument is this post by Christian Cleberg where he argues that...
Even though the waves were messy today, it was still a great day to get into the water. The dolphins were surfing, too!
I have spent the past several mornings taking 10+ mile bike trips on sections of the local bike trail. Some fragments. everything you need to know about the family tov: a play in one scene One morning, I decided to do the part of the trail that would deposit me at the family homestead (part of which backs up to the...
futurefonts.com FC Lead is using the constraints of merging pieces of glass together with lead into one solid drawing. Counterparts are created with light without any unnecessary cuts. Resulting in unconventional letters.🤯I have one word... woah... this is both magical and beautiful. Insta-buy.
What Collins does impeccably is plainly state the magical element: some people can extract memories from people and store them in books. There's no real history or explanation for how or why — it's simply a universal truth and unexamined. The book is split into three acts, all written in first person. Emmett, our...
Decided to write an update regarding everything gaming related in my life, as of now in Summer of 2026! What games have I played? What games have I purchased? What games have I beaten? Everything you may want to know about my gaming habits as of now! Remember back in May when I chose to participate in the Summer...
Saw this on HN this morning: Em dashes are fucking amazing. Excerpt: I don’t give a shit what the “oh yeah let’s examine this piece of writing with a magnifying glass for any signs of AI” crowd thinks. I don’t give a shit that AI figured out how to produce em dashes before these online troglodytes did. Typing em...
July 2026. Newton Aycliffe. Durham. I was staying overnight in a grim car park in Darlington as I didn’t fancy paying the outrageous hotel prices that kick in during the English summer. That £1,492 a night wellness retreat is walking distance from my next pub in Newton Aycliffe. To be fair, you do get a hot tub. A...
I collect cool, interesting links spread all over the web and share them here every Thursday. Hope you enjoy! More of them in the archive. The Sites We Lost. An archive of sites that used to be part of The Useless Web and have since gone offline. clipart.studio. Make collages with paper magazines, except digitally....
A "program", "community", or "collection", and then the human can download a real badge, that says that the works are made by humans! Case is making the case against them. Kai is inviting you to sign up.
2026-07-23Hello! Today, I'm determined to write a short article, for real this time. Here's a weird plant. I don't know what it is, but basic internet research tells me it's some sort of thistle plant, like a dandelion.I didn't touch it — I kept my distance, thank you very much. If I can inhale mushroom spores...
I was of three minds, Like a tree In which there are three blackbirds. [from Wallace Stevens, Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird] The literature on superintelligence and AI alignment tends to assume that an intelligent AI will have one set of values, one reward function, and consistent, determinate preferences....
All four of my grandparents lived into my adulthood. For most of my childhood, they were close enough that we could visit them often. Even though my parents split up the year I started school, my mom stayed close to my dad's family, so that was never an issue. As a child, I thought my grandparents were perfect. And...
I noticed today that the Cubs and Yankees have the same record. I knew that the Cubs have had some extreme ups and downs this year, but I wasn’t sure if the Yankees had, so I decided to plot their progress over the course of the season so far. A plot of how far above or below .500 they were seemed like the best way...
As a young boy I would lie in bed and simply stare at the ceiling. My focus would shift from one pattern to another, but my mind would wander. There was nothing I needed to do, so this was my exact (yet never defined) goal: nothing. I found that state again. I am writing a draft of this text sitting in the beautiful...
Austin’s favorite justice and joy rock trio, Parker Woodland, is back with their new EP, Police On My Back: Singles Collection Vol. 1, available July 24, 2026 on Flak Records. The album is available as a digital download on Bandcamp with sales of the single “Police on My Back” benefiting the Texas Civil Rights...

Check out As in guillotine... for more. What have I been upto? Work has gotten a bit quieter since the last time I wrote. Managed to get back on top of the mountain and one of the builds had gone live, which was nice. I’ve got a few things to chase up, and sort, but with just over 24 hours before I go on holiday (more on that later), I think that I leave...
OK, so again a month has passed between Weeknotes. This time I’ve been spending time moving my site because, hey, it’s been a couple of years and what’s laze.net without a periodic server move? I wrote a bit about it on the site already, but I thought I’d comment a little more about the process here. Since I was...
Preliminary remark: This post is not a "book review" in the strict sense. It's not my aim to rate how "good" or "bad" it is from an analytical standpoint. I'm merely collecting some thoughts here. Some of them might be review-like, others not so much. This is the first English book that I've read in a few months,...
The Amiga turns 40 this week. I had an Amiga 500 as a kid, some time in the early 90s. And I remember being made fun of for having an Amiga, because PCs were supposedly so much cooler and better and whatnot. But the first time I visited a friend who had one of those amazing PCs and he proudly showed me his games...
The Laughing Heart your life is your life don't let it be clubbed into dank submission. be on the watch. there are ways out. there is a light somewhere. it may not be much light but it beats the darkness. be on the watch. the gods will offer you chances. know them. take them. you can't beat death but you can beat...
I honestly don't remember where I got this notepad from. I like it though.
A quick update to Port79. When I kicked this off I'd set up the FingerURI class so that it was pretty permissive in what it would accept. So, for example, you could do any of: >>> FingerURI("davep") FingerURI('finger://davep/') >>> FingerURI("davep@example.com") FingerURI('finger://example.com/davep') >>>...
As for Fall 2027, incoming students at the University of Wyoming will no longer be allowed to major in philosophy. The news was shared by philosophy professor Bradley Rettler in posts on social media. He says that students will be able to major in “philosophy and religion” but not “philosophy” nor “religious...
In Argentina we like to tell this urban legend that is somehow kind-of-true, that the ballpoint pen was invented there, thanks to the idea of a Hungarian-born man called László Bíró who moved to Argentina at some point during World War II. This story is not entirely true in the sense that when Bíró came to Argentina...

They left your rings on. Did you know that? I don't know how long you've been here, but however long it's been, they've left your fingers alone. I saw it. Don't worry. I didn't touch them. Today we did the anterior upper limb, so all of you were face up, with your muscles and your blood vessels and your nerves all...
This is a slightly shortened cross-post of a blog post which I co-authored with Otto Richter and William Zijl for the Codeberg blog. While some of the specifics of that post might mostly be relevant to Codeberg in particular, the ‘meat’ of the argument felt general enough to warrant being preserved and archived via...
Part 6 of the Power User and Small Team track in my CybersecKyle Security How-To Series is a travel routine for the laptop and phone that leave the controlled environment built in the previous guides.A normal trip changes which failures are likely. A laptop can be left in a vehicle or hotel room. A phone becomes the...
