It is by no means the gravest linguistic crime of the React epoch,1 but "state management" grates like nails on chalkboard. A Socratic dialogue I keep having about it goes something like this: me: This UI is far too heavyweight for what it does, have you considered not using React? them: But how will we do state...
So Substack just dropped an unwanted feature on us: âGoing forward, youâll be able to scan text to see how much of it was likely written by hand or with AI assistance,â says Chris Best in Against Claudefishing. Well thanks, Chris. Didnât realise I needed to be harassed even moar by anti-AI trolls. Trolls, whom, I...
A arte do Kudo Naoya Ă© impecĂĄvel!
2026-07-22Hello! I keep hoping I'll write a short article, and then it balloons in word count.I photographed the car's front grille and the Mazda logo. It's dark and monochrome, as most of my recent images seem to be.While I don't think anything can beat the interior detail photography of the Porsche model car, this...
An incomplete list: Educate yourself on whatâs going on. If you donât know whatâs going on, donât opine about it. Sign petitions. Share petitions, and talk about why those petitions are important. Look up local communities working on the things you valueâeducation, climate, poverty, homophobia, caste discrimination,...
Itâs gray out today, slightly humid, but thankfully this has been a cooler week than the last. I am not a fan of heat, the sticky kind especially. Unfortunately I live in a world where itâs only going to keep getting hotter, because capitalism, so thatâs fun. Fun for all of us, of course, not just me, but ya know....
Alex over at The Wry Writer started Five Ws of Reading. It was brought to my attention by David, who found it through Frances Crossley who got it from the fabulously named Explicating Elle. WHO - An author you would love to have a âone to oneâ with? Although I'd like feel a right idiot, I'd love to have a chat with...
Problem statement: mid-task, I want to ask the LLM agent a quick tangential question â âwill this change cause downtime?â â without polluting the main agent thread. Claude Code has /btw1 for exactly this. pi doesnât, but patriceckhart/pi-btw does, as an extension. It opens a side-chat overlay: the LLM...

Hace...
For 6 years or so, I have been down the custom, split, ergonomic keyboard rabbit hole. And, since running a few different boards, I have found what I like and dislike in a board - to the point that it sounded like a good idea to build one that ticked all the boxes of preferences - 34 keys, MX switches, wired (more...
Replied to AI-generated blog post images are not cool any more by Panagiotis Vryonis (blog.vrypan.net) But AI-generated images in blog posts are no longer cool. Everyone does it. And with the exception when an image is a really good fit, it looks like a 2000 PowerPoint using animated transitions and WordArt. I read...
Some links donât call for a full blog post, but sometimes I still want to share the good stuff I encounter on the web, in a short, quick format that fits with my schedule of raising a baby, summer activities, and a few ludicrous displays to watch. ⧠Things I would like to tell my 10 year old self (Winnie Lim) â...
Waiting for the start of Glengarry Glen Ross at The Old Vic theatre, 13 July 2026 A really big week. We spent the first three days on a management team offsite. It was bittersweet, as it was the last one we will have with someone in our team who is retiring later this year. We hadnât been all together in the same...
The âSouthern heroâ Zhan Zhao is carrying vital evidence from an old friend about an unsolved case, intent on delivering it safely to the capital. But his foes are equally driven to stop him. Fortunately, he meets Huo Ling Long, the daughter of Linglong Villa, and Bai Yu Tang, an eccentric wandering hero nicknamed...
Remember when I mentioned I was using my Kindle as a personal newspaper? And that this solution was ideal because I didnât need to buy another gadget? I still stand by that, but I bought another gadget to be my âpersonal newspaperâ: a Boox Go 10.3 (Gen II) Lumi tablet. (Phew! From here on, Iâll just call it the Boox...
I just came across the Done by Humans âmovement,â which appears to similar to not by AI: both offer badges to display proudly on your human-made website after some kind of vetting process. I donât understand the appeal of sites like these or what they offer, and I think itâs possible they represent a new way to...
I've just noticed that I have now exceeded 5,000 posts on this blog â Butterflies, Proms, Ibsen was number 5,000. I would never have seen that coming when I tentatively launched this Hedonic Resource on the world back in 2008. Anyway, I reckon it's time for a poem, so here's a gem by Richard Wilbur. In the...
I signed into the NYTimes.com cooking site and without me clicking anything got signed up for three of their cooking email newsletters.
July 2026. Hope Town. Darlington. A fifth night parked up in a campervan in the suburbs of Darlington in a year; Cockerton Parish Council are probably debating me now. Cockerton, where W. Alderson & Sonâs baps had so enraptured me last summer. All the best stuff was gone just after noon on a busy Saturday, so I had...
Read on the website: I have decided to go low-tech with my life lately. Hereâs the low-tech know-how I use.
The other day I found a lecture teaching how to identify and name clouds, it's was perfect timing because I've been meaning to learn about this, so I watched it and it wasn't difficult at all! the names looked hard but what surprised me is that, generally, there are just three types of clouds in this naming method....
Thomas E. Hill, Jr., professor emeritus of philosophy at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, has died. Professor Hill was well-known for his work in ethics, the history of ethics, and political philosophy, and especially for his scholarship on Kantian moral and political philosophy. He is the author of...
Now, July 2026: Web Writers' Collective & Fountain pens Web Writersâ Collective I was invited to join the new Web Writers' Collective and itâs such a joy to feel part of a writing community! Iâve been lurking a bit more lately (now that the group is growing), but Iâm enjoying the discussions so far. Honestly, Iâm...
Summer is the season of insects. Earlier this year, I saw fireflies for the first time in my life. Now, the cicadas are beginning to sing (or scream, depending on your stance towards them). Lately, I've been feeling the strange urge to go bug catching. It's a classic Japanese summer vacation activity, mostly enjoyed...
The day after the last failed attempt to install fibre, I got a follow-up message from Openreach, pretty much not telling me anything I didn't already know: We came to see if we can connect your property to our Full Fibre network yesterday. The good news is we can, but the engineer found that the existing network...
A hill I will die on: there's a right way and a wrong way to play 'Mary Had A Little Lamb'.
not dead, life has been chaotic lately but i'm working on posting something detailing where i've been for the past couple of months. peace and love <3
Something Iâve been meaning to write about more on this blog is specific gaming experiences. Not necessarily reviews, but just moments of my history with gaming that got me to think about things and reflect a bit. Memories from my childhood, quotes, a cutscene or mechanic I loved. Ten years after beating it for the...
Edie just likes chewing off the leaves of the catnip plant but that's as far as her interest goes. Currently Listening: Noah Kahan âThe Great DivideâReply via email
Grab the slider and go on an adventure with me It's weird that I only have one other photo of this stick on the blog. I must have tagged some of them wrong?? This thing is trapped in a power line that I see when I go on walks and I love photographing it. It's been there as long as I've lived here and looks like the...
#julyreply Michael Harley prefers to read books on an e-reader, and makes sure he truly owns them by stripping off the DRM if possible. » I own my books This is not a problem for me because I mostly borrow books from the library with an app called Libby. The library system where I live has a great selection. If a...
Coleman Spilde, writing for Salon: Since its expansion from movie rentals and streaming into original content, Netflix has made it clear that its sole priority is Netflix, not its customers, and certainly not the art of visual media. This is an empathy exercise, but donât worry: youâre gonna get to hate someone along the way if you want to. Or if you love them, thatâs okay too. The exercise doesnât hinge on your hatred of them. Okay, so bring to mind someone you really had a problem with in the past. A school bully or something. Letâs add some...
