Weird technology mistakes: on Saturday I just wanted to add one of our family gatherings to my calendar on the iPhone. I typed “Family gathering” and the phone helpfully used all the information from an old family gathering, (2019!) copied them into the new entry – and then sent out an invitation everyone who was...
Celebrated Meredith's second youth making Strawberry Gin & Tonic Ice Cream from scratch.Currently Listening: Washed Out “Feel It All Around”Reply via email
We were made for something greater Than the greatness for which we’re grasping, Than puny powers for which we’re reaching, Than weak lights to which we’re aspiring. God created man for knowing, Walking in his blessed presence, Living in his sweet communion. We pursue the shiny tinsel.
I quit RSS. Kind of. A month ago, I read an article from someone who had quit RSS and gone back to visiting blogs one by one. It stuck with me. A little poking around revealed that the old Live Bookmarks feature of Netscape/Mozilla/Firefox lives on as an extension. I imported my feeds into the LiveMarks extension....
July 21, 2026 I've been thinking about this a lot lately: security and privacy are often discussed as if they're the same thing, or at least on the same team. They're not. They represent two distinct concerns, and I've come to believe one must be addressed before the other. Any computer — desktop, laptop, tablet,...
The indispensable Michael Tsai has an interesting post up today about Apple Park and whether its design isolates the people who work there, despite its having been designed—in part, at least—to encourage collaboration. As usual, Michael has collected a group of choice quotes on the topic. I won’t link to any of...
When I finished my last exam in December 2024 with my Electrical, Computer Engineering Degree I started work at AMEC in January 2005 in the building that used to be right here. It was short lived, the office moved less than a year later to the Bayer's Rd Mall, and later to Burnside where they are today. 1 At the...
July 2026. Sheffield. Foiled in my search for a can of tomato gose (though the Neptune Black Cherry Oatmeal Stout at Hop Hideout was superb), I took the tram back towards RM Towers, wondering if I should make a rare stop at the Welly. At that precise moment, the tram ground to a halt at Shalesmoor (bus blocking the...
Honestly, I truly thought crazy exes only existed in Hollywood and sad breakup songs, well, as a part of amy tries life, Amy Tries Exes! I like peace a lot.
I came across orchids’ post sharing their conflicted feelings on whether or not “No AI” statements are genuinely necessary, helpful and/or useful. In their post, orchids argues that the onus is on the viewer/reader to distinguish human-created content from AI-generated one; it can be an indication of questionable...
Part 5 of the Power User and Small Team track in my CybersecKyle Security How-To Series turns the accounts, devices, and self-hosted services from the earlier guides into a small monitoring routine. The fastest way to make home security logging useless is to collect everything first and decide why later. A dashboard...
When you act, strange things happen. Yesterday I wrote Religion and theology in light of the Greek gods and now I have the chance to meet relevant people. This Sunday I will join a group of Greek polytheists (ethnic Greek religion) from Cyprus in a rite related to Dioskouri at a temple overlooking the sea. My...
This post contains mentions of sex and suicidal ideation. My other selves are not the problem. The problem is The Not Knowing. (Huge caveat: I’m lucky enough to not have daily blackout amnesia but instead lesser daily amnesia between us, and none of us commit crimes behind each other’s backs. Some individuals with...
As a teenager I adored Norton Commander, learned some UI magic from early videogames, and dreamed of a Mac my family couldn’t afford. But I think the first product that taught me something truly memorable in terms of user experience was, of all things, Excel 97. Excel 97 cooked. It was rendered in brand-new,...
This is the companion to I own my books, where I made the case for stripping DRM and actually owning what I buy. This post is the machinery overview: how I store, serve, and read all of it from my own homelab. My books workflow # When I find a book I want to buy, I go to eBooks.com and search for it. They have most...
I don’t know about you, but I read more novels during the summer than any other time of year. I probably can fit in a few more novels before the school year begins. What have you read lately that you like? As for me, two recent fiction reads stand out as being of particular interest to philosophers: The Last Samurai...
Sid Meier’s Memoir! A life in Computer Games By the Creator of Civilization! con ese título se presenta el libro autobiográfico de Sid Meier, uno de los creadores de videojuegos más reconocidos.
The air is thick with dust and the smell of decaying wood pulp. Shelving units like fossilised bones stretch beyond the limits of sight. Waterproof dust jackets protect ancient volumes from the desultory clouds which form among the upper shelves. At ground level, strobe-light-lurid mushrooms spill out from cracks...
The kitchen light was the only one on in the house, and Cole was already under it when Russ came down. Six birds on the counter, out of the plastic now, pale and sweating in the trays. Their mother had made this every year for the church supper and God knew how much of it for other people’s funerals, and someone at...
I was studying, like, last night and noticed that I was tired as fuck during the process of writing a few queries while watching a video explanation on how to use the best parameters in a database. Yeah, after a day of more than 8 hours of work, 5 different meetings, more than 40 messages sent, and 1 hour of gym...
An intellectually disabled man fights for custody of his 7-year-old daughter and in the process teaches his cold-hearted lawyer the value of love and family. Bit melodramatic, but it works so well. Sean Penn acts masterfully, and Michelle Pfeiffer does grow on you. Good perfomances from Dakota Fanning and Dianne...
A week in Franconian Switzerland—castles, caves, and quiet trails far from the crowds. No alpine climbs, just long, green hikes through lush forests and moss-lined valleys. Underrated, peaceful, and full of surprises. Here’s our trip in seven posts (and a few videos). If you love exploring without the tourist rush,...
A year ago I published an article about GoToSocial, a fediverse microblogging software (think of it as an alternative to Mastodon or Sharkey) that I had been using and loving. That is still very much the case, a year and a half after I first started using it:GoToSocial empowers you to have your own home on the...

Roshan: Wikipen Today, [https://openai.com/index/hugging-face-model-evaluation-security-incident/ a GPT-5.x prototype escaped containment on HuggingFace's servers using a 0-day it came up with] which is both phenomenally cool and a little bit scary. In January, I experienced a funny similar case where the agent...
About three weeks ago, a neighbor down the street posted to a local group that she found an orange cat laying on her porch. She’d brought him in for the night, but was looking for his person. The next day, I was outside chatting with my next-door neighbor when a woman drove by asking if we’d seen two loose cats. I...
If a>b>1 and x>1, you can prove that logax<logbx. (As a reminder, logax denotes the value t such that x=at.) This is very intuitive if you think about it: for “normal” numbers, the greater a, the smaller t you will need to get the same x. Yet if you ask PHP what it thinks, it will tell you you’re wrong in a...
it’s writing the weather. Sentences, little vials of style and language, are here to hold a record of the internet’s contact with our body, our attention—its energy, pitch, vibe, vocabulary, tone, and how these qualities inform our own energies, pitches, vibes, vocabularies, tones. (Sentences are an old technology;...
Let’s get to the point. These are the reasons why I was irritated by Chris Nolan’s Odyssey: It’s a cheap attempt at diversity. Hollywood has been giving me the impression that it’s not confident stories from other cultures would be “safe” (i.e., sell). So they decided to adapt a well-known, popular IP and throw in a...
DRY Principle: Hugo Layout TemplatesDRY stands for Don’t Repeat Yourself. Although what I did last night doesn’t affect the frontend / look-and-feel of my site, I am pleased to have done something I have been meaning to do for a long time: clean up the multiple repeated layout templates and Hugo conditional code...
Image by Junior Peres Junior from Pixabay I'm going to do a few articles on dark fantasy, grimdark and otherwise. My Cambion Chronicles series is heading in that direction, and what better way to explore dark fantasy that doing some dives into it? Let's kick this off with one of my favourite writers, Clark Ashton...
2026-07-21Hello! This is another favorite image of mine.Experimenting with different perspectives, I thought that this wooden trunk could look amazing if only I framed it right.I walked by this row of trees several times, and I couldn't figure out how best to capture the wooden texture. I used a few different lenses...
Perception of color, a fascinating idea — evident by last year’s IndieWeb blog carnival theme I hosted. This fascination is seeded by personal need to understand my own perception. I am often questioned about color choice in my art. Most consider them artistic choice. While I do oversaturate the hues, I actually see...
Today at HWC Europe I shared my screen and showed everyone some snippets of this website. I particularly focused on my style page, the gigs layout and the posters layout. Even though the website is staged on a public URL and the source code is available on a public GitHub repo, I don't imagine anybody would have...
Bring back the silly. The quick and easy. The nonsense.Make procrastination a reason. Note: this post is for me, it will bore you, it’s about this blog, which is really only of any interest to me as a whole. Perhaps you are interested in a post here and there, but it’s different for me. This is me. I overthink.I...
While I'm having a moment of calling code stable, I've bumped Wasat to v1.0.0 as well. There's no actual difference here when compared to the last release, other than the development status classifier in the PyPI metadata and the version number. The library feels pretty stable at this point. I've been using Rogallo...
Some of the things I most love doing now, I loved doing as a child. Here is a list of five of them, what are yours?1. Writing poetryI don’t know why I started. I also don’t have those poems anymore, thanks to the awkward almost adult “this is fucking crap!” phase. (if you are a young poet, please listen: if you feel...

There’s been some changes to Marginalia Search: Migrated to systemd from docker New unranked query endpoint Wide domains got their own index for faster crawls In brief, this has removed a lot of operational headaches, reduced expensive queries leaving more computational power for the rest, and cut crawl times in...
With this post, I’ll wrap up my notes from the second Future of Software Development Retreat. But before I do, I should note that the full Thoughtworks report on the retreat is now available. They have five headline findings: Code generation is no longer the bottleneck — verification is. ‘Harness engineering’ is...
Taking Stock as a Skill mtift Tue, 07/21/2026 - 18:36 Marnie and I have been taking stock now that we’re empty nesters. With one kid in college and another in grad school, life is different. We’ve been talking about how to spend our days, how much to travel, and what our next house projects should be. That’s one...
