She left me with a gift of magnetic faces to place on plant leaves. Currently Listening: Phoebe Bridgers “Lost Boys”Reply via email
Dude have I mentioned how much I love doing dishes now As usual, photo completely unrelated; there was a bitchin' sunset the other night and I massively underexposed while trying to get it shining on the cat mansion at the window Welcome back to another JulyReply; I haven't done as many as I'd hoped this month but...
I know the indie blogosphere detests Chrome, but bear with me. Or don’t. 🤷♂️ Safari was buggin’ out on my iPhone one day so I tried using Chrome for a bit. I soon learned that Safari has a big advantage in one of my common workflows. In mobile Safari, when I select text, then use the share action for the current...
I wrote the following while standing on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh, listening to music and watching the world. The joy of closing your eyes and being able to listen to the bagpipes. I look into the distance and see a traffic cone on the head of a statue. I notice how much busier it is than in previous weeks — how a...
Act One They woke her first, the way they always did, because she came up slower and Aaron liked to be awake when she surfaced so hers wasn’t the only face in the room that had missed him too. The waking room was warm. That was the first thing, every time — the warmth, engineered to arrive before consciousness did,...
Today is the feast day of St Christina the Astonishing, a 12th-century saint from Sint-Truiden, in what is now Belgium. Having suffered a massive seizure of some kind, she was taken for dead, but in the midst of her funeral service 'she arose full of vigour, stupefying with amazement the whole city of Sint-Truiden'....
July 24, 2026 Garmin announced this week that it's acquired TrainingPeaks and TrainHeroic. Garmin hasn't said much else. The press release is thin on details, so I've got some thoughts about what this could mean. I started using TrainingPeaks back in 2006, after getting recruited to race on a competitive men's...
Be happy anyway 25 Jul, 2026 Last year, my wife and I hired a contractor to demolish and rebuild a dilapidated house we had bought. We did the maths and took out a mortgage with a bank to cover the remaining costs. That's how the world works nowadays, I guess. Even then, we chose not to complete the full interiors...
The best thing that happened this week This week I released Burst version 1.3.0 which includes 19 achievements to chase after, plus translations to Dutch, French and German. I also added a new power-up called Cross. I hope people enjoy the update! I'm getting a few reviews in on the App Store already, and they're...
After 2 years of pondering to get new skates, I finally got urban skating roller-skates! Not that I could not buy them. My old skates are still in good shape. However, they were meant as temporary. Rightfully so. A test run. As usual, I took my time to decide on an upgrade. After my last pregnancy, my feet gained...
They’ve been burning for over a week, mostly in a remote area, but the fire still needs dealt with. The wind changed yesterday and so did the fire, and the town of Nethybridge was evacuated last night. The town where my brother-in-law, his pregnant partner, and their 1.5yr old son live, and where my in-laws are...
Reply to Don't Take the Black Pill - Andrew Kelley | SSW 2026 Such a nice, hopeful talk in this video. I've noticed I've gotten more and more and more jaded over time. The hypetech booms really do not help, and you know exactly which one I'm talking about at this point in time. But it touched much more things I've...
Ed Catmull, co-founder of Pixar and former president of Disney Animation, was on the David Senra podcast and I quite enjoyed the interview. (If you like the interview, you should read his book.) Ed talks about what he considered his job to be: get the dynamics right for groups of people working together. To do this,...
Nirvana the Band the Show the Movie, trailer, is a bat-shit crazy (to say the least) time-travel caper I found while perusing the movie listings on Kanopy last week. It’s a story about two musicians, Matt Johnson, and Jay McCarrol, portraying themselves, who live in Toronto, Canada. Both are in a music act named...
In 1985, at the age of eleven, I bought my first comic book: The Transformers #9. From there, I went on to collect nearly a thousand comics over my teenage years, mostly in the Marvel universe like Spider-Man and X-men. Lots of Groo the Wanderer (which my mom always enjoyed) and then into stuff like Watchmen and The...
Replied to 5 tactics for hitting the Hacker News front page by Herbert Lui (herbertlui.net) A good article can hit the front page with none of these tactics. But executing all of them perfectly won’t save an article that isn’t any good. I read a post by Herbert Lui titled 5 tactics for hitting the Hacker News front...
Roshan: I saw an interesting tweet today about who-marries-whom, that is which races in the US marry which other races. {{Tweet | name = Crémieux | username = cremieuxrecueil | text = Here's a big chart of the latest data on interracial marriage in America. It's an ethnicity-by-ethnicity breakdown of who marries who...

Hallo, Since I posted an update on what I use, I thought it would be good to dump my current thoughts on some of the tools here. Around a year and a half I finally decided to buy a domain and slowly de-google my digital life. This is when I got zurdala.es. The thing is that I am not fully satisfied with it; I do not...
2026-07-24Hello! I said I would present some street photography this week, but that's not happening. Might be delayed for a short while. In the meantime: here's a bird — a titmouse — eating from my backyard bird feeder. Yes, I've filled it since then. Squirrels get to it all the time.I have my camera set up on a...
MINISTER: Who plays Christ? EDDIE: A kid we’re all very excited about, Todd Hocheiser, wonderful young actor we found in Akron, Ohio, in a nationwide talent hunt. But Hocheiser is seen only fleetingly, and with extreme taste…. We saw in a previous post how earnest Cecil B. deMille was about his religious beliefs....

A roadmap to the fulfilled belonging on the other side of “the great aloneness which knows not what is far and what is near, nor what is small nor great.” The unfolding of life does more than fray our bodies with entropy — it softens our spirit, blunting the edge of vanity and broadening the aperture of beauty, so...
Rogallo v1.1.0 is now available. This release includes a number of new features and improvements, plus a small cosmetic fix. Diagnostics On the off chance that someone else does use Rogallo, and needs help getting to the bottom of some sort of issue, I thought it might be useful to add a diagnostics command to the...
Shot on film last month, looking at LACMA's Urban Light, the Peterson Automotive Museum (red at left) and the Motion Picture Academy Museum (the globe in the distance, center).
These days, unmanaged go func() calls don’t appear as often as they used to in the early days of Go. At this point, everyone knows Dave Cheney’s maxim to “never start a goroutine without knowing how it will stop”. Even so, I still occasionally run into unsynchronized go func() calls doing fire-and-forget work. I’m...
Why is it that when I see anime nerds discussing translations of anime/manga they use the term "localization" and not "translation"? Are they just trying to be fancy, or is there a valid reason? David @ Setouchi This came up recently in a conversation online and, following my rule of "if it's more than three tweets,...
I have written here about masks on twenty separate occasions (this post will make that twenty-one occasions), and my first book of artwork was titled Myth & Masks: Artwork by Paul Watson 2013–2015. They continue to fascinate me for many reasons. I wrote Masks, Deception, and Truth and Masks - a bit of politics and a...
A few days ago I happened upon this video about visual snow syndrome and I watched it even thinking that it was kinda clickbaity, since I always figured that visual snow syndrome is something that a lot of people have and it’s not a big deal. But it actually made me realize that there’s a lot of stuff that’s possibly...
July 2026. Middleton One Row. Near Darlington. From the Steam Machine I walked to Heighington Station, a dull mile through industrial estates, ending at a dead pub commemorating the first ever train. Somewhere along the way I realised I could stay on the service towards Saltburn and get off at Dinsdale, which I’d...

I first read her books back during the pandemic. I think we all had more time to read back then. Lately I've been writing on my Isekai story and watching House of the Dragon so I needed a little palate cleanser. I had bought a copy of Kitchen two years ago and never got around to reading it. Which is fun because...
I don't like doing a lot of things, but sometimes I just do things because I know I'll get an amusing anecdote from it. In fact, that's my main motivation for most things. Sure I might be miserable, and sure I might be surrounded by people I don't know or care about, but at least I'll get a story out of it. I once...
Building a mini homelab from spare parts: a Dell OptiPlex running NixOS, two Raspberry Pis, and an external HDD in a GeeekPi 10-inch rack, with Tailscale, Prometheus, Nextcloud, Restic, and Jellyfin.
I currently have 17 GB free space on my root drive, out of 0.47 TB usable space, that’s 3% free space. I also have an additional harddrive installed, 12 TB, it has 140 GB free, which may seem a lot but it’s actually only about 1%. Your harddrive is probably pretty full too. Maybe not as crammed, but odds are it’s...
cJSON is probably the most widely used JSON parser in the C world. It’s vendored into ESP-IDF, into a lot of embedded firmware, and into a whole lot more server-side C. I found 33 security issues in it, using a mix of AI and some manual fuzzing and review. They affect every version up to and including v1.7.19, and...
You’re refereeing a paper and you come to suspect it was substantially and/or illicily written by an LLM. What should you do? My suggestion: Keep in mind the possibility that you are mistaken as well as the possibility that the AI use falls within the journal’s rules and was disclosed during the submission process....
A complete stranger: “Wow, I don’t hear an accent at all when you talk. Where are you from?” I could have this conversation in my sleep. The only time I can count on this particular conversation not happening is when I’m speaking to someone on the phone.
I think if I had my time again, I would have become a software developer. I just so much fun - coming up with ways to solve a problem in an elegant way is very satisfying. Then people emailing saying they enjoy the tools I'm creating. Very rewarding! Mind you, would it still be as fun if it was my job? I don't know....
I got pissed at Chrome the other day. This is not the first user-hostile thing Chrome did – off the top of my head, I remember the updater fiasco from some years ago, and the more recent auto-installation of a 4GB file – but as you’ll see, this one is squarely in my wheelhouse. The transgression: Chrome took over a...
♠ Problem statement: in Obsidian, out-of-the-box, typing * at the start of a new line emits *|* (an empty bold pair, cursor in the middle) instead of starting a bullet point. The culprit is Settings → Editor → Auto pair Markdown syntax. With it on, every * auto-inserts its closing *, so a * followed by a space never...
