Two consecutive titles on the HN front page yesterday had a 6 in them. This means nothing. But it’s the sort of nothing that lodges in your brain until you do something about it, so what is the most popular number in Hacker News titles? ClickHouse hosts the full HN dataset in their public playground, and I am...
Put Eric Block (Veloce), Bruce Lamont (Yakuza), Steve Shelley (Sonic Youth) and Douglas McCombs (Tortoise, BASIC) in the same room, and you get Sick Gazelle. The name is weirder than the music — a thoroughly engrossing blend of post-rock, shoegaze, ambient and jazz. The seemingly endless intro to “I’ll Come Running”...
“Talks are not merely communication: they are also a performance… So many talks that could have been successful end up flopping because they’re not serious performances.” That’s one observation about job talks from Daniel Muñoz. Dr. Muñoz is a senior lecturer at the Australian National University. Before that, he...
How I added WebMCP tools to a static site, and how to inspect them in Chrome DevTools.
On this hot summer’s day in Basel, Switzerland, the seventh HTTP workshop started. These events tend to work roughly the same way and the people in the room are also to large extent familiar and known since previous editions. Forty people in a meeting room, where we take turns in doing short talks on HTTP and...
July 2026. Sheffield. The only problem with keg beer is that you immediately wish you’d had cask, but I wouldn’t admit that on the cesspit that is CAMRA’s Discourse at the moment. Anyway, I found I couldn’t walk past the Gardeners Rest without seeing what Tribune newspaper just declared the Best Pub Garden In...
'Imagine if we won the World Cup,' said my seven-year-old grandson yesterday. 'Ah, my child,' I replied, laying a grandfatherly hand on his innocent head, 'we have won before – and I was there.' Actually, of course, I made no such reply, not least because my memories of the great victory are hazy, and I could hardly...
2026-07-14Hello! No toilet humor today. I was considering recruiting someone else to write this article, but the scheduling didn't quite work out. This is a detailed image of a log in the forest. Its bark is textured in spots and blurry in others, against a smudge of green and gray in the background. When choosing...
At reCAP this year, I am honoured to share a talk slot with Patrice Bender, a good friend and adjacent colleague from the CAP Compiler team, and cohost / copresenter on the Hands-on SAP Dev mini-series on the core expression language in CDS. The talk is titled Expressions and Abstractions - Two Developer Superpowers...
For many years, what interested me most about photography were shapes and colours. People didn’t play a major role, because they didn’t fit the pattern. That has changed in recent years, and I very often press the shutter button when I spot an interesting scene. Not like a street photographer who actively approaches...
Photos taken on a mobile phone can include metadata. I like it for various reasons. My various projects depend on metadata, such as date, location, orientation, etc. But more and more, the phones are removing that metadata when I transmit it. Some of them also change the file name. But I care, and I want them. It’s...
In my memory it was always warm on my special radio days, and the back garden always bathed in sunlight. With my very white skin that would mean I would get a tremendous sunburn very fast. I had way too much experience with that.In July, I never fell for the enticing lure of sunbathing. I had better plans in front...
The Movie I Lost and the Software I Found mtift Tue, 07/14/2026 - 08:45 My Daughter’s First DaysShortly after my daughter was born, near the beginning of my year as a stay-at-home dad, I made a short video of her first days using iMovie. This was long before phones could shoot video with a tap or apps auto-generated...
The 80/20 rule says that 80% value come from 20% effort. What if we apply the 80/20 rule to the first 80%? So 80% of 80% of value come from 20% of 20% of effort. Or 64% of the value come from 4% of the effort. Apply it again and you’ll get ~51% value from ~1% effort. Which is ballpark close to “Dimidium facti, qui...
On July 4, 2026, the United States celebrated its 250th anniversary, also known as the semiquincentennial (see Dictionary.com for an explanation of the nomenclature). In so doing, the United States continued its tradition of holding national celebrations every 50 years, beginning with the July 4, 1826 American...
Every weeknote and monthly summary, I list all the videogames I played. There are a few things that I do to help myself keep track of it all. Some tools I’ve mentioned here and there, but never all in a single post. I won’t really be making any specific tutorials, but leads in the right direction, in case you are...
It's been nearly 5 years since Hara Shakti was craned into the Great Ouse at Westview Marina in Earith, 5 years of stress, anxiety, anger and bloody hard work (by Nat), but we're almost there. Next week we're travelling back to where it all began to get the hull blacked, replace the prop shaft, add a thrust bearing,...
When the gears are getting unstuck each morning, wondering what the day will hold, I water flowers on the porch.Currently Listening: Labi Siffre “Bless the Telephone”Reply via email
A couple of tips and tricks I learned using Sublime Text to code my websites!
So, the writing prompt asks, “What’s a piece of technology you’re convinced will exist in twenty years?” Twenty years. That’s a long time. I think it’s pretty optimistic of us to assume we’re still going to have electricity in twenty years. At the rate we’re going, I don’t think we’ll even have any technology to...
Rogallo v0.7.0 is now available. The main changes in this release revolve around the display and navigation of links. The aim of Rogallo, as a "TUI" application, is that it is usable purely with the keyboard, and also very usable with the mouse too. So far I think I've managed to hit that mark, but I felt that...
Setting up a new server with basic security measures and migrating a Docker based website from an old server to it.
AND IT WAS DONE. GO PLAY WHAT HATH GOD WROUGHT! (That said, this post will be spoiler-free.) This game was a massive team undertaking, and I haven’t had to lead a creative team on something of this scale and complexity before. I’m so glad that most comments have been speaking highly of every part of the game– to me,...
Please enjoy some camera focus adventures (and bonus flowers) This morning, one of the cats was sunbathing in the window and what struck me was the "golden hour" light that was hitting them; usually that's rad as hell and super photogenic but as it was 11am I had a bit of concern. Going outside, I found the sky a...
But we will, someday, if we ignore him now Photo by Beth Stevenson on Unsplash We were each born with a connection with heaven. Our choices and our focus strengthen or weaken it. A strong connection is a spiritual lifeline, while an unsteady one leaves us open to straying down paths that lead away from happiness....
If we're being honest, there is only one thing people will be paying attention to this week, so we will knock that one out first and then get on to some pretty cool comics, shows, and albums that are definitely still worth your time despite The Odyssey dominating the tubes and airwaves.🎬 The OdysseyEveryone already...
I try not to be on my iPhone (hence my guides for automatically making it grayscale and not knowing your Screen Time code). The main tool for keeping tabs on this is Apple's Screen Time feature which, while limited in granularity, is better than nothing—until it's wrong. Recently Screen Time started showing large,...
A few weeks ago I decided to be bold and put out there that I had itches I wanted to scratch. It isn't something I normally do, as I usually reject myself before allowing others to do so. So, after the Wonders of Web Weaving podcast was published, I rejoiced online and said that I was grateful for how, in 2026, I'd...
The article you are currently reading has been written in a markup language of my own design, called JAMES. It’s a line-based language that borrows ideas from Gemtext (itself inspired partly from Gophermaps and Troff though it’s not a programming language like Troff is but a markup language. The rest of this article...
This is a design joke that always makes me laugh: This was made by… someone, a while back, I believe in response to the Twitter logo redesign of 2012, which showed the new logomark as composed of exclusively circles: Now, to be clear: that Twitter logo redesign was gorgeous, and I do not particularly care if it was...
I know you want to use AI as an escape. It is so tempting. You get to sit in your bubble and imagine everything and see it come to life and your agent buddy will keep cheering you on while you get nothing done with your life. And I think that’s the biggest danger of AI. You convince yourself that you are doing...
AI-drunk companies love to trumpet their millions or billions of users. What they don’t tell you is that most are forced to use such features. Think of the AI overviews that Google Search forces on you, whether you asked for it or not. Samsung seems to have taken this tactic to the next level. According to How-To...
Smartphones have made traveling immeasurably easier. And I don’t think that was entirely free. Almost 25 years ago I was in a city that wasn’t my own. I’d never been there before. I was there along with my best friend, who lived in a different city, opposite ways from mine. We traveled there by bus to meet with a...

The vibeLow battery week. Not bad. Not memorable. Just warm, slow, and a little foggy. I was not really feeling like myself, and most of the week had that “I am here, but not fully here” feeling.Highlights🌡️ The office was way too hot, and I was already feeling run down, so I took a couple of days off toward the end...
LLMs generate code incredibly fast, but to ensure they generate exactly what is intended, they need clear boundaries. Abstractions and Domain-Specific Languages (DSLs) provide a strong harness that guides LLMs right from the start. Unmesh Joshi describes how the example of Tickloom - a domain model and DSL for...
Paper train! I love GO merchendise, even if its for kids!
That is Vida Chenoweth; the picture was taken when she was in the second of her three careers. Her first career was as a pioneer of the marimba as an instrument for classical music. Chenoweth may have been the first person to play the marimba in concert at Carnegie Hall, in 1959, when she performed the world...
We are currently looking to get a new washing machine. Looking online at the usual big stores and every single one has an awful AWFUL website experience. These are large companies who are typically owned by a large conglomerate who should, somewhere in the depths of their organisations, have people who know how to...
Replied to An Opinionated Guide to Ranking Ethical NBA Championships in the 21st Century by Russell Samora (The Pudding) I believe there have only been five truly ethical NBA champions in the last 25 years: teams that don’t need an asterisk by their title. Writing for The Pudding, Russell Samora recently put...
A week ago, I had launched this site using QuatroSlab for page titles and Google’s Slabo for body copy. For those that have been around awhile and are familiar with SMACSS, you might recognize QuatroSlab from that site. I like the font and started off with it to see how I’d feel about it on the this new design. Then...
A birthday, a funeral and a train journey that actually went just fine filled the week that was over faster than I could look around. Just like I mentioned last week, the current weather has a bigger effect on me than the one during the heat wave so everything has been a bit of a blur. I did do some touristy things...
I went for an 8km (5 mile) run this evening. I'm working my way up to 10km, but I think this was a little too much, too soon. We'll see how my middle-aged joints are in the morning... Thanks for reading this post via RSS. RSS is ace, and so are you. ❤️ You can reply to this post by email, or leave a comment.
Wait for the Lord; be strong and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord! Psalm 27:14 (NRSVCE) Though I wander in darkness I wait for the Lord Though my heart is broken I wait for the Lord Though I feel betrayed I wait for the Lord Though I drown in confusion I wait for the Lord Though my prayers feel unheard...
In my last post I wrote about how less code is better. That still holds. I also still find software valuable, and enjoy creating it, when I cannot find an existing solution that meets my needs. It is especially rewarding when I see others find it useful too. This week two parkrun Run Directors told me they have...
The assay house at Marsk keeps no fire. Heat swells the brass, and a swelled beam reads long, so the arms of the great scale hang over a slate floor cold enough to ache the teeth of anyone who works there past the third bell. I was sixteen the winter I was to be sworn, and I remember the cold better than I remember...
larp.website Not sure it’s a good sign I thought there was a chance this was real and not satire.
Coding agents are becomming more and more popular (well – I guess). Yet the dependece to LLM providers is pretty obvious: Starting in June, GithubCopilot changed to usage-based billing. In April and June Anthropic’s Fable 5 and Mythos 5 being available, then not, then limited, … And since then I read more and more...
