2026-07-15Hello! This is an open letter to M, my only (so far) imaginary guest. By the way, I've since learned about the word "epistolary". Reading into it, I kinda hate that trope... so this might be the last one I do in this style. For now, M, let's set aside the things we could never do and the places we could...
In this 7-minute video, kaptainkristian talks about the fascinating process of making Who Framed Roger Rabbit, the pre-CGI hybrid animation/live action movie from 1988: This is called “bumping the lamp” – a phrase coined by Disney during the production of Roger Rabbit to describe going above and beyond what was...
Humans are evolving rapidly and our spirit and instincts are changing. There's no such thing as a perfect animal in this world, so a flawless instinct doesn't exist either. We're all animals in the process of evolving. Sa whether or not our instincts match the world is iust a coincidence, and we have no idea what...
We all know the drill. You type https:// into the browser, a padlock shows up, and everyone collectively agrees not to think about what just happened. That works fine right up until the moment some application on your server starts throwing certificate verify failed while curl against the same endpoint works...
Being in the ergonomic keyboard rabbit hole means that I spend a lot of time thinking about and trying different keyboards. Sadly, I realized that none of them are particularly easy to recommend to someone who’s never used an ergonomic keyboard before, or to someone who doesn’t want it to become a hobby. A new...
I’m blaming the heat, but I have lost all motivation for writing. I’ve mentioned in the past that I’m writing a novel, and I’m at the stage of saying the rough draft is complete. So what I need to do know is read through a chapter, make some notes, and then rewrite. I’ve been at this stage for a few weeks now. It’s...
Can you find food for us?” she asked, rather vaguely and timidly. “Hunting takes time, and weapons.” “I meant, with, you know, spells.” “I can call a rabbit,” he said, poking the fire with a twisted stick of juniper. “The rabbits are coming out of their holes all around us, now. Evening’s their time. I could call...
I don't want to read your AI-generated email. Lots of reasons why, but here's the core of it: I want the text to reflect your thoughts. I want to know that you, the human, actually had those ideas and had them authentically enough to express them in exactly the form I see on the page. For personal emails, I want...
Today is the first big smoke day of 2026. The past five years we've had some brutal streaks of smoke days from all the smoke coming south from Canada and northern Minnesota but this one is extra bad.
.democracy{display:flow-root}.democracy[class]{:where(ul,ul...
Re: What is the oldest thing you own? In reply to: What is the oldest thing you own? — Thomas Rigby From time to time, I get the urge to just unplug everything and become a full-on Luddite, you know? The latest episode of this was triggered by the discovery that over 80% of the e-books I’ve purchased turned out to...
July 2026. Rotherham. Visiting Dad yesterday a long-term aquaintance said to me “You must enjoy sitting around relaxing at home“. I was speechless. I’m aware some folk do like spending time at home, but 4 years after completing the Beer Guide I’m still not one of them. More than a day in Sheffield and I need to...
My son bought me these polished hematite balls. We're both hematite fans. They're quite magnetic. If you get the rotations right they're happy enough to sit in this arrangement. At the beginning of this year I began a Diploma in Science, at the University of Queensland. For several years I've been thinking about how...
When I was building this site, I was keeping it lean but perhaps a bit messy. It’s not a big complex site and I didn’t need to write CSS to maintain a big complex site. As such, I even wondered if I’d stick to any kind of naming convention. Old habits are hard to break and I found anytime I tried to get away with...
I've always wanted to add a section to the blog for short status-type posts. I didn't get around to experimenting with this on WordPress, but I have now built this in Astro. I'm calling this section of the blog "Stream", and each of these short posts a "Streamlet". I now need to find a way to make it as easy as...

If you missed it. I already described day one. Caffeinated and ready, we all gathered in the same spacious room as yesterday, but seated in new places as “suggested” by our captain. Some of us even remembered to move over the name tags we wrote yesterday to our new seats. No time was wasted on introductions today....

Heads-up: This post is a bit of a bummer so stay away if you’re looking for something positive. When I went to open the bedroom curtains this morning, I did not expect the outside to look like it was lit by a giant night lamp. This is a photo I took in the apartment at 10 a.m.: And here’s our backyard: The photos...
One thing I found out moving to an English-speaking country is how my definition of "snack" is different from everybody else's. Imagine my surprise when one time my wife asked me if I wanted a snack, and I was presented with sweets! Clearly that's dessert, something different entirely. I don't usually have ramen as...
So as shared by somebody on the Amiga Addict Discord, today is the day that – if you play Championship Manager 97/98 for 30 seasons, on the 15th July 2026, you get an endgame screen, and encouragement to sign up as a play tester and a researcher for future games.1 I played Champ Man 97/98 loads growing up, and...
Bookmarked “From coder to curator” by André Staltz I don’t claim to know what the future holds for AI software. But I this post aligns most with where I see the industry going in the short term. As a senior engineer I spend a lot of my time reviewing code, questioning assumptions, and ensuring quality. The current...
Rain falls in seconds that fold into themselves. It is unsayable, yes, and so it sounds shitty. It is not unthinkable. Can you dream it? Can you? It was loud, yes, and you closed the windows. Why? When was the last time we danced? Was my face wide, like valleys of open hands? Did I smile? We don’t have to talk. You...
At Homebrew Website Club this week, Thomas mentioned the term “tag healing” during a discussion about tags. The definition I caught was that tag healing is related to reviewing and, if necessary, consolidating, tags used for blog posts or documents. Someone (Tabitha?) said that “tag healing” sounded like a...
aphera.co I played around with the beta of this and got a little confused, but finally watched the quick two minute demo and it instantly clicked for me. I highly recommend checking Aphera out. It's fast and a delight to use--plus you can buy it and not pay a subscription, which is a nice change of pace.
So Linus Torvalds, head of the Linux kernel development, put his foot down on the Linux Kernel development mailing list when someone was bringing up criticism of LLMs: “Linux is not one of those anti-AI projects, and if somebody has issueswith that, they can do the open-source thing and fork it. Or just walk away....

When Andrés, my oldest son, was 9, we were watching a video about Logo, the programming language. He got especially excited with Turtle Graphics, where you have a "pen" on screen that you can draw with using commands to move it. That night I started a project using p5.js and my limited programming skills to do just...
The most popular link last time was this invitation to a barbecue, with the 100 Jumps browser game second. The latest heatwave has weighed heavily on everyone here. It is just too hot. All of my time seems to be spent working, watching World Cup football, or lying on my bed without any covering, hoping that I will be able to sleep. On Thursday I met one of my neighbours on the train and he offered to give me a lift home....
Rogallo v0.8.0 is now available. This release includes a small bug fix, a big change to how external links and unhandled MIME types are dealt with, and a further improvement to link navigation. First the big change: hand-off of unhandled content and trust. Until now, if Rogallo was met with a URI it didn't know how...
Few things in our culture are more wounding than the concept of healing — as if the pains and losses that we suffer are an illness, a malfunction of the psyche to be cut out like a tumor, rather than a natural function of being alive, of feeling life deeply and living it fully. All our sorrows have been wasted if we...
We spend roughly one-third of our life asleep as a biological imperative. My relationship with sleep kind of tells my life story, not in dreams but in the pure mechanics of when I went to bed and when I got up. Oddly, sleep has seldom been a neutral element in my life. It's been something that either prevented me...

I have been working on two new themes for my minimalist doric-themes package. The original plan was to publish them together as part of the version 1.2.0 from a few days ago (the version that also brought doric-tiger and doric-lion), but then I decided to refine them further. doric-lilac is a light theme, while...
Hell would rather freeze over before I use FL as my main DAW — Me, apparently While I agree that FL definitely needs some MAJOR improvements, all that’s left to overhaul is the optimization of the graphics stack and the MIDI subsystem. My gripes with it got pretty much.. resolved over the years, which are basically:...

Related Post: You Should Try A Framework That Doesn't Hold Your Hand This is probably going to be a bit of a incoherent ramble.
