In writing and publishing, I’ve been everywhere. I’ve been edited by men and women, by the non-binary and the trans; by the old, the young, the middle-aged; by liberal Catholics and trad Catholics, by mainline Protestants, by evangelicals, by hardline Anglican traditionalists and the Orthodox, by Muslims and Jews,...

Banks and financial institutions in Canada make a lot of money. In the first quarter of 2026, the big 6 hit $19 billion in profit, up from $14 billion the year prior[1]. They have refined their businesses to be well-oiled machines, yet fraud and unauthorized transactions are increasingly a thorn in their sides. Not...
The worst possible thing I can do when I'm having a bad AuDHD day is start organizing my office, and that's the main thing I'm inclined to do, probably to somehow reclaim a bit of control. The process is the same every time. I wake up, maybe tired after having only a few hours of sleep, and the tiredness throws off...
Hello! I’ve been working on a Django site recently, and I decided to use SQLite as the database. When I was getting started with using SQLite as database for a website I read a bunch of blog posts about how it is totally fine to use SQLite in production for a small site and I think it is totally fine, but what I did...
[Equations in this post may not look right (or appear at all) in your RSS reader. Go to the original article to see them rendered properly.] You’ve probably seen somewhere that the density of Saturn is less than that of water. If there were a bathtub big enough to hold it, Saturn would float. I think I first read...
Rating: 🟩 Type: Non-Fiction If you are an avid reader of Doctorow's blog "Pluralistic" you will have probably heard most of the arguments here before. That isn't too much of a complaint, after all, Docotow specifically says the point of his blog is to help him flesh out his arguments for his books. Overall, I really...
Read Developing your mindfulness practice 🙂! now!So… read any good pamphlets lately?I love a good pamphlet, and by that I mean crazy pamphlet, even when it was Jack Chick telling me that I am going to hell. The internet has ruined them. A pamphlet is like a mode of poetry with constraints imposed not by rules...
See also: day one, day two. There is only one thing that is better than two days of HTTP workshop, and that is of course three days of HTTP workshop. The final day of this edition of the series started out with us again shuffling around where we parked ourselves around the big table. Except Mr captain of course who...
Matt creates and designs some great apps, they are thoughtful, and considerate of the user. The fact his latest Micro app is called ‘That Guy’ suggests, with a subtle wink and a nod, some knowing on his part about what he has created and, whilst I laud the thinking behind it, I can’t help my gut reaction being JUST...
There was a Man, and still there is, Who more than man became; I learned his name -- I-AM -- and since I’ve never been the same.
Recently, I was talking with an online friend that I met in the FGC community. We quickly developed a kind of gaming friendship where we discovered that we both shared the same interests and played the same games, other than fighting stuff. In our last conversation, he told me that he was basically quitting fighting...
There’s a ton of information on the internet about baking sourdough. Some present the process as simple, when it’s not. Others make it intensely complicated and nerdy. Some will say that making a nice loaf requires great precision in timing and ingredients. But my process seems pretty robust to my frequent neglect...
There was, a long time ago, a small kingdom, and in that small kingdom was a prince who deemed himself just. This Prince reveled, above all else, in subjecting his people to the most peculiar trials. In his Princely youth, he enjoyed making his servants go about their chores while hopping around on one leg, or while...
July 2026. Kelham. Sheffield. I know jealousy is a terrible thing, but I really am jealous of Simon’s frenetic progress towards completion of the Beer Guide. It’s not always fun, and BRAPA has the really scary stuff still to come (probably in a boat in a storm near Sark), but nothing gives you that adrenaline rush...
I have been wearing smartwatches for over ten years now, pretty much ever since Apple released the first Apple Watch. I went through several of the basic models, eventually landing on the Apple Watch Ultra and up until recently wearing the Ultra 2 daily. I really liked their design and the interchangeable bands,...
Problem statement: a site / domain needs pop-ups for OAuth / logins, but I don’t want to disable Safari’s pop-up blocker globally just to appease a couple of domains. Safari lets one scope the exception on a per-site basis. The domain has to be open in a tab first, so that its entry shows up in the list: Open the...
2026-07-16Hello!This was a weird place — I'll start with that. Some music and arts building that was open to the public but felt empty; I left a few minutes later to look for lunch. These lights are not electronic. They are open to the sky above, and are separated with both glass and... some water. This was an...
Yes, this one is a real word according to Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary (1913). Borrowed from Latin, this word (and its cognates like the French bibliothèque and Spanish biblioteca) means "library" in modern English. Libraries are quiet havens for enriching my knowledge, but they can be restrictive with...

I've released v0.9.0 of Rogallo. The first big change in this release is the addition of syntax highlighting to pre-formatted text. Much like in Markdown, Gemtext also supports pre-formatted text bounded by code fences. Gemtext supports the concept of "alt-text" for such text, like this: ```python def hello(name:...
“I have got to make everything that has happened to me good for me… There is not a single degradation of the body which I must not try and make into a spiritualising of the soul.” “Oh, to be reborn within the pages of a book,” Patti Smith wrote as she contemplated time and transformation. “Everything pours forth,”...

“The fact that you, an expert human, generated the text is evidence that the view is worth thinking about—more so than if the text were generated by an LLM.” That’s Eric Schwitzgebel (UCR), writing at The Splintered Mind about why he doesn’t want to receive AI-written emails about philosophy, and why philosophy...

This was not what I expected. And I know to expect shocking from Murata. But I didn't knew how much sex was involved... got interesting, to the point I could not stop reading, mainly the evolution of the society. But that ending was a bit out of context... like... she broke? Everything was rationalization until the...

New computer means new configuration from scratch! Since Emacs is the mainstay program I use across devices, I want to document how I’m doing web development with it right now. First I took the time to go over my init.el and remove anything I’m not using. I like to aim for about 100-120 lines of code on it. It’s an...
Most of the tech support I have done for family, friends, and everyday users starts before I touch the device.Someone hands over a phone with a strange warning, a laptop that will not sign in, or an email they are afraid to open. They ask, “Can you fix this?” What they often mean is, “Did I ruin something?” or “Can...

There are insights, vistas, glimpses and perspectives that don’t fit into any particular pattern or category. I like to call them scenes, and as photographs they always have their own charm. Here are a few of them from our trip to the wonderful island of Sicily, as the fifth part of my photo series.
I share my process with a timelapse talking through the process of making this retro dating sim style scene in Aseprite.
The website that hosted this review is no longer online so I would like to keep it here. The below review was written when I was sighted. I am fully blind now. Side note, nearly 15 years later, this game seems like some serious fun now! I’d gladly go back and time and tell my younger year old self, hey, trust me,...
Following the celebration of my 20 years with Linux, I wanted to recreate the moment I installed Ubuntu “Breezy Badger” 5.10 for the first time, and with QEMU it was quite easy to do on my modern Fedora 44 environment of 2026. Install and Run First of all I downloaded the install CD for i386 of that old release,...
Anthony Albanese, the Australian Prime Minister, says he wants to make Australia an “attractive destination” for investment in AI development, during a speech delivered on Wednesday. Albanese also wants to balance the opportunities and risks presented by the technologies, particularly concerns that AI uptake will...
I have a use case where I need to copy files from Nextcloud to S3 storage using my phone, and I think I finally found the perfect apps for this. While I use rclone on my PC, I wasn’t aware of any app for this on Android. But there actually is some: RSAF (available on GitHub or F-Droid). It uses rclone and provides...
I wish I could remember how this podcast came across my radar so I could give credit where it’s due. But alas, I cannot. It’s episode 217 with Dr. Iain McGilchrist. At one point, he shares his perspective about how science and reason can only take you so far: [science and reason] have their limitations. Most...
I love reading. I caught the bug as a middle-schooler when I got caught skipping school, and as punishment, I had to read The Chronicles of Amber and do a book report about it. Even today, opening a book and fanning the pages to get the paper smell activates very fond memories and emotions. I remember a time before...
Anyone using Pop!_OS with Cosmic? I tried it when it was first released, but I looks like they've done a lot of dev work to it and it's improving all the time. Considering installing it again... Thanks for reading this post via RSS. RSS is ace, and so are you. ❤️ You can reply to this post by email, or leave a comment.
Carried this one home from a Nordic cafe in Pioneer Square and it is the best espresso of the year
You know what, I was kind of busy last week with my OCC project, and I was also building a website for a friend who is opening her own doctor's office, and so I completely forgot that my blog turned three years old last Thursday! Well I actually didn't completely forget, but I was convinced that the date of my first...
I’ve been drowning. I’ve been trying to keep my head above a raging storm of feelings that I never knew had a collective name when put together: anticipatory grief.1 Obviously, like everything in my life, once I can put a name to something, I end up going down the rabbit hole of research. I needed to understand what...
When people think of legacy modernization, most folks aren't imagining the target environment will be Java 8. But this was the challenge facing Nik Malykhin when he needed to run a Java 1.5 codebase on today's hardware. His early use of LLMs gave plausible answers that did not hold up in the codebase. Progress came...
Oops -- you ran an aggressive de-bloater on your rooted Android device, and put it into a boot loop. What next?
Writing for the world is something which has ebbed and flowed for me over time. I’ve always liked sharing my thoughts, starting with websites all the way back when I was a kid. In times when I sustained it, I had various “blog”-like things for technical projects which would often veer into sharing personal beliefs...
Thank you to everyone who answered the call for good software updates from last week. I received so many nominations that the list below is severely narrowed down, but I appreciated every response! I grouped the answers in sections I saw emerge organically, I included links to apps, and did some light editing for...
Adventures in janky CSSI’ve been making steady progress with the new website except in one area. I’m writing lots of HTML and CSS almost every day, but not knowing any JavaScript has become an issue. Key elements like injecting a blog, making content collections, and making interactive menus require JS knowledge....
