Iâve been very happy with my Y1 MP3 player over the past 9 or so months. I take it with me everywhere! Itâs a companion on my commute, itâs a focus tool in my open office, itâs a way to have a single-purpose device that doesnât have the distractions of my glass Everything Rectangle and, as the phone ages, a way to...
I was looking for an alternative to Tinkercad to simulate building, coding, and running Arduino projects. SimulIDE Circuit Simulator seemed like an ideal candidate. SimulIDE is a simple real time electronic circuit simulator, intended for hobbyist or students to learn and experiment with analog and digital...

Replied to I Do Not Recommend Google Hardware by Marius (ăăȘăŠăč) For its first year or so, the Nexus 5 was actually a likeable phone ... Then the hardware started giving up. The battery, which had been mediocre to begin with, became unreliable and the phone would report 40% charge one moment and shut off entirely the...
All the things that I wrote below were written on the first day of my holiday. A holiday that I took to solve some personal issues and refresh my mind a little bit. I'm better now, but I wanted to post this anyway because someone might be feeling the same way and probably a few days away might help you. I'm just...
We had packed lunches every day for 10 years and retired at 40 Auntie Beeb Just reading an article about the FIRE (Financially Independent, Retire Early) movement and I have Opinionsâą. First, my obligatory declaration that I'm not talking about you. The headline centres around a couple who big up their coupon...
June 2026. Sheffield. Thursday morning saw a bit of tension in the dining room at Tunbridge Wellsâs Russell Hotel, which had kindly found Mrs RM a fan while I was out melting in London. Youâll remember Mrs RM had ordered the Full English so I could have her artisanal sausage and black pudding (âYou DO like black...
Intended audience: data compression geeks. The Burrows-Wheeler transform takes a string as an input and rearranges its characters, grouping them by context. It is invertible with đȘ(1) additional input, and together these properties give it a place in data compression and genome alignment. What Wikipedia doesnât tell...
Dear Self, You visit Bubbles every day, and with good reason. You are finding new voices, interesting sites, and realising that the internet you loved all those years ago is still out there, youâd just forgotten how to look. Itâs a great resource. And boy those upvotes are addictive. Thing is, youâve lost your...
Yesterday I went to Safewayâa grocery store in town we only go to once or twice a yearâbecause theyâre the only store in the area currently carrying the (very good) Waterloo Root Beer Float seltzer. Safeway was our primary our first year-and-a-half out of college, from 1998-2000 when we lived closer to the city, so...
I visited my eighth and final Louis Sullivan jewel box bank yesterday morning. The Purdue State Bank (now a Chase branch) is in West Lafayette, Indiana. As a graduate of the University of Illinois, I have thoughts about Purdue University and its substandard engineering program, but I will keep those thoughts to...
a half-assed review"> In an alternative universe where Superman establishes a new world order under his iron fist, Batman and other heroes must fight back against Superman and those that have pledged their allegiance to his dictatorship. After all the fun had for a lot of time, it was time to move to the next title,...
I know Iâm usually driving the Finder pretty hard, but I think thatâs a necessity, given its position as the center of macOS for power users, and its situation where it feels like Apple pretty much gave up on it. But I also want to show things that Finder does well, and this might be something no one does nearly as...
Yes, late pictures are late. It happens. For the last couple of years Lyssa and I have gone back to DC to spend Thanksgiving with her family (my in-laws), and one of the things we do is see a hockey game while we're there. In 2024 it was Washington Capitals vs. New York Islanders and somehow (I don't quite know how)...
Roshan: Wikipen [[File:{{#setmainimage:Screenshot_-_Taskmaster_KB_for_Credential_Proxy.jpg}}|thumb|One of the pages in the KB]] Having a single store so I can query my second mind of things I've written down has always been something I've wanted. That's evolved in various ways. At one point, I had these as just...
Let's do some Julyreply shall we?? Photo unrelated, here's a sick-ass sunset from the other day As Junited has come to an end, its originator reached out about this little thing called JulyReply that sort of acts like a "yes, and" for blog posts throughout the month and like, you know me. I'm nothing if not down for...
New links⊠Despite skepticism about philosophy as a whole, specific philosophical research programs make progress. But probably not yours. â Still, âyou might be contributing to, even if not helping to constitute, philosophical progress,â argues Lewis Ross. Feel better? âFor the very first time, biologists packed...

Some reflections while cataloguing my playing card collection.
For the last couple of days when it was really hot I had my big fan running almost 24/7: during the day to bring some respite through moving air and during the night to make sure that the cooler air from outside makes it into the parts of the apartment where there isnât much of a natural flow of air.So just for the...
A swan and their cygnets on the bank of the River Bulbourne by The Old Mill, Berkhamsted. Boiling. In the UK we are not equipped to live through day after day of mid-30s°C heat, with the temperature only dropping into the mid-20s overnight with barely a breeze in the air. Sleeping was a tough gig, lying on top of...
Read What Do Moms Know About Fashion? now!Who do you find yourself relating to more in this story, the mother or daughter? As a very independent and strong-willed person, my younger self would have answered that question as definitely the daughter. I was always the one in my family that insisted on finding my own way...
2026-07-02Hello!I'm writing this after watching Kimberly Clark's fight against excessive consumer culture. She produced a guide to stop shopping addiction â with a theme song! This five-video long series on overconsumption is amazing. From the start, it's clear how much her emphasis is on the individual and how we...
June is over! Did you know this month was my birthday? Yeah itâs kinda crazy, a lot has changed, I am twenty six now yet more than half the movies I watched were Direct-to-DVD 50 minute films made to sell action figures! More things happened of course. The World Cup is going great for my country, Mexico has managed...
I collect cool, interesting links spread all over the web and share them here every Thursday. Hope you enjoy! More of them in the archive. Favicon Website. This entire website is served from inside the âfaviconâ â that little icon you see on your browser tab. The author explains how he did it. Are you in the...
This is my bike. This is my bike!! I have been riding bicycles regularly as an adult for the past 15 years or so. At one point, I was riding to and from work every single day, rain or shine, as my primary mode of transport, and it was sometimes literally my only source of joy many days. I have put my bike on planes,...
We just released Perfetto v57 and I wanted to share the new things Iâm most excited about. This is something I wanted to do for past releases but I just never quite got round to it. Itâs also something I plan on doing more of going forward: there might even be dedicated pieces if I think the feature deserves it!...
And here we are again, another half year has passed. Time to take a quick look back at my June. Well, not much actually happened ⊠There was my trip to the office. I was in SchwÀbisch Hall for a few days for the planning workshop that takes place every few months, where we discuss the topics for the next release. I...
Wednesday in EKSN wasn't looking promising airplane-wise, but I decided to bike there anyway, because a) the weather was wonderful, and b) I wanted to test our new backup bicycle that we bought second-hand. But no sooner had I reached the airport than the airport manager (a great guy, I tell you) let me know that he...
I have found a peculiar delight in encryption, and particularly in using pgp-based asymmetric cryptography. This is especially useful for securing email communications, but doing so requires remembering to run M-x mml-secure-sign or mml-secure-encrypt in Mail Utilities For Emacs (Mu4e) before sending the message....
These past 6 weeks have been quite tiring to me, and I have so many reasons to be so very tired of things right now. Iâm doing what I can to enjoy the things Iâm able to do, but, oh god do things suck right now, for so many people that I know. Induced gender dysphoriaI am so tired of getting misgendered,...

I always see these posts about ditching smartphones and going back to flip phones that only call and this and that. I assume these people don't use auth apps or phone 2FA. If you don't need them to access work or have a non cellular device just for apps then maybe you can sneak past this. We just nuked a couple of...
June has just ended, and it was fun to take part in Robertâs Junited campaign, even though I had a few days with gaps and only managed to collect 29 links. For my first time participating, though, thatâs pretty near optimal. Today Robert has launched the next stage: JulyReply. Now itâs not just about collecting, but...
Things have felt heavier than I expected lately, and I have caught myself being more quiet than usual. Not in a dramatic way. Just one of those stretches where my brain feels a little slower to warm up, and the things that usually sound fun take a bit more effort.I am trying to count the small momentum where I can:...
I published âThank You, Canadaâ yesterday morning, on Canada Day, listing a bunch of things I appreciate Canada for, and the first thing on the list was universal healthcare. Well, 6 hours laterâthanks to the forces unbeknownst to usâI certainly put this Canadian perk to the test as I found myself and my wife...
Why ability canât be factored from a single life A student with perfect pitch sits in a Mandarin classroom. Perfect pitch is close to an ideal endowment for a tonal language â the four tones are pitch contours, and she can hear them cold. She studies for two years. She can read, she has the grammar, she has the...
AntologĂa de la literatura fantĂĄstica, compiled by Jorge Luis Borges, Silvina Ocampo and Adolfo Bioy Casares. An extensive selection of fantastic stories, some more clearly so than others. My clear favorite was Enoch Soames, by Max Beerbohm, which is in the public domain. It's a great story. You can clearly see...
So here is a new project on GitLab called NeXTClock: a small browser-based recreation of a NeXTSTEP-style clock applet from the 1990s. This modern version renders a 64-unit clock face into a square <canvas> using JavaScript and requestAnimationFrame(), with optional scaling from 64 to 500 pixels, because, well, Java...
On making mistakes and not starting overLast week, I wrote a blog post that I now regret publishing. I felt it was too negative, I was complaining too much, and it didnât feel particularly helpful to me or anyone else. In other words, it was the opposite of everything I try to do here. My first impulse was to delete...
I've just updated BagOfStuff with a change and addition, in anticipation of some work I'll be doing on Rogallo in the near future. The change is a small and simple one, adding del support to the history classes. The addition is a simple cache manager. For now it's just a straightforward bit of code that, given a set...
I admit itâI didnât watch this drama because it had a compelling storyline or deep themes. The primary reason was that I wanted to support Zheng Yecheng, who I think does good work and need more publicity. Still, I was curious why he agreed to star in a short drama. I was initially pretty amused by how Show didnât...
I was popping off about negation being an act of creativity, when Blake Watson introduce me to the idea of the âThis Page Intentionally Left Blankâ-Project (Internet Archive): In former times printed manuals had some blank pages, usually with the remark âthis page intentionally left blankâ. In most cases there had...

For years I was firmly in the mechanical keyboard camp, and specifically a 60% person. No numpad, no function row, no arrow cluster, just the keys I actually used, in a footprint small enough to leave room for the mouse. A handful of boards came and went, but they all had the same shape: clacky, and a bit of a...
I recently had a "phone support" call with my parents, where they needed help with their computers and smartphones and the internet router. They regularly ask me for help, because they're completely overwhelmed and out of their depth when it comes to modern technology, and it makes me sad to see how much they...
