Thought I was done adding new pages to my link directory, but no. This time a really small one, that collects a few strays from other sections, and mostly balances things out. There are now one hundred links per page on average, which appears to be the ideal amount for easy handling. Up next: cleaning up cruft.
Happy July! Here are a few photos from my phone from the last month with neither rhyme nor reason to the theme. Thanks for reading this post via RSS! Let me know your thoughts by sending me an email: rss@thomasrigby.com.

June 2026. London. A day at the in-laws, bearing up in the Tunbridge Wells heat better than me, and then the 17:10 into Charing Cross for a gig. The rail advice was not to travel unless absolutely necessary. I asked ChatGPT for guidance. Well, there you go. It was like a fridge on the Southeastern service, though...
This essay is adapted from Traversal. She is looking at the staff lines of a strange symphony in blue, her cautious disbelief punctured by a burst of delirious wonderment. Brushes and tubes of paint are scattered about her — paint she has spent years mixing into the perfect shades of blue to color a world’s worth of...
A nivel...
Quoted World Cup debrands mega stadiums by Matty Merritt (Morning Brew) It’s the first day of the World Cup, and in addition to sporting fresh new grass fields and extra tall beer cans, 11 stadiums across the US have scrubbed thousands of normal sponsors from their grounds. This expensive 'debranding' stems from...
Remember when this used to be a book blog? No? Well here are some thoughts on Traveling Practice by Yusuke Norishiro and transated by Takami Nieda.
BAIRD WHITLOCK AS AUTOLOCHUS: This Hebrew is son of the one God, the God of this far-flung tribe. And why shouldn’t God’s anointed appear here, among these strange people, in this strange place? Here, Gracchus, in this sundrenched land. Why should he not take this form — the form of an ordinary man? A man bringing...
Check out As in guillotine... for more. In which I briefly comment on the books I read each month, so a few years from now when I’m trying to remember one of them, I’ll be able to find it here. Since I’m a media omnivore, it also includes games, movies, and any other media of note that I engaged with. Do we have...
Tech companies keep making us embarrassed to be their customers. Maybe we don’t have to live like that.
This is a guest post by Yuki about some tricks we use for Lua code compression in our shared ComputerCraft pet project. I’ve written about how we adapted bzip2 for this purpose earlier; this story is an installment that takes place in the same context. If you want to read more stuff from her, here’s an Atom feed and...
Recently, I wrote about using Go's net/http/httptrace to get the per-phase timing breakdown for HTTP requests - DNS, TCP, TLS, and server processing. After writing about that package, I wanted to know what the same breakdown costs in Rust: whether the ecosystem has an equivalent, and what building one reveals about...
A disjointed post that slides into the future to mention an email digest I've been toying with. Currently Listening: Fensler Films “G.I. Joe PSA Compilation”Reply via email
By: Cory Doctorow | Rating: 5/5Cory has the amazing ability to say things in a way they completely resonate. His view on the current hype cycle and how it links to the thinking patterns of Big tech managers make a lot of sense. If only more decision makers could see beyond “oh, look, shiny” and dig a little deeper,...
My recipe for not hating myself consists of three elements: 1. Keep changing -- and by changing, I mean improving, and by improving, I don't mean "be more productive." I mean be a better person today than I was yesterday. Better means more patient, more kind, more loving. Not richer. 2. Practice gratitude. If I'm...
The US Department of Education has issued a new rule that makes the availability of Federal financial aid for students conditional on whether the programs the students are enrolled in meet an “earnings premium” criteria. According to a press release from the Department of Education, the “Student Tuition and...

It was ten, maybe eleven years ago. I was picking my oldest kid from school, he was 4 or 5. When he came out, I gave him a hug. We walked to the car, I buckled him into his car seat, and hugged him again. "Hey, dad, why are you hugging me so much?" "Because I love you so much. I want to hug you as much as I can,...
Last year, my citizenship ceremony just missed July 1 by a couple of weeks, so today is my first Canada Day as a Canadian citizen. I moved to Canada in 2013 and have since completed two postsecondary degrees, had three different careers, met and married the love of my life, and had many, many great life experiences....
Yesterday I visited the Home Building Association Bank in Newark, Ohio, a Louis Sullivan jewel box bank built in 1914. It’s currently owned by the Licking County Foundation (oh, grow up), which restored it at considerable cost over several years and reopened it to the public last fall. As you can see from the photo...
TLWR1: If you want to help Venezuela but don’t know how, donate to World Central Kitchen, share the link, or donate and share the link. ⦁ ⦁ ⦁ ⦁ ⦁ As a man constantly beset by overthinking-paralysis, I am struck in times of crisis with a powerful urge to help, but no ability to tell where my efforts (such as they...
ADHD maybe?I started 18-20 hours fasting x4 a week since end of March. Like magic, seriously like magic, for the last 2 months, I have been able to keep my house spotless clean (where I would often go a month without even dusting corners). The clothes are no longer rolling on the floor. Whatever is left about on my...
When something terrible happens, we reach for one of two boxes. The person was a monster — there were signs, there always are, and if we look hard enough we’ll find them. Or the person was ordinary and something in them broke, an inexplicable flip, a good man gone wrong. After the Cumbria shootings in 2010, the...
One of the Summer Sessions gigs that takes over one part of Bellahouston Park, last night saw Alanis Morissette headlining a line-up of amazing female led bands. Local Glasgow band Lucia and the Best Boys were already on stage when we arrived and delivered a stripped back set. First time hearing them and already...
The most popular link last time was this (now paywalled) Ask Molly column, with the Guardian review of my husband's new book, Lady C, second. As a barbecue hater, I enjoyed this.A Q&A with an interesting writer, who gives the only truly universal writing advice: "Don't try to match anyone else's routine; write...
After spending a few years in the realm of split ergonomic keyboards, I had mostly stopped paying attention to regular mechanical keyboards. Times sure have changed though; what used to require group buys, long waits, and a suspicious amount of disposable income is now showing up as off-the-shelf boards with gasket...

TL;DR: I've updated the Plankton Valhalla Bestiary. Did you know that Aether Mug has an older sister website? It's called Plankton Valhalla and I publish my essays there (go check it out!). I started it back in 2022 as a repository of explanations building up to a book I wanted to write, an ambitious book to...

July already, and my late mother's birthday (she'd have been 105 today) – and it's Canada Day, marking the anniversary of the Canadian Confederation, formed on this day in 1867. It was on Canada Day in 1980 that 'O Canada' became the country's official national anthem (and one of the best). Here is the one and only...
Perhaps we see something of the future when we look to the past. Chloe VS History, a YouTube channel, presents significant chapters of our history, hosted by a buoyant young woman named Chloe, a would-be time traveller, and seen through the lens of what is presumably a smartphone. While it’s moot point, the...

Since you landed on my blog, the chance is high you’re a tech-savvy web geek. If you publish stuff yourself, the chance is even higher that you came across standard.site, a set of lexicons to sync your writing with the AT Protocol. There’s a tonne of hype on the internet about the thing, and a bunch of friends...
Writing: The Textbook Case Part 4 Watching: Trainwreckords Playing: Portal & UT2K4 Tinkering: Keep reading... Same shit, different day(s). Remember when Marie Kondo was telling us all to ask if things "spark joy"? And we all lost our damn minds folding our underwear into perfect rectangles and arguing over whether we were allowed to own more than 35 books? Good times. Anyway, I got a new one for you. I decided to tackle the basement Room Where Stuff...

There were more lagoons on the coast of Venetia than what exists today, and even the lagoon landscapes were different. In fact, had it been left to nature, there would have been no lagoons today.
body{ h1 { display: none; }} .title h1{ display: block; } I made this blog to get back to the tiny scribbles, the little things that I could make, and let those little things make me.
I loved Lee Lai’s first graphic novel, Stone Fruit, so when I heard that her newest book had won a lot of awards I determined to keep my eye out for it at the library. I finally got it the other day, and it is really good. It’s about a cook in Montreal who is heading to a nervous breakdown (no spoilers; you see the...

Speaking of breaking search, an absolutely horrendous design decision I just spotted when using Bing Search: Yep, you saw this correctly: as you scroll, the ads (already pretty much masquerading as regular search results) actually get bigger to grab your attention. Jesus. I don’t know why I was reminded of this fav...
In this video demonstration I show the tools I use to write in French using Emacs. One is the built-in framework for input methods, which allows us to compose characters to express the full range of the language we are typing in (e.g. French or Greek). The other is a spell-checking package called jinx, which is...

The last few months have been intense, so I haven’t updated the newsletter, but here I am. I also haven’t been watching as many Chinese dramas as usual. I tried to finish Zhan Zhao Adventures (emphasis on try). The drama had everything going for it except, for some reason, tension and urgency. It’s not a terrible...

2026-07-01Hello!I photographed the Patrouille de France in the skies above Baltimore, a city in the US. Joan writes about how they encounter people that bring an "AI Note taker" to every catch-up and meeting. Recording every word, and transcribing it. (Or is it mutilate? You never know with those things!). And they feel unsafe to say they mind.
