Courageous Chief Warpath 1991 Genre: Hip-Hop The first time I called into Club Krush on WPRB was in 1991 to request a song I’d heard the previous week. It started with a pair of men (Bob Prescott and Cy Harrice) playing Russian Roulette. The first man explains the game, then says “I’ll go first.” He pulls the...
Driving has always been a study in contradictions. It’s liberation and confinement. Capability and diffidence. Exhilaration and terror. More terror than exhilaration, sometimes. My dad scared me silly when I first learned how to drive, so now all I hear is his shouting when I sit behind the wheel. I’ve been...
Following on from the initial release of Wasat yesterday, I've got a very basic proof-of-concept client up and running. So far, so good. Here it is loading up my own capsule on GemCities: There's a lot to do yet, it'll be some time before this turns into a public project, but having it at least load up a document...
Almost exactly a year ago I wrote about my new Garmin Forerunner 570 and how it compared to my previous 255. I partly bought it for some new features and metrics, but also because I was experiencing some rather annoying bugs on the 255. Chief of which was the fact that my alarm wouldn't go off most of the time. The...
Named slots are one of web components’ biggest superpowers ✨. Imagine a Button component with an optional icon; in Web Components we don’t need a separate Button and IconButton, a single Button component with <slot name="icon"> will do. Or a card component with a handful of predefined slots for image, title,...
This post was inspired by David Meissner's and Thomas Rigby's posts. Sometimes, I remember a bunch of stuff that I kept at home. But then, I either gave them or threw them away for different reasons. Even though these things are now gone, they still linger on my mind: Istenong Filipino → This is a small textbook for...
For those who subscribed to my RSS feeds you should, at some point, see a new title. It’s taken me far more tweaking and PHP hacking than I would’ve liked but it’s been irking me and now, I hope, it’s fixed. I’ve also removed some plugins around Webfingers, Webmentions, ActivityPub and the like, largely while I...
Ever since I was a kid, I would always eat the crust of the pizza first so I could have the yummy part after. This is how I know I'm #disciplined💪🏾
The American Philosophical Association (APA) has announced the winners of its Spring 2026 prizes. 2027 John Dewey Lectures Three annual lectures, one at each divisional meeting of the APA, given by a prominent and senior (typically retired) philosopher associated with that Division, who is invited to reflect broadly...
Anyone is capable of creating pictures more aesthetically pleasing than any renaissance artist. Cameras made sure of that. This led to the many attempts to redefine what art is, as it could no longer be defined as just a "pretty picture". In 1961, Piero Manzoni takes a dump in a can and calls it art. Merda d’artista...
Recently I wrote about mocking auth in CAP for a rapid local-first development loop that allows you to embrace auth design rather than defer it to later. In development mode, unless otherwise stated (i.e. unless you add appropriate annotations such as @readonly, @requires or @restrict), all resources are accessible...
I hate AI generated images. Not a bold or unique position, but to some surprise, I used to love them. Years ago. In 2020, I was publishing a niche webcomic involving aliens, and I wanted a unique and visually outstanding way to portray otherworldly background visuals- but to maintain my rapid publishing pace, I...
At this point it’s becoming increasingly clear that I can ask Cursor to read any of the implementations of my Conway and translate that into any other programming language that I want; this is what I’ve done last year with NASM, Scala, and Bash, and this year with Haskell. Yes, I have read Miran Lipovača’s...
The early life of musician Michael Jackson, from the discovery of his talent as the lead of the Jackson Five to the artist whose creative ambition fueled a pursuit to become the biggest entertainer in the world. It’s hard to make something about Michael Jackson without falling into controversy, or falling flat....
I'm greatly enjoying Piers Brendon's Eminent Edwardians, finding it rather more agreeable reading than Lytton Strachey's Eminent Victorians. Reading about the egregious press baron Lord Northcliffe brought home to me what a very Northcliffean organ his creation, the Daily Mail, still is – or at least was when I...
Gentle A gentler world begins in the way you touch your heart. Be soft with the light inside you. Caress your body with this breath. God is nothing else but the place where the sun comes up in your chest. You are the glimmering destination. You are the golden honey daubed on the bread of the ordinary. Whatever is...
This is an excerpt from a private exchange. I am sharing it with the permission of my correspondent, without disclosing their identity. I was wondering how do you have the courage to become who you are today, you know, making speech and talk to different people. I have to do a presentation next week, and I find that...
Here’s a big interactive essay I just finished. The theme: What does it take to build interfaces that truly allow for fast operation – and why that matters. If you like the interactive details posts here on Unsung, the essay is kind of a concentrated dose of all that. You can technically read it on the phone, but...
I recently discovered that Bubbles offers the option to embed a widget on your website, to show how often your post has been upvoted and also to nudge people to go upvote in the first place. I'm not sure if I really want this on my blog and if it really has any kind of benefit... The idea behind it of course is to...
Not much about work - in fact, nothing at all about work - but quite a lot of links, for those of you who are link-leaning.
Today is a rest day for me from watching the World Cup matches. There are “meh” teams playing today at a decent hour for me: Czech Republic vs South Africa (Group A) – 5pm BST Switzerland vs Bosnia-Herzegovina (Group B) – 8pm BST Canada vs Qatar (Group B) – 11pm BST I’ll catch the scores and move on, me thinks. It’s...
I run Tailscale on my laptops, phone and NAS, and wanted to add an exit node so I could route traffic through my own connection when I’m out and about. The obvious place to put it was the NAS, since it’s already always on, but the NAS also holds everything I’d least like exposed if something went wrong. Making it...
Conversations that never took place between people who never met. Video edited by Jonas Hollerup Helle using existing interviews, and I think that's one of his best. Reply by email
I sent this email to all workshop attendees. It made sense to publish it as a post as well. Thank you for attending the “Back to Basics: Build Your Own LLM from Scratch” session. It was great to see so much curiosity and many questions in the room, the feedback many of you shared echoed this sentiment. I’m really...
For forty years, the best empirical work on policy responsiveness has produced two findings that do not fit together. The first: when the preferences of low- and middle-income Americans diverge from those of the affluent, the relationship between what the less advantaged want and what government does is...
Suppose you had a pull request for SQLite. “Hey, I’ve got this new feature for SQLite. Here’s the pull request.” When you want me to pull that into the tree, you say, “Oh, it’s free.” No, it’s not free. What you’re doing is asking me —...
2026-06-18Hello! This photo was the result of a collaboration with WikiPortraits, although not in the way one might expect.I've worked with WikiPortraits before, but this time, I was able to try a piece of every part of a long process before I'm able to take a photo. I got the idea and recommendation to photograph...
I collect cool, interesting links spread all over the web and share them here every Thursday. Hope you enjoy! More of them in the archive. Town Square. June 2026. Leeds to Bradford. Comfort break at Newlay’s Abbey Inn over, we resumed Day 2 of the Cask Camino with a route from posh Leeds to almost posh Bradford. Today’s “Identify the bird” is a tough one. Lots of interesting canal traffic, including the Absolute Madness tour boat on its way to a nostalgia festival...
In which I challenge myself to draw a pokemon every day until I stop Tues 06/16/2026 - Torkoal Generally I like turtle and tortoise style pokemon but something about this just rubs me the wrong way. Maybe the whole coal thing? A symbol of industrialization that has caused undue harm to the world as a result? Nahhhhh...
Liked Daily News Stuff 18 June 2026 by Pixy Misa (ai.mee.nu) Amodei is every bit as much of a weasel as Sam Altman. And while Altman is a sociopath and a compulsive liar, Amodei is something much worse: He's whiny. I look forward to reading Pixy Misa’s Daily News Stuff posts (seven days a week), which feature links...
Problem statement: prek can’t clone a repo: that lives in an internal (private) GitHub repo — https:// clone fails without credentials. I forked my personal pre-commit-hooks into an org-owned repo and updated all our .pre-commit-config.yaml files to point at it: - repo: https://github.com/<org>/pre-commit-hooks rev:...
Apple is putting stronger AI image tools directly into everyday devices. That is good for creativity. It is also going to make trust harder.Apple says Photos will use more powerful image models for editing, with AI-adjusted photos automatically including a hidden SynthID watermark. Apple also says Image Playground can...
