Go 1.27 is getting a goroutine leak detector in runtime/pprof. The proposal was accepted in April. A few common goroutine leaks # A goroutine leaks when it blocks forever on a channel or a lock that nothing will ever release, so it lingers for the life of the process. I’ve been using uber-go/goleak to catch them in...
So you know how we have the incubator setup? Well, unbeknownst to me, my wife gave one of our broody hens a cluch of Guinea fowl eggs to sit on a month ago. She just sent me this... June 2026. Leeds to Newlay (er, Leeds). I bet you thought the Cask Camino had stalled at the first hurdle lock, didn’t you ? Never underestimate Mrs RM’s tenacity and desire for blog views; Saturday saw us parked up at Apperley Bridge station (free !), 3 minutes before the train to Kirkstall Forge from which we’d...
I'd open my RSS reader after a few days away and find a hundred unread posts. I'd mark them all as read. That was my reading habit. After reading Jon's post about saying goodbye to RSS, it stayed with me. Someone's writings had become noise I treated no better than a teenager scrolling past a picture on Facebook...
This week, the new Commodore under CEO Peri Fractic (actor turned Youtuber Christian Simpson) announced the release of their latest product, a flip phone they called the Callback. And people online went nuts. Some love it, but most seem to hate it and the feedback has been overwhelmingly (very) negative. I have some...

By: Martijn Kitzen, Tim Sweijs | Rating: 1/5Sadly disappointing. Authors spend a lot of time vaguely skimming over the changing patterns of war and then vaguely make a point of that we don't know what the next war is going to be. Sad. Avoid.
It’s been more than a minute since I’ve read anything by Courtney Milan; it’s not that I don’t have several of her books in ye old TBR, but that I save her stuff for cases of emergency, and then they get buried. But here’s Miz Wendy’s TBR Challenge for June, and then there’s ::gestures at the world:: so here goes...
“The aim is not to keep everything exactly as it was before gen AI took off. That would be both impossible and undesirable. The aim is to preserve the parts of philosophical education that are still worth preserving while changing the surrounding infrastructure enough to make that possible.” That’s David Bourget, a...

I have one watch that ticks louder than the rest, a soft pink piece given to me a few years ago. It's not my daily watch, but I use it enough for it to earn a place on my desk instead of in the jewelry box. In the quiet hours, when I'm alone with my thoughts, I hear it: nothing else in the world, just me and the...
No more waking up to social media first thing. Social media. What a phrase. I open my eyes in the morning and don’t immediately see everything I missed yesterday. But I also miss the news that some friend-of-a-friend’s girlfriend’s dog is doing better after all. You wake up and there you are, at the mercy of your...
I often wake up with a random song as an earworm – and now I note them down for your enjoyment. (This one I really can’t explain. It’s not my kind of music. I can’t remember hearing it anywhere lately. And yet here we are.) This morning it was Senza Una Donna by Zucchero and Paul Young – and frankly, I hope I can...
I've long thought Mt. Adams was a bohemian enclave, with steep streets like San Francisco and expansive views of the city. It's good to see it erupt in color and light.Currently Listening: Kesha “Boots & Boys”Reply via email
June 17, 2026 I got a notice the other day that iA Writer version 8 is out. The new Command Palette caught my eye, and after checking it out, it’s definitely handy. I actually just wrote about how much I use the Command Palette in Drafts. A command palette probably won't be enough to make me switch back to iA Writer...
Check out As in guillotine... for more. I’ll be putting on my “occasional journalist” hat again next week, working with the excellent Words & Money team to help cover the ALA 2026 Annual Conference in Chicago! I’m still working on my overall schedule, but I’ve already picked out a few highlights that I’m planning to...
Good Internet only started publishing, both online and in print, about a year ago. News that the founders have decided to cease publication indefinitely is sad for for the IndieWeb/SmallWeb community, whom the magazine supported. Running an online magazine is a major undertaking on its own. A print version is...

Until now, Apple has kept Apple Intelligence — the suite of artificial intelligence tools baked into its operating systems — entirely optional. If you don’t want it, you can simply skip it during a new device setup or when updating the system. That show of respect for its customers may change with iOS/macOS 27....
Aborted after page 126, total of 395 pages. Even though I was interested in the topic of the book, somehow the story did not catch me. I am not sure if this relates to the translation or the original, but some parts had a weird writing style. And sadly I could not connect with any of the characters. Repeatedly there...
Teddy’s Last Selfie Teddy Ballgame, aka Ted, aka Teddy, aka Theodore J. Dog, crossed the rainbow bridge yesterday. We found Teddy at Petsmart where the Orange County Humane Society was running an adoption event in 2017. One of our senior dogs had recently passed on and the other was really struggling without her...
As long as you keep secrets and suppress information, you are fundamentally at war with yourself…The critical issue is allowing yourself to know what you know. That takes an enormous amount of courage. ― Bessel A. van der Kolk What we live through, what we experience, how we navigate a life that is one unknown after...
Existing biographies of Bob Dylan are not what they claim to be. Instead, they tell the life story of one Robert Allen Zimmerman, born in Duluth, Minnesota in 1941, and raised in the nearby town of Hibbing. When, twenty years later, Robert Zimmerman moved to New York City and became a professional musician — first a...
The vibeThis was a very Apple-heavy week. WWDC26 happened, I watched the keynote, I put developer betas on devices I actually use because apparently I enjoy chaos, and then Siri AI sent my security brain down several rabbit holes. Add in summer heat showing up way too early and a great F1 weekend, and it was a full...
A currency does three separate things. In 2026 they started moving in opposite directions at once — and the job everyone watches is the one that matters least. In the first quarter of 2026, three measurements of the dollar’s standing pointed three different ways in the same window. Its share of the world’s official...
In a move which more or less surprises nobody, I am retiring PETI, effective immediately. There are reasons for this that go past simple boredom with the project, but I know it’s something of a sad announcement, so let’s lay them out. The Project Has Run Out of “Interesting Unknowns” in Firmware Most of the PETI...
I can't remember how and where I saw it, but just over a week ago I ran into Project Gemini. Somehow I've never read or seen anything about this before, which is pretty wild considering it's been on the go for around seven years now. As I read up on it I got more and more intrigued. I had the urge to do... something...
In 2019, I started using DOOM emacs as my main emacs “distribution”. A decision which I figured I’d stick with for many years to come. In late 2023, I switched back to neovim for some time, and finally came back to the light early last year. However, we all knew this day would come. I have been bitten by the vanilla...
[P]introduction Despite having “heard” about Pinterest in the past, it was not until 2020 that I came to (sort of) understand what it was. I created a Pinterest account for The New Leaf Journal in 2020 because our SEO plugin at the time, Yoast SEO, offered an admin menu option for configuring Pinterest Webmaster...
Seventeen Days In, Here are some Blog Posts I liked Recently! Photo unrelated, I just like having photos on my blog posts. For this entry in the series I have picked a song of composer Manos Chatzidakis, as it is performed by the acclaimed Nana Mouskouri: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Lp6f_T1z_o. This is a wonderful performance. Even the breeze adds to the magic of the show. Below are the lyrics, my translation of them, and further...
Biological naturalists (e.g., Godfrey-Smith, Block, Searle, Seth) suggest that computers aren't made of the right kind of stuff to be conscious. Consciousness, they suggest, requires a biological substrate that computers lack. It's not always clear, however, exactly what property animal biologies have that computers...
It is not merely a matter of growing bones and growing responsibilities, this business of growing up, this unfinishable project of becoming ourselves. It is less like the evolutionary diagram of the upright ape than like a Russian nesting doll, our prior selves not outgrown but integrated, forever dwelling inside...
The account of the Lombard conquest of the remaining parts of Byzantine Venetia in the 600s — from "Historia Langobardorum" by Paul the Deacon.
Since my original launch post for syntaqlite, I’ve been quietly working away on it in the background. A lot of the work has been fixing correctness bugs which I discovered as I integrated it into production as the parser for PerfettoSQL in the Perfetto trace processor: as I wrote previously, this has been my dream...
2026-06-17Hello! I lied. Have another photo from the Acadia National Park. It's just too good! This time, it's the early sunrise. Even at four in the morning, the sky had brightened enough to walk around outside without needing a street lamp or flashlight. It was crazy. This is me returning to my minimalist...
Anubis is about to get WebAssembly-based proof of work checks so that administrators can use a non-SHA256 proof of work method to protect their websites. Part of the implementation goals of this work is that the check logic is defined in one place on both client and server. The client and server will then hook into...
There's a scene in Angeline Boulley's novel Firekeeper's Daughter where the main character, an Ojibwe teenager, describes her coming-of-age "berry fast." She loves berries of all kinds, so she committed to not eating any for an entire year. She otherwise lived a normal life - going to events where berries were...
My interest in upvotes peaked while reading small cypress’ blog. So, I went searching: “add upvote indieweb” using Startpage, IndieWeb’s BurgeonLab.com was listed top five. Naty S’ guide, specific for Hugo, “How to Add … Upvote/Like Button…” also goes into detail on the inner workings of iine, the privacy-conscious...
My sister-in-law gave me this espresso cup. It’s pretty cool. I don’t usually get involved in the internet reply-fest du jour, but this time I thought I’d give it a go. It involves coffee, just in case you wondered. BTW: I’ve used a bit of the antipodean vernacular in this post. You have been warned. There was a bit...
I am geek adjacent. I lie probably slap bang in the middle of two extremes; the uber-geek/dev coder who knows internet coding and all the web server dark arts like the back of their hand, and the ‘Facebook is the internet’ person who uses the flash on their phone when taking a picture of a landscape in the dark. I...

Many file formats are suitable for representing e-books, but most are complex, and many are proprietary. This article puts forward a proposal for a new format, somewhat like EPUB, but hugely simplified.
Back when I purchased my Nintendo Switch in 2023, there were only a few titles I cared about trying on it. Among the first games I purchased at the time was Hades, released in 2020, developed by Supergiant Games. Hades had already made a name for itself, as a title that redefined the genre and the medium, in manners...
Bill Walton was a one-man Venn diagram. He was a two-time NCAA champion at UCLA under the legendary John Wooden. A two-time NBA champion. A Basketball Hall of Famer. An inveterate winner whose high school and college teams, at one point, won an absurd 142 consecutive games. The six-foot-eleven redhead was also an...
Since reading Naomi Klein’s Doppelganger and its parts about Covid and fitness influencer culture a while ago (especially the chapter "The Far Right Meets the Far Out"), I cannot help but see that “Pinterest clean girl fitness and fruit bowl gua sha yoga mat pilates in the forest” content as covert white supremacy...
True fulfillment is chaff in the wind To the seeded analytical mind Which inveterately labours to abscind The endless emotional experience of human kind
There are tons of small bugs around. Occasionally, there is a really big one. In the “oh my god, I can’t believe it” category, here’s a story of the game Yakuza 6. A few months ahead of launch, in February 2018, Sega released a free playable demo of the game. The demo gave access to the first level, and then blocked...
