There’s a moment, watching a documentary about a couple whose communication register is foreign to your own, when you reach for the obvious explanation. They talk a lot about feelings. They narrate their interior lives — what was the big moment of your day? — in a way nothing like the terse, decisive exchanges that...
I have no big struggles at the moment. Weeks are flowing into one another and every week feels roughly the same, with small deviations. Months fly by in the blink of an eye. I am mostly healthy and can pursue my hobbies in my free time. I have a great social circle and I am blessed with wonderful friends. I feel...
Here’s an idea for an original board game about 160000 samurai fighting it out. Each samurai is roughly the size of a lentil. Hideyori’s samurai are made of wood and Tokugawa’s samurai are made out of metal. The metal pieces should not be magnets themselves but magnets should attract them to more easily separate the...
Replied to Where do blogs go when they die? by Robert Birming (Robert Birming) If you're going to remove your blog, at least save the content, even if you think it's crap. If you want to remove specific posts, turn them into drafts instead of deleting them. ... If you're going to bury your blog, at least have the...
Yep, I definitely won't buy a bigger #3DPrinter. 🫣 Thanks for reading this post via RSS. RSS is ace, and so are you. ❤️ You can reply to this post by email, or leave a comment.
Site UpdatesLast week I added a feature using Hugo’s data/ folder to store cached Mastodon post data as .json files for my Mastodon embeds. When Hugo builds the site, it doesn’t have to connect to the internet to fetch each post’s details. 👍 I created a new /style-guide page last week which received some positive...
I am one of those who prefers to get something done in the span of a day or else whatever I publish will need way more work on my part, to make sure the tone stays consistent and the flow of what I write makes sense. I actually write most of these posts in a single big text file that I then copy paste to a final...
I don't mind charging for Bluetooth on my headphones because they have a headphone jack. That's part of my personal problem with Bluetooth the device is useless without it's charger. That's exactly what happened when I lost the case for my Soundcore p20i's. I was going to buy a new pair, but I learned that Bluetooth...
WWDC is this week, so of course I have been busy watching the keynote, downloading the new betas, and getting distracted by all the new Apple things. But before I get too deep into that, here are the weekly notes for last week. The vibeA pretty low-key week, and honestly, that is not a bad thing. No huge updates. No...
Looking north from Hermosa Beach at the Manhattan Beach Pier and El Segundo, a view I've photographed many times before. Gentle waves break on the shore.
As I peruse the thought pieces already spewing forth after the latest round of Apple’s announcements, one thought is blooming in my mind. What cost (mostly) on-device AI? A while ago I read something about the energy usage of an AI query, I can’t find that article now but some searches suggest the following: To...
Tangentially related to the previous post. Data recently published by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) suggests some Australians felt better off during the COVID pandemic, despite lockdowns and other restrictions on their movements, than they do today. In 2026 people are dealing with cost-of-living...
Friends didn't need a reason to rent out a pool for the afternoon, but since it was Joe's birthday, things leveled up.Currently Listening: half•alive “still feel.”Reply via email
Blogs. The curated, written looking glass into someone's perspective. That's what I love about them. Blogs. Waking up in the morning and spending a little time reading over the carefully chosen words of another human being. Truly astounding. Blogs. Poured time and energy, someone distilling themselves into this...
A few weeks ago, I went to visit my mother, who lives in northern New South Wales, Australia. Tweed Heads is like the retirement capital of the universe. Maybe like Florida, for those American readers, but much more low-key. (I am not sure where one retires to in the UK, as all the beaches appear to be pebbly, which...
Now and then I’ll remember my elderly co-juror who, in another life, had run an adult cinema and, in this one, disruptively corrected the prosecutor when he misquoted Star Wars. He was one of the last of the Porno Cowboys, maybe THE last; the snaps on his shirt-pockets older than unleaded gas, his mustache a furred...
When I came back to blogging after years of being in and out of it, I did so mostly because I wanted to leave social media behind. Sure, some people never stopped. There are people who have been blogging for twenty-plus years while the rest of us were tweeting away. I admire (and envy) them. I wish I were one of...
Share your favourite (Tiny) websites, sign-up for when the voting opens, build your own! I’m a big fan of Tiny Awards. Not because it’s a competition, but because it’s an excuse to celebrate cool, small web projects, those that are living proof we can build a cool, quirky and sustainable web together, outside the...
Last weekend’s sore throat and feeling parched after a very warm cycle ride turned into something else on Monday. It started as a head cold and then later in the week worked its way down into my chest. I didn’t have any kind of fever; it felt as though I was running at about 85%, enough to be a little frustrating...
1. In last year’s essay at Tedium, Ernie Smith investigated the rise and fall of screensavers, those pieces of software that peaked in the 1990s, originally meant to prolong the life of your display by kicking in after a period of inactivity, but eventually becoming “self-contained art projects.” As it always...
May 2026. Loftus. North Yorkshire. On the last day of Sunday I decided it could wait no longer. Ibo’s Bunker must be ticked before June. For a third time this year I took the campervan to the mining villages of the north coast, parked up overnight across from Loftus Police Station, and hoped. And there it was, right...
Me he...

Winter Camping and the Four Requisites mtift Tue, 06/09/2026 - 08:21 My daughter is off at grad school now, and she left a few tubs of her things in our basement. Over the weekend she came home to sort through them, and somehow the whole family ended up down there, each of us digging through our own boxes. I spent a...
A quick update to blogmore.el. Having recently added series support to BlogMore it made sense that I then add a quick way of adding a post to a series in the package. You can, of course, set a new one too, but the idea here (as with categories and tags) is that you can quickly find back an existing series and add...
So I got that little zine marketplace site to work locally on my machine. Got it hooked up to the stripe sandbox stuff to test payments and it all worked just fine. I added a bunch of dummy zines to test the checkout and user reading section. I have the domain ready, I'm just contemplating wether or not to make it...
The first minute of the opening track, “As You Lie There”, sounds like a false start. Once the electric guitar and the drums kick in, The Boys of Dungeon Lane is tightly wound and supremely well produced. The lyrics are as naive as ever, but that doesn’t mean they’re not effective. “Down South” is a poignant homage...
2026-06-09First, a short addendum for yesterday's article: I was being intentional about my casual attitude for changing my name and building a new life. If I moved to Britain as was my original intent many seasons ago (a story for another time, perhaps?) I would have changed my name — not to Maria Roland, but to...
As someone with a couple too many hours in Hearts of Iron IV, here are my thoughts on what the sequel should be. What I don't want Pops, markets and consumption Paradox has added consumables markets to all of their latest games, and unlike alot of loud voices, I don't disagree with that turn. Trade is a huge driver...
Anbernic sent me an RG DS to review. It’s a clamshell Android handheld designed to evoke the Nintendo DS, running Android 14 on a Rockchip RK3568 with dual 4-inch screens. At around $95 (roughly £75), it sits in the same budget bracket as the Mangmi Air X I reviewed last year, but where that was a capable...
I spoke at Microsoft Build last week! A lot! In lieu of redoing work, here’s just a handy little link dump clipped from my latest newsletter issue: I spoke in the opening keynote (demoing the GitHub Copilot App and a new technology called Rayfin) and in a silly session about vibe coding (in this one, I implemented...
Software engineering as we used to know it is dead. AI condensed the code-writing step of the process from days to minutes. Engineers found themselves having many tasks on their plates, running many agents in parallel. They are burning out tokens and themselves at the same speed. However, I argue that the approach...

Quick aside: My sister has a Bear blog called Notes on Making where she writes about knitting, wool dying, pattern design, and shows off what she's created. If you're into wool and crafting, take a look. It's really cool! I'm currently reading What I talk about when I talk about running by Haruki Murakami (thanks...
A celebration of gender rebels throughout history In a weird twist of things I'm never quite sure how to explain, a while back my brother became the executive director of the Vallejo Naval Museum; now from its name alone you'd think that this museum is predominantly about like, naval stuff. Boats. Navy history,...
I’ve been drawing a line for ages here. My AI usage policy, quoting Derek Sivers: I have never ever used AI to generate text in place of my “voice”. […] nothing claiming to be written by me is written by an AI. Likewise, I said. Then in “new blog post via Claude Code” I held the line one more time: the LLM...
At Homebrew Website Club this evening we had a conversation about how to encourage people to make things together using the web. This could mean writing a blog post with someone, responding to someone’s blog post to continue a conversation, contributing to a wiki, creating a list of links, and more. There are so...
