I missed two days of Pook-Emu Bee links. But it is not all bad: Now we have even more links from around the web to choose from. 1. Why I Built Bubbles (Ben at Bubbles Blog. March 26, 2026.) I’ve been an RSS obsessive for years. Hundreds of feeds, hand-picked one by one. But RSS only shows you sources you already...
This is a copy of an issue that I just created in the Nominatim repository. Sadly my skills in Python (and my knowledge of the OSM data model) aren’t good enough to poke around in the code on my own to figure out what is happening. Reverse Geocoding in the Ho Chi Minh City center return wrong city What did you...
I was surprised to learn that Age of Empires II is actively developed to this day. I remember the original game, subtitled The Age of Kings, being published during the reign of Edward Longshanks. It was followed by a comprehensive expansion pack, called The Conquerors, shortly thereafter to critical acclaim. A...
2026-06-04Hello! It's been a while since I did some automobile photography. Lucky for me, the annual car show was being hosted nearby and I walked up to it without even realizing it. Pure coincidence that I happened across a big car show on the day I went to this town.A lot of crowds were forming around cars that...

Tomorrow I'll be leading an AI coding session at NYU ITP Camp. I wasn't planning to run one this year, but during the first few days of camp I found myself having the same conversation over and over again: things get messy fast when you let the vibes completely take over a codebase.Looking back at the AI coding...
A significant portion of the population in the USA still thinks of Reaganomics as certified fact rather than a largely discredited theory. By this mindset the engine of our economy requires people to strive for a ton of money. A rising tide lifts all boats and all that. First, I got to wondering, were US...
May 2026. Elsecar. Barnsley. Whenever I get bored of being at home, generally after being in the house more than 3 hours, I’ll walk down t’station and hop on the first train stopping somewhere I haven’t been for a year or two. Inevitably, that Cross Country service will be late so I’ll catch a different one...
In which I challenge myself to draw a pokemon every day until I stop The work continues! Let's take a look at a few pokemon: Tues 06/02/2026 - Yveltal When I started this project I knew it wasn't gonna be all dittos and simple line art creatures, I knew the legendaries and ultra beasts and more complex designs would...
Rafael Nadal at his best was incredible. The elegance of Roger Federer too. The dominance of Serena Williams and Novak Djokovic in their prime was equally impressive. Still, someone amazing in his own right, and far less known, is Mansour Bahrami. A successful doubles player hailed as "the Trick Shot King", he isn't...
Being chronically understaffed is a nightmare I can't seem to wake from. Not only did I have to close last night, but here I am, back before dawn, opening. I must have forgotten to lock the back door after closing, because when I walk into the bar, a bear is making its way through the garnishes, one jar at a...
I don't enjoy editing my photos, never have. The part I like about photography is being out with my camera. The part I don't like is coming home to Lightroom and having a billion options to make my photos look a different way. For years, that made me use my Sony camera less, because I knew that every photo I took...
Liberals about AI consciousness hold that we might soon (if we haven't already) create genuinely conscious AI systems. Conservatives about AI consciousness hold that AI consciousness remains in the distant future if it's possible at all. According to the Leapfrog Hypothesis, the first conscious AI will not have...
It’s almost time for the Monaco Grand Prix, the most famous, and my least favourite, Grand Prix of the year, but then, I’ve been watching F1 for a long time so maybe I’ve been spoilt. F1 is increasingly popular these days, and whilst the Apple produced F1 movie was entertaining (if nonsense), it’s safe to […]Thanks...
We have updated Uma’s playlist on her radio. It’s no baby rhymes now. It has carefully selected songs. Currently, U2026 has songs from Kannada, Malayalam, English, and Italian. I have heard all of them and read lyrics as well to make sure it’s friendly. It is tough to filter out songs for toddlers, especially those...
Hong Kong Open Source Conference 2026I’m attending an in-person event this weekend related to my one of my passions for the very first time; open source! Came across the HKOSCon on Mastodon via @sammyfung, the founder of Open Source Hong Kong. I’m not sure what to expect but I’m excited! It’s held in an area of HK...
IPv6 is weird. One of the more strange parts of the standard is that every interface's link local addresses are in fe80::whatever. If you have a machine with two network interfaces, both of them will be in fe80::, so if you have a packet destined to fe80::4, how do you disambiguate it? The answer is you use IPv6...

One of my favourite parts of writing – and, by extension, blogging – is that I can, in words, capture a little bit of a day, and keep a little record of the moment. Each post can be a bookmark to a memory, and also part of the story of my life.I love taking notes I walk around my neighbourhood. Today, I wrote down...
Many of my friends have recently started getting involved in blogging or podcasting, in what I would argue is a larger trend towards shifting away from Instagram photos into longer form content. Some are looking to collect payment so that they can dedicate more time to something they are passionate about. Looking...
By: Dimko Zhluktenko | Rating: 3/5His personal tale of what he did when the Russians invaded. Very inspiring, sadly a bit short. It also cuts off before he actually joins the military. Dimko does give a great overview of the operation and reasoning behind his amazing charity. The signed edition was quite expensive,...
Bi Zhi is a time traveler from the future on a mission to retrieve artifacts tied to the death of his close friend Ziyi, from ancient China. After the time traveller Bi Zhi gets drunk, he accidentally drags a hapless young man, Beilu, through time. Both wake up thinking it was a wild dream. But Bi Zhi meets Beilu...

An American friend inquires – as well he might – what 'a Herbert Spencer of a cold' might mean. As I told him, I'm probably the only person on the planet who still uses the phrase (to universal bafflement). I came across it years ago in, I think, a novel by H.G. Wells (Love and Mr Lewisham?), where a character says...

Toni Morrison once lamented that people have been taught to think of a book as a mirror, when it ought to be a door. All great storytelling — be it a novel or a poem, a film or a song — enchants us precisely because it swings open the door to a world distinctly other than our own, whose very otherness clarifies...
In 2021 and 2022, product manager Steven Sinofsky wrote a… …first-person account of what I saw at the PC revolution from the perspective of joining Microsoft as a newly hired software design engineer fresh from graduate school working on developer tools, through my time as a program manager and ultimately leading...
I’m psyched for @incanus Justin Miller’s presentation tonight at Xcoders on “Swift Result Builders Case Study: Parsing.” I like writing parsers, and I’m very curious about Swift result builders. Should be a good one! See this post on the Xcoders blog for more details about the talk and for when and where to be.
I’ve bought a year of the Pro plan. At the end of that year I will do a thorough reassessment, and will not renew unless I can (a) identify significant ongoing needs, (b) continue to believe that Anthropic is not quite as corrupt as the other AI kaiju, and (b) reconcile my use with the energy and water demands of...
I've had my old website since... 2006 or so. And this website now since 2023. And I've been writing articles on both since. I figured, it's time to look back at some articles, especially the ones I still enjoy.
My exercise journey dates back about 14 years when I first started running. The goal was very typical to lose weight. Looking back, I'm not sure I succeeded but over time my goals changed as did my view on exercise.I was probably in my best shape somewhere around the beginning of the pandemic, back then I used to...
This old Metropolitan Line train at Chesham is nearly ready to go, with its cargo of parched weeds. We’ve properly entered Phil Collins season, with extremely hot temperatures dominating the week. My morning walk from Euston to the City of London is now on hiatus until either (a) it cools down again, or (b) the Tube...
It's Just Broken: Oh WordPressby Pup On TechIn a recent post, the Pup ON Tech perfectly captures the absolute nightmare that is building a self-hosted WordPress site. What starts as a simple VPS setup quickly devolves into a bloated mess of heavy themes, dozens of conflicting plugins, and rigid page builders. By the...
If you are reading this, your HTTP request has entered my real life abode. Admittedly via a Cloudflare tunnel, because CGNAT is a bitch, but another step towards digital autonomy. But what does that mean in practice? Well... Higher latency Worse uptime More points of failure Worse security But it's more fun this...

May Intro While The New Leaf Journal’s birthday falls on April 27, I like to consider May this project’s birthday month. That was part of why most of our sixth birthday celebration this year fell in May. With May now in the books, let us review the month that was at The New Leaf Journal and related projects. May at...
The inhabitants of this town being called together on the recommendation of our General Assembly, to signify our minds on the great point of independence on Great Britain, think fit to instruct you on that head. The Ministry of that kingdom having formed a design of subjecting the Colonies to a distant,...
The story of Lord of the Flies is known to almost anyone, present company excluded. I may have seen the movie decades ago, but the memory was hazy. There were some kids, some island, and something bad happens. I was half-right. Lord of the Flies can be read through a few different lenses. On the surface it's, what...
Another month, another Game Changers review; with this, we’re almost done, and what a ride has it been! Beware: rape culture in ice hockey and sports generally; widespread misogyny in sports, and homophobia in professional hockey; protagonist with a congenital heart defect; mention of severe childhood illnesses in a...
Companion to the Seat series. The series argued that no contentful verdict comes from nowhere, that the only honest residue of neutrality is declaration, and that a community which grounds its authority in a method hides the one choice the method cannot make. This essay runs that result on the machine — and finds...

Something that has proven beneficial for me, as an ADHDer, is to isolate activities. My brain works better in single-task mode, and I stay calm and more focused. I'm also more productive when I do these things, but that's not really the point. The point is that they make me calmer. I'm relaxed when I get shit done....
well, not exactly a normal anime recommendation but close. Still so different that even people who normally skip anime stuff can give it a look. Really, a small piece of man made animation that deserves some minutes of your time if you haven’t heard of it yet. milky☆subway was made by yohei kameyama. he first did a...
BlogMore has been bumped to v2.38.0. This release includes a small cosmetic change to the stats page, and also adds a fairly big cosmetic feature with some comprehensive control. First, the change to the stats page: here I've changed the formatting of numbers a little so that numbers that are in the thousands or...
I always share stuff from Argentina, but after listening to this song you might want to head towards Brazil instead. I’ve been listening to it in a loop for the last few days. It’s like having a streaming service of sunny weather in your ears. I thought you could use some sun, too. It struck a chord in me. It made...
