A section of trail in SwitzerlandMay was a big month! The highlight was a cycling trip around Lake Konstanz, passing through Konstanz, Bregenz Austria, Stein am Rhein in Switzerland, and Meersburg.A farm in Bodenseeufer, GermanyWe passed a lot of operating agriculture, growing apples, strawberries, and other...
I still believe in patching. Let me get that out of the way first.Patching is one of the most basic security controls we have, and it is basic for a reason. If a vendor ships a fix for a vulnerability that attackers are using in the wild, applying that fix is usually the cleanest way to close the door. No amount of...
Capstone to the Seat series — a worked example of why the seat matters. The payoff of refusing the view from nowhere is not that it dissolves other people’s confidence. It is the discipline that tells a staked position from one built so the world can’t touch it. A disagreement gets answered, and the answer is not...
Good links I have collected recently. Metro Pretzel M is for… Metro (Calvert typeface and the Nexus Tyne and Wear public transport visual identity), this blog is a lovely treasure trove of transport facts. This particular post focuses on Margaret Calvert’s type design for the Metro and how concepts from it were...

Search engine DuckDuckGo has experienced a noticeable surge in users in recent weeks, says Rebecca Bellan, writing for TechCrunch. Many of these new arrivals are concerned about Google’s proposals to significantly change its search experience, through the use of AI, something I think is being called AI Mode....
Today I captured A Sailor Beetle, A Four-spotted Plant Bug(?) and A Yellow Dung Fly. These aren't macro images, I don't actually own a macro lens, but my 40-150mm lets me get reasonably close. It was a little tricky to get these in focus, what with them being so small, and a persistent breeze to battle with. I did...
There’s been a recent, fundamental cultural shift in how we process sports narratives. For a long time we relied on loud talking heads on tv to manufacture bombastic outrage or frenzied hysteria, or face-painted fan warriors to fuel deep tribal aversions. But now sports has been financialized and commodified by the...
“What we do in life echoes in eternity.” Maximus Decimus Meridius When I look around, the hardest thing to find is a person who cares. I see people doing the bare minimum, value-extracting, and overtly ‘screwing over’ their fellow man to “get ahead”. But, more than this, I seen an overwhelming comfort with...
I collect cool, interesting links spread all over the web and share them here in daily posts. Hope you enjoy! More of them in the archive. How diamonds are made? An interesting story on a beautifully designed website. Tip: hold your finger or cursor over the 3D diamond to move it around. It’s time to talk about my...
There have been many incidents related to CBSE (and NEET).. Nisarga has written a responsible, well-written tech disclosure blog post about it, followed by Sarthak on the breakage of process and rules. Bugs happen in large systems. But public exam systems need a much higher standard of transparency, correction, and...
I have been thinking a lot about categories over the last week or so. It started by Thomas sharing the work he has been doing to build a category index page, whose design I love. I started to realise that I like to put a lot of my blog posts in one of few categories: moments of joy go in one category, slices of life...
I started sending postcards to people again recently. A while back when I got my typewriter, I signed up for TypePals.com and started snail mailing folks. It was a lot of fun; I wrote a bit about it here. Recently I decided to sign up for a postcrossing.com. Postcrossing is a postcard exchange site with a huge...
Book Overflow is "a long-form discussion podcast for software engineers" and one of the shows to which I'm subscribed. The recent episode 118 is one in the series where Carter and Nathan discuss the book Learning Domain-Driven Design: Aligning Software Architecture and Business Strategy by Vlad Khononov. I listened...
As much as I want all LLM-based generative AI to be ejected into the sun, it's probably not going to happen any time soon. And since I'm a professor at a university, I have to deal with the role of generative AI in education.
Oh my, I had already started writing the outline of my weeknotes when I realized the month was over as well! The monthly summary takes precedence here, so let’s get started with it! May was a very strange month, with a lot of things I got into, like buying my first bicycle (the first one I buy with my money, at...
2026-06-03Hello! I had considered re-theming my website for the month with obnoxious rainbows and unreadable text, but I ultimately decided against it.This isn't a photo of a pride event, although I later found out there was one nearby (it ended before I walked over there). In the near future, I'll try to attend a...
This time the theme is music & music production. Makes sense since I follow so many fedi musicians. You know who you are, Bonk Wave people. This project lets you turn any file into music using its binary data. A free and open source binary synth.I wonder if it’s good for Bonk Wave. Paul says this YouTube channel is...
This is, quite simply, an ongoing list of words that I’ve come across in reading that I’ve found particularly interesting or useful. I don’t know why so many start with either “a” or “p.” (last updated: June 3, 2026) abstemious not self-indulgent, especially when eating and drinking. agglomeration a collection of...

I've just released BlogMore v2.37.0. This is a small update that fixes a bug and also improves the way that warnings and errors are emitted. The bugfix comes from yesterday's post where I noticed that the stats page was misreporting the number of tags on the blog. The cause of the problem was that, within reason, a...
Antón Barba-Kay: AI is not “inherently evil” in the sense that it can be used exclusively to bomb and oppress. But not even nuclear weapons or machine guns work that way. We are never caused to do anything by a tool (or a narcotic). There is therefore no trade-off between using Claude and “reading stories to a...
Robert Birming, who has a pretty great blog himself, is running a little thing called Junited, where participants give shoutouts to fellow bloggers they think more people should know about. techcrunch.com Bloomberg reports that the company has instituted a new rule that places a monthly $1,500 cap per employee and per agentic coding tool, including Anthropic’s Claude Code or Cursor.AI fanatics love to say “this is the worst AI will ever be,” but it’s probably also the cheapest it will ever be as it’s...
I got the renewal notice for my Microsoft Office subscription through a while back, £85 for the year. Enough to make me pause and think, do I really need this? Like most of you I use Office365 at work, extensively, and there is a lot of good to be found if you are embedded in […]Thanks for reading and keeping RSS...
This blog is moving to another domain Please update your feeds. Till my late twenties (now I am in my early thirties) I used to listen to music regularly. During my teen years it was on a bulky cassette player or a Walkman, or on the radio. In later years I switched to portable music players and then to...
Yay, Furality is here! I don’t know how many people are coming here vs. to my music site since Furality doesn’t give me any dealer’s den click metrics or whatever, but welcome all the same. I already posted a Furality-specific entry on the blogpuppet, but since this is what I consider my main website, I guess I’ll...
The book can’t compete with the screen. It couldn’t compete beginning with the movie screen, it couldn’t compete with the television screen, and it can’t compete with the computer screen. — Philip Roth We’re halfway through 2026, and according to Goodreads I’ve read 80 books so far, fiction and non-fiction and...
At the hazy dawn of the twentieth century, through the byways of mental meandering and mathematical play, Albert Einstein arrived at a revelation about the nature of the universe while working as a clerk at the Swiss patent office — a new relationship between space and time, the warp and weft of a single fabric that...

… this is just to say that your post, A Rebellious Brain really struck a chord with me, and I am really familiar with that undermining brain process with regard to writing. Oh my, yes. (Also, you who are reading this who aren’t Explicating Elle… why aren’t you over at her blog reading it right this minute?) (Go on.)...
[Equations in this post may not look right (or appear at all) in your RSS reader. Go to the original article to see them rendered properly.] The biggest problem I face when writing posts in this series is deciding how much background explanation to put in. If I included only the stuff I do to get the answer, the...
Comitting to sharing other's blog posts on my blog to further encourage the blogging ourorborus Photo unrelated, I just like having photos on my blog posts. May 2026. Stockport. Back from Romania, we dashed off to Stockport the next morning to help Matt and Emma with their move from central Manchester (Emma’s Dad had already done the hard yards) to Heaton Norris. Just look at the stress on Matt’s face on the Magnet’s balcony; Yes, we turned up just in time to pick up...
If you have a multi-cluster EKS deployment for your development, QA and staging environments, those generally don't need to run at 3AM. No one is using any of that, except for maybe a few cronjobs to refresh data. Everything else is wasted idle compute. The math is simple. A dev cluster running 24/7 bills for 168...
I've been sober (from weed) since May 20th. It's now June 3, 14 days later. And I want to write about it while its all still fresh. I want to reference this next time I think to myself "smoking isn't so bad for me." I'm not sure I'm never gonna smoke. But I don't want to go back to even smoking every weekend....
This is a non-exaustive list of stuff that’s crossed my mind in recent days. CW depression etc. Am I even a person? Sometimes I dont feel like a human. I want a completely different life that has absolutely nothing to do with me and which I had never truly considered until now and I hate myself for it. Or maybe it’s...

What Is This? This page serves as a documentation of the visual elements used on BurgeonLab. As explained on the IndieWeb wiki, it’s a page that describes either the writing or visual styles used on a site. I don’t know when my “big theme redesign” will finally be live, but some of the styles are not consistent...
Spangled Cotinga Had lots of fun with the camera at the San Diego Safari Park with my sister. So many cool animals and fun scenes. It’s not every day you see a man walking an aardvark or a zookeeper named Fern. I finally caught a (poorly lit) glimpse of the platypus. I also saw the Sand Cat for the first time (very...

In case you missed my other post about this, I've been beating all the mainline Final Fantasy games in order of release. And, I just now got done beating the third one! First of all: This is by far the best game in the series so far, I'd say. It combines the combat of FF1 with the story-focus of FF2, while improving...
