The swim start for this race seems chaotic—athletes jump from the San Francisco Belle into San Francisco Bay en masse, and the entire ship is emptied in less than eight minutes. From what I’ve read, last year’s start was more rushed and disorganized than in previous years, which led to an athlete being paralyzed...
This is my submission for the June 2026 IndieWeb Carnival. The theme is “No way!?”, hosted by Alex Hsu. I saw “a11y” recently and it reminded me of my “No way!?” moment when I finally figured out, after years of puzzlement, what it meant. For the longest time, I thought it was a fanciful way of spelling “ally,” but...
Not my usual fare, by far, but this is what happens when you turn 60 and realize just how little you actually move on a daily basis: the lure of an easy and gentle routine that will help you keep moving a bit better for a bit longer. 10-Minute Chair Yoga Exercises for Seniors, by April Hattori You will forgive me,...
The vibeA shorter and slightly slower week. The Memorial Day weekend was a nice reset, summer break meant calmer mornings, and I still found time to write a few articles. Nothing too dramatic, which is not a bad thing at all.Highlights🌞 This week was a short week at work with Monday being the Memorial Day holiday....
A few weeks ago, I was contacted by a reporter working on a story about the extent to which AI, as a topic of research and an area of specialization demanded by employers, was becoming dominant in philosophy. Here’s one thing I said to her: People should be cautious when inferring how much philosophy of AI work is...

Open, less so 03 Jun, 2026 Over the past week, many Android FOSS apps installed from alternative stores have started displaying an alert saying something like: "Google has announced that, starting in 2026/2027, all apps on certified Android devices will require the developer to submit personal identity details...
Announcing TOWNSQUEER, a games bundle and zine from the members of Gamedev.lgbt! Plus some general housekeeping for Indie Tsushin!
This is my entry for this month’s Bear Blog Carnival, on the topic of staying connected while practicing digital minimalism. Thank you Juni for hosting the Carnival, and for choosing such a fascinating topic!Over the last two years, I have tried to be more intentional about the technology I use. I proactively ask...
Just a quick update on my post titled 34 Draft Posts, can you guess what that update is? The thing is, I have 4 posts scheduled already, but a couple of those weren’t part of the original list of 34 Draft Posts, so coupled with some newer ideas the number has gone up. This is […]Thanks for reading and keeping RSS...
pitchfork.com Over the weekend, 15 previously unreleased covers appeared on Rivers Cuomo’s YouTube page with little explanation and even less warningI get that people hate on Weezer because their new music isn’t great (or even good sometimes…), but they are one of the few bands from that era still consistently...
Learned a new word: Spredges is a portmanteau of sprayed and edge that refers to the decorative spraying of artwork along the outside edges of a book.Currently Listening: Hovvdy “Try Try Try”Reply via email
Yesterday, I started messaging some old friends I hadn’t spoken with in literal ages. One of them, it’s been about a decade since we last connected. One I haven’t seen in person in over two decades. None of us had any falling out or anything between us. Life just got in the way, and we all went different places and...
Better late than never, but it's been a busy, busy beginning of the week and month. June issues for Foofaraw and QB went out, QB announced April CRUMBS winners and our June theme (open for submissions), still diving through new submissions, editing stories, building out the site, bringing on more cartoonists,...
Honestly, this week went by in a flash, I am not sure of what even happened with it, but either way, time continues moving forward, and some things changed during such an event, here are some notes I got from it. 📬 I finally received my pair of post cards from NantucketLit’s First-Class Fiction! The mailing system...
May 2026. Cluj. Romania. I could write far more about Cluj’s architecture, but you’ve got the idea by now. How about the bars ? All the attractive looking cafes in the cobbles off the main square seem to have a craft beer in a can; I really liked Opium by Cluj’s Hophead Brewery in Brasseria Locala by the...
The mother of my sunshine has a beautiful garden behind her house, right by the river Ruhr, which her son tends with great passion. There are quite a few gorgeous flowers in bloom at the moment and it’s simply lovely. I had to made some photos, even with my crappy smartphone. Here are a few shots. Enjoy.
2026-06-02Hello! This is written like an open letter, because why not. I put a half-hearted effort into it a few weeks ago after thinking of the vlogbrothers YouTube channel, and I think it would continue to provide me some fun creative challenges.Should probably invent a character — the one specific person that...
Joy in the Arboretum, Joy Inside mtift Tue, 06/02/2026 - 08:45 A lot of people have been asking me what’s happening with yoga at the Arboretum. I wish I had a happier answer. The Arboretum is one of my favorite places to teach yoga. My first class at the Minnesota Arboretum was memorable because I was greeted by a...
I had such fun photographing the little characters in the dioramas at the recently reopened Edo Tokyo Museum. They recreated what is still real life in Arashiyama. 先日リニューアルオープンした江戸東京博物館のジオラマに登場する小さなキャラクターたちを撮影していて、本当に楽しかった。そこでは、今もなお嵐山で続いている日常が再現されていた。
Every last Sunday of the month, our flight club (now that I'm a paying member, I take particular pride in saying "our") arranges an open house event. My first one back in April as a guest was a slightly muted affair due to the less-than-perfect weather (I did have my very first flight in a Cessna airplane regardless).
The month of May comes to a very busy end for me personally1, and with it closes our May edition of the Swift Blog Carnival, which I once again thank Christian Tietze greatly for offering me to host for the month. I’m honored to have gotten the response I did to my call for posts, and I’m excited to share everyone’s...

Deepseek is pretty amazing. I made 22 API calls yesterday and I have spent….$0.005. Granted my use case is extremely simple, just some simple data work, extracting and shuffling data from a csv file to create a directory page on a website. But what would’ve taken me 2x longer copy and pasting, with lots of context...
Introduction¶ Having recently added the dump command to BlogMore I've been thinking I should try and learn a little more about jq. It's one of those tools that's been on my radar for ages, which I've used on very rare occasions to get something done quickly, but which I've never really used in anger. So I thought it...

A beat is a repeated sequence of percussive effects. A groove is an extended engagement with time. It takes certain musical skills to construct a good beat, but that’s a job you can outsource to a machine. There’s a different kind of musicality at work in a groove: you have an extended and ever-negotiated...
I need to fill this page out, so consider this dinky placeholder “in progress.” jacques tati | buster keaton | jean-luc godard | yasujirō ozu | takashi shimura | zombie films | gentle cinema | time loop | time travel | 60s spaghetti westerns | 80s spaghetti horror | the mid-later silent era | kieślowski's 'three...
Motivation I have had this game idea bouncing around in my head for a long time. Expressive movement, open-world, low-res to permit a lot of speed, and a variety of celestial objects to zip in and around. Set in some post-scarcity civilization, the suit is nigh-invincible. Surface Details: Thanks to Loren Schmidt...
There's something prehistoric about the trees round here. They mark out boundaries of farming land but it's impossible to tell whether the trees or the farms came first. In all honesty, probably a bit of both; land will likely have been originally earmarked by natural landmarks such as this ancient tree before, much...
Many people are struggling to understand what they think about AI and how to approach it. Perhaps the bigger problem is that the technology is not fully deterministic but probabilistic. I quite like the framing of the idea Dan presents: AI's biggest difference is that it cannot care about anything. I certainly can...
I spent the weekend with my cousin amid the floriferous glory of Derbyshire at the turn of summer, with sunshine (much of the time) to heighten the beauty. However, along the way I discovered that, annoyingly, I was developing a stinking cold – which is now, on my return to Lichfield, in full dismal swing, a real...
For the first time today, I understood the sentences and also guessed correctly new words in context!!! It feels like when I started learning to read in English decades ago! ?

In a column for The Guardian, Chris Cotonou comments on the omission of Greek characters from the otherwise multicultural cast of Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. Chris notes: An honourable intention [to have a multicultural cast]. But for us Greeks, it makes our absence even more glaring – especially in the year’s...
Many news sites, including a few German ones, are now trying to get you to add them as a preferred source on Google. This can be annoying. Why should I do this? And why do you try to remind me on every visit? And why do you even assume I am using Google News? Are the sites so desperate because AI is reducing the...
The very first computer programming class I ever took introduced me to the idea of there being different kinds of numbers, like integers, floats, and doubles (it was a C++ course). “You mean, when I assign a variable, I have to say up front what kind of number this is?” It was such an odd concept to me. A number is...
Dammit, my second print somehow went wrong. I think it's because I dont have the printer on the steadiest of surfaces. Will move and try again. Thanks for reading this post via RSS. RSS is ace, and so are you. ❤️ You can reply to this post by email, or leave a comment.
Wipr 2, the Safari ad blocker created by Kaylee Serena (and the one I use), got a new feature that extends its functionality system-wide: Filtr. Developed over the past ten months, it makes use of a new technology introduced in version 26 of Apple’s operating systems, the URL Filter. According to Kaylee, it allows...
On May 30, 2026, the San Antonio Spurs won game seven of the Western Conference Finals on the road to advance to the franchise’s first NBA Finals since 2014. I just published an article on NBA Finals Droughts, which was inspired more by the 2025-26 Eastern Conference Champion New York Knicks making their first NBA...
Interactive explainers are one of my favourite things about the web: people passionate about things introduce them to others, for free, with care, and often using some interesting interactive or educational approaches in the process. I picked a few I particularly liked for this post. These aren’t just explaining...
I’ve mentioned a couple of times that a commensurate carbon tax would have to be infinite or larger than infinite (and that rationing is a better solution). Here’s the situation. I’ll use Sweden as the example just to get numbers but similar applies to all lands and realms. Our plan was to go from 21 Mt CO2e in...
There is a question that hides inside every careful one: from where am I looking? Ask it once and you get the standpoint — the angle, the interest, the position you happen to occupy. The honest response, on most accounts, is to name that position rather than pretend you have none. But naming it treats the position...
This post is inspired by JP, who speaks about how Google has become an insessant nagging AI-pusher. The more and more we let "AI" in, the more liberties it seems to take. For me, this is crystalised perfectly by one thing. If you use Microsoft Outlook, or Google Gmail (and I'm sure others do this), now when you...
