An interesting piece in The Times yesterday, about literary couples, i.e. cohabiting couples composed of two writers, each pursuing their own projects or, sometimes, collaborating. American examples include Paul Auster and Siri Hustvedt, Joan Didion and John Gregory Dunne, Noah Baumbach and Greta Gerwig. From this...
A while back I decided to stop using Tailwind for new projects and to just write vanilla CSS instead. But one thing I missed about Tailwind was the colour palette (here as CSS). If I wanted a light blue I could just use blue-100 and if I didn’t like it maybe try blue-200 or blue-50. I’m not very good with colours so...
Not much happening this time. I spent some of the time this weekend doing the Warpath event, but it turned out to be a bit boring. As much as I enjoy a nice lil PVE event, my blood craves for adrenaline inducing fights against other players.. So I went back to hunting. Also the event rewards, while nice, were being...

A round-up of what I shared on social.omgmog.net between 27 April and 3 May.
April 2026. Skipton. I seem to have upset my many esteemed Yorkshire readers, something to do with gravy, so to redeem myself here’s a post on saving yourself £12.80 on your visit to Skipton Castle. OK, you won’t actually get inside the castle by walking round the woods, but there’s no pub inside the walls anyway,...
This post relies on subresources (styles and scripts) that your feed reader will not load. You may want to click through for this one. While chatting with Anne the other day I casually asserted that you obtain a tag from by extracting the final path segment from its href attribute. Consider this HTML fragment: When...
Dear reader,If you read tech reviews, you may have encountered the phrase: "The best option for most people" or some of its variants. But what is the best option for most seems like a highly subjective thing, where people can and will disagree.iPhone 17 is a great example, as most tech sites consider it the best...
This is an excerpt from an exchange that I am reproducing with permission from my correspondent. I am not sharing their contact details. As I understand, you’re using the regular keybindings in emacs. I’m trying to transition away from the vim way of editing text and was wondering if you’re using a more ergonomic...
See the series post for an overview of all the episodes. Introduction 00:00 Introduction and recap. 05:47 Patrice takes over and looks at the syntax diagram in the CXL topic of Capire and the specific path expression diagram. He remarks that one of the cool things about path expressions is that you can chain...
Colorado State University Libraries. Public domain image via Wikimedia Commons. I’ve written before about what I’ll call my ambivalence about genealogical research—or rather, how it often gets presented in the US American context, as a tool of instant and heartening connection to a past and its actors, of...
Just found out about IndieWeb Fiction Carnival and I'm screaming inside as I have to go sleep. I'll work on this. And if I get into it, I might host one myself! #blogging #writing #IndieWebThank you for following my feed! ♥ Leave a reply here.
A few months into my new role, the biggest change has nothing to do with the job itself. It’s that i can’t listen to music while working. Even though most of my team works remotely, i work a few days a week with some of my colleagues – and, most importantly, my boss – in a semi-open-plan office space. I can’t...
Learn how to build impactful conference presentations by focusing on storytelling, narrative throughlines, and audience experience rather than just slides.
Whenever I'm traveling or photographing airplanes (or both), I use snapshots taken with my smartphone camera as a visual diary of my adventures. Normally, I'd dump them into my photo library and rarely revisit them, which is a shame really. Sure, it's not all champagne and fireworks, but there are many memorable...
It's the first Sunday of the month which means it is time for another Digital Independence Day. And unlike last month the website DI.DAY is now available in English! Every first Sunday of the month, we celebrate Digital Independence Day: We reclaim our freedom in the digital world, stop destroying democracy, and...
After the failure of March I am back up to a new piece per month this year! This piece I completed last weekend, just squeezinig it in before the end of the month. There isn't so much to say about this one, I let my Octane Render subscription run out last year when I was making very very little art and so it didn't...
Upgrading the valves on my bike to Clik valves is a real game changer. Straightforward to use and fixes a few annoying issues with the previous Presta valves (for example, accidentally unscrewing the valve while removing the pump). Another cool thing: there are conversion kits from Schwalbe available for both Presta...
How a phantom currency keeps bank account reports clean Envelope budgeting is the practice of planning ahead for known expenses, by regularly putting money into pre-determined categories, or envelopes. As the name suggests, it is often done with real cash placed into real envelopes. Envelope budgeting can be done in...
I can’t help to note just how nice it is to wake up three days in a row without an alarm.I had a little bit too much beef (the food, not disagreeing with people) on Friday, so obviously I needed the whole of Saturday to recover. And today I went to visit two museums with my nieces and my brother-in-law, which was...

27th April - 3rd May I passed a clump of Welsh Poppies in the graveyard, bowing their heads in the rain like respectful mourners, and felt a pang of jealousy that mine hasn't yet flowered. On my return, I noticed they, in fact, had! Floral "Baader Meinhof" effect? I finally managed to log the buzzard on Merlin. I...
My colleague and I were to meet at the court complex for my initiation into how courtrooms work. As a joke-quip, I said to my colleague, "See you in court!" And so, for the next handful of hours, for every query of mine regarding a legal process, her example would begin: "So let's say you and I are involved in a...
I spent a lot of time outside in April. The first two weekends I did long bike rides: from Brooklyn to Tarrytown along the Old Croton Aqueduct trail, and out to Rockaway Beach via the Marine Parkway Bridge & Cross Bay Memorial Bridge. Then, I ran the Brooklyn Experience Half Marathon. I wrote some notes about the...
One of the things I noticed when I started on the BlogMore experiment was the fact that Copilot/Claude seemed to love to write monolithic code. Pretty early on most of the code was landing in just a couple of files. Once I noticed this I instructed it to break things up and always try and be more modular. This...
So my daughter had her final tennis tournament this past Saturday and it was a sunny day. She did very well this time around and ended up placing 3rd overall! With that though, we were there the entire tournament. Dummy me, I didn’t bring a hat. I look like a lobster. LOL.
About Feather Wiki I discovered Feather Wiki indirectly via fellow blogger, Jack Baty. He uses many different tools for his multiple blogs; and for one of them he uses TiddlyWiki, which is a feature-rich “non-linear personal web notebook”. Inspired by TiddlyWiki, Feather Wiki is a lightweight alternative built from...
LC and I celebrated our 11-year anniversary today.Ten years was easy to name as a milestone. After all, it’s a whole ass decade. Eleven is a little less obvious, but it’s still something I want to mark and celebrate, just in a quieter way. This year is the first time we’re celebrating our dating anniversary as a...
Complaints about Apple’s design choices usually involve transparency, color, and other legibility concerns. These criticisms are legitimate, but the poor design choices that usually set me off are the ones involving the mechanics of commands—what I have to do to get something done. I think of these as the “design is...
General happeningsFirst half of Golden Week is over. Unfortunately, it started off with rather bad weather this year - three days of grey skies and rain. Still, I managed to not "waste a day" (= just staying at home and listlessly watching YouTube). The second half looks like it's going to be better! The blog I...
2026-05-03Hello! First, a technical note: I bought a third domain name, and I already regret it. Come check out dingusberry.com and tell me what I should do with it.When you use a shallow depth-of-field (something like f/2.8) you are able to separate the background from your subject, with a decent falloff and...

I have complex feelings about Generative AI but one area I find myself weirdly bullish on is small language models (SLMs) in the browser which are available in Chrome and Edge behind an experimental flag. I know, I know. I know. AI in the browser reeks of a product manager trying to hit a KPI to shoehorn AI into...
New York is a city of hooks—Red Hook in Brooklyn, Corlears Hook on the Lower East Side, Tubby Hook in Inwood, for example. Okay, Tubby Hook is a name that hasn’t been widely used for a century. But in the colonial era, Dutch settlers gave the name “hoek”—later anglicized to “hook”—to the many irregular-shaped spits...
This is perhaps my favourite feature in Lightroom. You press ⇧T, you draw a few lines, and presto – your photo is now even: This is doubly magical to me. The first part is that this is even possible – that you can straighten the photo in both dimensions after the fact, and save for some parallax nuances the viewer...
I wrote about building websites with LLMs — (L)ots of (L)ittle ht(M)l page(s) — and I think it’s time for a post-mortem on that approach: I like it. I’ve tweaked a few things from that original post but the underlying idea is still the same, which I would describe as: Avoid in-page interactions that require...
In all formerly communist countries, May First is a holiday, marking the unofficial start of springtime and barbecue season. However, I decided to spend this day with friends, going out for a walk in my city and then we took a ride towards the nearby dam. Since this year, the weather was announced to be rainy and...
🤷♂️ Life 📚 Read 📰 Considered 📺 Watched Not sure what else to watch next. I clicked on to For All Mankind but then remember that the last season left me a bit nonplussed. It had become a fairly standard type of story that just happened to be set in and around space. Not sure […]Thanks for reading and keeping RSS...
As is tradition - but equally delayed by a few days because of The Circumstances - I’ve kept a hold of the most interesting things I discovered on our wild and occasionally-wonderful internet in April, and now offer them up to you as a curated offering with only some mild promotional affect. None of these items are...
“Learn why the world wags and what wags it. That is the only thing which the mind can never exhaust, never alienate, never be tortured by, never fear or distrust, and never dream of regretting.” In his wonderful contribution to A Velocity of Being: Letters to a Young Reader, Yo-Yo Ma tells children about how books...
Back in 2023 I challenged myself to use my phone in greyscale mode for a week. The experiment was successful: a week later, I was still using my phone in greyscale mode. At some point afterwards, I did disable greyscale mode. But last year, or early this year (I can't remember exactly when) I turned greyscale mode...

tl;dr: ArgotWhatsapp, Messenger, Signal, Discord, Teams, SlackSome better than others, some truly encrypted and some not. What they all have in common is that they're controlled by one single entity - yet those are the services we trust to handle our digital person-to-person communication. This is not how the...
As I have mentioned before, I do quite some reading. And as I'm about to move house, I have packed up a lot of my books. But I wanted to highlight some that I've been reading, or am planning to read.
