This week was a bit of a regular week as it would go. The vibe A grounded week with a surprisingly big ending. Nothing about it felt flashy, but between family moments, steady progress, and finally finishing my degree, it ended up meaning a lot. Highlights ☁️ Tuesday and Wednesday was the Virtual Cloud Security...
Four days ago, on Thursday 30 April 2026, my wife Olga gave birth to a beautiful baby named Marius, and the three of us seem to be glowing with love ever since. Mother and child are both healthy, and I am as happy as I am in admiration of the work from every one involved at the hospital; midwives in particular have...
In a famous episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation, “Darmok” — an episode I previously wrote about here — Captain Picard finds himself trying to communicate with Dathon, the captain of an alien vessel whose mental framework is incomprehensible to that of Picard and, indeed, the entire Federation. Dathon’s people...
The Lombard invasion of Venetia in 568 — from "Historia Langobardorum" by Paul the Deacon.
For the longest time I’ve had a weird obsession with stationery. I love finding and collecting pens, optimizing inks and paper, collecting a billion notebooks I’ll never use, etc. Recently I got back into using and collecting fountain pens. I’ve kept a pocket notebook for over a decade, and I liked the idea of...
The tidying of the BlogMore source carries on; sometimes by hand, but also sometimes by using either Copilot/Claude or Gemini to decide how best to nudge the codebase in a desired direction. When I do the latter, if I like the suggestions the agents make, but it looks like a bunch of work and I can't be faffed with...
Christy Mag Uidhir will be giving up his position as professor of philosophy at the University of Houston. Readers may recall that the administration at the University of Houston had adopted the “indoctrination narrative”, a pretext for violating the academic freedom of professors to teach what and how they judge...
Fastmail has folders that can auto-purge emails? This feature lets you automatically delete messages from a folder after a certain amount of time. I’ve found it to be a great way to manage notification emails that I want to keep for a while, but not forever. Here’a how to set up an auto-purge folder: Go to the...
2026-05-04Hello! You know, given that today marks the start of exam week, I should be giving myself an excuse to write shorter articles so I can really crunch on my study materials. I forgot what a capacitor is, and I still don't know if Jim Crow is a real person. Off to a great start!Anyway, this article might be...

No Brand Con did what a lot of people thought would never happen this last weekend – we came back from the dead. Like in 2023 we were truly dead, buried, in the ground, and all of us thought the con wasn't coming back. But a year ago some of us decided to do something truly insane. We decided to resurrect it. We...
Beneath the gnarled roots of the ancient hawthorn, where moonlight dares not tread, the cauldron rests. Its iron sides etched with runes long forgotten, pulsing faintly with a rhythm like a slow, sleeping heart. No flame licks beneath it, yet steam coils upward in spectral spirals, carrying whispers of names that...
I would search my feelings this morning, but Siri would tell me I have to unlock my iPhone to see the results. Reply by email
Writing my post on how I use my phone in grayscale yesterday got me thinking about other customisations I make to the computing devices I use. The first one that came to mind is that I keep my laptop, and by extension my external display when I am using it, in night shift mode at all times. According to Apple, night...
It’s hard to be in charge of continuity on a movie set. It would already be difficult under the best of circumstances: after all, you can’t freeze the sun in the sky, prevent hot drinks from going cold, cigarettes from extinguishing themselves, or entropy in general from doing all the stuff it loves doing. But on...
Life throws you lemons. It’s an inescapable fact of… well, life. And at some point, you’re going to need someone who can help you decide between lemonade and a whiskey sour. I have a small, but very select, highly discerning circle for just such an occasion. It’s my cat, Luffy. Now, before you roll your eyes at me,...
Heya! So, I'm hosting the bearblog carnival this month! Well, I was supposed to anyways. It's been four days into may now, and... Uh, I kind of forgot. But we're here now! So, the topic for this months carnival is "Your favorite ____ in your niche hobby" What do i mean by that? Well, I'm sure you're into at least...
Another month, another Game Changers review! To recap: I tore through all six books in the series back in early December 2025, and decided on the spot that I would review them all. Life and things and stuff happened, so I’m taking it slow. Beware: about 15 years age gap between two consenting adults having sex;...
The fun is real. So is the mechanism stripping the people who invented it. Every thematic drinking holiday follows the same invisible script: a marginalized community creates something vivid and defiant in the face of suppression, mainstream culture discovers it’s enjoyable once the edge has been sanded off, and...

This above all—ask yourself in the stillest hour of your night: must I write? Delve into yourself for a deep answer. And if this should be affirmative, if you may meet this earnest question with a strong and simple, “I must,” then build your life according to this necessity; your life even into its most indifferent...
And that's fine. I tried to play XCOM 2 and XCOM Chimera Squad. I liked the premise of both games, especially Chimera Squad: The idea of aliens being left on earth after humans vs aliens war is rather intriguing. Sadly, due to the nature of the game, it doesn't really explore it as much. XCOM 2 was fine but way too...
Another small this and that post. Blog Stuff I decided to remove all web fonts from my blog, now WOFF2. At the end it was nearly half an MB just for a slightly different font. Well, I used local fonts but still, tiny is better. Also at the footer of each post I integrated a webmention display via webmention.io....
In 2009 I started my first little zine. Back then I still did art full time and kept up with my artist friends and such. The zine was online, just a self hosted Wordpress site (It's all I knew how to do.) on a $5 a month cheap host. I would do a few posts here and there and try to get artist friends to check it out...
Things have been happening faster than I can blog about them. The most interesting event has been my visit to my ancestral hometown, Mangalore in India. I was there for a cousin’s son’s wedding and a holy communion party. Many of my cousins also made it. It was one of the largest family gatherings in recent times...
The 2026 edition of Mother’s Day falls on May 10, six days from today (with “today” being May 4, 2026, the date of publication of the instant article). Back in 2021, I published a research article on Anna Jarvis and the early twentieth-century origins of Mother’s Day, with links to contemporaneous newspaper articles...

Quackgrass, aka couchgrass, aka Elymus repens: (this little mumbletyswear) has long been my sworn foe. Only recently did I learn its roots and grains are edible. i'm sorry, you can eat WHAT Close up, quackgrass reminds me of corn: a tough central green stalk with leaf blades that fold away at intervals, sharp and...
Saturday was Newsletter day and I was busy on Sunday, so our daily Pook-Emu Bee links had the weekend off. But there are no such impediments this Monday, so I am back with my regularly scheduled links. 1. Indie developer lands in Steam approval limbo after being flagged for IP infringement over in-game references to...
Obligatory May The 4th Be With You, by the way. Another week is over, I am still wearing my pajamas and enjoying a day off, which makes this Monday one of the best Mondays of the year thus far. Zero complaints! Here’s a question, when was the last time you actually just played like a kid? something like tag, or with...
Today is Mrs N's birthday – and that of the inventor of the piano, Bartolomeo Cristofori (born 1655). One of his pianos, built in Florence in 1720, survives in playable condition, and this is what it sounds like (the pianist is Dongsok Shin, and the piece is a Scarlatti sonata, D9). Having a wooden rather than a...
I've always been a bit of a hater. Chaitanya's Moving on from being a Hater post makes some good points about this frame of mind. Being a hater can create a negative perception of the world, that much is certainly true. But I think this can be tempered. It's possible to be an optimistic hater. Better things are...
📌 My view (unfortunately my back is turned to this) It was way more relaxed than I thought it would be! It's a small team. Other than setting up (which was a royal pain), it was a really good day.
I was featured on Hyde’s Over/Under series this week! Go read it and check out the rest of the series while you’re at it. Each week, Hyde interviews another blogger to get their opinions on five different topics and answer a few other questions. This week it was vinyl, Kobo, Keychron keyboards, Ray-Ban AI glasses,...
A self is a story we tell to bridge who we are and who we have been, turning the fluidity of personhood into a resin of narrative that hardens with each retelling. “If we are creatures of time, then we had better know it,” Ursula K. Le Guin wrote, “to act responsibly.” And yet we don’t. We encounter each other at...
If you know the names Marshall McLuhan & Neil Postman then you can probably skip this one. If you don’t recognize those names then the first 90 pages of Garber’s “Screen People” will feel like fresh air. While I 100% agree with what the book asserts, but it lacks clarity & AN INDEX! It mentions lots of bad things...

Whoops I guess it’s been a few weeks since I’ve posted anything here, how did that happen?Well, here’s how. FatigueMy fatigue has gotten a lot worse lately. I’m having trouble mustering up the energy to do things, and what energy I do muster tends to go to things that are critical, rather than fun. Gardening (of the...
Juha-Matti Santala suggested the topic of love letters to his readers last week, and I’m glad he did, because it helped shake something loose in my head. Six months ago, James Maliszewski made a pensive entry on his blog Grognardia called “Why I Stayed.” Reading it made me feel pensive in turn. That day I added a...
After yesterday’s post, I got an email from reader Ron Sprague outlining two ways to block sender addresses from the list view in iOS Mail. Both of these methods are efficient, and neither starts with choosing a command with a stupid name like View Contact Card. I knew about one of these methods but not the other;...
My brother gave us a little sprig of a thing to put in the ground when we moved into our house. It bloomed for the first time this year.Currently Listening: Ninajirachi “iPod Touch”Reply via email
The upside to a constantly changing city is the sudden resurfacing of a faded store sign. Case in point: the outline of the “Cards-U-Like” Hallmark store on First Avenue between 75th and 76th Streets. I’m placing it in the late 1970s because of the cute cursive letters, and the earliest newspaper ads I could find...
I've been reading the new Sally Rooney novel, Intermezzo. It's really beautiful. The perfect kind of novel to read slowly. She manages to write prose that's engaging at the micro and macro levels - beautiful sentences, as well as lovely long narrative arcs. I've been trying to read the dialog with an Irish accent in...
Before the Incident Report: How We Are Collaborative mtift Mon, 05/04/2026 - 15:03 (This article was originally published on Drupal.org.)At DrupalCon Chicago, the Driesnote included a visualization with “community” as one of the three pillars of Drupal, along with “platform” and “agencies.” That framing felt...
Celebrated our first wedding anniversary by hanging out with some friends who were here for my wife's birthday the previous day, then visited a botanical garden, walked through beautiful parts of a city, and had a sushi dinner date. Also drank some flower tea we got as a gift when we got married, and soon, we will...
I collect cool, interesting links spread all over the web and share them here in daily posts. Hope you enjoy! More of them in the archive. April 2026. Skipton. I had (genuinely) brought Mrs RM to Skipton last Sunday for reasons other than beers (pork pies and canal basins, mainly), so it was disappointing when she stopped me on the walk to ask “What’s that pub like ?“. I assumed she meant the venerable Devonshire, with its attractive salted caramel...
I’m a fossil when it comes to FFmpeg. I have previously explored encoding using the onboard integrated AMD or Intel chips, but have always had sub-par results when comparing that result to the one output by libx264 or libx265. That means I have always stuck to the high-CPU software encoding method. Recording from...
