This article did the rounds on my socials and on Bubbles, on how the publisher Panic receives mail by asking for it at the end of their games. It’s something I was aware of, I finished one of their games (Thank Goodness You’re Here!) and sent them a postcard – I think it was a picture of the high street of the town...
I have started seeds and early planting, so I also started a list. I have four times the available full-sun garden space this year, and I fully intend to use it. Started Indoors Acorn squash White acorn squash Butternut squash Spaghetti squash Zucchini (Fordhook) Zucchini (Black Magic) Cucumber (Picklebush) Cucumber...
Vielen Dank Christian!) (This is a bit of a merger of two talks I recently gave about fascism and AI. One was in German at the Cables Of Resistance conference, one in English at the Milton Wolf Seminar on Media...
My daily reading is deliberate at this point. I’ve settled on a small set of tools that surface the kind of internet I actually want, rather than whatever’s performing well today. Hacker News I use hcker.news rather than the main site, mainly to filter down to “smallweb” content and sort chronologically by...
T is for Tavern (short fiction) The thing about riding the same twenty miles every Saturday is that you know your route. You know it and you memorize what you see along the way. The faulty sprinkler that kicks off in your far neighbors yard which rockets water when it starts up. The elder beagle tied to an HOA sign...
I moved Keyboard Maestro app to a different folder as it was running. I gather there must be some technical reason for the app to have to be power cycled, so I appreciated this warning, and the thoughtful bit of copywriting: “Continue” is caveated with “not recommended” so that you feel more comfortable choosing...
I've seen a few posts on Bear Blog where people list / show the tools they are currently using, and I always find them interesting to read. So in this post, I want to showcase my current setup for quick notes when I'm "on the go". I own a lot of stationery, which I've haphazardly amassed over the years. Recently,...
A British imperial commission proposes splitting Palestine in 1937. Jewish leaders across bitter ideological divides — Labor socialists, Revisionist maximalists, diplomatic moderates — submit responses that converge on one requirement: the new state must contain a Jewish majority. The question was never whether. It...
I've been on vacation for a while and just now returned home. Still gotta reply to some e-mails, sorry! But also: Got a huge backlog of interesting data protection stuff to catch up on, and why not write about the most interesting things? ☁️☁️☁️ When you talk to people about data protection and privacy, what they...
The April issues of Foofaraw Zine is here! While I know it's horribly late, I didn't want to let Tony's beautiful cover art go to waste... Of course, all stories will be published for free on the web throughout the month, but paid supporters receive a PDF/EPUB with all of the month's stories at the beginning of the...
I've noticed that travel has become, of late, an act of collecting places. I've literally heard people referring to visiting a place as doing that place, as in "Have you done Japan?", assuming that one can do an entire country, and once that country is done it remains as such. As if a place is a product to be...
After years of posting photos only to Instagram I decided to build a dedicated photoblog at photos.clintmcmahon.com. This is the story of why I built it, how I used AI to migrate 250 old Tumblr posts and why the photos — not the code — are the product.
Tinkered with CSS again. Also now embeds should work properly, with better names and things. I found out about something called Open Graph protocol that helps apps like Discord and Matrix clients etc. to figure out what the important parts of the embeds are. Let me know what you think. :) I wanted something more...
“Words are events, they do things, change things… transform both speaker and hearer… feed energy back and forth and amplify it… feed understanding or emotion back and forth and amplify it,” Ursula K. Le Guin wrote in her magnificent meditation on how we tell ourselves to the world and each other two centuries after...
Thanks for your patience, everyone. It took a lot of work to process this year’s applications. There were lots of good applications. We are a micro-grant, but that said, this is the biggest year for NMG, with 5.6 lakhs in the grant pool, thanks to friends of NMG – Shweta/Ashwini(60K), Divya(25K), Miss.Y(30K) and...
Aunque no haya ningún otro...
This post is a part of my word-vomit series. Feel free to skip it.I am tired from a constant struggle to write a report about results I have obtained in the past few months of my postdoc. The main issue is that my mind does not want to do it; it's simply boring or not stimulating enough for my ADHD mind. This...
Roshan: Created page with "My daughter and me, both in our childhood, with my mother holding us San Francisco's current state of affairs is pretty amazing When I was a young child, around 8 months old, my parents were doctors in a village in India. The deal back then was that that government would educate you to be...
<-- Splitting a set top box HDMI output To convert my HDMI output to USB, I am using a Ugreen HDMI to USB capture card. This little device will allow me to connect the output from the Sky Stream box to my laptop. The Ugreen version I have is the 4k to 1080p@60 FPS on a USB-C with a USB-A converter. This device on...
I started my own Zonelets blog for writing that I feel like don't fit the rest of this website.
The use of AI is leading to burnout among its greatest advocates as they hit the limit of their meta-cognitive abilities: “I end each day exhausted—not from the work itself, but from the managing of the work. Six worktrees open, four half-written features, two ‘quick fixes’ that spawned rabbit holes, and a growing...
2026-04-21Back at the gardens...Hello!I walked into this desert exhibit, with loads of succulents both tall and small. One of my common struggles with photography is that I don't fill the frame enough. When I take portraits, I walk back and get full-body photographs. If I take pictures of a flower, I'll surround it...
Spoiler alert: I did not go to Boiler Room. But, there was a DJ (Erik Flow) in front of the Eaton Centre in Toronto, and my sister and I had a lot of fun dancing ... even though we were rudely interrupted by a tweaker that started calling us random slurs. The DJ and (who I assumed to be) his friend1 intervened until...
Since building Pika I’ve wanted to incorporate a “now and then” sort of now page with dynamic history. With the recent flurry of updates to Pika variables, I realized that my dream could now be made reality. It turns out that my recent habit of writing Friday posts is effectively me writing what I’m...
A professor writes in with some questions that arose during the recent season of graduate admissions. They write: How are departments putting up their prospective graduate students during visits? Are they housing them with current grad students? In a hotel? In a hotel with other prospective students? An AirBnB? With...
I'm taking a quick break this evening from my RPG story to air out my head a little. So as with any story I write I do a bunch of research and refresh my memory on how things were or are. What I remember about a video game from twenty years ago might not be correct. Like, I wanted to reference the onboarding for a...
In 2018, David and Chris recorded a podcast episode about the indie web in which the topic “living the indie web life” came up. As soon as I heard the phrase, I thought to myself: what does living the indie web life mean to me?This evening I hosted an online Homebrew Website Club, a meetup where people from around...
The risks and benefits of hosting your own on-line services
When a small-town police station is threatened with shutting down because of too little crime, the police realize that something must be done. Absolute funny comedy, feels like a Swedis Super Troopers. It’s raunchy at places, predictable, but it’s very very funny, and the references (like the last scene) show that...
Last Friday I checked out (hello, short interruption, brackets spu here, you might want to read this footnote1 before clicking the next link) nudel.cc2 for the first time. I was a bit disappointed at first as it seemed quite dead and I couldn't get anything to run, (or at least I didn't hear anything, turns out a...
I came across a long-form essay in Aeon by Carlo Iacono, a university librarian, titled Books and screens. Mr. Iacono argued against the idea that phones and other modern technological innovations are driving us toward a post-literate society. I would broadly break his argument into two parts while otherwise...
Jake, bud, I know there’s a lot of cultural context I’m missing here, but I don’t think “Please excuse my wife, she’s being emotional” is a good call in any culture ⦁ ⦁ ⦁ ⦁ ⦁ “We cannot let you bring your war here” is honestly a pretty understandable position, but this leader betrayed his own fatal mistake earlier...

April 2026. Eyam. Derbyshire. The landlady at the Three Stags’ Heads gently chided me for my mispronunciation of the name on the pump clip, which made me keen to visit Eyam, pronounced just as you’d expect (or not). Our last American visitors were also keen on a visit to a village I assumed only got a handful of...
Another wee update to blogmore.el, with a bump to v4.2. After adding the webp helper command the other day, something about it has been bothering me. While the command is there as a simple helper if I want to change an individual image to webp -- so it's not intended to be a general-purpose tool -- it felt "wrong"...
One of the things I’m trying to do with my life is lower the amount of money I spend on things I don’t really need. I call it The Don’t Buy Shit Challenge. I’m actually doing really well with that so far, which I’m proud of. I do have several yearly subscriptions, however, that I still need to figure out what to do...

If you subscribe to the notion that the presence of em dashes (—) in a body of text means — in the AI age — the piece must have been composed by an AI agent, you could consider using am dashes instead. Yes, that’s right: an am dash, as opposed to an em dash. The am dash looks a little like a tilde (~) but with a...
Here's some thoughts about how Gundam 00 adapted as a live performance is better than it has any right to be For some backstory, a few months ago I'd been doing a re-watch of 2007's Mobile Suit Gundam 00 with my kids; for one of them it's a favorite entry in the franchise but for the other it's a Gundam series they...
First asparagus dinner of the season. Can’t complain except someone wasn’t peeling them properly which was a bit of a problem. (That someone was me, obviously.) Went to have a quick planespotting evening with my cousin, which ended up being a bit underwhelming but still, a good reason to be out for a while after...
Quoted Framework wants its Wireless TouchPad Keyboard to be a better keyboard for your living room by Brad Linder (Liliputing) Expected to hit the streets later this year, this keyboard has chiclet-style keys with a trackpad on the right side. That trackpad measures 68.8 x 85.6mm (2.71″ x 3.36″) and supports Windows...
East Clear Creek, Arizona - a place of peace and quiet Peace and quiet. Rare commodities. Perhaps, a bit like peanut butter and jelly (sorry if you are allergic, or not a fan). It is possible to have one without the other, but they are better together. In my time as a junior high principal, I often found peace...
