The Social Smolnet It might have been an email thread. Or a lobste.rs comment. It was a discussion about yet another attempt at a new decentralized social protocol. And we reached the conclusion that with blogs and email, we already had a decentralized social network. We only needed to use it. This was the last push...
Most AI systems can be precisely copied. Suppose this is also true of future conscious AI persons, if any exist. Backup and fissioning should then be possible, transforming the significance of identity and death in ways our cultural and conceptual tools can't currently handle. Suppose that two humanlike AI neighbors...
The human being is an enjoyment-seeking creature. There’s a reason people are always trying to restrain themselves from excessive eating, drinking, scrolling, and shopping. It’s perfectly normal to pursue these and other pleasures even to the point of serious problems […]
(image courtesy of marcela bolivar) the phrasing and framing of one's own thoughts forms a pivotal part of recovering from, and actively combating, the insidious grasp an eating disorder has over its host's mind. for years and years now, i have viewed weight "gain" as the enemy. a concept without a conclusion, a...
I was recently asked on a podcast what my biggest game-changer was, whether it be a habit, way of thinking, purchase, or change of context. I didn't need to fish around for an answer, since I already know my biggest game-changer: becoming a day person. By this I mean I operate within daylight hours, getting up...
Like everyone, I’m busy developing expertise in harnessing AI, vibe coding in my spare time. I have a couple of product ideas I’d like to wrangle, but they’re going to take some time to get right. So I’ve been undertaking in-one-sitting projects and improving my prompting skill. Last month, I had Claude pull this...
These passages appear on pages 126-127 of Traversal in the context of Mary Shelley’s life. Where does love go when it goes? It is a common question, contrived in its commonness yet savagely sincere, bellowing in the bosom of every brokenhearted lover, reverberating through the body of every civilization’s love songs...
Ever since I saw the post on Alexandra’s blog for the genre I’ve been wanting to write a post.My genre is/has been/always will be fantasy.I read throughout the genre, from cosy to urban fantasy to romantasy to high fantasy, I love it all.Reading fantasy feels like coming home, the more imaginative the better.There...

The easiest and the laziest approach to art is to interpret its content psychologically or politically.
An edition of On Liberty published this month is the first to officially name Harriet Taylor Mill as a co-author alongside John Stuart Mill. The new volume is edited by Piers Norris Turner (Ohio State), Jo Ellen Jacobs (Millikin), Helen McCabe (Nottingham), Lilly Osburg (Karlsruhe Institute of Technology), Michael...
Backups, bad slides, quite a lot of links, couple of pictures, what more do you need?
No więc mam sobie tego Obsidiana, w którym prowadzę praktycznie całe swoje życie cyfrowe.
In which I challenge myself to draw a pokemon every day until I stop I'll be first to admit I'm off my game this week but there are extenuating circumstances so I'm not really sweating it. Let's dig in. Mon 03/16/2026 - Houndoom I did not do this thing justice. It looks wonky as hell and that's not the design's...
On July 22, 2025, I published Happy Cleaners Cargo Trike in Gowanus. The article was centered on photographs I had taken in the previous month of an adorable and endearing three-wheeled laundry pick-up and delivery vehicle seen outside an associated laundry establishment in Gowanus, Brooklyn. I was inspired to...
Quoted Flashback: Heat use strong defense, LeBron's winner to win 16th straight by Brian Windhorst (espn.com) In their absence, Jeff Green had one of the best games of his career, scoring 43 points. Brian Windhorst for ESPN wrote 27 straight wins: The most dominant stretch of LeBron James’ career, revisiting the...
Dear Ciara, There is a single name on everyone’s lips this morning: Narelle. Cyclone Narelle made landfall overnight, bringing with her devastating winds and the most torrential rain. We are lucky—we are far enough south that we are mostly out of her reach—but her presence can still be felt. The rain at home is...
When I loaded my website this morning – an hour or two after having woken up with great joy to rays of golden light radiating through the edges of the curtains – I noticed the cherry blossom emoji (🌸). It must be the first day of spring! I love moments like this when my website surprises me. The seasonal emojis...
This has to be one of the most popular bags of all time. Manufactured in Sweden in the 1960s (not mine, obviously) and visible on virtually everyone on the commute, this hardy rucksack is big enough for everything I need without being overly big. I've been after a Mustard one for ages and spotted this for £8 on...
Bollywood TV series about a few honest Indian custom officers who despite being in a tempting environment of illegal money try to fight the smuggler. The series is about their struggle. Although the ending is a bit in rush, but overall it deserves 3stars.
The Game Boy Camera was brilliant and stupid in equal measure, a 128x112 pixel sensor bolted on top of a cartridge, printing to thermal paper on a Game Boy Printer the size of a brick. I got both for Christmas when I was 12 and somehow spent hours with them. The minigames are absurd, the image quality is...
BearBlog has embraced the beauty of randomness. There is now a link you can click to go to a random BearBlog and another to go to a random BearBlog post. Many of these Indie/Small web sites like PowRSS, Ooh, and Bukmark Club have a random button. Clicking these links transforms you into a snowflake in the snowglobe...
I had no idea it was Alan Kay himself who was responsible for the mouse pointer’s distinctive shape. In 2020, James Hill-Khurana emailed him and got this answer: The Parc mouse cursor appearance was done (actually by me) because in a 16x16 grid of one-bit pixels (what the Alto at Parc used for a cursor) this gives...
February brought Chinese New Year, which always means chaos for me, so I wasn’t able to write last month’s newsletter. But I’m back, and in March I find myself inundated with so many good Chinese dramas that I’m having decision paralysis deciding what drama to watch first. If you have a wide range of tastes like I...
Reasons I like my iPhone: The camera Music, podcasts, and audio books Quick and consistent communication with friends and family Reasons I DON'T like my iPhone: Social media and news The urge to immediately "search" for something, instead of taking the time to wonder The frequency with which I open it out of boredom...
Linkdump number 99! We've reached the final two digit Linkdump. You know what this means? Next week we'll find out if the counter is three digit safe or if it will overflow and roll back to Linkdump -99, and then I will have to spend years digging myself out of that hole. But maybe it's time to implement a new...
The first thing Wemly did was run a control to ensure the device was working as she imagined. She hastily scrawled “the snow doesn’t melt if it’s frozen in place” at the top of her lab book, then deactivated the escapement mechanism. Wemly considered her lab book. She wanted to write something out of the ordinary to...
Brandon McMullen, on where the MacBook Neo leaves the iPad: “Will a MacBook Neo be better for an artist who draws for a living? How about a small child? What about people on construction sites? How about for your tech illiterate grandma? Is a MacBook better for an airline pilot?” I think the iPad is an amazing thing...
Last edited 1 hour, 8 minutes ago. I'm really into GAKHED's channel recently. I leave it playing on my TV like a chill playlist, and every time I look at the screen I smile. Highly recommend it. Haven't been able to read consistently lately. I'm dragging to read the last 20% of Carpe Jugulum and I've only read the...
This was the first trip I've had in a while where I didn't worry about the cat as friends agreed to let her shack up with them. ⊕Currently Listening: Michael Stipe & Andrew Watt “I Played the Fool”Reply via email
I’ve been thinking about the new Apple Studio Display lately, mainly in the context of Jason Snell’s review of it on Six Colors and his further discussion with Myke Hurley on Upgrade. Jason’s primary complaint about the Studio Display isn’t its high price or how little it’s improved over the 2022 version. It’s that...
"Diana acconcia alla venetiana" (Diana with Venetian hairstyle) from the "Habiti delle Donne Venetiane", published by Giacomo Franco, c. 1610.
Started on: Dec 16th, 2025 Finished on: Mar 18th, 2025 Time to read: 39 hours, 54 minutes Also published on Goodreads “Medieval” and “Dark ages” has become two faces of the same coin in popular culture, so much so that we almost always use it as a synonym for decadence. Like all sweeping generalizations, though,...

Thus was written for Chinatalk’s Essay Contest on Economic Security, and was originally submitted in 2026-02-24 AD (and thus before the Iran war). The original submitted pdf can be found here. As a slightly overdue update for this blog, my Ryona Yuri VN Jam entry, BDSiM, has been updated with more CGs and minor QoL fixes for the Noise Jam 2 release. This is the last planned update until I finish Chapter 2, which is now detailed in the game’s roadmap. Needless to say, the preface to this blog post of...
Read AJ's story, Silent Disco, now!Are you a pub or a club kind of person?100% club! Or a small live punk concert. The older I am, the more I get the appeal of a pub with a cozy fireplace, though. What’s your experience/opinion of EDM?If it gets people dancing in a good way, I’m all for it. I loved minimal techno and...
Book censorship is very, very, important to me, so when I see libraries that directly challenge book censorship, well, I love them! I’ve written many times in my blog about why I love libraries and detest book censorship. I’m here to promote a free nationwide library for the USA! Queer Liberation Library is a...
Sprezzatura. Say it out loud. Spreh-za-TOO-rah. Let it sit in your mouth for a second. Sounds like something you'd want to eat, or drink, or steal. By the time you get to that last syllable your hand is already moving on its own, thumb and forefinger pressed together, shaking in the air like an old Italian grandma...
March 2026. Stansted Airport. Essex. Dave (not that one) from Chicago was mildly astonished at the beer and breakfast trade at my local Spoons the other week. Goodness know what he’d make of the drinking at Stansted Airport at 7am this Monday. I’ve resisted the lure of a pre-flight pint since 2018, but what else is...
Mass-Driver just released MD UI, a neo-grotesque type family that’s been designed to compliment Rutherford Craze and Co.’s already excellent mono-space. And just as the name implies, MD UI is designed for a different kind of reading: When we think about reading, we tend to picture books, or magazines, or business...
Overview Large language models (LLMs), also commonly called “AI” are not very good, in multiple senses of the word. There are some cases where the technology may be less corrosive to the human spirit, so in this blog post I wanted to try to articulate the thoughts and feelings I have on the matter. The big problem...
Shanghai is my home base in China — and this time, I finally figured out why. A few days, a handful of places, and a tension I didn't expect to find running through all of them.
I collect cool, interesting links spread all over the web and share them here in daily posts. Hope you enjoy! More of them in the archive. GNOME 50 “Tokyo”. One of the most feature-packed updates in recent memory, with support for “fractional scaling” and variable screen refresh rates, new parental controls, various...

Part 1 of my series on the book “The Art of Spending Money” by Morgan Housel. One random fact from the book that stuck with me is this: Between the 10 richest men in the world, there are 13 divorces. Even if one has all the money in the world, more than they could spend in 1’000 lifetimes, a good and happy life is...
From the blog of Shubham Bose : I went to the New York Times to glimpse at four headlines and was greeted with 422 network requests and 49 megabytes of data. It took two minutes before the page settled. And then you wonder why every sane tech person has an adblocker installed on systems of all their loved ones. I’ve...
When we were children, we thought we had it all figured out. Life was about good vs evil. We wanted to be the “good guys” and to triumph over the “bad guys.” So all we had to do was learn the difference between the two, choose the good, and we'd be all set, right? But as we grow up and work our way through...
enerally, you can use reader mode to get around these paywalls to view the article. But the other day I mistakenly stumbled on a new way to do it for the Star Tribune: if you scroll down to the bottom of the page as soon as the content loads.
This is an entry from my journal. I describe how I do not lose my patience while working in my land. 22:45 local time. Heavy rainfall, strong winds, and low temperature. This is how the whole day unfolded. The forecast is for more rain until the end of the month, albeit at a lesser intensity. The flood-control and...
From film and TV writer David Chen’s review of this year’s Academy Awards: The concept of a 3.5-hour broadcast where you watch big movie stars accept awards and deliver heartfelt speeches is no longer as desirable or profitable as it once was. The Oscar’s TV audience has been steadily declining for about ten years,...
Another glorious spring day, and this morning I took a walk in hope of seeing more butterflies. There was much to enjoy – birdsong (including chiffchaffs now), flowers and early blossom – but, as it turned out, the slight touch of chill in the breeze was enough to deter the butterflies, fussy creatures that they...
Pattern Recognition On November 25, 2025, Physical Review Letters published research claiming potential evidence for intrinsic spin-triplet superconductivity in niobium-rhenium (NbRe)—a finding that, if confirmed, would represent a breakthrough in quantum materials science. The editors selected it as a weekly...
In November 1989 I passed the entry exams for the “Bachillerato Bilingüe”, aka the “Bilingual Bachelor”, a parallel study program that existed in my high school, and which gave access to the coveted “Baccalauréat International” degree; turns out my school was one of the few in Latin America that had that...
Looking back at 12 years on the internet12 years ago today, I wrote and published my first blog post. It was a badly written piece about world affairs—among the topics I had covered were the Russian annexation of Crimea and the missing Malaysian Airlines MH370. Reading it today, I'm confused as to what I was trying...
