The Kid is 7 now so it is the final time to present him the oryginal Star Wars. Well, the enhanced version.. but Original! I explicitly forbidden him from watching a lot of homeage (like the Fineass and Ferb movie) before we see The Originals - context is king, and I'm not even sorry for using this quote. And what...
I know this might be slightly controversial for my fellow developers, but: I tend to prefer a (good) GUI over the CLI. Git? Please, hand me a pretty client with colorful lines and a few buttons and functions to manage my branches. Database? Yes, please. Give me tables! And options to write my own queries and hand...
Going Home/Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9 by Albie Sachs; recording by Warrick Swinney When Dr. Phokeng Setai—one of six curators of the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa—finished our tour at the old Dusthouse—an architectural remnant from the museum’s former life as a huge grain silo—and told us to go in there one...
Hey all, I'm sure you've all been aware that things have been slowing down a little with Anubis development, and I want to apologize for that. A lot has been going on in my life lately (my blog will have a post out on Friday with more information), and as a result I haven't really had the energy to work on Anubis in...
Much of the maintenance work I do for my packages involves correspondence with users about potential bugs. Sometimes, a user will encounter a problem that I cannot reproduce on my end. I thus try to recreate the bug in a pristine environment and ask my correspondent to do the same. This has become easier since Emacs...
On the book Half-Earth Socialism, an advocacy of a utopian ecological society that can stop the catastrophe of climate change. Lots of big problems hang over humans and other life on earth. I was born in the 1960s and this feels like the worst period in my country and world society I have lived through. But amidst...
Grammarly is sometimes thought by instructors to be a relatively benign writing tool app, akin to a sophisticated spelling and grammar checker. Bits of Grammarly screenshots (clipped from Barker’s video) That may have once been true, but as Kieran Barker, an educational associate for academic AI initiatives at...
While I don’t think Apple Podcasts itself has a “trim silence” feature, it’s popular in a bunch of podcast players. Overcast probably kicked it off with its “Smart Speed” function, but it’s in Pocket Casts, Castro, and I’m sure a bunch of other ones. The idea is that the player “listens” for silences in the podcast...
I wanted to do something fun like a game, so I decided to do a word search puzzle, I love solving puzzles but I've never created one myself so I thought it would be entertaining. I enjoyed making it! Update (Feb 18, 2026): After a productive discussion on Reddit and additional benchmarking, I found that the solutions I originally proposed (batched writes or using a synchronous connection) don't actually help. The real issue is simpler and more fundamental than I described: SQLite is single-writer, so any amount...
Back when I had a record player. HSS-CRCK-POP!“No!” my little sister shouts. It's her room and she's scared. “Last one,” I lie, cross-legged on a Garfield-colored rag rug. I can't listen alone. Those I use are starred. They are not recommendations as it is too soon, but that may change over time. Note that some suggestions are not necessarily Europe based, but let’s hope they are better at handling your data than Microsoft, for instance. The paintings of Gabriel Bella are well-known and often used, but very little is known about Gabriel Bella.
When omission becomes disinformation: (1) available at publication time, (2) changes analytical meaning of reported facts, (3) outlet’s authority means most readers stop there. On February 13, 2026, the New York Times published its lead story on the Bangladesh election. The headline: “Bangladeshis Vote in Droves for...
I observed Lent for the first time last year. I am not Catholic, but it was an overwhelmingly positive experience for me and I have been looking forward to doing it again this year. I'm writing this on Tuesday evening. Tomorrow is Ash Wednesday and I wanted to create a written plan for Lent so that I can refer back...
I devoured this said V.E. Schwab in a jacket quote either carefully written or carefully chosen because it references consuming. There is a secret race of creatures, the eponymous Book Eaters, that look like humans but are nourished by the words and ideas they osmose when they literally eat books. It's a little...
earlier this month, two post-punk albums were released on the same day. so i'm gonna be writing my thoughts about them. mizantrop - she past away title track for this album starts off with this monologue (translated from turkish): hello, today we have no news to refresh your zest for life. instead, we bring you a...
I have been building a GNU/Linux native Kodi remote control. As I could not find one. Using BeeWare Toga, Kodi JSON-RPC API and some experimenting, I built an open source Python application that can control Kodi. This is useful for e.g. windows or Linux tablets.
This text accurately reflects the main problem with AI: We are gradually losing our cognitive abilities, because we are ceasing to train our biggest muscle: the brain. “Vibe coding” satisfies the Builder. It feels great to see to pass from idea to reality in a fraction of a time that would take otherwise. But it has...
Yesterday, I discovered Mole. Running this deep clean and optimization command-line tool for the fist time reclaimed ~25GB storage space and removed a lot of junk. I also like its system monitor. In short, it's definitely a keeper.
Artificial intelligence is science fiction. No one has ever created "intelligence" in the form of a computer program. And it is debatable that anyone ever will. When people say "AI," they really mean LLMs (and occasionally other forms of machine learning). As I think about my stance on "AI," I am just talking about...

A few months ago I added a widget to this website that lets anyone quickly and anonymously message me. I had very little idea how that would actually go at the time, but since then it’s become my favorite feature I’ve added here. I’ve pretty much always had some contact info posted here and get occasional messages...

Hello! After spending some time working on the Git man pages last year, I’ve been thinking a little more about what makes a good man page. I’ve spent a lot of time writing cheat sheets for tools (tcpdump, git, dig, etc) which have a man page as their primary documentation. This is because I often find the man pages...
This is just a short-ish post to let you all know what I’ve been up to during the past few weeks. On Christmas Eve evening I decided that it would be the ideal time to update my contact details on WordPress. I have no idea why I should have attempted such a foolish thing at such an unsuitable time, but there is no...
Yesterday was a busy Monday so yet again, I am writing these notes on Tuesday. But hey, better late than never, right? Let’s dive into the weekly notes for week 7 of 2026! The vibe Practical, steady, and a little cozy: health check relief, home-office rhythm, sports on in the background, and just enough “new tool...
“Tenderness is the most modest form of love. It is the kind of love that does not appear in the scriptures or the gospels, no one swears by it, no one cites it… It appears wherever we take a close and careful look at another being, at something that is not our ‘self.’” “I have always felt that a human being could...
This week’s weeknote is another technical log of what I did to my site. Skip to the Link Roundup if it’s too technical! Should I do a separate series for web dev talk and how I am building my site—a bit like Shellsharks’ Devlog series? Let me know via Mastodon comments or my contact form (while I try to find a good...
I read this short post from the folkmoss over on Bear Blog the other day, and the sentiment really stuck with me. It’s not the internet you hate, it’s social media. The internet is awesome. It’s true - at least I think so. And it’s a trap I’ve fallen down hard recently. So much of the way we interact with the...
For some reason, after spending the best part of a decade in the tech industry, I’ve begun to feel a certain kind of way about the state of enterprise in the highly industrialized parts of the world. I can’t begin to imagine why. “Growth for the sake of growth is the ideology of the cancer cell”, the kids say. (I’ve...
Over a long weekend, between February 14-16, the 19th Tricota Cultural took place in Villa Ani Mi, a small village just north of where I’m currently living. As part of the local Carnaval celebrations in the Sierras Chicas, folks play music, dance and also celebrate with King Momo, represented by a big Papier-mâché...
February 2026. Turin. You left us in M** Bun at 6pm after a very late lunch, largely liquid, and it was time for an early night back at I Reali and a catch up on our respective blogs. But central Turin on a Friday night was just about to liven up, and Mrs RM insisted, insisted I tell you, that we popped in the...
Hi, Lycaina is here! From today on I'm moving from Blogger to BearBlog: NEW LINK I've been painfully reminded that Google has a monopoly on so much online, and additionally they have 100+ dead projects. So I'm slowly doing what I can to move away from google. Wish me luck
This post contains spoilers for Apple TV’s Pluribus, a really great show that you should ideally watch without having read anything about it. Pluribus — the newest show by Vince Gilligan (of Breaking Bad fame) — is a show that is refreshingly new in its ideas. After finishing it discussed its themes with some of my...
Days without turning off site blockers: 1 Took a long, long walk and felt a lot better. Also went to the library to take out three books. Reading is very calming for me. It also helps me be more comfortable with being bored & letting my mind wander.

“You see,” said Cacambo to Candide, as soon as they had reached the frontiers of the Oreillons, “that this hemisphere is not better than the others, take my word for it; let us go back to Europe by the shortest way.” “How go back?” said Candide, “and where shall we go? to my own country? The Bulgarians and the...
I'm on Mastodon, aka the Fediverse. A big reason people are there is because they do not like the big tech, corporate, algorithmic social media platforms, and they want more control of their social media identities and online lives. My Tribe # So it's hardly a surprise to see lots of anti-AI sentiment on the...
Baru saja berakhir libur panjang, tapi buat saya rasanya kayak dikejar setan. Sebelum liburan tim kami menyelesaikan program pelatihan yang jadi agenda besar awal tahun (tapi nggak termasuk kegiatan reguler yang diingat pimpinan). Jadi pas liburan saya benar-benar hibernasi dan hanya menyiapkan makanan menjelang...
A nice 2024 essay by Jim Nielsen about the process of “sanding” user interfaces he’s working on: One of the ways I like to do development is to build something, click around a ton, make tweaks, click around more, more tweaks, more clicks, etc., until I finally consider it done. The clicking around a ton is the...
Admittedly, this isn’t a typical Chinese drama post (but it has CDrama actors!), but I was so wowed by the Spring Gala Festival 5-minute performance, 贺花神, that I had to share it with everyone. This is the kind of performance that you need lots of context and knowledge to truly appreciate. Most Chinese audiences...
Despite all these attempts to start swinging the pendulum in the other direction, I am really struggling with my work environment lately. And by lately I mean the last three or four months. The last two have been especially taxing. When I was working at Meijer, I was there for just over seven and a half years. The...
February 17, 2026 I've often wondered if there was a way to switch between windows within the same application without using the Window menu. Fortunately, I just learned that there is! Thanks to Mac Geek Gab 1129 Quick Tip, I learned that you can use the keyboard shortcut Command + ` (command+backtick) to switch...
Last week, I saw a message from December 18th in our team’s Slack channel. It mentioned a minor bug that affects only a few users. The team responded, “Let me create a ticket, and we’ll prioritize accordingly.” You can guess the story; the ticket stayed at the bottom of the backlog for almost two months. A bug...

Unlike Alphabet, I have never run the world’s largest video hosting service. I am, however, the administrator of two of the internet’s most popular websites (you’re reading one, check out the other). Based on my expert experience, I believe that YouTube is either down because of caching or DNS. I Hear YouTube Is...
In my previous post, I talked about word-vomit series where I expressed my desire to make a routine of writing a post every single day. Ofcourse these posts will not be as good as regular blog posts, as I will be forcing myself to write in a limited amount of time. But I do believe that this series will help me to...
