I’ve had a OnePlus 7 Pro sitting in a drawer for a couple of years. I used it from 2019, found it too big, got a Pixel 5a, and now I’m on the Pixel 7a. The usual thing, fiddling with an old gadget that’s been kicking about doing nothing. It’s a nice phone with nice features. Shame it’s stuck on such an old version...
I’ve been part of boy-scouts for only three days in my life. I always admired them, but wasn’t able to keep up the discipline of regularly joining when I was a little boy. As much as I enjoyed nature, I preferred active sports. In my three days (and also thanks to my father), I learned one rule from them that I...
Hover for more info, click to enlarge. I ordered a dated planner for 2026 from a bookbinder friend of mine, who hand-sews notebooks and planners and rebinds books for ppl. I gave her my old one by Todavia as inspiration because I love their two-page weekly set up with the week on one side + a free space for writing...
I was and still am obsessed with words. They can sting and brighten, soothe and choke in the same instance. The same word said in a different tone can feel like the world is crushing under someone’s feet, at sea; A parting that divides context and literacy. As a kid, around 5th grade, I couldn’t bring myself to play...
Everybody who routinely takes screenshots on a Mac knows very well the motor memory heaven and hell that are the screenshotting shortcuts: ⌘⇧3 to grab the whole screen, ⌘⇧4 to grab part of it, hold ⌃ ahead of time to put the result in the clipboard, press space at the right moment to select a window, hold ⌥ at a...
These three essays orbit Melville’s “Bartleby, the Scrivener” from successive distances. The first attacks the narrator, the second attacks the attack, the third removes the hope of a clean vantage point. Each piece eats the previous one. Together they ask whether any act of understanding can avoid being an act of...
I don't think 'useless' websites and apps are the problem for me, it's more so using them in moderation. That ties in with improving time management so that I can do my hobbies. Main problems: Turning off site-blockers to do stuff Not having proper 'fun tech time' schedule (this must be flexible according to my uni...
In which I challenge myself to draw a pokemon every day until I stop Tues 02/03/2026 - Glalie It's still ice types which means there's still more than 2 feet of snow outside here. Scientific weather measuring going on. Sorry to the Glalie fans out there but like, this one I just hate. Snorunt's teeth are weird and...
For the past few months, my friend Dave has been working on his own TTRPG, documenting his misadventures on his personal blog. Time and time again, a game mentioned as inspiration has been Land of Eem, a whimsical and family friendly take on the genre that seemed like a perfect mix for my friend group. So, after...
January 2026. Radcliffe on Trent. When I came to Radcliffe to tick the micropub (temporarily closed so no return) in 2019 I’d asked a local; “What about the other pubs in Radcliffe ?” I asked. “Any good ?” “Nah. Too cliquey”. Well, perhaps too cliquey when this photo was taken, but I didn’t notice it last week. The...

We’ve recently been looking into optimizing rendering performance of the Perfetto UI on large traces. We discovered that there was some inefficiency in our data fetching logic, especially when you’re very zoomed out. In this case, there can be a lot of slices (spans) which are so small that they take less than one...

A buddy in infosec recently asked a question that hits the painful truth about containers: they feel disposable right up until you need evidence. “What logs need to be collected and what’s the best way to snapshot for further digging?” The trick is thinking in layers. A container is rarely “the whole crime scene.”...
I don't know how to properly raise this, but I've gotten at least 100 emails from various Zendesk customers (no discernible pattern, everything from Soundcloud to GitLab Support to the Furbo Pet Camera). Is Zendesk being hacked? I'll update the post with more information as it is revealed.

In days of old, link shortening tools were all the range. They addressed a specific issue with early social media services; especially Twitter, which had a character limit of 140 (remember those days). If you included a long link to a news article, or blog post, you were eating into the 140 count relatively fast....
Hace poco terminé de leer este libro y me fascinó, yo creo que se ha convertido en uno de mis libros favoritos. Fue muy único para mi porque nunca había leído algo así, desde el género hasta el formato en pequeños cuentos. Me inspiró bastante. Algo que me resultó curioso es que el libro termina sus narraciones en el...

Shortly after I began the year with some blessings, a friend sent me Lucille Clifton’s spare, splendid poem “blessing the boats.” We had met at a poetry workshop and shared a resolution to write more poetry in the coming year, so we began taking turns each week choosing a line from a favorite poem to use as a joint...

I recently posted a couple of Venetian-themed poems by Robin Saikia which had impressed me. Seeking to find out more about this little-known but clearly talented poet, I discovered that he had published, in 2020, a dramatic monologue titled A Very Fine Cat Indeed, devoted to Dr Johnson's beloved Hodge. Naturally I...
I often say that I hate GenAI, but I am not sincere when I do that. It's not that I, as a developer, want to write each if or case statement; I couldn't care less about this. While I'd love to be able to write in machine code, I work in ruby which is layers and layers higher. Sometimes, seeing good work simply...
In Part 2 of our current Hands-on SAP Dev live stream series on CXL with Patrice Bender, Patrice took some time to give us a glimpse of the power that CQL and CXL offers. It was in the context of answering a question from one of the live stream viewers (thanks Stubbs!) in the previous part, and the answer revealed...

Last week, I saw my boss use the Nespresso Inissia she kindly brought to the office to share, and let’s just say that before I even had a chance to feel stunned, she already had her steamy espresso in a cup. 30 seconds—that was how long it took from start to finish. Zero cleanup required, and you don’t even need to...

There was never anything so gallant, so spruce, so brilliant, and so well disposed as the two armies. Trumpets, fifes, hautboys, drums, and cannon made music such as Hell itself had never heard. The cannons first of all laid flat about six thousand men on each side; the muskets swept away from this best of worlds...
Trying to determine what it is that prevents a person, and by that I mean me, from having a series of good days back-to-back has been taking up more of my attention than usual as of late. I believe for myself it has a lot to do with patience. There are these things that I would like to see become a reality; some of...
The final book in Cooper's epic The Dark is Rising Sequence ties all of the loose ends up neatly in a quite satisfying way that doesn't feel forced. There's a lovely twist towards the end that plucks a heartstring or two but I won't spoil it here for anyone. I will say that I was quite impressed with the denoument;...
Books of Januari 2026 I started this year with re-reading "Pattern Recognition". This is the first book that I re-read within a year. Because I really enjoyed this book, I followed it with the other two books of the Blue Ant trilogy. Non fiction Ends of the Earth: Journeys to the Polar Regions in Search of Life, the...
I've owned the domain name hawksley.dev for a while now, but I've never done much with it aside from sending email. Over the weekend, I thought I might as well make good use of it and decided to create a blog. In the beginning, this site had a humble home page with some links to GitHub projects. A blog requires much...
Lucide icons is a superset of Feather icons. It has some really wonderful icons for interface design and is one of the most popular icon sets today. In the past, for my Elm projects, I've used Feather icons. In new Elm projects, I wanted to use Lucide Icons, only to discover that there is no Elm package to import...
LinkGood list/resource for things you can do around various giant conglomerates who have influence over the administration and/or are enablers of ICE. Dear Ciara, We bought a house! After a good 12—18 months of searching, numerous offers, a couple of auctions, and even tears, we have finally scored our own place. This is the news I’ve been dying to tell you. While I am nervous for the change in our financial situation—for the necessary budgeting and the lack of...
The title of my ending keynote at FOSDEM February 1, 2026. As the last talk of the conference, at 17:00 on the Sunday lots of people had already left, and presumably a lot of the remaining people were quite tired and ready to call it a day. Still, the 1500 seats in Janson got occupied and there was even a group of...

Just got a note in my work inbox: There's a spread of Chick-fil-A in the break room, courtesy of the franchise that just opened its doors next to our district admin building. I cannot eat Chick-fil-A. I have celiac disease, and those sandwiches are megaton gluten bombs that can and will turn my intestines into a...
I really wanted to like Regency Buck. Although I've enjoyed all of my Georgette Heyer reading so far, I was particularly excited to arrive at one with "Regency" in the title. She's most famous for fiction set in this period and now, after my introductory sojourn in the 1750s and the 1780s, I thought I had arrived at...
