I made a simple todo2ical script that converts todo.txt file into an ical file. It's not much really. I just wanted some nice way to get notifications for my due tasks without separate apps. You can add the files it produces as read-only external calendars to your calendar thing. Here's link to the source code:...
We kept our reservation for dinner to celebrate my brother's birthday and enjoyed a fine meal out. All while temperatures drop with the varying forecasts of heavy snow accumulation tomorrow. ⊕Currently Listening: Jeff Russo, Rufus Wainwright “San Francisco (Be Sure To Wear Flowers In Your Hair)”Reply via email
I have been holding on to some of these links for a while. December was a busy month and I needed most of January to be introverted. Let’s see what’s still relevant. Reading The Harvest Will Come by Joan Westenberg. This is from over a month ago, whoops. I read this essay just after writing my contribution to the...
IntroductionIn the past, I mentioned how I use Hugo on different devices (Android and Linux). This week I made a significant upgrade on how I use Hugo on Android. Instead of having only basic access to my Hugo blog for drafting content; I can now run hugo server locally on my phone and easily see the changes I make...

I often wake up with a random song as an earworm – and now I note them down for your enjoyment. This morning it was It’s That Time by Marlon Hoffstadt aka DJ Daddy Trance Reply by email
3 Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. 4 Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others. Philippians 2:3-4, The Bible Poem: Business is empathy They run from you because you drool for cash; They know...
"The new lingua franca of programming is English." "I don't look at code anymore. I don't look at diffs." "There is no way I can look at 3000+ diff patches anymore. It's all spec-driven." At first, it's a hard thing to grapple with as a cautious optimist. To not look at code anymore, and yet build things that span...
The web is getting worse, search engines are becoming more and more useless and AI crawlers are so greedy that by now they're almost indistinguishable from a DDoS attack. I had a few interesting discussions about this on Mastodon this week, and everybody is exhausted, frustrated and angry. What do we do about it? I...
Back on October 30, 2020, I published an anecdotal article about my rescuing a fallen public trash can in Gowanus. In that article, I posited a profound question: “If you do something heroic but don’t tell every person you know, did you do anything at all?” You may be able to infer from the fact I wrote an entire...
Otherplace: Boone November 7, 2015 “There’s something remarkably sad about a website that belongs to a person who is dead,” Tina says. Her bare feet are up on the dashboard of my car, the window cracked so that she can periodically ash her cigarette out of it. I don’t let anyone smoke in my car, but Tina is the...
How to cope with the fact that we ain't perfect and we have a lot of flaws? I mean, everyone loses sometimes, right? We ain't designed to win every time, I think. Lately, I've been thinking about it and noticed that in the last 180 days I lost much more than I won, and maybe that's how life is designed to be, and...
I read this article about "shared realities," and it obviously made me think of current events. I live in a red state, so whenever I'm meeting someone new, I always have to send out feelers and hints to find out where they stand. Which reality do they live in? Do they live in mine or do they live in the other one?...
No, really, that's what it's called: Fruity Game I found it on F-Droid last night while seeing if anyone has made a version of Fruit Ninja that hasn't been thoroughly enshittified in the name of PROFIT$ yet. And I was going to blog about something more serious today, except I cannot stop thinking about this game. I...
Flow charts and diagrams are not as fun as interactive prototypes, but they’re much more important to get right Nic Chan As a technologist, a large part of my job is making flow charts and diagrams to help inform design decisions. And Nic's right — as much as I'd love to be coding whizzy prototypes all day, these...

In an email to my friend Adam Roberts about Star Trek: The Next Generation — about which he has recently written eloquently — I told him this story: I was in high school when reruns of the canceled Original Series started getting traction, and my good friend Don was utterly devoted to the show. This was before home...
Breached light. Fluid notions. Twenty-fold wishes fulfilled. When the time comes, answer it with questions, peppered. While the security here is pretty Good: All the cameras are quaint. Getting by, they say in unison. And nowhere, I mean nowhere will you wonder while well-wishers whisper, Now do you see? Mist in...

The default design for Bear Blog's toast button looks good, but it has become stale for me. Thankfully, it can be completely customized through CSS! For the upvote button, I use the same appearance1 as the navigation buttons, except I made the font size slightly larger than them. button.upvote-button { font-family:...
One of the most potent themes in Stanisław Lem’s writing was the fallacy of first contact. Lem argued that we are just not ready for an actual meeting with something truly alien. That the most open-minded of us are close-minded on a cosmic scale. That sci-fi made us think that aliens will look like human with...
Check out As in guillotine... for more. NOTE: 2026 is kicking my ass left, right, and sideways, and instead of doomscrolling, I’ve been buried in a big day job project and pretending OOTP26 is a legit side gig, all while trying to survive my least favorite season. Instead of feeling defeated and skipping the...
The coin sits on the kitchen table between the pork hock and the rye bread. Jan turns it over with one finger, watching how the light catches the worn eagle on one side, the date on the other: 1863. “Dziadek’s coin,” Maria says, setting down three bowls. Steam rises from the barszcz, beet-red and smelling of...
So there’s this lady known as Mirtha Legrand; no, that isn’t her real name, but rather her stage name. She is quite the legend down there in Buenos Aires. She’s 98 now, and she hosted the same TV show for… 54 years. Not only that, her career in cinema had actually started in 1941, so literally before my dad was born...
January 2026. South Blackpool. Another 20 minutes wait for a tram at Blackpool Tower (I’m not making this up); I’d have walked the mile to the Tipsy Seagull quicker. Not only were we meeting Blackpool Jane, in actual Blackpool, we were joining her in the shadow of Bloomfield Road for craft beer and curry. South of...
Previously. Problem statement: add to starship the GitHub PR associated with the current git branch. The following starship custom module does the trick: [custom.github_pr] command = "bkt --ttl=10m --scope=\"$(git rev-parse --show-toplevel):$(git branch --show-current)\" -- gh pr view --json number --jq '\"#\" +...
That time a random song about giving up on New Year's Resolutions lead to committing to a year-long project The song in question - give it a watch and turn on closed captions for lyrics, etc Every year around the end of January I think about this song; partially because the subject matter of it being inspired by New...
Roshan: There is much Internet folklore about bugs where the issues seem like they could not be real or are simply a lay user mistakenly drawing relations between things incorrectly where these relationships are [[Veriphenia|nonetheless borne out to be true]]. This is a list of such 'veriphenic bugs' *...
I am back with Part 4 of the Everyday Defense track in my CybersecKyle Security How-To Series. The goal here is simple: make your browser boring to attackers without making your browsing miserable. Your lock screen is your first line of defense. Use a strong passcode (6 digits or longer) and keep notification...
Yesterday I was walking in the Oxfordshire countryside with my brother and walking friends. It was a gloriously sunny morning – the first in a long dreary while – and, for a wonder, it stayed that way for most of the day, only clouding over briefly in the early afternoon. Our walk began in the attractive little...
“The most regretful people on earth are those who felt the call to creative work, who felt their own creative power restive and uprising, and gave to it neither power nor time.” “In the wholeheartedness of concentration,” the poet Jane Hirshfield wrote in her beautiful inquiry into the effortless effort of...
Roughly three years and three months ago I executed what I call my Master-Switch Plan: I resigned from my stable, well-paid position at an excellent up-and-coming Japanese startup and hired myself. That same company immediately became my client, but now I was working for them only two days a week instead of five. I...
Coffee and Cigarettes is a set of 11 short movies Jarmusch shoot between 1986 and 2003. I have no idea how he got Benigni in 1986, but damn! He gets the best cast. Anyway: I'm not a fan of this movie, as the quality differs significantly between individual shorts. There are some which are OK (like Renée, Jack Shows...
I collect cool, interesting links spread all over the web and share them here in daily posts. Hope you enjoy! More of them in the archive. Today I’m excited to release a new tool for the AT Protocol: Sequoia. This is a CLI tool that can take your existing self-hosted blog and publish it to the ATmosphere using Standard.site lexicons. If you haven’t explored ATProto you can find a primer here, but in short, it’s a new way to publish content to the web...
I started the new year by getting kicked off Cloudinary’s free tier for image storage. Deciding that I do not want to have to migrate ever again, I have architected a simple way to get off of SaaS/Cloud services and still maintain control of my media. I was not willing to pay $99 a month for a hosted image service...
A winter hike on a familiar loop became an exercise in observation and experimentation. Without pressure to capture the perfect shot, I discovered new perspecitves, practiced composition and new techniques.

Stripe is famous for having some of the best product docs, largely because they are "designed to feel like an application rather than a traditional user manual". I spent much of the last week building and writing the docs for Scour, and I am quite proud of the results. Interactive DocsScour is a personalized content...
