“I did try to found a heresy of my own; and when I had put the last touches to it, I discovered that it was orthodoxy.” GK Chesterton When I was much younger, I tried to found my own religion. We all do at one time or another: how can I take what everyone is saying and combine it to map the ultimate way to live this...
"Fabricatore di Teriaca" (Maker of Theriac) from the Gli abiti de veneziani (1754) by Giovanni Grevembroch, translated by René Seindal.
Global Network Navigator (GNN); via Ford & Mason Ltd. If Adam Curry's MTV.com in 1993 was a text-based index of music reviews and industry gossip — basically the same format as a Gopher site or FTP server — then Global Network Navigator (GNN) aimed to be something a little more high-minded. It aspired to be an...
What’s the saying? “Necessity is the mother of invention.” Maybe in this case, “necessity is the mother of DIY.” I invented absolutely nothing. I merely became so fed-up with (i) looking for my phone’s USB cable when I need it, or (ii) relying on sub-par file transfer applications, that I have finally fixed my...
January 28, 2026 Devices, apps which should I use, and for what? Do I have to pick one and commit to it? I always feel that pressure. MacBook Pro or iPad? Drafts, Bear, MarkEdit, BBEdit, or iA Writer? Why can't I just use them all? Here's the thing: I always force myself to stick with a single app, and I constantly...
Over the last few weeks, three new products have announced themselves on Hacker News to great success, each making the frontpage: Sprites (fly.io) with 508 votes and hit #7 exe.dev with 457 votes and hit #2 shellbox.dev with 316 votes and hit #4 All three have a very simple pitch: they will give you full access to...

Abstract art is attractive for its ideas, the ideas that Kazimir Malevich explained to be pure creation as opposed to art's typical imitation of nature.
I hate everything. I used to really love technology. And I guess I still do, but I hate what a lot of tech, especially software, has become. It used to be either an app was free or it wasn’t. Usually the free stuff came with some other way to monetize itself (remember the bars that used to be forced on you when you...
I collect cool, interesting links spread all over the web and share them here in daily posts. Hope you enjoy! More of them in the archive. New features in Android theft protection. Special mention to Brazil, where from now on, two of these features are enabled by default when setting up a new phone. Neocities is...
This is my entry for the IndieWeb Carnival of January 2026, hosted by Jeremiah It honestly took me a while to finish out of lack of moments to be inspired for it. I feel as if I wrote sentence by sentence in a range of weeks. This is enough, it is good enough, and it is written as intended. With Love. The first...
In the famous fifth chapter of John Stuart Mill’s Autobiography, “A Crisis in My Mental History,” we learn about the moment that Mill realized that he was in very great trouble: From the winter of 1821, when I first read Bentham, and especially from the commencement of the Westminster Review, I had what might truly...

Josh Tumath on the new text scaling feature in Chrome Canary:Just like how the <meta name=viewport> tag tells the browser that your website is designed to work for small viewport sizes, the <meta name=text-scale> tells the browser, 'Hey, I've designed my website to still work if the user increases their OS text...
Reworked the navigation, and added a new section for "cosmology and belief" and there two pages: "dualism" and "gender and sexuality".
“There are more things … likely to frighten us than there are to crush us; we suffer more often in imagination than in reality.” “The truth is, we know so little about life, we don’t really know what the good news is and what the bad news is,” Kurt Vonnegut observed in discussing Hamlet during his influential...
Dear Ciara, There is change on the horizon. I’m not going to say anything about it yet, mostly in fear of jinxing things, but this change will likely have a significant impact on my future. While it is a positive change, there’s so much to it that I am beginning to feel overwhelmed. This is exacerbated by the fact...
You have to learn when a hobby or interest is truly detrimental or if it has just been demonized by the productivity cult. Sometimes people lament that all day they spend time on things they enjoy, but somehow it’s… bad? I understand that you have to rip yourself away from some enjoyable things for other...
As a teen, I considered myself a "Grammar Nazi". I would frequently correct people's grammar, asserting that I knew the one "right" way to speak. In my early 20s, I learned about how (some) dictionaries are made. They look and see how words are actually used by regular people, then the dictionary records...
This is an entry from my journal in which I comment at length on how the desire for control can be useful and harmful. Another rainy day. The clouds have been low in the valley. I can barely see the opposite side, even though it is about a hundred metres away. Every time of the year has its beauty. This is no...
January 2026. Cleveleys. Blackpool. This Blackpool tram map is getting some use. More use than the actual trams that Friday, anyway. Two uncoventional new pubs in the GBG in Cleveleys, but the Wobblinn has one thing that might attract the Pub Men. No, not the seating, or the fire extinguisher; it’s the beer...
YouTubeThis is one to keep an eye on when it premiers March 1 on HBO. It stars Jason Bateman, David Harbour, and Linda Cardellini, but more importantly, it comes from writer and creator, Steve Conrad who is also the mind behind the fantastic Patriot as well as my favorite Perpetual Grace Ltd.
Last Sunday, approximately 1.5 years after its launch, my old website got retired1, and this new one got published. Maybe you’ve seen it already these past couple of days – if not, then welcome! In this post, I want to give you a glimpse behind the scenes, some decisions I made and why, and where we’re heading....
Musings and ramblings on programming and things
“Value capture is… where your values are rich and subtle or in the process of developing that way. And you get put in a setting or near a technology or an institution that presents you with a simplified, typically quantified version, and the simplified version takes over.” That’s C. Thi Nguyen, professor of...
Got with Eli and Nick for lunch. We'd been trying to get together for (checks notes... 2 years and 7 months!) and we weren't going to let a forecasted blizzard foil our plans. ⊕ Currently Listening: Helado Negro “Best For You and Me”Reply via email

(Photo by Microsoft 365 on Unsplash) Somebody, somewhere, is always one click away from chaos. Sometimes it’s deliberate. Most of the time it’s accidental. Either way, the goal is the same: design the environment so one human can’t accidentally (or intentionally) torch the place. And you’re right to call it out:...

Dear reader,Have you ever found a cool or interesting website, a blog, or anything that you bookmarked, but realized months or even years later that you hardly ever visit it? Or maybe you have a habit of checking these sites regularly? Perhaps you would like to have more control over the content you see and rely...
I’d guess a lot of people know that the original 1980 Pac-Man ends accidentally with an iconic, glitchy, and impassable “kill screen.” Many people will also nod with recognition at hearing the kill screen is level 256, a number that immediately gives some ideas on what might have happened. But this fun 11-minute...
When I was a kid the grocery store had a magazine rack when you walked in. That magazine rack also had comic books on it. If you had a spare two dollars you could pick up the latest Batman, Spiderman, or X-Men title. Many shops with a magazine or newspaper section sold comics. You didn't need to drive an hour to the...
This has been a feline-heavy month. I mean, every month is feline-heavy when you live with five cats and your sister with another five, but this one's been special. So let's see. GamingI've played Hidden Cats in Istanbul1 and can't wait to get my hands in more titles of this series. So far I've only got this one and...
Mozilla is in a state We have known the likes of Meta and the Entity Formally Known As Twitter have not been serious organisations for a long time (not that it stops them from causing enormous harm), and through the course of the last two years Microsoft (or is that Microslop?) and Google have been doing everything...
On days when the sun ravages the earth I can see where you buried your dead—cracked tombstones, paint stripped off the bones, three-hundred-year-old names lost to time and the tide. Yes, the tide, the deep blue, water trapped where it was never supposed to stay for very long. I know it’s not really a tide. Let’s...
AutoDescriptor: Added page description via AutoDescriptor bot [[File:Screenshot DMV Cancellation of Real ID Email Notification.png|thumb|The email I got sent. I just received my BYOK device and I couldn’t be happier with it. One thing that I have been experimenting with since I received it are different workflows. Most mornings I do a brain dump in a daily note with the heading # Morning Pages . Over the years I have used different devices for this (Pomera DM250, iPhone,...
The most popular link last time was this commentary on liking January, with Gerald's parsnips second. Are you in a computer literacy bubble? Probably. My obsession with Susan Orlean's fashion has only been enhanced by this closet tour. All her shoes are in identical stackable boxes with a photograph of the shoe stuck...
My ILsee program for viewing Interlisp source files is written in Common Lisp with a McCLIM GUI. It is the first of the ILtools collection of tools for viewing and accessing Interlisp data. Although ILsee is good at its core functionality of displaying Interlisp code, entering full, absolute pathnames as command...
I’m not hardcore into travelling, maybe because every year or other year I travel to Aruba and Curaçao to visit family. This takes a bite into my vacation time and travel budget. Being a deaf solo traveller with a chronic illness also means I prefer travelling to cities that are accessible. I mostly take a […]
As a Gen Z this has been my whole life. I left (didn't delete, unfortunately) Instagram in 2024. All my friends have my phone number but only one speaks to me regularly (without prompting with a link), and it took ages for her to realize that I didn't want to be bombarded with TikToks. I just wanted to know what...
