I’ve been reading about empathy over the past year or so, and a chapter from the book On Becoming a Person by Carl Rogers caught my attention. The full chapter title is: “Dealing With Breakdowns in Communication – Interpersonal and Intergroup”. Notes Rogers suggests a rule for debates and arguments: each person can...
Just wanted to give my 2 cents to a post by Yunzi. For posterity and because it's short, here is the post content: Did a search on Bear for 5 of my interests. One of which is my other blog. 4 returned nothing. 1 returned a single other blog - which in fairness is pretty good (no not mine). So is the search working,...
This site is hosted on the same server as The New Leaf Journal, and I use Cloudron to manage the server. Beginning around early spring last year, The New Leaf Journal began to crash once every few days when Cloudron health checks failed (I have not had any similar issues with this site, which is much lower traffic)....
You would expect such visionary minds would be able to predict that sleeping with a leopard eventually ends with your face being eaten up by said beast. In this piece on Fast Company, Apple CEO Tim Cook, venture capitalist Vinod Khosla, Joe Rogan and other intellectuals (irony) regret the violent turn of events seen...
Many months ago I asked around about bookmark solutions. People went straight to things like Pocket and Instapaper, but that wasn't at all what I meant. My question wasn't about saving articles to read later (I use Raindrop for this btw), but links for cool stuff, browser games, reference links etc. I first tried...
January 2026. Bradford. 2.9 miles in 37 minutes from the Crown down to the Alhambra, and a sorry tale of pub death awaits, despite a year as the UK’s Capital of Culture (and it IS a cultural giant). This is the extract from CAMRA’s marvellous pub guide showing the area west of the ring road. Note the grey “P“s....

“What is wild cannot be bought or sold, borrowed or copied. It is. Unmistakable, unforgettable, unshamable, elemental as earth and ice, water, fire and air, a quintessence, pure spirit, resolving into no constituents. Don’t waste your wildness: it is precious and necessary. In wildness, truth.” Once, while writing...
Now, when it comes to technology, I'm actually pretty conservative. There have only really been two key moments where I've got excited about technology. Seeing a Mac for the first time Writing applications in Ruby on Rails All the rest were broken promises. But I think I've now got a third moment. I have seen the...
The astonishing temperatures over January came to an end a in a few moments after the arrival of this cloud of dust. Fat ice cold rain drops followed as the clouds flickered and rumbled. We had about 40 minutes of sparse cooling rain with a delightfully cool wind rushing around the houses. A cold front is always...
As we entered a new year, Brian's wish was to see more of the outside world. He can see the garden, but knows there is more. After chatting with Mark, it was agreed that a portable fish bowl should be purchased. This would be the safest way for Brian to experience a wider world. And so the journey begins. Brian and...
I’ve been using miniflux for ages. And yet I never bothered to customize it much. Its vanilla settings are great out-of-the-box – as it should be! That said, it’s quite straightforward to add custom CSS to miniflux. I found two themes that are visually appealing: solarized catppuccin latte Copy the CSS snippet, go...
My friend Dom wrote a long post yesterday about his feelings around coding with AI over on his blog titled "Vibe coding a Gemini Capsule and learning a life lesson in the process", which I highly recommend reading. As it happens, I needed to solve a problem a few days ago and decided to give vibe coding a try, and I...
A month ago I published “Look Back at 2025” where I mentioned that the past year has been super stable and how grateful I was for it. This state didn’t last much longer. I lost my job, one of my best friends was diagnosed with a cancer and another good buddy of mine had a heart attack. Fuck off January, I’m glad...
This month’s Indieweb Carnival topic is the “Meaning of life,” hosted by Jeremiah Lee, and although I usually take breaks between participating, this one tickled me a lot. My answer is probably going to be a bit rambly, but I’ve tried to at least form it into some semblance of a through-line, which was difficult to...
David Hume’s tomb was one of a few sites at a cemetery in Edinburgh that have been vandalized with “disturbing occult-style paraphernalia,” according to The Guardian. [photograph via The Guardian]The Guardian reports: A tour guide made the discovery at the Old Calton burial ground. It included a drawing of a naked...
Fresh for 2026, "The Weight of Sound" from Crystal Lake is classic metalcore; breakneck galloping rhythm session, demonic vocals, technical guitar, touches of synth/effects. Somewhat of a tune in there. From its piano ballad intro, "Coma Wave" transitions through a gorgeous guitar solo that's almost "classic rock"...

Self-hosting an e-book library was always on my radar, but there never seemed to be a solution that checked all the boxes. Mainly, I wanted the ability to read books from my Kobo (not sure if they are only a Canadian thing, they are similar to a Kindle in many ways), and be able to still borrow books from the...
I've been sticking to a sketching routine recently: every day I draw at least once face.Faces are different for me than any other kind of drawing. Somewhere in the process the face looks real enough for me to recognize it as a human being, if it's a good drawing. About 30% of what I draw looks like a face to me....
Whether discussing wine, spirits, perfumes, or incense, there is much back and forth on the subject of quality. On the one hand, there are the connoisseurs flashing their three-plus digit purchases on enthusiast forums, and on the other, there are the humble, salt-of-the-earth naysayers gleefully reminding them of...

I swear (I assume) I'll get back to having Actual Thoughts soon. There's just a ton of reading about AI in education that is stuck in my head right now, trying to turn itself into...something. For this interpretation I have picked an emotional song from the legendary Haris Alexiou: https://wwwyoutubecom/watch?v=MZQfbcWDP2g. Full moon, like many of Haris’ own writings provides insight into the emotional world of a woman. Below are the original lyrics, my faithful translation of them into English, and...
I write a lot of Makefiles. I use it not as a command runner but as an ad-hoc build system for small projects, typically for compiling Markdown documents and their dependencies. Like so: And the above graph was generated by this very simple Makefile: graph.png: graph.dot dot -Tpng $< -o $@ clean: rm -f graph.png (I...
I had the honor and pleasure to hand over this prize to its first real laureate during the award gala on Thursday evening in Brussels, Belgium. This annual award ceremony is one of the primary missions for the European Open Source Academy, of which I am the president since last year. As an academy, we hand out...
I love to discover new artists and bands and when I found something that I think is great, I can't not share it with the world, so I thought of doing posts about it. These would be a series of post where I share the music I've found recently, it could be new or old. I know that I already have the videoroll posts,...

Continued From Part 1 It's late-afternoon in a working class part of town. The houses are spacious, but they're cramped together, as if a city planner 80 years ago had a quota to fit as many homes on a block as physically possible. There's a man walking down the street, heading home. He walks the same path he's...

What do you complain about the most? Everything. Thank you for your time. Look, I don’t mean that in a negative way. I mean it in a dedicated way. Some people collect stamps. Some people run marathons. I maintain a broad and diversified complaint portfolio. I complain about things while they are happening. I...

The "Venetia citta nobilissima et singolare" (1581) by Francesco Sansovino is a detailed description of Venice, as it once was.
Homeowners Associations (HOAs) started as a way for neighbors to work together and keep property values up. The idea was that if everyone follows basic rules (like not painting your house neon pink), the whole neighborhood stays nice and homes are worth a bit more. Studies show homes in HOA neighborhoods are usually...

If you haven't watched all of season 1 you need to bounce out of this page right now. Right Now Get Out Hit The Back Button. Right so, a while back I did a long post about how if you didn't like the pacing of the first season you were wrong. Well, you're still wrong but I deleted it because I hadn't finished the...
I began the month without much intention to read. My focus was the Book Club, since the book was rather big compared to other months. However, I ended up finishing five books and still reading two. Let’s recap. First, I read and finished in a couple of days The Bookshop Woman by Nanako Hanada. I borrowed this book...
Maybe the state of the web today is getting me down a little, but I decided to revisit my Web Manifesto from years ago and talk (and rant) a little about my experience online these days.

I liked the angry website Bugs Apple Loves because it’s hitting on something that got me worried in recent months: Apple has been bad at bugs for a while now, but we might be overfocusing on giving them crap solely for some of the most visible – even visual – Tahoe stuff. This is a condensed list at the time of...
January 30, 2026 The Macalope Based on who he likes to hang out with on a Saturday night, one wishes Apple CEO Tim Cook were a bit more of a homebody. I also made a special appearance answering an audience question. #ReclaimConstitution is a non-commercial initiative to further...
(or the physics of Duality & Causality) From high-school physics we know that Light is special. It travels through space and time at an insanely high speed (~300 million meters per second). Unlike sound, it is a wave that can propagate in a vacuum. If you were attentive in school, you might even remember how the...

Recently fixing a few bugs that made the...
Most of us think of ourselves as thinking creatures that feel, but we are actually feeling creatures that think. ― Jill Bolte Taylor If you’re not feeling as good about life as you want to be, that’s okay. If you feel stressed about a lot of things, that’s okay. If you get nervous, that’s okay. If you feel...
