I am today filled with DEADLIEST ENVY, specifically of Mrs. Columbo, She Who Is My Tiny Wife, against whom I have no defense and who, by law, is entitled to a bite of whatever I’m having1. For today she enjoyed a privilege known to few, but dreamed of by many: SHE GOT TO PET SPUD THE FRIGGIN’ CAPYBARA. Fuck, it’s...
Every new year, I think about the bookshop where I worked as a teenager. Specifically, a shift I always did on 24th December. While the shop was open that day, we were very busy with last-minute Christmas shoppers. Then after closing the staff stayed for an extra two hours to turn what had been a festive wonderland...
December 2025. Sheffield. Back in Sheffield I suddenly found myself unable to walk past the Wellington before the steep 10 minute walk home. Must be my gammy leg etc etc. 2 years ago I named the Welly my favourite pub in Sheffield, then promptly stopped visiting it. It’s like the Manager of the Month curse. First...
It’s the second steep of a relatively gentle green tea. I’m going with about 170 degrees Fahrenheit and though it’s recommended to brew gong fu style with short steepings, I’m brewing for a couple of minutes with fewer leaves this go around. I leave my tea for a moment and walk away. Later… 20 minutes? 30 minutes?...
Philosophy has spent 2,500 years asking “What is true?” when the urgent question was always “What kind of constraint is this, and does someone profit from my belief that it’s unchangeable?” Deferential Realism doesn’t care whether your epistemology is justified—it asks whether your constraint claim serves extraction...
Most Australia states, with the reported exception of Queensland, are in the grip of a heatwave. Temperatures in our part of the world, the NSW Central Coast, are expected to reach the high thirties, Celsius, on Saturday. That’ll be a little too warm at our place here, which doesn’t have AC. We’ll go into Sydney,...
If, by the end of January, Elon doesn’t fix this bullshit with Grok generating unconsentual porn of users, as well as allowing people to edit photos to threaten murdering jews, lynching black people with full on slurs that I’d hate to say. I will be forced to cancel X Premium and leave that platform, even though it...
I hope everyone knows by now that I’m very much a fan of this series, and therefore is not surprised I had preordered this story–or by the fact that between the reading slump and ::gestures at the world:: I’m reviewing it over a month after it was actually released. Since shit is not likely to stop raining down all...
Cool links delphitools is an amazing collection of small, useful tools. Like this paper sizes reference, something I have had to search for before and wade through annoying websites to find information for. I like the daily game enclose.horse, where you enclose a horse with fences. I’ve played three days so far and...
In which I challenge myself to draw a pokemon every day until I stop Weds 01/07/2026 - Treecko AGDQ week continues! Here's our final starter from Gen 3, and what a little guy it is! Starting as an unassuming gecko, evolving into a 'feathered raptor but the feathers are leaves' and then finally into a stoned-looking...
I sit down at my desk after a long shower, my face sore from laughing, and think of you. To T, N, A, J, and J, lights of my life

“The universe is old, big, and empty. In comparison, we are new and small.” So begins an interesting and fun article on a big question of perennial popular concern by Luke Elson (University of Reading) in the latest issue of Ethics. Observations of the vastness of the universe in comparison to tiny little us—the...
Recently, Ava wrote this post. I've been thinking about something similar for a while. Here are my added thoughts (read Ava’s post first for the complete picture). The personalities we build always have masks, either in real life or online. AI didn’t change it; it made it easier. I think the trust was always...
My youngest son wanted to refresh his gaming youtube channel with a new name and logo. His current one is something he whipped up in canva a year ago. He used to change it often. I had made him a logo and such when he had his Tornado themed gaming channel but he and a buddy were running around with usernames...
I am very sympathetic to free software. (And I regret not using more software of this kind.) On the Free Software Foundation blog, Jason Self reinforces the importance of the four freedoms of FOSS in the face of machine learning — which, in this context, is confused with what is commonly referred to as “artificial...
Dear Viola, It’s snowing just now as I write this, just outside the window at work. It’s not a beautiful filmic snow, drifting with fat romantic flakes, not at all. Instead it’s angry snow, coming down hard and fast, snow that wants to be rain and is mad that the temperature won’t allow for it. As an act of...
One of my students recently got into Fallout 4 (thanks, Prime), and they are talking my ear off about the game. It's actually fun to listen to. I don't play a lot of video games; instead I tend to find a game I like and play it to death. Break the hell out of it. Learn so much lore I qualify as Hopeless. In short, I...
Malmö's wintery nights It has been a bit cold and slighty snowy here recently and so I have taken my camera out a couple of times, once (before it snowed) just on a walk to test if it was possible to get anything ok handheld at night on it, and once more recently to see how the snow would impact it and if I could...
I came across a convenient way to send webmentions from my terminal using a simple Bash script. This page on the IndieWeb wiki includes a shell script one-liner. It references an older version of the webmention standard, but I was able to figure it out and get it working with my setup. I have the following in a file...
New pixel art sprite. The character is Yuzu from Citrus who has a gyaru style.
Hello! This past fall, I decided to take some time to work on Git’s documentation. I’ve been thinking about working on open source docs for a long time – usually if I think the documentation for something could be improved, I’ll write a blog post or a zine or something. But this time I wondered: could I instead make...
Ten, twenty years ago customers over at large corporations would often ask me what hardware they’d need to run my software. As software developers, we’d tend to be rather blasé about such questions: “whatever you have lying around!”. If pressed, we’d say you’d need this much RAM and that much storage. We thought we...
Two centuries ago, a small group of brilliant and troubled young people trembling with the unprocessed traumas of their childhoods laid in their poems and letters and journals the foundational modern mythos of love. Although none but one of them lived past their thirties, they touched the lives of generations to...
Congress gave Trump a free pass for bombing Iran – his attack on Venezuela is the logical consequence, by Alex Rikleen. A new, old type of lawlessness as Trump attacks Venezuela — and an opening for a better America , by Chris Geidner. Five Facets of the Attack on Venezuela by the Rogue Nation the US Has Become, by...
Going back to 2021, I have made it a tradition at The New Leaf Journal to ring in the new year by celebrating our most-visited articles of the previous year. Readers will find my past reviews of the years that were in 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024. In this post, we add 2025 to the list in what will be our biggest...
After my lukewarm experience with Mistborn I didn’t really think I’d ever go back to Brandon Sanderson. But Tress of the Emerald Sea was really good, so I decided to get back out of The Cosmere, and go back to Sanderson’s Special Projects, this time with The Frugal Wizard’s Handbook for Surviving Medieval England....
Two prints, from the 1600s, depicting the production in public of the wonder-medicine theriac, at the Testa d'Oro pharmacy at Rialto.
Provector is a really useful web app for making simple SVG graphics. I find it really handy for throwing together simple logo ideas.
So here's a story I just thought about because I saw a link to the Italian post on Mastodon which triggered a memory in me. During my last year of University, in the winter of 2008/2009, I spent a few months in Italy, where I did an internship in an Italian tech company in a small town in the region of Veneto, not...
I am not much of a gamer (as you can clearly see on the game revies page), but I do game. Recently, the Adventure Game Hostpot site (aka THE site for adventure game fans, but it's a long story) published their top games of the last 25 years list. I am sad to report that I played only few of them: #25 – Foolish...

Empezó a enojarse, empezó...
You might not encounter them often in polished fonts unless you’re knee-deep into typography, but: fonts have bugs, too. Paul van der Laan on Mastodon: Did anyone ever notice that Avenir LT has some serious errors in the descender lengths of p and q in certain weights? Florian Hardwig adds: It’s one of the things...

It should be clear by now that Charles Darwin's Voyage of the Beagle is much more than a log of scientific notes. Descriptions of nature and its mysteries abound—we'll see them in the next episode—but his book is also a window into his own character, an adventure story, and a reminder of the glaring ethical blind...
