Okay gang listen I am a very casual birder: I’ve got a Sibley’s and a NatGeo, a pair of extremely decent store-shelf-grade binoculars, and I don’t generally go anywhere beyond a 3-mile walking-radius around my human home; y’ain’t findin’ me eatin’ oatmeal on Attu in neon pants, is my point. NEVER THE DANG LESS, I...
Had a grand scheme of using this opportunity to sum up 2025 with a tidy recap, but alas — I'm lucky to get out of pajamas. +Currently Listening: Brianna Kelly “Marigolds”Reply via email
It seems these days my internet bubble is all about digital independence, the exodus from platforms run by fascist surveillance capitalists, and self-hosting. Right on! Mein Ausstieg aus dem Apple-Ökosystem (My Pull-Out From the Apple Ecosystem) by Gunnar Lott Die Känguru-Rebellion (dubbed in English) by Marc-Uwe...
January 06, 2026 Joan Westenberg Start a blog. Start one because the practice of writing at length, for an audience you respect, about things that matter to you, is itself valuable. Start one because owning your own platform is a form of independence that becomes more important as centralized platforms become less...
Today I received the new battery for my hut’s off-grid solar panel setup. I will now be reliably online during my evening/night hours (the timezone is Europe/Athens). I installed the battery by myself by reading the manual and paying close attention to the wiring that was already in place. My electrician friend had...
From Martin A. Schwartz: Productive stupidity means being ignorant by choice. Focusing on important questions puts us in the awkward position of being ignorant. One of the beautiful things about science is that it allows us to bumble along, getting it wrong time after time, and feel perfectly fine as long as we...
Five years ago today – on the very day of Epiphany – I got up in the morning and found myself apparently unable to see with my left eye. I say 'apparently' because, when I covered my right eye, I found I could see perfectly well with my left; the problem, as I soon discovered, was with my brain. In fact, I had had a...
(Get to all the parts in this series via the series post.) In wrapping up the end of part 1 we looked forward to creating the simplest kind of reuse module, not only as an important fundamental building block but as a base for further understanding and exploration (especially when we start looking closer at...
Reaching my second burn-out with #Japanese . I'm so ready for my #Dutch course. But I also don't want to mess up my Anki stats 😭 Thank you for following my feed! ♥ Leave a reply here.
AutoDescriptor: Added page description via AutoDescriptor bot The [[wikipedia:Dead Internet theory|Dead Internet theory]] claims that all Internet content is now posted by bots and so on in order to control the population and whatnot. I don't think the population is particularly controlled, but I do think that a lot...
You are a demon made of glass and pain. And yet, you must skate. Skate Story website I stay fairly up to date with games that are coming out, though it’s pretty rarely that I actually play them brand new. So when I say I bought Skate Story on day one after playing the demo, that’s high praise because that never...
In Christian churches that follow the Gregorian calendar, today is the Epiphany, which commemorates the Magi visiting the baby Jesus. It also marks the end of the Twelve Days of Christmas (though it is not one of the twelve days itself). I grew up calling it Little Christmas—in fact, when I was a kid, I thought the...
Looking around the internet, it's clear that digital representations have become cheap, too perfect, and easily fabricated, and the offline world is increasingly the primary source of confirmation. It's really interesting to see this happening, because it's not something I would have ever seen coming five years ago....
Selamat tahun baru!
As an engineering manager, I have various conversations and make decisions about compensation changes after promotions and annual reviews. People are sometimes satisfied with decisions; sometimes not. Discontent is higher when they believe they have exceeded expectations but have not received sufficient reward....
Crossing Osaka's Yodo River, we can see two of Osaka's many bridges: the New Yodogawa bridge in green, and behind it the Nagara Bridge in white. 大阪の淀川を渡ると、大阪の数多くの橋のうち2つが見える。緑色の新淀川大橋と、その奥に白い長柄橋だ。
I’ve been blogging for more than a couple of decades now, in one place or another (and boy how time does fly when you think about it), and it’s always been fun to scatter words out into the world and see if anything sticks. I’ve made some good friends this way, and hopefully I’ll make a few more before I’m done (I...
This week’s notes cover the tail end of 2025 and the first few days of 2026. It was another short week with New Year’s Day off on Thursday, then right back to work on Friday. The vibe Late 2025 stayed about as quiet as it gets. Mostly calm and steady, with a few quick spikes of anxiety mixed in. Highlights The older...
Well here we are once again, starting over another year! The first set of weeknotes is coming out at last. Here’s how things went! 🎉 Happy New Year you all! 2025 is over already and we must pave the way to a new tomorrow, one day after another! 2026 is upon us! 🍚 The other day we went to eat out at a Korean food...
I was recently asked by a fellow blogger how I would prefer to be credited in a blog post they were working on. This brought to mind an idea I have been thinking about for a while: how could I indicate the way I would prefer a post on my website to be cited? By having this information readily available, anyone who...
I’d like to try and post more this year. Ideally these would be less-polished, more-frequent updates on what I’m thinking about / working on. Ongoing Projects AuroraGPT: Large Language Models for Scientific Applications on leadership-class supercomputers1. Additional details can be found in some of my recent talks:...
"...So here I am. I'm right back at it again. Just like I've always said: 'If you're too cool for school, I ain't here to make no friends.' Listening to these lyrics written by a band called 'A Day to Remember', I realize that I'm just a few hours from going back to work after a long vacay. It's been a while since...
I’ve known for a while that I want to add a statistics page to my blog. Just for the fun of tinkering with code, without any deeper reason. In the summer, I wrote down my ideas on a few Obsidian pages and looked around to see what options were available for data visualization. It’s nicer and more intuitive to...

We are life members of the National Trust so try and get out to see as many locations in a year as possible. One of the highlights that always brings us back to make repeat visits is the Christmas decorations - different in every house each year but also different between each of the great houses and often reflect...
On a near daily basis, I yearn to do meaningful things, important things, and I am often left unsatisfied. I'm an incredibly passionate person. I love programming. I spent about a year as a local journalist for a site I made, and produced the best local political coverage I've ever seen for my city. I'm incredibly...
I often wake up with a random song as an earworm – and now I note them down for your enjoyment. This morning it was Sailor, Sail On by Atarashii Gakko! Reply by email
Drop the race and gender material from your course and the Plato readings, or teach a different course. You have a day to decide. That’s a paraphrase of what Martin Peterson, professor of philosophy at Texas A&M University, was told by university officials today about his upcoming “Contemporary Moral Problems”...
In which I challenge myself to draw a pokemon every day until I stop Tues 01/06/2026 - Torchic Continuing our Awesome Games Done Quick coverage this week, here's the next Gen 3 starter; the cute fire chocobo chick whose evolutionary path is probably one of the most regrettable of any starter. I could be wrong! I'm...
The Chinese year of the Snake has been a good one for me. I wonder what the year of the Horse holds in store. Maybe it’s best not to know. On the whole 2025 was good. I launched a new website, The Markdown Handbook, and began writing a travel blog (to be announced). Oh, and my late-life career as a gardener finally...
Perhaps the only ever musical that’s about a buggy piece of software. From the inimitable Cabel Sasser, this 2006 video about Saints Row, with three songs and a goddamn reprise at the end. It’s very good. my car door’s freaking out it seems to be forever in the concrete barricade I wonder how I’m ever gonna drive...
The recent Appleseed reignited my interest in classic Japanese SciFi. I started to look for more of Shirow's works and boom - Black Magic M-66 was there. I have never heard of it before! The anime is a 1987 OAV which clocks at 47 minutes. There used to be lots of low-cost straight to VHS releases of anime, but not...
If there's one thing I miss about Twitch whenever I take a break from it, it's the people – other streamers and viewers that I have gotten to know over the last couple years. I genuinely enjoy interacting with them and I miss those interactions. They are, of course, no substitute from “real-life” interactions with...

Listen to The Acoustic Signature of Weather. Sighted people have a casual, almost dismissive relationship with the weather. They glance out a window or check an app. The weather is a visual fact, a piece of data. For me, the weather isn't data. It’s a symphony. Or, more accurately, it's a language I've learned to...
December 2025. Horsforth. Leeds. Visiting these last few West Yorkshire Beer Guide newbies, like Sir Geoff tickling singles off the Australian attach at Headingley in ’64, I head for Horsforth. Actually, I head for Kirkstall Forge, a newish station 23 13 minutes walk from the Three Swords, overcoming the discomfort...

The other day when I was watching Bugonia I noticed how intense the closeups were. Parts of their faces were in extreme focus, while everything else around them was blurry. This gave everything kind a dreamlike state flavor that worked for the show but I couldn't shake how awkward it was to watch the entire time....
in the bjork archives it was said that bjork was influenced by georges bataille's story of the eye.
If you pay any attention at all to the Apple-centric web, you saw an explosion of links yesterday to this article by Nikita Prokopov, which rightly eviscerates the proliferation of menu icons in macOS 26. I may write up my thoughts on menu icons in a future post (short version: they don’t belong), but today I have...
A Practical Manual for Constraint Classification and Energy Conservation Introduction: From Concept to Practice You’ve read the core concept. You understand that constraints come in four types: Mountains (natural), Ropes (coordination), Nooses (extractive), and Zombie Ropes (institutional inertia). You know the...
Back in 2004, I founded Izvan Svake Kontrole, an independent non-profit project that promotes the rock’n’roll subculture. What started as a radio show has grown over the years, and after 21 years, we’ve become a radio show, a TV show, a podcast, a web magazine, and a column in a local monthly newspaper. We write...
