Some of you who follow me are aware that I published Alcove last month, a privacy centered RSS reader. It follows the patterns of traditional RSS readers: categories, syncing, marking read vs unread, viewing content in-app, etc. One of my readers reached out and was excited about the project, but also expressed some...
I have started to become dissolusioned with buying new stuff, not just because trying to buy stuff is mostly avoiding scams, but because it doesnt make my life better. I'm not talking about buying e-waste, but actual "life improving" tools and utiliies. The main problem is that you get used to it, and you just raise...
"Vesta da zentilomo" from the Dizionario del Dialetto Veneziano by Giuseppe Boerio.
Spies, detectives, and terrorists; westerns and Native American life; war and violence; gangs and prisoners; animals and humans; rebels and resistance; women and feminism; autobiography and memoir; racism and sectarianism; music and pop stars; football and footballers. Ernest Hemingway, Men without Women I think...
Problemem do...
Back in July, we participated in The Last Camera Project1. This past month, we were finally able to see our photo “developed.” I’m pretty excited to hear about the Grand Opening scheduled for early 2026, as well as the book slated to be published sometime next year. "If you had one photo to share your heart with the...
In modern society, Simone de Beauvoir observed in her later years, “it is old age, rather than death, that is to be contrasted with life” — it is something upon which the vast majority of humanity looks upon “with sorrow and rebellion,” dreading it more than death itself. But her one solution to the problem of...
Last time I wrote this out was…2023? I thought things had changed, but it looks like my days of frantic switching have subsided somewhat and this list has largely stayed the same. I’m still using Apple’s horrendous excuses for software despite everything, and in some cases (podcasts, passwords, books), I’ve gone...
I’ve been thinking about the web and how it’ll change with the increasingly…uh…worrying decline of search. It feels like the order of their results can no longer be trusted, the web no longer reliably scraped. Instead, this essential tool we’ve relied on for more than two decades has halted all progress, reversed...
I find this sort of thing fascinating. I looked for detailed info before my own surgery because I like to know what I’m getting into. If you’re grossed out by surgical/medical descriptions or photos, skip this one. So I had this spot — like a pimple or small wart — appear under my right eye years ago. 2017, 2018?...
Many websites have a robots.txt file which instructs (often unsuccessfully) bots and web crawlers on proper crawling etiquette. We have a robots.txt file along with several less common .txt files. I previously wrote about adding humans.txt, carbon.txt, and ads.txt (despite our lack of ads) to The New Leaf Journal....
One of the fun side projects I’ve taken on this year has been powRSS, the public RSS feed aggregator for the Indieweb. As 2025 comes to a close, I want to put together a summary of the things that went on. I’m a strong believer of building in public, and that includes talking about the goals, successes and failures....
Kottke’s 2025 Holiday Gift Guide is worth a look. Were I ever to put together a gift guide, it’d definitely include these objects: Joshuvela’s Keyhook in Brass. I’ve had mine for many years and love it. Toyo Steel’s Cantilever Toolbox. The perfect toolbox for a city apartment. 8 Kid-Friendly Christmas Cookie Recipes...
Nothing else to say than: “wish me good luck for next week”. See you on the other side. Books God’s Madman at the End of the World by Javier Cercas. Much to my surprise, the Vatican has never let a writer follow the Pope around during one of his trips abroad. Why would “a godless lunatic” such as Javier Cercas...
My girlfriend recently bought a Framework 12 laptop1 with a correspoding stylus and, influenced by my ravings about the power of GNU Emacs, wants to take handwritten digital notes on it for her engineering and mathematics classes and then organise them in org-mode. I see a younger version of myself clearly in her,...

How We Lost Communication to Entertainment All our communication channels are morphed into content distribution networks. We are more and more entertained but less and less connected. A few days ago, I did a controversial blog post about Pixelfed hurting the Fediverse. I defended the theory that, in a communication...
They fired Jannshek and Jannshek. Well, Shah did, but the company made him. I think he was able to choose who to let go, and the gallows humour going around was that it was easier to pick one name than two, a sort of psychological lessening of what actually took place. I just assumed that the compliance team was...
During my trip down south, I learned a lot from completing the tournaments and taking a chance to try something new. Throughout the journey, I dealt with my fears and doubts, including some sadness about past mistakes and challenges I've endured. But I realized that it's best to do what you can to overcome those...
I just got my first Windows laptop in ages, and a little nervous to dig in, given the burgeoning reputation. (My secret: I used to admire Windows in the 3.x and 9x and 2000 era because I always thought its keyboard operation was a lot better than Mac OS’s.)#windows

Clearly, we want to improve them. So here we summarize their characteristics: p is the order l is the cycle length α is the Widlund wedge angle δ...
Social news aggregator Reddit has filed a lawsuit in the High Court of Australia, claiming the ban preventing Australians aged under sixteen using social media intrudes on free political discourse. The Australian Constitution does not protect free speech as such. In fact, the document seems more concerned with...
Uhhm sometimes you realize how lucky you been buying your PC Upgrade at the right time. Shortly after Gamescom 2025 I upgraded my home desktop to new CPU and Motherboard also decided to make the jump from DDR4 to DDR5… I read about the recent explosion in RAM prices but little did I realize how huge it actually is...
It was July of 2009. Twitter wasn’t a cesspool yet, and I’d released two silly mashups using its API: Portwiture, which built a Flickr mood board from keywords you’d tweeted, and TweetPlus, which discovered where your friends were blogging. On a random Wednesday morning, I welcomed this email to my inbox: Tyler: I...
When Tennyson sat his Cambridge entrance examination, it consisted of four subjects – Latin, Greek, Algebra and Natural Theology. Of those, the first two are in steep decline, especially Greek, though 'classical studies' in various forms are still on the curriculum. Certainly the days are long gone when an easy...
AutoDescriptor: Added page description via AutoDescriptor bot In [[Blog/2025-12-01/Grounding Your Agent]] I talked about how grounding your agent allows it to make better decisions. This is akin to the approach you would take if you were to debug code. The core device in debugging is the structure of the discovery...
Last Thursday, 11th of December, saw the launch of the new Digital Commons European Digital Infrastructure Consortium. In attendance were delegations from the launching member states (and the observers). Also present were the many forefathers (and mothers) of this initiative. Of particular note, the launch also...
Used to be better at the Askov Finlayson café—couldn't capture that magic brewing at home, still a little bitter.
This is my contribution to December’s IndieWeb Carnival hosted by V.H. Belvadi on the subject where do you see the IndieWeb in 2030, just five short years from now? And my answer is that it’ll probably be pretty much the same as it is now. Back in the late 1990s when a huge number of personal websites (like this...
Ryushiki07’s Higurashi: When They Cry is one of the better-known Japanese doujin visual novel (or “sound novel”) series, with the original eight main entries having been released from 2002-2010. On November 25, 2025, Ryushiki07 posted on X from the account of 07th Expansion (the studio behind Higurashi and...
It’s Blogvent, day 15, where I blog daily in December! Leading a project without formal authority can be challenging. Having accountability on the success of a project without the authority to direct/prioritize its direction can be frustrating, but there’s some tools in your tool belt you can use to influence...
Portrait of 17-year-old Arthur Rimbaud (making it clear he thinks you're dirt) by Étienne Carjat. Public domain image via Wikimedia Commons. My first real confrontation with Arthur Rimbaud was in a college French class, where "The Drunken Boat" was on the menu alongside Baudelaire’s "Enivrez-vous" (“Get Drunk”)....
The end of the year is rapidly approaching. As expected this week was a bit busy, but I think I’m more or less on track with my tasks. Still more busy days ahead. (Of course it didn’t help at all that instead of doing anything useful I looked into POI categorisation in OpenStreetMap data all day long yesterday. Good...
Functions in binary files need to have unique names, so Rust needs to decide what to call its functions and statics. This format needs to be standardized so that debuggers and profilers can recover the full names (e.g. alloc::vec::Vec instead of just Vec). About a month ago, Rust switched to symbol mangling v0 on...
I have a weird relationship with statistics: on one hand, I try not to look at it too often. Maybe once or twice a year. It’s because analytics is not actionable: what difference does it make if a thousand people saw my article or ten thousand? I mean, sure, you might try to guess people’s tastes and only write...
Una distopía con aires Kafkianos en el imperio Otomano con mensaje a la Albania comunista Imagen: Heather McKeen Nuevamente en mi vagar por la biblioteca municipal me llevó a la parte inferior de una de las estanterías de novela marcada con la letra K. December is always a fun time here in Birmingham, AL, especially if you like shopping for books. With all of the Maker Fairs and local bazaars going on, there is always something to do on the weekends. What’s been fun is seeing all of the different bookshops sharing not just books, but new ways of selling books. The...

FINALLY Man I've been waiting for snow, like snow-ass SNOW for a loooong time; the forecast didn't have any on it (unlike last week when it said 2-3" and we got sleet) so I was pretty surprised to find a goddamn winter wonderland this morning when I got up with it still actively snowing for a few hours. Please enjoy...
December 2025. Burgess Hill. If this blog had a Mission Statement, it it would be “to promote the UK’s lesser known highlights” (Leek, Leicester, Leigh) and to warn people away from Maidenhead. I was aware, from a half hour in Quench a decade ago, that Burgess Hill was rather less alluring than Lewes, 20 minutes...
8th December - 14th December Startled awake at 4am by who knows what. I hate 4am because it's too early for an early start but too late to go back to sleep. As I mentioned last week, the work bedlam continues. I have three full-time projects that I have to get to a certain level of "done" before the Christmas break....
This is the second post on a series I’m working on, regarding the black-box reverse-engineering of a Sun Microsystems Ray 2 Desktop Unit. The first post can be found here: Tickling a Sun Ray 2 - DHCP Discovery. New Findings In the last post, I mentioned that I had omitted a few DHCPACK and DHCPINFORM packets,...
