Montevideo by Enrique Vila-Matas, translated from the Spanish by Sophie Hughes and Annie McDermott, Yale University Press, 2025 Enrique Vila-Matas, famous for his erudite metafiction, has further solidified his giant status with Montevideo, his latest novel to be rendered into an exquisite...
I am not an artist by any means. But, after watching Stuthless video on getting unstuck from a creative rut I decided it could be fun to walk down to the park and mess around with some art. First up was a tea-stain map. I threw tea onto a piece of paper and turned it into a map for some fictional fantasy empire....

Advent of Code has become a yearly thing for me. It’s a way to keep my algorithmic and data structure skills up, and something I look forward to every December. Over the years, I’ve used it to learn a new programming language: I’ve done editions in Elixir, Java, TypeScript, and others. But the last few years,...
I'm currently trying to get a little deeper into Linux and understand more what actually makes the OS tick under the hood. I've been using Linux for almost 20 years at this point, but how the Kernel works and how everything is put together so that a functioning operating system comes out of it is still somewhat of a...
I have an NVMe base for my Raspberry Pi 5 and it's been running for a little over a year without any issues. A couple of months ago I switched to Almalinux and noticed that I could SSH into it right after it booted, but around 30-40 minutes after boot, I could ping from another host on my network but could no longer...
It’s Blogvent, day 14, where I blog daily in December! I’ve always liked taking photos of things, but since becoming a parent… I have thousands and thousands of pictures and videos of my children. I like looking at them, I like looking back at different milestones (especially with two babies now, it’s fun to see...
It's been a little bit since we launched the site. We pushed it early to let google start crawl it and all that, but it works. Several bugs have been worked out like when you submit a review you don't see ugly errors in the form field, etc. We fixed loading times for images by generating a smaller version just for...

Cop shows portray justice as catching the "bad guy" and locking them up. The investigations and car chases and shootouts are incredibly entertaining. The incarceration is often satisfying. But it is insufficient, and in real life things are often much more complex than the narratives portrayed in TV shows, or even...
When you understand things, there's no more magic. Tim Burners-Lee, inventor of the world wide web In my last post, I spoke about how web content is made with HTML and how to write your first lines of HTML code. I also mentioned that HTML is modeled after real-life documents. In this post, I'd like to go a little...
I had to re-install custom firmware on my PS Vita PCH-2000 series (PS Vita Slim) today because the console kept crashing after a couple of seconds into booting. Luckily, my official 64 GB PS Vita memory card seems to be fine, so I did not have to deal with any SD2VITA shenanigans for now. I followed the excellent...
I was so close, y’all. I promised myself that I would blog every day from mid-September to the end of the year. But I’ve failed. I wanted to write yesterday, but I had nothing to write about. Same with today. It’s not like I have no ideas, but nothing that I’m motivated to actually take up.
On December 8, 2025, Philip Rivers, the father of 10 who had recently celebrated the birth of his first grandchild, celebrated his 44th birthday. He is a former 17-year NFL quarterback who had retired in 2021 after playing 16 seasons with the San Diego/Los Angeles Chargers and his final season with the Indianapolis...
I spend a lot of time at work thinking and designing (and avoiding) loading states, and someone just reminded me of a piece I wrote ten years ago, so I just moved it from Medium to my new website, and updated with new things I learned. It’s about TV clock idents and what they meant to me growing up – possibly the...
Problem statement: Loop over a variable number of loops. I.e., we want to search a parameter space and therefore want to loop over multiple loops. The number of loops is variable. The initial approach goes like this: for (p1=1; p1<=10; ++p1) for (p2=1; p2<=10; ++p2) for (p3=1; p3<=10; ++p3) for (p4=1; p4<=10; ++p4)...
CGI-git defeated my shared host. Retrieving commit history and displaying git diff or anything git log resulted in weird anomalies which I think is some sort of race condition causing the script to occasionally fall over in a sorry heap. I stop here. I’ve rolled back to not displaying commit history at all and so...
There’s a playground in the Netherlands made of discarded shipping pallets and construction debris. Rusty nails stick out everywhere. Little kids climb on it with hammers, connecting random pieces together. One false step and you’re slicing an artery or losing an eye. There’s barely any adult supervision. Parents...
I've been on a reallll funk lately. Lost half my antidepressant prescription, so I've been taking only 2/3 of the dosage I need; ADHD's been kicking my butt hard, and I just... don't feel like blogging. I've been meaning to write something here for ten days, and nothing. I kept thinking: I got stuff to share, I did...
The Republic of Uzbekistan gained independence from the former Soviet Union on September 1, 1991. But according to Eurasianet, the most recent census in Uzbekistan was conducted in 1989. Former Uzbek President Islam Karimov (ruled from the end of the Soviet period through September 2016) was reportedly not keen on a...
Because I read for the same reason I write — to fathom my life and deepen my living — looking back on a year of life has always been looking back on a year of reading. Here are the books I read this year that clarified and magnified my life, that will stay with me for the rest of it. THANKS Here we are, living these...
Configure Windows to use UTC for the hardware clock when dual-booting with Linux, avoiding time synchronization issues and maintaining Linux defaults.
December 2025. Burgess Hill. West Sussex Ah, Bucolic Burgess Hill. I’d been before, just the once, when Quench got in the GBG over a decade ago. Even Harvey’s can’t keep Quench in the Guide, replaced by a craft bar and a Spoons. Which might make you think that Burgess Hill is worthy of a detour from Lewes. It’s not....
"Making Christmas" by Rise Against I haven't listened to Rise Against for a long time because they became my go-to "code angry" music at the end of a job I disliked. This Nightmare Before Christmas cover slaps though. The mark of a good cover is when it sounds like the band could have written it and this checks that...
Awaking in the middle of a prodigiously tough snore, and sitting up in bed to get his thoughts together, Scrooge had no occasion to be told that the bell was again upon the stroke of one. He felt that he was restored to consciousness in the right nick of time, for the especial purpose of holding a conference with...
After much planning, anticipation, hyperventilating, preparing for the VISA formalities, we finally made our trip to Istanbul in late November 2025. The trip went smoothly. Istanbul has always fascinated my father. We spent about a week there and it was amazing. It was my second time there and I loved it just as...
Manton Reece, a developer and long-time Apple user, recently lost permanent access to his Apple ID. And he didn’t even do anything wrong. The result: 20 years of photos, messages and data? Gone. A true worst case scenario! But let’s have a look, should we learn something from that? First of all: This isn’t just […]
The 4 hour and 35 minute runtime included an intermission. We were lucky to get some pizza from the concession stand before they shut everything down as the snowfall was now categorized as a Level 2 emergency.Currently Listening: Nancy Sinatra “Bang Bang - My Baby Shot Me Down”Reply via email
I am sitting on a train, looking — or at least aspirationally looking — in equal measures downward at my phone as well as to the horizon. The sun is rising above the hills; yellow peeks through the light, low clouds.Rain briefly fell. Standing, waiting for the train, I thought back to the affirmations I had been...
Following the IndieWebCamp San Diego Open Source development session, I’m proposing the start of a new monthly event tentatively called the IndieWeb Hackathon. This event is inspired by the IndieWeb Blog Carnival and hopes to encourage development of open source IndieWeb community software. The IndieWeb community...

I discovered The Darkside Detective when I was looking for Lucasarts inspired adventure games - I wanted an apéritif before a full play through of the originals next year. It was said to follow the style of humour and puzzle design so I was intrigued. Moreover, I have never played an adventure game without a story...
