This is taken from my journal. I write to understand my ideas better. It is the verbal equivalent of drawing a chart to visualise some data. Ideas that stay in my head remain disjointed until they wither away. When I set out to express something, I do it with the intent of testing its viability. The very process of...
Use unique email addresses 2025-11-13 It would be nice to be able to quickly create a unique email address for each new service I sign up to. That way, I could easily avoid spam (just delete the address) and tell which credentials to change in the event of a data breach. I already use Bitwarden to generate a unique...

The excellent KeePassXC, an offline, open‑source password manager, is at the center of a controversy over the use of AI‑generated code after the project’s collaboration policy and README added this paragraph: Generative AI is fast becoming a first-party feature in most development environments, including GitHub...

This year I decided that I would finally waste some money and update my gaming laptop. All my life I used to think that updates should come for the best. I'm not talking about merely software updates. Recently I decided to upgrade my old gaming laptop that used to work well, stable and definitely fine to a newer...
November 2025. Tonbridge. Having spent the extravagant sum of £3.20 to park next to Tonbridge Castle (it was 6.43pm, they charge 8am till 8pm but kindly gave me a credit of those 43 minutes in the morning) we were going to get full value for our night out. Supper in Spoons, which seems to be back in favour these...

At the end of October 2024, I cut all my hair off, and let my wife shave it off to 9mm. I wrote about that here. I did it because various illness and medication effects made me a lose a lot of hair. In November that year, I shaved it once more, down to 5mm, then let it grow. This is the current status: Have done...
Okay we’re almost halfway into November with this one. Sorry, I was waiting for COSPLAY, and I’m so glad I did. Highlights: “Echoes”, “Life In This Body”.Minute/Year:Minute/Year is an automated, process-based, durational work, in which sound is played, recorded, and layered, in a resonant space, for one minute each...

I am completely new to Predator series so please ignore my ignorance. Summary: An alien hero on an alien planet gets inspired by the story of alpha wolf and decides to save an intelligent humanoid and an alien monkey. The villains are other humanoids. This movie is John Wick’s alien version. The storyline is...
The most popular link last time was this side-by-side comparison of US vs UK book covers, with this podcast episode about the witch economy second. A magnificent 7,000-word essay about what on earth is going on with women and cosmetic surgery. "I firmly believe we will look back on the 'the filler and facelift era'...
What if you read things around the web the way you watch movies or listen to music? A couple of days ago I made a post on Mastodon introducing lettrss.com, a project that takes a book in the public domain and sends one chapter a day to your RSS reader. Xinit replied with a great point about RSS feed management: This...
In which I challenge myself to draw a pokemon every day until I stop Drawing and photographing and posting every day feels a bit much but I did want to get yesterdays onto the blog ASAP because it turned out to be motherfucking Togepi. Joel Dueck in Publishing Nerds (via): […] Publishing nerds end up as inveterate yak shavers and one-man bands performing in their own driveways. Our ingrained preference to control all levels of design, and the facility which computers give us for doing so, tend to preclude us from cross-pollinating and...

Wherever I go, I usually bring my backpack. In it, I always keep a few things. First, I try to always bring a book with me. I usually pack a book to read before I leave the house, for the book I am reading is either at my bedside or next to my chair. Right now, I am reading the art of explanation by Ron Atkins, a...
Innovation in Education? It is not using AI to innovate or glorifying a poorly understood technology. It is limiting the use of LLMs and recognizing human capacities. It is the fresh perspective of the next generation of teachers and the experience of the current generation of teachers developing and designing...
Amazingly enough, Valve have finally at least made an announcement breaking the “curse of three,” and their third1 VR headset is actually materializing soon™.Anyway. Aside from the lack of pricing I’m super optimistic about the Steam Frame. It doesn’t yet hit quite all the marks for me but it’s super close and...
She was awakened by a shock, so sudden and severe that if Dorothy had not been lying on the soft bed she might have been hurt. As it was, the jar made her catch her breath and wonder what had happened; and Toto put his cold little nose into her face and whined dismally. Dorothy sat up and noticed that the house was...
“Blackness” still implies something. I think death is the absence of anything at all. Just like before you were born: there’s no consciousness, no awareness, no blackness. Simply nothing. I agree with Kev1: after death, in my opinion, we fade away, we no longer exist. I believe our minds are incapable of imagining...
Our latest Kyoto Morning Tech & Coffee brought together founders, engineers, designers, and researchers from Kyoto and beyond. Conversation flowed between cultural differences in company structure, startup life, and good spots to co-work in Kyoto. This meetup is always agenda-free and super casual. The only...
A part of me still hasn't recovered from learning that some people believe there is no such thing as an untranslatable word. I've written about why I disagree before, but that explanation didn't satisfy me completely. There was a stronger argument to be made, I thought, but I couldn't put it into words. Now I...
The same people behind Project Kamp also run a project called Precious Plastic which is an open source plastic recycling platform. As most are well aware, plastic is a major problem polluting our land, our beaches, our rivers, our oceans, and our balls. While Ocean Cleanup is progressing nicely, only 10% of the...
I feel the need to get back into the habit of writing regularly. And I can't think of a better way to do it than to take the 100 Days to Offload challenge a second time. The 100 Days to Offload challenge is simple: publish 100 posts on your personal blog within one year. You can start any time, you just need to do...
A philosophy professor is interested in developing a social media account for his department, and could use some help. He writes that his department has decided it needs to improve its communication with and visibility to students, the rest of the university, and the surrounding community, and that a greater social...
Random update time Well October was a month, it started off with IT issues at work which left me without a usable account or laptop for most of a week, followed by catching Covid the next week and sort of went downhill from there. Thankfully all back on track now in November, so here is to a better month. But first...
Brian DePalma's 1983 gangster movie, "Scarface" is a polarising classic. Al Pacino's delivery of Oliver Stone's eminently quotable script garnered him a nomination for Best Actor at the Golden Globes. Giorgio Moroder's score was also nominated. But I didn't know until today that the movie is a remake of a 1932 movie...
My daughter is in her Frozen period, and she is obsessed with "Do you want to be a snowman" song. I keep telling her not to put it on... (she can use spotify) because I keep crying at the thought of a child growing up all by herself missing her best friend all her life and the loneliness she must feel. No child...
I’m really into the solitaire card game Accordion. I play it from the Aisleriot card games collection, and I am utterly hooked. It is a very difficult game to complete but I’ve come to understand that the easiest shuffles to win are when all four cards in a rank are on or very close to the bottom row. Funny, it...

Forty years ago, I attended a conference of literature professors at Christian liberal-arts colleges in which the keynote speaker was an esteemed Christian journalist, tasked with giving us advice, I guess. Whatever his task was, he lectured us about our narrow-mindedness, our parochial attitudes, our failure to...
In the standard libc API set there are multiple functions provided that do ASCII numbers to integer conversions. They are handy and easy to use, but also error-prone and quite lenient in what they accept and silently just swallow. atoi atoi() is perhaps the most common and basic one. It converts from a string to...

Last week, I came across Don’t Build an Audience. It’s a fascinating post and has been occupying a lot of my “free thinking” time. I strongly suggest reading it as it’s well written and excellently argued. To summarise what it tries to say: The market for written content on the web (blog posts, articles etc) is...

After finishing chapter 1 of Tokyo Mirage Sessions FE: Encore, I learned that there are between-chapter intermissions. The intermission allows you to roam around town, complete side-quests, and train. I continue from where I left off in my chapter 1 review to offer my first intermission impressions. Kiria was added...
Studies do show that the black-and-white mode is significantly less addictive but for me that effect wasn’t nearly strong enough and I’ve had to use other methods to try to not be on the tablet all day when I’m at home. The black-and-white mode doesn’t seem to help very much anymore when it comes to actually putting...
