Earlier today I was doomscrolling and I came upon a video that was pretty standard Filipino humor: lip syncing to a classic karaoke song about how some other girl is going to snatch up the guy you've got your eye on. What caught me, though, was that the description of the "other girl" was near-perfectly applicable...
Posted on November 14, 2025 After I set up my homelab I was casting around for ways to do monitoring and alerting. I didn’t want to use anything that was fiddly to set up, I did want something that could send email and ping my phone, and I wanted to be able to host everything myself. For notifications, I settled on...

I wrote about starting Dreaming Spanish earlier this year and wanted to give an update since I've just reached (drum roll) Level 4! I'm currently at around 350 hours of input and watch around 90 minutes of Spanish content per day. So, when I first started, I struggled to understand "superbeginner" videos. Back then,...
My ideal browser 2025-11-14 I love Qutebrowser. It’s a very cool, minimal, get-out-of-my-way kind of tool. Most importantly, it is designed to be used exclusively with the keyboard. But I am missing a few things, mostly things that you can get with add-ons in the classic browsers: Bitwarden integration, tree-style...
When I am in Kansas (my home state) I enjoy going for a drive in the country. I typically depart with a general direction in mind (say Quivera National Wildlife Refuge) but without a specific route for getting there. I'll choose any of a plethora of nearly deserted back roads that will guide me toward my...
I have many concerns about artificial intelligence (AI) and LLMs in their present state. I'll elaborate on these concerns in future posts, but I wanted to make it clear that until my concerns are resolved, this is an AI-free blog. I do not use or consult AI in the research or writing of my blog posts or in any other...

After reading1 the recent news about the unsurprising lack of diversity in podcasting — 64% of the hosts of the most popular US podcasts of 2024 were men…Shows with video are more likely to have male hosts; the worst gender balance is with business and technology podcasts, where men host 92% of shows. — I have...
A while ago, the European Commission launched a Digital Package on Simplification. The goal was to focus on regulatory and administrative issues in the digital law space ('digital acquis'): Reducing burdens on businesses and citizens, updating parts to the current technological advancement, and providing...
Tech talk ahead. Short version: I've turned off comments and other minor features to improve site performance here because I think AI bots are hogging things. Currently Listening: Jeff Russo “Procession”Reply via email
I love coming up here and looking down at the Katsura/Oi/Hozu River (it changes names) as it winds its way through the gorge. I've taken many photos from here. 私はここに来て峡谷を縫うように流れる大堰川を見下ろすのが大好きだ。 ここからたくさんの写真を撮ってきた。
Above the clouds in the Peruvian Andes there is a town named La Rinconada. It holds the title of being the highest year-round settlement in the world. At one point swelling to 30,000 people, the population has dwindled some now near 12,000. The weather is cold and the oxygen is thin. It’s incredible what humans are...
As outlined in my previous two posts: scrapers are, inadvertently, DDoSing public websites. I've received a number of emails from people running small web services and blogs seeking advice on how to protect themselves. This post isn't about that. This post is about fighting back. When I published my last post, there...
Strava seem to have removed their activity map styles of ‘Black Lives Matter’, ‘Pride’ and ‘Support Ukraine’. Presumably this is part of getting ready for their IPO and not wanting to have a potentially damaging narrative about whether they are ‘too woke’. I always wondered when this would happen, given the broad...
I have a few different computers. Those machines have different capabilities, form factors, portability, hardware, and software — and yet I still want to do roughly the same work on them. While most of the work I do is with text — reading, writing, editing, programming — Sometimes I want to work on one specific...
You need to start writing a blog. Yes, you -- the person who is reading this right now, either on my blog or a syndicated version on one of the websites I distribute this to. You need to go out, find some web space or a blog host, and start writing a blog. And you need to do it now. I talked about this back in March...
Tantra and Ch’an teacher Daniel Odier explained in one of his videos how the unexpected is the doorway to revelation. (This is, again, a very personal post, so if you came here for Linux and Cloud Native shit, you might want to skip.) You know, monasteries are enlightenment factories where no one becomes...

I’m going to attempt to write out this entire post in Nano. It has spot-on markdown syntax highlighting and that’s all there is to it. It looks very cool when typing in here; I’m writing in a distraction-free environment (not even an active spell-checker in sight) but hey… you wanna flow on the writing? This rocks....

You know that moment late into the night when the body, famished for rest, is kidnapped from the land of sleep by a mind aflame with rumination, paging through the ledger of regrets — the message you shouldn’t have sent, the hand you should have raised, the kindness you withheld — until the temperature of the self...
After a few hours the road began to be rough, and the walking grew so difficult that the Scarecrow often stumbled over the yellow bricks, which were here very uneven. Sometimes, indeed, they were broken or missing altogether, leaving holes that Toto jumped across and Dorothy walked around. As for the Scarecrow,...
Never make art for social media This is not a joke. You want to make art for fun? Don’t make art for social media. You want to work in the industry and have your art published? Don’t make art for social media. You want to be famous on social media? Don’t make art for social media.
I have published an article and fictional dialogue complaining about the ever-increasing brightness of car headlights in Brooklyn, New York, from the perspective of a pedestrian who regularly takes evening walks. Over on The Emu Café Social, I noted that I am not the only one to have noticed the issue. Four years to...
Aurora Borealis Nov 12 2025I live in Michigan and this is my first time seeing the Northern Lights in 40 years. And it was awesome!
Cycles and Fluctuations This is my contribution to the Indieweb Carnival of November, which is hosted this month by Alex Sirac. The theme chosen by Alex is “Cycles and Fluctuations”. Each day, we start a new cycle. We wake, get up, are active for roughly fifteen hours, wind down and go to sleep again. The next day,...
I don't think there is a need for an introduction of this book, as hollywood already has a legendary movie, The Shawshank Redemption, based on this book. Its a pity that I was completely unware of the existence of this book even though I watched the movie many times. This book is one of the finest non-horror fiction...

when i first talked about this my friend ivana said to me "I can't believe that a normal digital watch can be referred to as a "dumb watch" in today's time.". she is so right lmao but i am still going to roll with the sensationalist phrase. i used to have a small digital casio as a child. it had an orange backlight...
Today I saw a video of David Coverdale announcing his retirement. Coverdale used to sing for Deep Purple in the 70s before starting his own band Whitesnake, which became hugely successful in the 80s. I'm sure you've heard "Here I Go Again" on the radio a million times. Coverdale is easily one of my favourite singers...
It's been a long few weeks here in the woods, and the main reason is because my body has decided to try and murder me. Well, perhaps murder is too strong a word. Incapacitate is a little closer. The short version is that it is suspected that I am having a little reaction to a prescription med I've been taking, and...
November 2025. Eastbourne. Not a great pub town, bar the Lamb, but Eastbourne has Beachy Head up the road, 2 good Spoons, and a gem of an art gallery. Mind, the exterior of the Towner is better than the interior. Only the exceptional Ravilious gallery was open and free. Ravilious is a great, but if you want real art...
Five days ago, I wrote about ordering Copper Moon White Christmas coffee after an entry in my feed reader caught my attention. The coffee has arrived. It arrived as promised, well packaged and all. I appreciate the little postcard with the signature of the person who packed my coffee. I still have to finish a few...

I know my accomplishment is...
On the ground floor of the Musee de l’Orangerie in Paris – a long building by the river banks of the Seine, and at the start of the Jardin des Tuileries – there is an exhibit of eight Monet paintings. The museum website introduces the paintings like so:Offered to the French State by the painter Claude Monet on the...
[Equations in this post may not look right (or appear at all) in your RSS reader. Go to the original article to see them rendered properly.] Earlier this week, John D. Back in September when I was watching "Under The Bridge", little did I know lead actress Riley Keough is American Royalty — granddaughter of the King himself, Elvis Presley! Thanks for reading this post via RSS! Let me know your thoughts by sending me an email: rss@thomasrigby.com.
I occasionally talk to people facing what I can best describe as job paranoia—the fear that their boss is out to get them, see them fired, et cetera. If you’re someone who occasionally feels like this, as someone who has both hired and fired people, I’m here to offer some reassurance. Before we proceed—and I know...
As the BBC's lawyers try to find a form of words that will appease the Orange Man Across the Water – to the BBC an embodiment of all that is wrong with the world – and thereby avoid having to pay him extremely hefty damages, I find myself experiencing a strong sense of deja vu. This blog was but a few months old...
