On Armistice Day, the mind inevitably turns to the 'war poets' – a mixed bunch, some of whom overtly took war and 'the pity of war' as their subject, approaching it head-on, while others, notably Edward Thomas, were more tangential in their approach. Although he was at his creative peak during his years of war...
and how is it that I came to the writer Ann Quin and her 1964 novel Berg? who knows? just singin the body electric I guess. or at least wifi. and a healthy amount of curiousity.
Two people meet, discover an uncommon electricity flowing between them, exhilarate each other into forgetting the abyss that always gapes between one consciousness and another, until one day they realize they are having profoundly different experiences of the same situation and find themselves suddenly hanging from...
Dorothy lived in the midst of the great Kansas prairies, with Uncle Henry, who was a farmer, and Aunt Em, who was the farmer’s wife. Their house was small, for the lumber to build it had to be carried by wagon many miles. There were four walls, a floor and a roof, which made one room; and this room contained a rusty...
I'm taking some time to peruse the Conceptual Definition Language (CDL) topic of the CAP documentation, and stopped at the first example in the Keywords & Identifiers section, which piqued my interest. Let's put this in a file called db/keywords-and-identifiers.cds: namespace capire.bookshop; using { managed, cuid }...
Texas just enacted SB 2420, the “App Store Accountability Act,” which imposes age-verification and parental-consent duties on app stores and developers. On paper, the goal is to protect kids. In practice, it creates large new targets of sensitive identity data and forces workflows that many orgs are not prepared to...
Back in the late 90s, the Internet wasn’t readily available in my hometown. As it was costly, my parents couldn’t afford it. At that time, blogs were the TikTok or Instagram of today. By the time the Internet became accessible, social media websites like Facebook and Twitter were in full swing. Naturally, I caught...
Simon Willison: My piece this morning about the Marimo acquisition is an example of a variant of a TIL – I didn’t know much about CoreWeave, the acquiring company, so I poked around to answer my own questions and then wrote up what I learned as a short post. Curiosity-driven blogging if you like. This is how I might...
Utsab was lost in technical minutiae, talking over her head as he did when rolling around a difficult problem. He slapped the desk. “I think I can solve it with the cluster in the Frances lab. I just need access to the computer, and I think I can solve it. The equations are all multivariable, and I can’t predict how...
Today was a big day for gamers as Valve just introduced three products: the Steam Controller, the Steam Machine, and the Steam Frame. When you add this alongside the Steam Deck, I think it's safe to say that Valve is about to win the next console generation. Steam Controller I have basically nothing to say about the...

I use Spotify and I am not too ashamed about it. I’m sure there are concerns about how they treat artists. I have used most popular music streaming services - YouTube Music (also when it was Play Music), Apple Music and lately, Spotify has been the music service of choice. I like that I can find most music there....
You may have noticed by now, but I have something of an obsession with customizing my devices, and fiddle with every single setting about them that I can. It became a thing with my Android phones, from 3rd party launchers, icon packs, widgets, or wallpapers, to the good old XPosed or Magisk modules, power apps, and...
In which I challenge myself to draw a pokemon every day until I stop The other day I realized I've never drawn a pokemon before. Ever. I was 16 when the first games came out but I've only casually played them off and on (and never to completion outside of Yellow) until ZA which like, fuck dude, I'm having so much...
Today I held my best friend as she sobbed into my shoulder. It was the last time I was ever going to see her.
I’ve been working a lot with AI lately. Wait, don’t run away. I know it’s a boring and unpleasant topic, about which everything and its opposite has been said, but it’s a topic that can’t be ignored. And anyway, I’m only telling you a side story. So, listen, go ahead. I’ve been working a lot, I was saying, with AI,...
I'm not one to rush time, or wish away the days. They pass with sufficient speed on their own. I get frustrated when I see Halloween decorations in August, or pumpkin spice anything before we are solidly into sweater weather. It seems like the marketing of Christmas continues a steady creep toward mid-year. However,...
Three years to the day, I covered the first Veterans Day Proclamation, issued by then-President Dwight Eisenhower 71 years to the day. The proclamations continue. On November 10, 2025, President Donald Trump proclaimed today, November 11, 2025, Veterans Day (see Proclamation). From the Proclamation: The story of...
Another week has officially begun... and Friday seems so far away... But our first writing contest is officially coming to a close as we’ve announced the winners, paid our finalists and judges—a total well over $600—and are preparing to publish the three finalists next week. But until then, we have a ton of new...
Reuters shed light on Meta’s lucrative business built on selling fraudulent ads on its platforms — Facebook and Instagram. Internal company documents obtained by the news agency show that 10.1% of Meta’s 2024 revenue, or US$ 16 billion, came from fraudulent/scam ads. A December 2024 document shows Meta running an...

I had a quick pair programming session with one of my colleagues. Can you imagine that Claude Code doesn’t need to be your only coding buddy? The validation rules needed a little tweak, so here is the piece of code I typed, and below is the version suggested by my friend. validation.Field(&r.ScheduledAt,...

Is it possible? Would you want to do it?
Novelist Mary Shelley wrote "Frankenstein: or A Modern Prometheus" and invented an entire genre of literature when she was 19 years old following the death of her premature daughter. Seeing Victor Frankenstein through a lens of grief casts a sympathetic shadow over a man often portrayed as a "mad scientist"....
I stumbled onto Odd Artworks’ Random Mini Dungeon video series via the algorithm. He rolls against a dice table to generate a theme and requirements and starts drawing an isomorphic dungeon on a single sheet of paper. It’s almost like a Solo-RPG meets Inktober mashup activity. The process is straight forward: roll...
Meta will read your DMs. Use Signal! 2025-11-12 In a turn of events, Meta will now openly scan DMs on Facebook, Instagram and Whatsapp. This is a blatant invasion of your privacy and will further allow Meta to police what users can share on their platforms and most importantly, to sell their user’s personal...
I get that pennies cost more to make than they're worth. It totally makes sense to end production. But it seems like there was an opportunity to plan the phasing out in a comprehensive manner.Currently Listening: Madonna “Fighting Spirit”Reply via email
November 2025. Rye. I’d almost overdone it on that first visit to the Ypres on my return to Rye (not the only one, apparently), and it was unfortunate that I had exactly 32 minutes till the bus back to our caravan park, which is exactly the time needed for a last pint. Yes, yes, I could have walked, but it’s pitch...
On the bad days, I dig through my drafts. Today, I found these: Read The Republic of Letters on Wikipedia “Assyrian Women of Letters” by Durrie Bouscaren “What Urdu writers teach us about the art of letter writing” by Poorna Swami “The Last Letter Writers Of Mumbai” by Devyani Nighoskar “The disappearing tribe of...
If you look at the end of this post, you’ll see that I now have something new on my site. I can now assign a blog post to a series, and it will put a series map at the end of the post. It really just uses something similar to tags to do this, but it will allow me to create groups of posts that were written in series...
Recent additions to the Heap of Links… It’s surprisingly “puzzling and difficult… to explain why right hands and left hands are identical but different” — Kant tried, but an adequate explanation, according to this article, was not discovered until 1956 (via the Browser) “All the people talking about polarization are...
My latest side project Alcove (a privacy RSS reader in beta) solves the problem of privacy invasions regarding what news you might read or what people you follow. However the other side of the equation, blogs, face an interesting challenge. Blogs of course are generally not private, but they are a tool of free...
