Blogdex, a system launched in 2001 to track weblogs. At the beginning of 2001, most popular weblogs were a combination of personal journal and linkblog — a format encouraged by early blogging tools like Blogger, LiveJournal and Diaryland. But by the end of the year, blogging had become a real-time reporting tool...
I may have lost the race with Ruben, as he reached page 1000 before I reached post 500 (he also didn't knew we were racing), but here we are. On the first day of the 41st year of my life I am publishing the 500th post here. Yey! It took 3 and a half years, and here we are. A big, fat site. A big site if you may. A...
Problems Key consideration: Hip mobility restrictions tend to limit your ability to isolate spinal flexion—if hips won’t flex adequately, you compensate by over-rounding the lumbar spine or can’t achieve the positions at all. This means the protocol needs to address hip capsule first, then layer in strength and...
Many people were surprised to learn on the 20th that Signal uses Amazon/AWS infrastructure. Signal’s president, Meredith Whittaker, had to explain why: Instant messaging demands near-zero latency. Voice and video in particular require complex global signaling & regional relays to manage jitter and packet loss. These...
A quote about the dinosaur legacy of birds inspired me to "edit" some of our classic (my description) NLJ bird posts.
I’ve been thinking about how the definition of software engineering has been changing with AI, as everyone is expected to do more. An engineering manager used to be the person focused on the team’s strategy, developing people’s skills, hiring, project management, etc.. They were deep into meetings and were the...
A post-wedding "engagement" photoshoot at the Palace of Fine Arts and Crissy Field with San Francisco photographer Zoe Larkin.
Modern development jobs increasingly require knowledge across multiple domains. Here's why becoming a T-shaped developer with deep expertise in one area, broad knowledge across others is crucial.
I saw a very unusual number of views in my Statify stats. The source was… Hacker News? While I have had a few dramatic Hacker News successes on my main site, The New Leaf Journal, I was not expecting one here. The culprit is yesterday’s Firefox “Privacy-Focused Direct Results” PSA, which I published as an aside...

John Ruskin, from Unto This Last (1860): THERE IS NO WEALTH BUT LIFE. Life, including all its powers of love, of joy, and of admiration. That country is the richest which nourishes the greatest number of noble and happy human beings; that man is richest who, having perfected the functions of his own life to […]
At the Vulture/Boundary st crossing in West End in Brisbane This morning while JB was writing cards to his kids, I walked over to Bent Books. The sign read, "Open 10ish to 4ish". It was 10ish and raining so obviously they were closed. I took a photo of the crossing while I waited for the budda-budda's. The community...

I have started playing around with Kodi again. Having recently turned-off my original external Jellyfin server, I have been running the server on my laptop. It’s been working well but I started to question if continuing to have this particular setup was worth the hassle. The Jellyfin client on the Android box is...
My review for Soul Reaver, one of those childhood game that never got to be, until now!
I got some good replies on Mastodon after Saturday’s post. Longtime friend of the blog Nathan Grigg said he’s always assumed that GPS-measured lengths would be long because no matter how straight your path, the GPS error would make it zigzagged. Then wherami and thvedt pointed out that the official rules of these...
It's a French movie which I watched in English, but part of the English version was still partly in French ;). Summary: A young woman, Agathe, in modern-day France, is struggling to bring out her voice as a female writer. She is a big fan of the legendary Jane Austen. One day, her friend sent the first chapter of...
IQIYI is calling it “Rose Finch”, WETV is calling it “Rosefinch”. That side of me that demands uniformity is annoyed. Short dramas have long been the domain for lesser-known talent to make their mark. And this is where the director of Blossom, Zeng Qing Jie, made his name with short dramas such as Provoke, A...
Roc CameraAI has blurred the line. Now, how we take, share, and create images has changed. Social media has made sharing images easy. Generative AI now creates any image we can imagine…By combining attested sensor data, zero-knowledge proofs, and a tamper-proof environment, we've built Roc

I am committing to travelling less and less by plane, hopefully stopping completely as soon as possible. One of the perks of other means of travelling is much cheaper, if not free. Therefore, having a bike to bring with me everywhere I go would be super useful, and very cool too, to be honest eheh. There are only...
When I got sick at the start of October, I reflected about my social media activities going forward. Since I got tired of checking my socials, I decided to focus on various things outside of my creative pursuits (mainly self-care, remote work, and general life stuff). Now that I recovered from the flu, I...
A philosopher noticed something off about the paper he was refereeing for a journal. In the following guest post, Jakob Ohlhorst (RWTH Aachen University) shares his experience and raises some questions about how to deal with the problem he encountered. Reviewing an LLM-written paper by Jakob Ohlhorst It was bound to...
15 things: 1 quote, 2 random thoughts, 3 things I'm working on, 4 gratitudes, and 5 things to share. Choosing to have joy is not naively thinking everything will be easy. It is courageously believing that there is still hope, even when things get hard. - Morgan Harper Nichols Out of the blue... An FYI. As I begin...
I really like to blog. I do not know if you can tell that, as I only blog every single day. I know a lot of my fellow bloggers who have the same passion I do for maintaining and producing content for their blogs. One thing I have noticed, however is that a lot of us bloggers, myself included, seem to avoid using...
Just because I keep forgetting it: the URL parameter to have the WordPress router redirect you to the proper permalink is p as in: https://website.example/?p=12345
Some links don’t call for a full blog post, but sometimes I still want to share some of the good stuff I encounter on the web. Why it is so hard to tax the super-rich・Very interesting and informative video, to the point that I wish it were a full series. Who knew I would one day be so fascinated by the topic of…...
Redesigning this website over the weekend gave me a curious feeling. It was a deeply cozy one, as if my work sits on a continuum of all the other websites and books every made. As if my work is a link in a long chain through time. You’ll likely spot the inspiration right away: this redesign took an LLM copyright...
The blue jays are playing amazing, 2 home runs to start and a triple to add on in the 4th. I don't know what the Dogers mascot is, or if it is something that a blue jay will eat, but from what I can tell, blue jays will eat pretty …
So back in December, you may have noticed that the webcomic I make with Ethan Flanagan, Peregrine Lake, went from color to black and white. The intention, originally, was to have this be a temporary situation. We always meant for Ethan to go back and update the pages. But, uh, it's been ten months. And that hasn't...
Brisbane based Australian musician and singer, and founder of Pub Choir, Astrid Jorgensen (Instagram page), recently published her memoir, Average at Best. Average, says Jorgensen, is underrated, given how difficult it is to be the best: By its very nature, ‘best’ is rare and elusive: you’re not going to get much of...
Problem statement: grep1 for a given string in a multitude of multi-page PDF files: % du -sh very_large_file.zip 513M very_large_file.zip % unzip very_large_file.zip [...] % ls -1 *.pdf | wc -l 6816 There’s a tool called ripgrep-all (short: rga) that is perfect for that. And yes, it resembles our good ol' ripgrep...
October 2025. Barnby Moor. North Notts. “Barnby Moor ? Wherezat ?”. Well, if you’d read Roger Protz’s marvellous book on the Great North Road (£7 + postage) you’d know all about (Ye) Olde Bell in the posh bit of Bassetlaw (the bit that’s not Worksop, Retford or central Donny). One of the grandest staging points…...
Changed the background leaf pattern and made other quality of life improvements like to text size, line height, and more.
last updated on October 29, 2025 Update October 29, 2025: @deejayy over on Mastodon brought to my attention a great Powershell script that also removes all the bloatware from > > Windows 11. Check it out on Github. I have given this a try and it works great! (function(id, src){ if (!document.getElementById(id)) {...
Owning a car, like many other things in India, can be quite a frustrating experience. You’d think a company like Renault operating in the country would have its act together. The service center franchises surely don’t, or, unknown to me, they do at the customer’s expense. I’ve had issues with my car for the past...
