Well it's official -- The Perfect Host, book five in my queer urban fantasy series The Mia Graves Saga, is now out! I know I say this every time, but I'm super excited for this one to get into reader's hands. It's the conclusion to the "first phase" in this series. Like I intend to write more Mia Graves books (the...
2026-08-10Hello!Small garden, native plants, colorful, and interesting. I've got a style. In fact, I've taken photos like this in May of 2026. I'm seeing and appreciating the blooming and growing flowers this summer as well, and this one in particular stood out to me.I can't look up what kind of flower this is; none...
About a month ago I announced a new gaming project, Ecliptic Mariner: Diaries. Having had my fun with The Game for Scribes, and inspired by other games I enjoyed like Space Trader and Spirit City: Lofi Sessions, I set out to create a fun little TUI-ish, manual-driven game that was one part space trader, one part...
I've been reading Wodehouse at bedtime – actually dipping into this volume – and this morning, browsing on Facebook, I came across a Wodehouse anecdote. It seems that someone signing themselves 'Indignant' wrote a letter to the press attacking Wodehouse for being a vastly overrated writer. In his 1957 collection...
Quoted Producer Wada Kazuhisa Talks Persona 4 Revival – Rebuilding Inaba, Reworking Combat, and Keeping the Heart of the Original Intact by Ralph (gamerbraves.com) Dungeon design also saw a significant overhaul. 'Regarding the dungeons, we’ve mainly decided to make the whole dungeon-playing experience a lot less...
Do you take time to teach your lower level students basic student skills? How do you do it? Detail of Sculpture by Tatsuya Tanaka Increasingly, I’ve had students who don’t seem to know how to take notes during class. Or know that they should take notes. This is one of several abilities college professors tend to...
Getting to Coney Island from Manhattan could take a long time in the 1890s. Depending on where you were coming from, you’d likely have to board a streetcar or elevated train, or more than one, and then catch one of the Brooklyn railroads that then delivered you to a beachfront terminal. The shorter way to get to...
In this entry in the “Prot Asks” series, I talk to Oliver about a range of topics covering minimalism, independence, art, philosophy, fitness, productivity, and more. This ended up being the longest video in the series, reaching 4 hours! The original idea was to end at around the 2 hour mark, but then Oliver wanted...
I went out on Wednesday with my new friend Rachael, she moved here in Manila from Ireland of all places!! It feels a little weird because her parents are replacing the exact same job that my last best friend's parents were in.
Cleaner HTML-sanitizer bypass: mutation-XSS via MathML namespace confusion Reported as: Inside MathML foreign content, <style> is a raw-text element. jsoup therefore stores <img src=x onerror=...> as opaque text (a DataNode) and copies it verbatim, so it never sees an img element or an onerror attribute to strip....
August 2026. Bristol. I’ll show my deep ignorance of suburban Bristol now and admit I don’t really know the difference between Clifton Village and Clifton proper, about 50p on a pint I guessed. Yes, there are buses I could have taken, but then I’d have missed the closed zoo, Clifton Down looking like a scorched...
I stopped writing for a while, since my road trip to Arizona last month, and my mind has been wandering too much. I feel like I can't anchor my thinking in a single thing at any given time. Normally, when I'm more focused, taking Ritalin improves my focus and puts me in a good mood. Today, the medication is...
Follows the Jackass crew as they perform their final series of dangerous stunts and pranks, marking the end of the franchise. Last? Probably. Best? Not even close. With a mix of old footage, some previously unaired, and a few new skits and some rehashes, it shows how much the guys and us have aged. While pulling...
Memoir is one of my favorite genre for reading books. A cherry on top is when its about traveling. So basically a traveling log is the most exciting thing for me. After all I don't need to spend too much money being an armchair traveler. Things Become Other Things is a walking memoir of (and by) Craig Mod who came...

The task manager app Linear does something interesting I have not seen before. In the keyboard shortcut tooltips, it highlights the modifier keys you already pressed, to give you confirmation you’re on the right track: I think this is nice, particularly given that the modifier key situation is kind of a mess, and...
Heya! So, as you might've heard about recently, this month the augustory blogging challenge is happening over here! Which, inspired me to talk a bit about blogging challenges, and why I personally tend not to participate in most of them. So: The thing is, right, when you've been blogging for a decent while, you kind...
August 10, 2026 Brandon shared a link to "The Guy at Wawa" story yesterday. I really enjoyed it so I thought I would share it with you all. The Guy at the Wawa After reading the story, I visited the author’s blog and found a few other stories to read. I enjoyed the ones about McDonald’s, too.
Someone told me that a classmate of his died partway through the year, in middle school. What he remembers, decades later, is that no one sat in the boy’s lunch chair. That’s the whole memory. Not the boy — the chair. Nobody decided this. No teacher announced a mourning period, no group of twelve-year-olds voted to...
I got my first programming job in 2000 from a job fair at the Minneapolis Convention Center after a thousand emailed resumes went nowhere.
O Caique, membro do...
I've just made a small release of Rogallo, bumping the version to v1.7.0. Most of the changes in this version aren't very visible, but quite a few things have changed under the hood. One change that might show up on occasion is the addition of an encoding fallback if you encounter an ISO-8859-1 file out in the wild...
I have music collection of over 12,000 tracks. I prefer to actually own my music (ie digital files) and being able to play it on any device I choose rather than using a service like Spotify. That said, I also prefer using OGG over MP3, and the majority of my music collection is (currently) in OGG Vorbis format. Over...
There’s good news and there’s bad news, but in reality not much is really good. The good, such that it is; AI bots could well put scammers out of work. The bad; the AI scammers are far more effective at deceiving people. Disturbingly though, these are scams that involve entering into a fake relationship with the...

I like Jellyfin. I do not like the part right before Jellyfin gets involved.A download finishes, but the name is full of release details Jellyfin does not need. The folder may have subtitles, artwork, a trailer, a featurette, or several episodes scattered through a season directory. Before any of it lands in the...
I just went through the queue of submissions to blogroll.org and probably deleted 95% of what was in there. This is not unusual, and has become more and more common lately. A big reason for this is clearly AI. The amount of slop submissions I’m getting is trending upwards, unfortunately. The other big reason is...
Photo by Cash Macanaya on Unsplash This is a bit of a rant. There have been a lot of reports recently about LLM agents “going rogue”. Hacking into other companies, doing stuff that they weren’t supposed to do. I’m not saying it’s great that they’re doing these things. But I am taking issue with the reporting. These...
Luring me in with a kooky redhead in a bookshop is, once again, a sneaky lawyer's trick that I'm ashamed to say worked again! Shame on me, etc. Magic is real, there are objects imbued with magic that allow the holder to conjure the unbelievable; the so-called Unknowable Objects. They have been hidden from the world...
A helpful community for people who write on the webA few months ago, James kindly invited me to join a Signal group for a community he was forming that included writers and bloggers on the web. He had been thinking about this for a while, and he felt a closed group chat was as good a place to start as any. He had...
Derek Jarman’s Prospect Cottage Last Friday my friends and I drove east to Dungeness, a headland on the Kent coast. It’s most well-known for two nuclear power stations (both non-operational now), Prospect Cottage (the home of the late film-maker and artist Derek Jarman), and looking like a completely alien...
It’s morning, just after dawn, which is bad enough, but it’s also Monday, which makes it worse. I don’t hate Mondays in some existential Garfield sort of way, but it’s still a rough way to start the week. The dog is having a morning apparently, and refuses to do all of her morning business outside. She hates Mondays...
Ever since Cocoa’s passing, LC and I have constantly looked for signs that, in some ways, she is still with us. Whether it’s the wind that caresses us as a symbol of her little T-rex arm hugs, the fur we find in certain places as her saying hello, or the faint whispers of her barks, we find ourselves looking for...
Open this website and press some keys to see them floating in vacuum. Mouse moves the camera in 360º. (There is a simple version where the characters fall from the text field.)
(Photo of lesbian cats unrelated) Lilith and Gargoyle having a midday loaf-off The University of Chicago's Law School published a memo last month about their new policy for first year law students - the memo is titled: Rethinking Legal Education in the AI Era and I recommend reading it. The main takeaway is that...
With Blaugust running wild, and me posting almost daily, I don’t know what to mention here on this intro that is super interesting. Just go and check my posts! They are pretty fun. Here are some of the small things that aren’t enough for a full blogpost, or maybe they are, we’ll see. My weeknotes, From August 4 to...
We work under a year to year award, so the end of every fiscal year comes with a little cloud over it. Well, we might not actually get it this year. That cloud has been sitting on me lately and I'm having a very strong sense of deja vu. It's the same feeling I had during my previous periods of job uncertainty, and...
Thor brought together a handful of friends from across the country to celebrate his birthday and our itinerary is shrouded in secrecy — but we're told it will include some of his favorite things in and around New York City.Currently Listening: The Zombies “Time of the Season”Reply via email
Another book I finished in July was Muskism: A Guide for the Perplexed by Quinn Slobodian and Ben Tarnoff. It argues that instead of seeing Musk as an individual or even an exceptional outlier, he should be seen as a symptom of a bigger playbook, something other forces in society brought forward and shaped. Just...
I saw the Hidizs AP30 Music Boy on Reddit and got curious enough to reach out to Hidizs to see if they’d send me one to review. It’s a palm-sized DAP that launched on Kickstarter on 23 July 2026, and it’s pitching itself as a companion device rather than a standalone player, something to clip to a bag, hang round a...
I wrote this twelve years ago. I was looking for something to repost today, my birthday, to reflect my overwhelming gratitude for being alive. This fits. I needed this, and maybe you did too. I have adjusted my examples to reflect my life in the past years. This is such a powerful exercise to break through fear....
“Unwritten” by Natasha Bedingfield Listen on Apple Music Your browser does not support the audio element. What’s your favorite song about second chances? As someone who often stares at a blank page, who tends to start new ventures by writing about them, and who has had many second chances throughout his life, I can...
Through an odd coincidence, I started writing this post when the Sun was in Cancer, but by the time I’m done and get it published, the Sun will be in Leo. Don’t worry, this isn’t an astrology post—I don’t want to anger John Gruber—but it is a further coincidence that I’ve been puttering around with observational...
Feeling blue after the end of Heartstopper A scene from the webcomic and the show side-by-side, featuring the protagonists Nick and Charlie, and Nick’s dog Nellie. Ever since discovering the show, I’ve been hooked on the comics as well. Last night, we watched the final movie in the Heartstopper series that has been...
I’m not very good at growing vegetables, I have found (though I keep trying), but things are happening in my garden, nonetheless! This year, I’ve noticed a few newcomers to my usual flower patches, and one visitor in particular has brought some friends. If you like looking at insects (mostly winged ones), and want...
Four billion years ago, in the hydrothermal vents at the bottom of the world where serpentine is forged, chemistry trembled with the promise of consciousness and matter began its long metabolic pilgrimage toward mind. Perhaps our saline cells remember it: how we, pilgrims of the possible, crawled out of the tide...
The second doge of Venice, Marcellus, might not have been a Venetian duke, but a Byzantine official.
♠ hwatch: hwatch: alternative watch command with history, diff view, JSONL logging, and change hooks. since 2018. In addition,...
