(This is a meta post about this very blog. If that’s not interesting to you, skip to the next one!) Here are some improvements I’ve made to Unsung in recent months. Always curious of your feedback or pointers to places that do these things better! Weekly emails I made it so clicking on every (non-YouTube) video or...
The reason I write more Go than JavaScript nowadays is not because there is anything wrong with the language, but because I’m tired of the ecosystem. The language on its own is really good, it is the first programming language that I became productive with and I’m still motivated to keep up with the new additions to...
“One of humanity’s oldest disciplines and one of its newest inventions feel distinctly made for each other.” That’s a line from an article published in the New York Times today about the demand for philosophers working on artificial intelligence. It continues: A.I. presents a fresh way for philosophers to ask...
Building your own keyboard is a rite of passage for those caught up in the ergonomic rabbit hole. So, it was only a matter of time before I went all the way and did so. However, as a complete noob when it comes to soldering, I had a rough time getting started. I hope that this brief guide saves you hours of anguish!...
Antecedently: Dojo-mojo; MICE TO MEET YOU; the Hoisting of Hattie and other womanhandlings WE RECONFUCKINGVENE Kurosawa (A Dick): “Alright, hey, if this is about your friend Dmitri you can have him, I’m done with him, y’all’re a bunch of freaks but I’m an honest man, I did hurt him but you did shoot me, can we be...
Another data point for my thoughts about blog posts and especially weeknotes being personal or not: Roy read my post and decided to be less personal. Which is interesting – he does also mention that he is writing a private journal as well, which I am not. Basically what I blog and what I remember organically are all...
Welcome to the 94th issue of De Programmatica Ipsum, about Killer Apps. In this edition: Graham argues that the “Killer App” phenomenon is in danger of extinction. Adrian enumerates some examples of “App Killers”. In our Vidéothèque section, we watch the moment Dan Bricklin told his team about the release of the...
In colonial times, almost all of Manhattan was farmland. These farms—with hundreds of acres of vegetables, fruit orchards, and livestock, anchored by a clapboard farmhouse—were slowly given over to the development of the asphalt city. One unusual farm is considered the last holdout. The Benedetto Farm (sometimes...
I recently got an Xteink and it is a really cute little e-reader device! I thought I’d try hacking around on it, and it’s been fun to tweak. Custom firmware The most popular custom firmware for The Xteink is called CrossPoint Reader, which is fully open source and really great. Their website has ways to customize...
I thought there’d be no better way to celebrate Miles Davis’s centennial than to listen to his whole discography in chronological order (more on that later). Little did i know it’d change the way i see music. And it has nothing to do with Miles Davis himself. You see, i still have a sizeable CD collection, including...
Dad: “I was pulled over for drinking and driving. It’s only a 24-hour prohibition. Don’t tell your mom.” I thought he’d grown out of it. I thought I’d grown out of feeling anything for this.
It's perilous to disagree with someone as wise and thoughtful as Jeremy, but for the past fortnight his post in response to Apple's iOS 27 marketing invades my quiet moments like a cricket in the attic. "Why", I ruminate, "should someone who understands the state of play give Apple credit for doing less than the...
2026-07-05Hello!I photographed the July 4 fireworks at night with a long exposure. Some fireworks gave sparkles of a golden color, and others lit up the night sky with big embers of yellow and blue.Whether the fireworks were timed at the exact right time or the exact wrong time, I haven't decided.Driving out to a...
I was originally going to title this “Find the cat” but it’s not terribly hard to spot the shy one. Been checking on Oliver through the week in exchange for cold lemonade. (Who am I kidding, I would’ve visited without anything in exchange.)Currently Listening: D'Leesa “Nocturnal”Reply via email
I made some updates to my notes blog, including a change to how my “Shuffle” feature worked. Figured I’d blog about it. Shuffle? On a Blog? At the time of this writing, I have 974 “notes” that I’ve published. For fun, I have a “shuffle” button that digs up a random note from the past. I like to press it from time to...
As a person with a modest passion for archivability of internet ephemera, I find the single-link-in-bio model to be so, so tormentful. How could a creator ever confidently say “check out the link in my bio” if they know that in the future, the link they are directing people to press will have changed to something...
I’ve recently added a banner to the top of my site with a countdown until September 1st, 2026–it’s on the main site, so if you only visit the blog, you probably haven’t seen it. This is the date on which Google will roll out a change that they’ve been talking about for some time now, initially in Brazil, Indonesia,...
Late with the highlights, but at least the blog is now virtually up-to-date, or was before this week’s Proper Day Out in Sawley. Always best to start the month with a Dalek. A typical looking June map, lots of Lancashire, Yorkshire, London and Kent, but not much else. No idea why I’ve stuck a red marker in Norwich;...
# Ttile Category Genre Comments 1 PEACE -ChRocktikal Song Rock The vocalist is from a K-pop group called Dreamcatcher that I used to listen a lot. I always thought her voice suits rock really well and now she's in a band so it was a pleasant surprise! The album also has some song that I liked :) 2 RAKUNELAMA - GOSU...
For the past 25 years, I’ve primarily worked with just one program editor in my professional life: the VB6 editor. But my journey began much earlier - in the early 90s. Back then, things were a bit simpler, or at least more straightforward. Initially, it was just a plain text editor. The first environment worthy of...
29th June - 5th July It's light at 5am, the memory of last night's thunderstorm still lingers in an overcast sky and fat wet raindrops falling from leaves to the ground with a slow. rhythmic. slap. The birds are clearing their throats to begin the dawn chorus. The air smells wet. On the walk down the dirt track...
Life Notes Monday was a day off, already can’t quite remember what I did with it. Oh yes, a wander round the shops and some sushi. Nice to hang out with my beautiful wife, sans Jack for a change. Tuesday was the day of the Alanis Morissette gig, and it was glorious. The weather held, the crowd was in good spirits,...
Argomento leggero, carino e coccoloso che fa seguito a un post altrettanto leggero. Regà, di 'sti tempi va così, va bene? Accolliamocelo.Comunque, dicevo, moderazione sul Fediverso. L'altro giorno nella timeline di Phanpy (best client per Mastodon raga, Cape ti voglio molto bene) mi son trovato "back to back" due...
I've had a busy last 6 weeks or so, probably something to do with getting married and then a honeymoon (it was great btw, some photos from the honeymoon of Sweden's High Coast to come when I get a chance to compile them). But That didn't stop me from continuing (just) my piece a month aim that I set myself at the...
Well, I didn't make it to London on Friday. The Euston train got no further than Milton Keynes (of largely evil memory), where damage to overhead cables up ahead had ended all serious possibility of getting to London, short of limping in very late, packed into a cattle-truck train and with no guarantee of a smooth...
Yesterday I announced that I'm planning to build a USB-IR receiver for my media centre. Let's look in a bit more detail at what I'm trying to do here. I have three components: An infrared receiver An Arduino A remote Infrared receiver, Arduino clone, Apple remote I want to connect the infrared receiver to the...
A few things I shared over on social.omgmog.net between 29 June and 5 July, without much comment at the time, but worth a second look.
Plus how text based visuals make life harder for the vision impaired This week: Putting money on the table to develop a daily writing habit Text based visuals and the vision impaired Pay yourself to form a writing habit I write words every day. But plenty of days go by where I don’t write write. I’d really like to...
