IndieWebCamp Nuremberg 2026, Create Day. I had a chance to launch sylLabel notebook and migrate my magic 8-ball. sylLabel Local storage, no server/tracking, one .html file. A quick place to write, draft poetry-prose, prosetry on the go for appealing screen-captures and what-not. A while ago, I hunted for a syllable...
“Why don’t you use WhatsApp?” The short answer is privacy. I should be upfront: I do still have a WhatsApp account. Kids’ sports teams use it to coordinate with parents, and I check those groups when necessary. The app is hidden from my phone’s home screen, notifications are off, and WhatsApp does not have access to...
I quite enjoyed this talk from Bryan Cantrill where he discusses the difficult engineering problems they overcame while working on their company Oxide. Some of the problems they ran into were bugs. But these weren’t any ordinary bugs, they were company-destroying bugs: bugs that, if they couldn’t be fixed, would...
Checking in! Some zines and jams I participated in, a bit of website housekeeing, and This Week in Links!
Fontaine allows the user to define detailed font configurations and set them on demand. For example, one can have a regular-editing preset and another for presentation-mode (these are arbitrary, user-defined symbols): the former uses small fonts which are optimised for writing, while the latter applies typefaces...
Installing SerenityOS on My Old ThinkPad T60 2026-06-28 I recently had the urge to play around with SerenityOS on real hardware. Since the project is slightly catered towards older machines, I figured my ThinkPad T60 was a perfect candidate for running on bare metal. The following is a loose guide for those...

I was a guest on James's Wonders of Web Weaving podcast and it was such a lovely conversation. We talked about old teenage blogs, how I found the IndieWeb community, why I think now is the best time to be your full weird self online, and I accidentally held myself publicly accountable for a side project. This was...
Last night we drove out to the coast with plans to try and capture lightning sprites from a forecasted MCS over the Netherlands. If the MCS went to plan, and we had clear skies in between us, then we should have been within ideal sprite capturing range (100-200 miles). Typically things didn't quite go as hoped for,...
⚠️A heads-up: the following article covers a major technical issue that W Social has been experiencing since June 22 (for 7 consecutive days). As I also discuss a possible solution to this problem, by the time you read this post the issue may have been resolved. But questions remain about how the situation has been...

Because typewriter-style graphics are cool and the algorithmic internet is not Goodie 1 - The Progress Bar Someone kindly gave me a typewriter last month. Playing with it has reminded me of the creative ways we used to use monospaced fonts, because at one time that’s all there were. Progress bars and charts could be...
Pride was a bit truncated for me this year. Eryn, EJ, and I went to the Trans March on Friday and (part of) the Dyke March on Saturday, but I spent Sunday—the day of the Pride Parade—flying to Geneva for work. Eryn and EJ, however, met up with Erin at the parade on Sunday and had a great time. A slice of the rainbow...
It’s been a while since my last update; I wanted to finish refreshing the style of my website before writing anything. The update took quite some time. At first, I implemented a design with big full-width header images on blog posts, and it looked pretty good. But, for some reason, after putting in all of the effort...

Life Notes Survived the heat wave. We got to the high 20s here which, frankly, is both scary and so totally out of our norm that it was a struggle. I do wonder what kind of world my son will grow up in. Speaking of, I had a day at Blair Drummond Safari Park on Saturday with Jack, got there at 9:30am, left at 4pm. He...
“The Washington Post” reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein uncover the details of the Watergate scandal that leads to President Richard Nixon’s resignation. Great conspiracy thriller about one of the biggest political scandals in US history (so far), directed by Alan J. Pakula (who also directed The Pelican...
Our third novelette is available directly form us now and available anywhere books are sold starting July 1. A reluctant seer, gifted with only a "certain sense," opens his door to a desperate man babbling about a face—a face that haunts him. The trail leads to a deserted chateau; the obsessive work of a vanished...
!journal: As I'm typing these words, it's 6:07am on a Sunday morning. I know it's humid out because the humidity is causing the finger print sensors on the door locks to beep. The cat feeders have just hit and the cats are milling about. I can hyperfocus on things. I've mostly thought of this as a feature and not a...
The Laziest Generationby Ibrahim DialloIbrahim talks about house prices in the US, how it's only getting worse, and the perception from previous generations that kids today are somehow lazy because they can't afford a house before the age of 40.Read post ➡ Being the father of 2 young people, this worries me too....
I’m in the market for an air conditioning unit. With temperatures currently hitting heatwave conditions in the UK and much of Western Europe, I think everyone is in the market for an air conditioning unit. The suppliers of domestic air con are not really plentiful in my neck of the woods. Why would they be? This is...
It isn't often that a sermon turns up in my inbox, but today – the 4th Sunday after Pentecost – one did, and it's rather good. Here's a link...https://www.rememberingsion.com/p/foundation-faith-sermon-4th-sunday-pentecostAnd of course this led me straight back to Les Murray's great poem of faith, 'The...
Antecedently: Genius locomoti; chloroform-fitting shoulder pads; Throw Hattie From The Train While talking upgrades and progression, William proposes an implanted multi-tool, the Greedy Gadget, for to begin his journey on the road to transhumanist ikon and one step closer to having an omni-tool; it combines:...
In my defense, there's so many of them It's just absolute cardinal hours here I guess. They're everywhere. All the time. I don't mind!! but it means you have to deal with looking at them if you visit my blog and I hope we can all be ok with that. Happy Sunday. .slider-before, .slider-after { user-select: none; } /*...
Ines Zgnoc/Amazone 7, The Different View. CC BY-SA 3.0 image via Wikimedia Commons. She wasn’t the first, of course, to put the thought into words, but Laura (Riding) Jackson asserted pretty clearly that if you have to explain what a poem is about or is doing, you might as well be writing prose; you can’t say a poem...
First there were five houses. Completed in 1855, this unbroken row of Gothic-style loveliness stood out like an idiosyncratic interruption in a Brooklyn Heights neighborhood of refined Greek Revival brownstones. The striking three-story houses, with their arched roofs, tall windows, and cast-iron lintels, were also...
In a previous life, i was a history major researching the French-Catholic migration to the Canadian Prairies between 1870 and 1915. Published in 1891, Rerum novarum is the foundational text of the Catholic church’s social doctrine. Without overstating its immediate impact, it played a part in the gradual split of...
June 2026. Yerevan. Armenia. Breakfast at our “Boutique” hotel was certainly colourful; it was the only free breakfast we managed that week, with no food till 9am and those early tour starts. Tucked just outside the ring road, next to international embassies and the Soviet chess club (look closely), it wasn’t...
Favorited https://jonathanturley.org/2026/06/28/white-time-dutch-professor-argues-that-time-itself-is-racist/ by Jonathan Turley (Jonathan Turley) These authors largely cite each other with little attention to countervailing viewpoints. It becomes a closed, self-perpetuating system as academics invite one another to...
Apple might have undone the macOS Tahoe menu icons decision, but this wasn’t the only contentious iconography issue in their ecosystem. On his blog, Jim Nielsen writes how Apple filed away so much expression by forcing rigid icon bureaucracy in macOS. Nielsen focuses mostly on distinctiveness; previously, you could...

I try to do my best with my technology stack, by ensuring it meets my own morals and standards for life. I do this via a combination of informed choices; supporting independent developers; self-hosting. A combination of these help me feel I am doing the right thing. What is the Right thing? That is the million-dollar...
A few things I shared over on social.omgmog.net between 22 and 28 June, without much comment at the time, but worth a second look.
2026-06-28Hello! While sorting through my digital pile of files and folders, I found these old images from a New York City photoshoot. With professional gear that I borrowed for this event, I pointed the camera and got in close to a model dressed up all sinister. They had covered their entire face in bright makeup...
This is my monthly link dump, a regular monthly series containing a mix of links to interesting blog posts I’ve read from the past month covering arts & culture, myth, folklore, landscape punk, hauntology, anarchism, utopianism, the gothic, neo-fabulism, and the Weird - all discovered through my RSS feed reader...
I've just done a quick update to BlogMore, bumping the version to v2.44.1. This release fixes an issue with auto-cover generation where, if you changed some properties relating to a post (or the blog as a whole), the auto-covers weren't being updated to reflect those changes. A good example is the description of a...
I picked up a Palo Alto Cloudgenix ION 2000 off of eBay and decided to try and stick OPNsense on it. It has a ethernet ports, 4GB of RAM, 128GB SSD, and an Intel Atom CPU. What I hadn't considered was a lack of any video out on this thing, making it difficult to load a different OS. After some searching, I came...
On my miniblog I've documented my new routine of doing a minimum of 10 minutes of exercise a day. I haven't done my ten minutes yesterday and today doesn't look good either. Now i wrote that down, I could feel shame or disappointment. Just this decision to hit pause makes me realise I've truly let go of the...
22nd June - 28th June Midsummer. Summer Solstice. The start of Summer. The beginning of H1. The end of Q2. Whatever you want to call it, we've hit the halfway point. Week 26. And, as some of you in the UK may be aware, it's a tad warmer than usual. Maybe now you'll turn your TV off instead of standby… 👀 Work has...
Fred Kozlowski: My favorite figure in the post-Roman period is Theoderic — ruling 493 to 526, twenty years after the “fall” of Rome. He took over the structure of the Roman Empire and ruled it as a functionally emperor-like figure. He was a Goth and an Arian Christian, or in other words, a barbarian and a heretic. I...
I literally had to stop what I was doing and write about this immediately. This is a nerdy, programming language thing, but it’s a thing that made me smile and filled me with hope. I first heard about the Zig Programming Language years ago. But I’m a very cautious adopter of new tech so it just sat there as “a thing...

I guess it was the heat that got to people’s brains. This week I more than ever in the just about nine years I’ve been on Mastodon I had to block and mute and filter to keep my timeline halfway sane. On Monday evening I went to a photo walk in Basel. The vibe in the city was great, everyone was in a relaxed evening...
