We'll, I've been thinking a lot about photos, as you might have noticed. A few months ago I published Memories, my photo-blog-kinda-thing, and I loved it, but as it was a separate project from this website, I ignored it most of the time. One of the things that I never liked about Memories was the fact that the...
The best thing that happened this week This week we had our quarterly offsite with the entire tech team. Of course we talked a lot about AI, visited the Google offices in Amsterdam, and had a ton of fun. We've got such a good team going and the momentum never stops. 10/10! It's also been a busy week on my website as...
The Challenge of Finding Backlinks I recently stumbled upon blog posts by Herbert Lui (How to find people who link to your blog) and Maddy Miller (I wish reply articles worked better; see also my reply post) discussing some of the challenges in engaging in website-to-website discussions. Both blog posts noted that...
I think that noa makes a great point about the nascent “choose European!” trend going on over there. While moving away from American hegemony is a necessary step (and not only in the tech or services realms), replacing one hegemon for another is a mistake humans have made again and again throughout our history....

Liked 9.0.0 — Growing Up by Matthias Pfefferle (ActivityPub for WordPress) One piece was missing, though: other people couldn’t add your WordPress blog to their lists, because your site never told their server who is allowed to do that. ActivityPub 9.0.0 fixes this with the new Default Starter Kit policy setting:...
Every so often I get the urge to change how Emacs looks. Ever since I finally fell to the dark side, my Emacs has stayed looking pretty much the same. I like how it looks, but I do keep having this urge to find a darker theme, and to also make things just a wee bit more minimal. At one point I was very much about,...
Hyperpole 2 Results"> Hyperpoles came and went, and the biggest surprise was seeing two Ferraris getting knocked out after Hyperpole 1 while both the Genensis Magmas entered Hyperpole 2 and finishing on 6 and 9. Tomorrow it’s time to see how they will stack against each other on the long run, with the Warm-up...
A few moments ago I was reviewing and editing the short stories I've written and suddenly noticed that the last one had a part of text missing, it was about 3 paragraphs for what I can remember, it's clear that it was a mistake, I probably deleted it when I was writing the continuation last time. I checked older...
In game development, there is this strange effect known as “tunneling.” It happens when you do collision detection. Imagine a simple situation where every time you move a cube, you also test whether it touches the wall – and if it does, you make it bounce off of it. This works great, but if you move and detect the...
A sausage I’ll remember for a long long time. I love Krakow. I’ve been there four times in the last 10 years, granted it’s a bit biased as I talked about before – my brother got married there in 2016 and having that knowledge on where to go, where to avoid and how to have a good time really helps. But sometimes you...
Postgres 19 finally gives us a clean way to do read-after-write across replicas. Without it, here’s the problem: you write a row to the primary then you immediately read it back and that query goes to a replica but the replica hasn’t replayed the write yet, so you get stale data or nothing at all The usual...

June 2026. Sheffield. From the Park Hill flats we followed the path of the tram toward town, with the UK’s scruffiest tourist sign at the Park Square roundabout. Much of central Sheffield has been modernised beyond recognition in recent years; heck, we’ve even got a Pret a Manger* ! There’s a big building site where...
This is the first time in history when a whole generation is being told or tempted to have a machine write for them. You are one of one, unprecedented in the history of human evolution. There’s only one of you. So to give your voice to a machine to say speak for me, I’m going to be silent, and I’m going to tell a...
June 12, 2026 For the last couple of weeks I've been testing Chromium-based browsers on my M4 MacBook Pro, thinking I might switch from Safari or at least find a new backup browser. The truth is, I don't have a good reason to leave Safari other than a few minor irritations. Firefox is currently my backup, but it has...
Dear reader, As an AI skeptic, Apple’s this year’s WWDC presentation was painful to watch. While the improvements to speed, responsiveness, and the Liquid Glass design were welcome, the biggest talking point was AI, which felt obnoxious even if Apple’s software chief Craig Federighi tried to make a point about Apple...
I am neither an optimist nor a pessimist. Jesus Christ is risen from the dead! — Lesslie Newbigin To hope radically is to see the new possibilities for human flourishing where none seemed possible before. […] Radical hope, as I have been defining it, involves a deep confidence that there is a way of living...
The excellent The social network (2010), which dramatized the founding of Facebook, is getting a “companion piece” this October: The social reckoning. This time, it will depict the events surrounding the release of the “Facebook Papers” — internal documents leaked to the press in 2021 by Frances Haugen, a former...
Brand new Evanescence album! Exciting times! This Arkansas symphonic metal band pioneered the noughties alt-metal boom by blending American stadium rock sensibilities with cherry-picked classical elements to create something that failed to satisfy fans of either genre. However, following their Grammy winning diamond...
One of the two creatures depicted above is Garmegula, a giant monster I made up many years ago because I wanted to write some very short allegories about very tall monsters. Now he is the mascot of this site, in part because he staggers ever onward despite reeeally not having it together. It’s a quality I feel very...
I run a group chat which is a space for in-depth discussions about long-form articles/blogs/books or anything else that fascinates us. Unfortunately, since the group chat is on WhatsApp, new members can’t access old entries, so this post is a compilation of all the suggested links posted in the group so far....
Translations: Russian A while ago I was reading about Wayland and this quote stuck with me: A stated goal of Wayland is “every frame is perfect”. And I think this is a goal we should all aspire to. Wayland is talking about the technical side of things (modern GPU stacks are very complex and Wayland is trying to take...
I am at IITM/Chennai for Paradox. I have been here since 2022, since the first Paradox. The fest and the crowd have grown bigger. I came by car with friends A&S. We took Old Madras Road and stopped at Sriperumbudur for a quick visit to the Rajiv Gandhi memorial. Rajiv Gandhi Memorial at Sriperumbudur I explored a...
Happy Aethelflaed Day, everyone! Aethelflaed (870-918), daughter of Alfred the Great, is remembered as the Lady of the Mercians, and is something of a feminist icon. With her brother, who later became King Edward the Elder, she ruled over much of Mercia from 911, successfully fighting off the Vikings. She died on...

I made a thing It felt a bit like going back to kindergarten: I made a thing today. A thing that’ll brighten up my home office. This is how it went: first, I spent a lot of time going through old nature and bird magazines, looking for the perfect pictures. I took out my scissors and got cutting. I hope I’ve made my...
You believe something. The market will turn. The hire won’t last. The institution is rotting. You’ve done the work, the reasoning holds, you’re fairly sure. Before you act, ask one thing: will the world ever grade this belief, or only you? It sounds trivial. It’s the most useful sorting move I know, and careful...
84 years ago today a thirteen-year-old girl was given an autograph book, bound with red-and-white checked cloth, for her birthday. She decided to use it as a diary and chronicle her life; tragically, only for the next two years. That was Anne Frank, a young Jewish girl, born in Germany, who became an unassuming...

My friend and I have a theory that when you rent an apartment, it starts going downhill after two years. Everything usually starts off well (the building is nice and clean, the amenities are good, the maintenance team is responsive, the apartment is in good condition, etc.), but for some reason, after renewing the...
OverviewThis week was a reminder that attackers do not need a clever path when the control plane is exposed. VPN gateways, mobile access infrastructure, ERP systems, browsers, developer platforms, and even operational systems all produced the same practical lesson: high-leverage systems need fast patching, tight...
Forty nine people at Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando, were murdered ten years ago today in what was at the time the deadliest mass shooting in American history. It was Latin Night at Pulse; most of the victims were gay Latino men. The deadliest act of homophobia in my lifetime. Two weeks later I marched in the...
My research for my next book, The Age of Content, has been in full swing for at least a year now. That book is going to be a short one (Polity wants me to keep it to 30K words). In order to show my work, I am creating a regular series on this blog, "_____: The Year of the Content Creator," where I discuss key texts.
The moment I bought my Bambu Lab A1 mini 3D printer, I went looking for photography-related designs I could print. I spent a lot of filament on things that looked promising in theory but quickly ended up in a drawer. However, several accessories have proved useful in my aviation photography pursuits.
Andreas blogged about adding the bubbles.town widget to his blog. He used the vote widget provided by bubbles.town, which is just a bit of JavaScript you put on your pages. It's well documented and dead simple, so if you just want this on your site with no fuss, that's the way to go. I use 11ty as my blogging...
💡Read The Devil Went Down to Georgia Auto Mechanics now!If you were to sell your soul for a car, what kind would it be?I am probably superstitious, because I will not say the words, “I would sell my soul for…”And would you do it if it never meant having to fix it or get an oil change ever again? It is tempting.When’s...

When we call dired from Lisp, we can pass it a list of files instead of a directory. This gives us a fully fledged Dired buffer for those files. My most common use-case is to produce flat listing, so that I do not have to go searching in exactly which directory some file is (e.g. in the Downloads folder there is...

When I open a link, say on Hacker News, and I see a blog post or a GitHub README obviously written by AI, I feel a few things. I feel offended, because it’s like I’ve been tricked, like the author thinks I’m a rube who won’t notice or mind. I feel sad at how common this experience is, how many people are happy to...
2026-06-12Hello!I'll first address the black circle surrounding the image. This photograph was taken with a three-second exposure time, meaning that the camera sensor was exposed to the light for three seconds, gathering all the photons and making an image. Normally, photos are taken within tiny fractions of a...
digiKam MySQL Database Upgrade WoesEver since I left Adobe Lightroom in mid-2025, I’ve been using digiKam from KDE for digital asset management (DAM). I quite like using it to manage my extensive library of photographs (+100k images). But almost every time there’s a version upgrade, the internal MySQL database...
