Read on the website: It turns out, Armenian has at least one stenography system. The one designed in 1888 by a monastic order from Venice! Althought it’s imperfect, it’s a nice historic rarity.

I linked to a bunch of speedrunning videos before, but this 43-minute video by hbomberguy from 2018 is a good introduction to the whole concept and why people care: It’s really funny, romantic (maybe a bit too romantic), and it has a few great examples and explanations of the different kinds of speedruns that...
So a fox came into the field and took a chicken from right in front of us at dinner time last night. Unfortunately we couldn't get to it in time. Our rooster tried, but he wasn't successful either. We have her last egg, so we're gonna try and hatch it. 😟 Thanks for reading this post via RSS. RSS is ace, and so are...
The "Istoria Veneticorum" from around the year 1000, is the first work in the historiography of Venice.
You believe something. The market will turn. The hire won’t last. The institution is rotting. You’ve done the work, the reasoning holds, you’re fairly sure. Before you act, one question sorts almost everything that follows: will the world ever grade this belief, or only you? It sounds trivial. It is the most useful...
I read a recent BleepingComputer article about AI-driven threats exposing the limits of MSP security stacks, and the central problem landed with me.Attackers are moving faster while a lot of MSP security operations still depend on technicians jumping between an RMM, EDR console, backup portal, ticketing system,...
Decided to separate this to its single books. The library has this excellent easy to read copy and the rest, so I'll be reading them apart instead. ?
A few weeks ago I gave myself permission to skip the intro of these posts if I can't think of anything interesting or clever to say, and I skipped it twice since then. Well, I've been informed that people miss the intro, so I'm going to do my best to bring it back ;) There's just not a lot happening in my life...
I very much prefer the fediverse aka Mastodon (yes, I know) over the other text-based social networks. Especially over the one that used to be so important to me.But it does have it downsides and I usually notice them when I am trying to see who else besides the people I follow is talking about stuff. Especially...

Escape from Alcatraz is one of the oldest triathlons in the country—it’s celebrating its forty-fifth anniversary this year—and involves jumping from the San Francisco Belle near Alcatraz Island into the cold waters of San Francisco Bay for a 2.4 km swim, a 29 km hilly bike ride through the Presidio of San Francisco...
Call me late to the party if you want, but I recently adopted Neovim as my new full-time text editor for work, and I have to say I’m very pleased of having done so. In case you don’t know (which given my audience, I’d be surprised to hear) Neovim is a successor of Vim, built since 2014 on a fork of version 7 point...
According to a May 27, 2026 report in Marketing Brew by Katie Hicks titled Why so many brands are releasing music videos, ” it seems brand-created music videos are making a comeback as marketers are increasingly feeling pressure to create organic, original content to break through on social, particularly with...
As I told you, I recently switched to mainly using NetBird instead of Tailscale. NetBird released their “Bring your own proxy” functionality on the cloud-hosted version today. That gave me the perfect reason to finally try a VPS at netcup. I ordered the smallest one with just one core and one gigabyte of memory, but...
June 2026. Teddington. London. Two cracking London pubs; one edging the beer, the other the “pub”. Back on the train that does the loop from Waterloo and back via Wimbledon, failing to take the killer shot of the Thames due to being on the wrong side of the train. And 20 minutes later off at Teddington, famous for...
Joyce Ferguson considered it a coincidence that a man in a baby-blue suit happened to walk up to her stalled Toyota Camry seconds after she muttered the words, “I would sell my soul to the devil if this car never broke down again.”“Do you mean that?” the stranger asked in a voice as silky as soymilk in a vegan latte...

Well, not to be left out of the great buy me a coffee debate, I thought I'd add my two cents. The original, at HakkerBlog, No, I Won't Buy You A Coffee, is a pretty cynical take on the topic of asking for contributions. I hardly think that someone posting their buy me a coffee link on their blog qualifies as...
A Two Old Men Disputing by Rembrandt (1628) - cropped Every now and then, whether it be at the Christmas dinner table or a friend's get-together, we find the conversation tends to meander its way to one of the most incendiary and charged topics of all: politics.1 In my experience, this usually happens later in the...
Check out As in guillotine... for more. NOTE: This is a meatier one than usual with a ton of links that could have been individual Things themselves, including the Bonus video. I couldn’t even squeeze in the article I co-wrote for Publishing Perspectives last week about the death throes of data-driven publishing,...
FlavorGraph is a large-scale graph network that combines data from over a million recipes with chemical compound information from 1,500+ flavor molecules to predict ingredient pairings. It uses graph embedding methods to represent foods as dense vectors, enabling data-driven food pairing suggestions that go beyond...
A quick little update to blogmore.el to fix a couple of issues introduced by the new YAML-parsing approach to reading frontmatter; both pretty much stemming from how falsy values are handled. Simply put, both boolean false values, and also empty values (something that could commonly happen with tags and series)...
Okay that's enough stirring the pot in the blogging sphere, didn't expect so many people to have to have an opinion on donating to blogs, but here we are. In hindsight I probably went to put too much emphasis on "blogging as a bussiness", but the responses haven't convinced me either. I'm just tired of money a part...
Oh yeah so a lot has been going on, this past week especially has been bonkers, and I’m super happy about things right now. FuralityFurality went great! I had a lot of fun seeing folks I hadn’t seen in a while, a heck of a lot of people checked out my booth, I gained a lot of new fans, and I contributed some of my...
Regular expression (Regex) is a skill I wish I have a better grasp on; but I’m slowly learning! For example, I often find myself searching for a particular string pattern to replace it with something else. Today, I learnt how to search for this pattern (Markdown bullet points): The start of a new line (^) Dash (-)...
... the ability to back up the contents of the card to an external storage device. I want to be able to plug an SSD directly into my camera's USB-C port and let the camera automatically back up all JPEGs and RAWs. That's it. It's neither a novel nor a technically impossible idea, so how come none of the current...
This essay is adapted from the nineteenth chapter of my book Figuring. In the first autumn of her thirties, Emily Dickinson wrote to her confidante and eventual editor Thomas Wentworth Higginson: I had a terror — since September — I could tell to none, and so I sing, as the Boy does by the Burying Ground — because I...
Those “Buy Me a Coffee” links have upset the anonymous Hakkerblog, who finds them annoying. No, I won’t buy you a coffee Gordon Mclean and Michael Harley have defended them as mostly harmless. Yes, buy me a coffee Re: No, I won’t buy you a coffee I have never monetized Newsonaut and never will, but that’s mainly...
Although hints of what was to come were there to see, The Social Network, the 2010 dramatisation of the founding of Facebook, had the hallmarks of a feel-good story. At least from the perspective of would-be entrepreneurs, whose next-big-thing idea, had, against the odds (of course), become the next-big-thing. A lot...
Postgres 19 finally gives us a clean way to do read-after-write across replicas. Without it, here’s the problem: you write a row to the primary then you immediately read it back and that query goes to a replica but the replica hasn’t replayed the write yet, so you get stale data or nothing at all The usual...
Edie has a very specific parameter when it comes to hanging out on the porch: The door must be fully open.Currently Listening: MUNA “So What”Reply via email
This musing was prompted by Robb’s post about pens. I have pondered all of this before but that was a while ago so I wonder where my passion now lies. Passion is wonderful I love people who are passionate about something —as long as it’s a positive passion for a good thing, if you are […]Thanks for reading and...
Nearly the only time the phone rings at the post office is when someone is calling to complain. When that happens, I do my best to listen and try to solve their problem. Unless you call and are an asshole. Insulting me (for problems I didn’t cause) or yelling at me (because you’re a baby) means that I’m far less...

2026-06-11Hello! I'm still not back home yet.I'll be able to talk about this trip as a whole with better accuracy once it's in the past and I have the power of hindsight and recollection, rather than an unfiltered and live stream of thought put into writing. In the meantime, I'll just focus on this one image.This...
I was under the impression that I had written an entry for In the night of the others (Μέσα στη νύχτα των άλλων) a long time ago: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3XvkZNbO-eg. It turns out that I did not. Though I have commented before on other pieces of the Trypes (Τρύπες) band: Train (2022-06-28) New dizziness...

It was clear that Google’s unilateral abandonment of the quid pro quo principle of search—now effectively replaced by an AI-generated summary—poses a threat to the internet and will eventually backfire. Now there is a court ruling from Germany that holds Google directly responsible for false statements in its...
... but collectively, we haven't yet figured out how. Yet! Helen De Cruz and the 2+1 Experiment The inspired advocacy of the late (dearly missed) Helen De Cruz convinced the American Philosophical Association to try out what they called the "2+1" model for their three annual conferences: two in-person, one remote,...
I thought it would be fun to list every single physical game I own, and try to justify my purchasing desitions. Honestly though, it will be a bit painful too. It will be a paragraph per game, so it should not be that long. I will also note how worth the purchase is or will be once I play it, in my opinion. This is...
