Spaces are still available on tomorrow’s Gilded Age Mansion & Memorials RIverside Drive walking tour. We’ll explore the backstory of this winding, scenic drive and the houses and monuments that marked it as millionaire mile that rivaled Fifth Avenue. The forecast is for spring sunshine—join us at 1 pm for an...
Entangled Life by Merlin Sheldrake is a fantastic book all about mushrooms and fungi but what made it a breezy read for me was how weird they are. It’s like Merlin got his hands on creatures from another dimension where the rules of biology simply don’t apply. First: Merlin goes into great depth about genes and how...
Reading Matt's post, "Why I Don't Use A Dedicated Music Player", with great interest. A dedicated Music Player is something I keep coming back to, time and time again but never actually get around to buying. For much the same reason as Matt; in the cold light of day, I can't quite see the point! I don't listen to a...
This past Tuesday I typed C-x C-c in Emacs for the last time after 20 years of daily use. Though nearly half that time was gradually retiring it, switching to modal editing, then to Vim. Emacs is a platform, and I’d grown accustomed to its applications, especially those I built myself. There was no particular hurry,...
Mending...
BlogMore has had a new release, bumping the version to v2.16.0. There are two main changes in this update, both coming from a single idea: internal back-links. Where it makes sense, I always try and link posts in this blog to other related posts, but I've never really had a sense of how interconnected things are....
You can learn new things. Pixel art, touch typing, 3d modelling, music, calligraphy, wood working, knitting, a language. Whatever is practical and calls to you, you can learn. In the long term, learning new things is fun and makes life richer in ways you can’t even imagine, and it’s a time investment that will pay...
Since my Framework had a coffee bath, I've been using a ThinkPad T480 that I picked up from eBay for £285 ($385). This has been my main laptop for a few days now, and I have some thoughts, so I thought I'd share them since I've read mixed reviews on these plucky little laptops - everything from: They're the best...
(You can click on these.) Addendum to last week’s newsletter: I learned about the wiby.me surprise button from Ethan Marcotte’s links feed. Thanks Ethan! Let’s not get stepped on today. —Brendan
The Radxa ROCK 3a Since we got a new thermostat, along with a new heat pump last year, we’ve been connecting that to the Open Source home automation software Home Assistant. This hasn’t been to do anything fancy, but Home Assistant produces graphs that are a bit prettier than those from the app that is provided with...

Calibre2OPDS for Nextcloud So my Calibre library is synced and lives in my server via Nextcloud, which I also have on my Desktop syncing to the Calibre program. I used to use Google Drive to just send books to Kobo. But then... Just discovered https://gitlab.com/oldnomad/calibre_opds and I have been playing with...
Twitter originally had a character limit of 140, based on the limit of SMS messages of 160, with 20 reserved for the username, many years later it was increased to 280. Bluesky's limit is 300, on Mastodon it can differ server to server but the default is set to 500. So how long is a microblog post, and is the number...
At 22, Derek Sivers had $12,000 in the bank, paid $333 a month for a room in a Queens apartment with three roommates, never ate out, and kept his total expenses at $500 a month. He played music for $300 a show. Two gigs covered everything. He was free. Later he built a company and sold it for $22 million. He gave it...
Yesterday, I found a post i think we're obsessed with aesthetic on the Discovery Feed. It featured quite a few nice quotes. My favourite was this one: It's a real "people die when they are killed" kind of quote. Your first reaction is probably going to be some faint amusement, accompanied by a thought like Well,...
a half-assed review -- Need for Speed: Underground (2002)"> Rrrrum-dum-dum du-ru-ru-rum-dum-dum The song that put Lil’ Jon & the Eastside Boyz on the map is the unmistakable hint that you’ve opened Need for Speed: Underground, which was the 7th instalment in the series and also made the “Need for Speed Seven” phrase...
Roshan: Wikipen [[File:Screenshot_-_Wikipen.png|thumb|Wikipen - my blogpost authoring native client]] The promise of LLMs writing personal software has been quite realized for me. Almost every day I have a new piece of software whose user is likely to be only me. A few days ago, I had Claude and Codex work on...
It's been 4 months since I've made a break with Trek. Heck, it's final time to return! This marks it the first episode I've seen in my post-smartphone era, and it shows. We start with most of the Borg-children leaving the crew. It's the second episode, so I guess authors had bigger plans which never came to...

Toată lumea are.
2026-04-25Hello! Let's address the elephant in the room: yes, this article has been published very late. It is less likely to happen in the future now that I've made some changes. Just pretend it's Earth Day.Happy Earth Day! A few days ago, I volunteered for two environment-related events: an Arbor Day at a local...
One of the aspects of being a parkrun ambassador that I really enjoy is jumping in the car or on the bike on a Saturday morning and heading to a parkrun event. I have blogged before about using my NENDY to decide where I should go, which is all well and good, but it’s not the only way I choose. Each event can only...
Zine#48 🎵 Sometimes It Snows in April - Prince News | Article The 'Paperwork Flood': How I Drowned a Bureaucrat before dinner. by Robert Kingett
As I wrote before, recently I got myself a XTEINK X4, even the blogpost is not that old I got it a little more than a week ago. After using it active several days I can really say the size is the big win and the best argument for this eBook reader. I really keep the habbit to have it in my pocket beside my wallet....
Today I dreamed of a river. It's weird because for the past few months the only dreams I've had are sleep paralysis-inducing nightmares or me doing everything I've been putting off, work-related or otherwise. But today I dreamed of just this wide, winding river, dark-colored, crimson, similar to the color I saw in...
April 2026. Easington. North Yorkshire. Mrs RM declined my offer of a night in a a campervan in a Cleveland car park, her loss. Two hours later I’m at the coast, “I can see the seaside !“, and planning blog titles for the Tiger in tiny Easington (pop. 400). I’m expecting it to be full of folk on day trips from...
This is a fun brainstorm about snail mail sign-ups. I’ve been trying some snail mail things to thank a handful of Pika customers. Unfortunately it hasn’t been very effective. There’s been almost a complete lack of response. I’m not even entirely sure if most people received my mail. So I think snail mail sign-up...
The poets are getting older: Kay Ryan is 80, Dana Gioia is 75, Dick Davis is 81, Billy Collins is 85 – and today Ted Kooser turns 87. He's a poet who tends to get dismissed as a Midwesterner dispensing homely wisdom, but I think this is unfair (and reminiscent of the way some have dismissed Willa Cather as a...
SHE DESERVED IT, and had an amazing time! We got to hear all about it and catch up with her at D&D, where she was EXTREMELY NORMAL about America in comparison to Nippon, even moreso than her usual VERY REGULAR AND CHILL opinions about our country! 5. Riding the Sagano Romantic Line, A PARTICULARLY mono no aware...
I finished this book a couple of weeks ago, but I found time only now to post my thoughts on it. This book is a memoir of Facebook's ex-policy maker who describes her experience at Facebook and how it turned from a project focused on connecting people into a project blamed for spying on people, selling their data,...
When you search for privacy/data protection stuff, what you will usually come across are things like privacy guides, the privacy subreddit, interested tech-y privacy blogs and YouTube channels. They give you great advice and overviews over different kinds of alternative services or additional software you can use to...
A quick guide on how to set the GPU-accelerated Ghostty terminal as the default on Ubuntu 26.04 using the new configuration method.
Awhile back, Joel wrote about his Inoassis Y1 which is a little iPod-like thing that you can buy to play music. As with most things in life, I aspire to be Joel, so I bought one too. (Seriously, Joel is cool and has tons of ideas, so he gets me into a ton of bad habits like fountain pens. I should probably stop...
Happy Lesbian Visibility Day to all who celebrate! Here’s a photo of Eryn and me being visibly lesbian in Cole Valley a couple weeks ago (photo by Eryn). #GirlsWhoKissGirls #lesbian #LVW26 #GirlsLikeUs #TransIsBeautiful
Earlier this week I quietly released an iOS app called scout, a Gemini protocol client. I built it quite a while ago but never published, and thought “why not?” Almost immediately after doing so, I read this post that really made me think about the Gemini approach in general. After some deliberation, I thought it...
In the interest of transparency: as readers may recall, I paid Dave a visit at the company’s workshop in 2024. Since then, I’ve been back several times and we remain friends, trading ingredients, incense, and knowledge. I also received this incense for free. Despite this, as always, I will do my best to be...
Macs have had issues with SMB and Samba on servers that aren’t Macs. Most forums online tell you to put really insane unsafe settings that make 0 sense. Socket options with static send buffer sizes and receive buffer sizes are something that I wouldn’t recommend anyone use because your server would be more prone to...
I was at a meeting last night where the lecturer discussed how many OCTs he ordered monthly. He is in an MD/OD practice in a rural area, so he sees more medical patients than most. However, he says he ordered 275 OCTs/month. I think it’s very instructive on how ODs should position themselves in the spectrum of a...
Let me begin by saying that web bookmarks are great. You can just save links that you find interesting or that you think you might need later, and there they are waiting for you when you need them. I hope that whoever came up with that feature got a good raise or bonus or something. However, they are lacking in one...
Puro...
A fun bit of storytelling on the website for a git client Retcon: I don’t have personal experience with Retcon. I definitely struggled a lot with git’s syntax over the years, and have my own cheatsheet that looks similar to this. But what I really liked from this page was the elevation of undo to be the North Star....
